At the World Cup in Doha, the Dutch national team was captained by the Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, while much of their tactical acumen comes from assistant manager Edgar Davids.
Van Dijk and Davids, along with many others at the World Cup may have represented a different nation altogether - Suriname.
This is the story of how the tiny nation of Suriname produces so many world-class players. Told by Adam Crafton, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

Iâm always amazed by the fact that Ruud Guillet and Frank Rjikaard's fathers came over to Holland from Suriname together.
They were bffs also as kids while looking like twins.
DID they ever reconcile after the WC fallout?

It's officially The Netherlands now. Holland I think is an area in The Netherlands
As a Dutchman, I loved this video. Some of the best Dutch players ever are from Suriname lineage and respect for that is well deserved.
Seedorf is a top-5 player in our football history in my opinion and does not get the credit he deserves
đ«”đŒ r a đȘšâ
Seedorf was een geweldige voetballer maar, het probleem met Seedorf is dat zijn succes is behaald in het club voetbal. En iedereen lijkt enkel het gezeik en de gemiste penalties te herinneren bij het Nederlands elftal
Good kickboxers from suriname too
@1337menno same was with messi till 2020 and now....
Not good enough to ever win a final though đ
It's not the population of 600,000 in Suriname that is relevant, but the population of 500,000 Dutch nationals with roots to Suriname. I don't think any world class player was ever developed in Surinam. It's a combination of the wonderful dutch football infrastructure (the fa has 1 million members, more than the Spanish fa) and the ambition and talent of the surinamese community. I'd love to see Surinam in the 2026 world cup though! I didn't realize their chances of qualifying were so high.
THANK YOU!!!!!
That's colonialism for u baby
Helps that the Surinamese roots population has less economic success in the society and have lower wages and standards of living. In other words, being poor is the root of much sporting success in history.
@@uriustosh it sure is a factor. And it depends which sport too. You'll see less Surinamese or others with an immigration background in tennis or hockey. Football is the great equalizer in many countries.
That is where the truth is without the Dutch infrastucture with coaching and training, many of these players would have not made it, the same argument goes for African countries. Look at how many on the Moroccan side were born in Belgium, France or the Netherlands, I believe something like 7 out of the starting 11 in the World Cup. It is great to have talent but without the facilities a player can go nowhere.
The Netherlands' contribution to modern football on and off the pitch is enormous, seems insane that they've never won a World Cup.
:(
Don't remind us of that đ
1978 the dutch were robbed by argentina. Cruijff was threatened, so he didnt participate + the final was in argentina, with 100k argentinians and 0 dutch people. Argentina was allowed everything, in that game.
Ultimately that final was lost before it was even played. Fk fifa.
@@hb-kw4mr Exactly , the tournament should've never happened in Argentina to begin with. There was alot going on in the country at the time. I also remembered they fixed a game against Peru , they had to win with 4-0 to qualify for the final. It went to 6-0 after dictator Videla went to the locker room of Peru before the match.

Suriname and Jamaica man. These 2 smaller countries have contributed to sooooo many world class players over the years that ended up representing the netherlands or england. Much respect to them and i think everyone is rooting for their national teams to reach a level thats atleast close to the talent theyve contributed. It is also fair to mention that a solid percentage of these players have european parents as well too so it could be a legit tough decision for them.
Also Martinique for the french
@@atilla4372 but for france its more like africa as a whole tbh. Theyve gotten great talent from Guadeloupe, martinique, and french guiana but I wouldnt even be able to give you a main contributing country for them. senegal? Dr congo? Ivory coast? Algeria? Thank you for this video, I never expected to see a video about my country on such a large chanel. I'd like to add that breaking even in our second season is a very optimistic goal and will be hard due to our current inflation rate. Furthermore, I'd like to mention "het kleurrijk elftal" which was a team of Dutch players of Surinamese descent whom played friendlies in Suriname in the 80s. Most sadly died due to a huge plane crash in 1989.
Feel Sorry for your Dutch colonial past

Fun fact: geographical land size-wise, Suriname is 4 times larger than the Netherlands.
also a fun fact: there are about 600.000 people living there, in the Netherlands there are about 17,5 million.
This is a great piece! Love that the title makes you think it is about the Netherlands, actually being about Suriname.

