It was Lionel Messiâs dream to return to Rosario and play for Newellâs Old Boys. But after a supermarket, owned by his wifeâs family, was attacked by a local narcos gang, his dream appears to be over.
Why did the supermarket get attacked? Was it a personal attack on Messi? Does Rosario have a problem with gang violence? Will Messi ever get to play club football in Argentina?
Felipe CĂĄrdenas tells the story, Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

For me the note sounds like âif you come back javkins wont be able to protect you because he is also part of the problemâ but meanings get lost in translation.
Or
Javkin can't even protect a famous and one of the most important personality in Argentina. Then how could he protect normal citizens.
Otherwise like you said, he is part of the problem.
Para mi no /not for me
seems to be something like that, I figure a problem occurred between Javkin and narcos, has to be, targeting Messi of all people has to be associated with a deeper intention
But the note was in English so it's easy enough to interpret

Messi can literally fund his own police force to fight the Narcos lol
Why would he want to though
â@@ryleypalmer yeah so let them get messi
He's not nearly rich enough for that

@@1998Cebola let him do 2 or 3 seasons in Saudi Arabia and he will have more than enough lmao
As much as people might like it to be the truth, unfortunately Messi can do nothing about the cartels, and the people love him, but won't die to protect him, Messi is going to need a LOT of security, for himself, his family, and his extended family, all the way to his staff
some Argentines are crazy enough to go to war against the cartels for him, but they are a small minority and are outnumbered by the cartel's members
yeah but there's no actual reason for the cartel to eliminate him. Maybe occasional robbing is due, but an actual killing seems simply crazy

As a Leeds fan, I've really wanted to go to Rosario to see Newell's as a sort of pilgrimage for Marcelo Bielsa. Lots of Leeds fans have done the same. I think I'll give Rosario a miss after watching this đ never knew the city was so dangerous

It seems more realistic than ever that Messi would return to Barcelona to eventually retire, especially since the club can just pull whatever super financial lever it needs on-demand it seems.

Narcos seems more like a company's name meant for snacks
If they ever got into delivery snacks , they could call themselves 'narcos nachos'. Has a nice ring to it. Maybe they could fill the nachos with drugs (not trying to give them any ideas).
it is a diminutive for narcotraficants
Or sugar!
Saying messi is the most loved person in the world would not be crazy
Thank you tifo for covering this in detail
I really love the illustration on this video. Fantastic work
i hope your animation people get paid well because they are doing an awesome job
The situation looks Messi.
I hate you for this joke, but you earned my like
One of Tifo's best animated videos I think
Itâs not just Rosario. The entirety of Argentina is in a terrible state. The entirety of South America, to be honest. It would be much safer and comfortable to play for Barcelona and live there again. Heâs said many times that heâll live in Barcelona after retirement but I think heâll end up playing there to end his career anyways.
Same thoughts over here. Also a fellow latam guy, it is like this everywhere right now, especially so in Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico; with special mention of Peru. He is more than likely going back to Barcelona, maybe not to play, but to live for sure.
As another fellow south American, they talk about Africa but LATAM is way worse on insecurity matter
â@@claudiocerezo1644 True, a lot of poverty in Africa, but the crime waves in South and Central-America are out of this world.
I don't agree. Actually, there is a lot of places that are really safe here.
you're delusional, there's millions of rich people in latinamerica living perfectly fine
When "Anibal Fernandez - Argentina Defense Minister" came up I first read it as "Argentina Defensive Midfielder" and was thinking, who??