Indeed, Jamaicans are hugely represented in the English pool, but as well as the USA (Tim Weah, Mark McKenzie, Sean Johnson, Antonee Robinson off the top of my head) and Canadian pools. It tracks very nicely with the biggest location of the Jamaican diaspora.

Would be interesting if FIFA adopted the same policy for dual nationals as rugby has. Where A player can change nations if they stand down or not selected from Tests for three years, and can then represent thier birth nation or nation of parents or grandparents.
Imagine a Suriname squad strengthed with former Dutch nationals
That is already happening there several dutch players in the surinam team !
But in Rugby the move is mostly towatds the richer countries ! A lot of New Zealand and Australia international players are from (=Born and raised) the Pacific Islands Islands. England has a couple. Dutchman Tim Visser played for Scotland ..etc .
FIFA should mandate players can only play for their country of birth
@@philthornton1382 you like simple solutions for issues that are not always simple and straightforward !

Furthermore, people can have different nationalities and they should be able to choose freely between the countries they can represent as long as they hold a passport of that country.

Something that makes me happy as a Dutchman is when players from different cultures feel proud to wear the orange jersey. We can still do better as a country to make these players feel even more proud to represent the Netherlands and make them feel more home. Especially considering lately plenty of players have been chosing their country of origin instead of the Netherlands, makes me feel like we haven't done a proper job making them feel Dutch.
There is a lot of places where there could be a much better football but somehow not really works.
Suriname is blessed with talented footballers, but another Island that also helps the Dutch National team to produce strong talented players is Curacao. Eventhough not as much as Suriname... Curacao also has quite a few players that represented the Dutch team or the younger Under 20 squad.
Players such as Geertruida (Feyenoord), Gregory van der Wiel ( PSG, Ajax), Timber twins (Ajax & Feyenoord.), Patrick Kluivert (Ajax & Barca, his mom is from Curacao) & Jetro Willems (PSV, Newcastle & Eintracht).
Currently there's almost 15 players in Ajax Youth set-up, 11 in PSV and 20 in Feyenoord youth teams.
Curacao and Suriname can produce a very strong national team but majority of those players wont choose to play for either countries.

would probably improve there game if Guyana and Suriname moved to Conmebol to make it a 12 team continent, would have little to no chance of qualfying right now but im sure over time it would improve there game as players would represent them more, after 2026 they should move imo.
I am pretty much sure no one would have known Gullit or Rijkaard or any of the other players of Suriname descent, if they had not played for Netherlands ..... they might have been born in Suriname or are of Suriname descent, but the footballing infrastructure they availed was Dutch, and that made them into great players ultimately ...... hence I would still give kudos to the Dutch football association for nurturing such great talents ......

Unbelievable that a video of Surinam is posted by Tifo.
Surinam is a small, but football crazy, country. There are numerous artificial turf pitches and every night they are fully booked and played on.
It's not uncommon to see children playing football on the streets.
All in all, it would be an understatement to say that football has an impact on the Surinamese people.
Itâs strange to me that Suriname is part of CONCACAF, not CONMEBOL
Yes, but they have no cultural or economic ties to South America. So it does make sense. I think it applies to the other 2 Guyanas as well
Surinamese footballers from the Netherlands have a tragic plane crash in their history. In 1989, Surinam Airways flight 764 crashed while trying to land at Paramaribo (the crash was caused by the bad crew decisions made, coupled with a bizarre hiring structure of crew and lack of oversight). Many Surinamese Dutch players, part of the "Colourful 11", were on that flight to play a friendly with a local Suriname team. Most of the players on board died. Even more unfortunate, so many of the stars players part of that "Colourful 11" were denied permission from their clubs to play, so the players on that flight were second-stringers. Some players that were held back included Ruud Gullit and Aron Winter.
Top content as always.

This is not what I was expecting from the title. As a U.K. British born black man (not of Surinamese descent), Iâm sure if I was born in Holland, my football education would be very different.