The video is great as always. But the most brilliant thing about it is the title. I won't call it a click bait but it's probably One of the most clickable titles ever on you tube đ€Ł
messi is truly the goat , you'll never see any other futbol star facing anything as dangerous as narcos lol
Messi coming back to Rosario could actually be the catalyst to end the Narcos reign over the city.
I might have to step in to sort this out then
Didn't he publicly dine in a restaurant in central Rosario just a few days ago? and once people found out, thousands flocked the road and he barely managed to leave among people shoving him around? Messi has big balls lol
This is the moment when Messi became Heisenberg
Underrated comment
These vids are excellent quality and contain good content, but I miss the days the original Tifo channel used to exhibit a lot more tactical content that is more digestible than their current Tifo IRL content which is more unscripted and can at times feel long winded and disjointed. Most of their stats related vids, player profiles and tactical videos are outdated.
Messi in narcos argentina , next netflix series. Can't wait . Just imagine.
Imagine the riots in Argentina if messi was kidnapped đ€Ł
Compared to this, my country feels extremely safe.
correcto mundo. orang sana mainnya pistol bro, sedangkan kita paling mentok juga parang.
There's no other Argentinian ronaldo fan other than garnacho
You can tell based off the comments. Thereâs a huge lack of understanding of this situation. Theres only a few that have the sense of realness. Just goes to show thereâs either A: Kids in here B: Just people without any considerable intelligence.
Netflix is writing all of this down
Nice illustration showing Lionel right after the afternoon sniff đ
I didnât realize that cartels or Narcos or whoever were a big issue in Argentina, I thought the country was far more stable and secure than that. Honestly, thatâs terrifying, would they actually threaten his life?
They only have influence in Rosario. But there is a lot of crime, which where I live, (the countryâs capital), is due to brutal deterioration of the economy
Here I thought it was a campaign against the TV show :D.
Can you believe that Argentinians make fun of other Latinamerican countries because of their insecurity? Talk about the man in the mirror
They even make fun of Europeans. It's incredible.
Argentina should change their national anthem to Michael Jackson's song "Man in the Mirror"
50 murders is a national crisis for them.
How many murders happened in rio or tijuana?
Tijuana population: 1.8m
Tijuana murders: over 2000
Rosario population: 1.75m
Rosario murders: 50
Theyâre a joke outside of football and basketball. Peronism is a self fulfilling prophecy that involves economic meltdowns
nah fam you got it all wrong we always talk about our insecurity we only make fun of mexico cause they have a serious issue and they always sayin bs to us so we reply with the same coin. Regarding making fun of europeans to my knowledge its usually the opposite we admire europe and probs only made fun of salty real madrid fans (kinda ironic considering their idol is also argentian Di Stefano)
1st world drug dependency is why there's such a thing as "narcos" in the first place. That, and governments' refusal to decriminalize and take CONTROL of drug sales in America, Germany, Italy, etc., only serves to endanger us all. I hope Messi, his family, and EVERY Argentine will be safe.
You hit the nail in the head. 1st world citizens thinking it's all harmless fun not realizing how many deaths their Friday nights fuel in our countries. 1st world governments collaborating to wage a war against drugs far away from their borders instead of controlling consumption inside their own.
LEGALIZE ALL DRUGS
That video of messi getting swarmed by the crowd when he went out for dinner makes it look safe tbh?
South America will never change
Crazy
Don Mateo is enough to handle these goons
His name alone will strike fear in their hearts

Waiting for the Bayern firing nagelsmann video tifo
I mean look how high quality these vids are. Surely it will take a couple days to produce it.
I'm from Rosario. I thought you won't cover this topic well, because not even porteño media can cover it properly, but you could talk professionally about the basics, which is actually kinda difficult
Just a quick note, while we love Di Maria in Rosario Central, i don't consider him a club legend, since he has never won anything with us. Still, we love him and we all want him to come back
If the narcos lay a finger on Messi Argentinians will destroy the narcos
Yes unarmed and some even unhealthy Argentines with no experience in fighting put their own life and their family at risk just for messi
So Rosario is kinda like the Baltimore (in The Wire) of Argentina?
Well, we called it the "Chicago" of Argentina.

Remember when it comes to covering for the cartel there are a lot of individuals who aid and abet, either because they have friends and family in those cartels or because they get paid to look the other way or because they see the crime as not directly affecting them. If Messi gets touched a decent number of people will not have the cartels back.
They control through fear and money, people wonât choose a footballer for fear of retribution and that power runs deep!
I don't think I've ever been this early to a video before....
Ok, thanks for letting us know.

Not exactly, unless he joined after his birthday in 1994 he was still 6
Isn't it best in this situation that Messi makes use of his money, buys nuclear device & just nukes the city of Rosario ? Problem solved...he can even tell people that he likes to move away beforehand...

Mateo, who sent you? Tell me don't worry, I would not tell anyone I promise :)
That narcos gang members are supporters of Rosario central probably and doesn't want messi to play for Newells....just a hypothesis đ€
Argentina's economy is falling to pieces so none of this should be surprising.
This actually might have little to do with Messi but more an embarrasment to the major...if he cannot protect their national treasure then he is not who he says he is...and must come down and talk. Cartels normally have rules themselves so if they wanted blood they wouldn't have shot up an empty store. They want something else and i suspect its from the Major not the King
