PSGâs seasons follow a similar pattern; summer full of big-name transfers, start the season with a bang, trail off towards the end of the season, and crash out of the Champions League. However, they have started to trail off even earlier this season, and look like losing out on the Champions League even earlier than usual.
So what is different about this season? Has the mid-season World Cup had an impact? Jon Mackenzie writes, Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

No the inability for ownership to create a team and not a group of superstars broke PSG
The last good midfielder they bought was Veratti. Crazy this inability to buy anything that's not a striker

Inability to make their own names is a problem, too. Mbappe is from Paris and still got scouted by Monaco and picked but by them first. Thereâs no want or drive from the ownership group to go for anything remotely sustainable and itâs just starting to all fall apart at once
P$G is not a team, is just a collection.
I do feel it affected them as a team since to start the season they were really good with Messi being the playmaker to Neymar and Mbappe but now idk whatâs happening
Vininha and verratti dip in form/injury is the biggest issue.

When gets me is that we all knew PSG's defense and midfield was HORRIBLE and they didnât sign any available defender or midfielder during the transfer window.
A majority of the players there don't have commitment to the club, so they only used the club to stay fit ahead of the world Cup, and since the world Cup is over, there is no more motivation to play and fight like they did before the world Cup.
Imagine having Messi and playing a formation where he ghosts 80% of the games they play. And this season he's doing much better than last season. I hate the idea of building teams and setups around a player, but guys like Messi are the few exceptions. Messi can't play a 3 at the back, and even Mbappe struggles hard
Why
so youâre saying to build a team around messi? judging from their style of play in the match against bayern it looked like they couldnt string passes + messi isnt the same as he was before you have to remember he was the one breaking lines with 1-2s with his burst
@@kururin7 U saw the WC? It's the same Messi in PSG. Argentina was built around Messi and look at at how they played. He doesn't have the same physicality as before but he still can do wonders if the team plays for him. Literally vitinha, ruiz, and soler have some agenda against him and never pass even when he is not marked. It ruins the whole flow of PSG's game .
@@pkr2098 heâs old mate you dont build a team around someone whos already reached his peak unless its a team that plays once in awhile.
ââââââââââ@@kururin7 Which sport do you follow? Argentina defeated Copa Champion (Brazil) Euro Champion (Italy) and World Champion (France) in a row with Messi being best player in all 3 of the tournament. Argentina were undefeated for record 36 time (2nd in history) until that Saudi Arabia loss.
In 2022, Messi recorded 2nd highest goal in a single calender year in international's history. I don't think Messi was the main man in Argentina's success. Argentina played as a team. Same way PSG should involve Messi more just like they involve Mbappe. There was no main man in that famous MSN trio. They all played for each other. Messi saved PSG twice when both Mbappe and Neymar were injured, he was clutch in that PSG's comeback match too (after 3 consecutive loss). Against Bayern, Galtier played very defensive like a mid-table team, what could Messi do? Commentators were saying as if PSG has accepted their inferiority. PSG didn't change immediately after Mbappe's substitution. Bayern substituted their important player (can't remember the name). When Bayern coach realised that, he then again substituted and then the 15 minutes of PSG's storm was over again.
Messi can't dribble like his prime. But he has increased his goal numbers from outside the box since 2019 which has been a great alternative for him (he alone scored more goals from outside the box than Mbappe+Haaland+Ronaldo+Lewandoski combined in 2021). And he definitely has become a better assister by both quality and quantity.
It only made PSG's problems worse. Also the that Lionel Scaloni believes that Messi will make it to 2026 World Cup is also another narrative to consider. This is great opportunity for Man City to win the Champions League before PSG though as long as they don't play Real Madrid again or even make the final with them but still a tough road ahead of them..
Man City could win it before PSG? HOW Fđ€ĄCKING ENTERTAINING
Man City is not even in great shape. They even sold Cancelo. Tough road indeed. Bayern is very likely to win this season. Or maybe Real again, who knows?

Idk why PSG switched from the 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 they did to start the season it worked so well idk why they abandoned it
Mbappe didn't like the fornation. He wanted to recieve most of the receiver and not be shared along with ney and messi.
@@SaddamOmar66 not really, kimpembe got injured so they needed to move to a back four; Neymar is still the playmaker who drops deep not MbappĂ© so that hasnât changed
indeed Mbappe's capricious change of position led to a downgrade in goal making. This is a consequence of the deal made to make Mbappe stay at PSG, thus Galtier having to make changes to an otherwise efficient team
Because Kimpembe was injured for many months, and they were unable to sign a new center back in winter.
@@zachyrish2682 that's literally a lie, we switched because having 3 lazy defenders doesn't work and our midfield kept getting overrun
Baffles me that they sold Di Maria especially he played so well in the world cup and him combined with Messi would be great.
He was just an old man that could only play for 2 minutes.
@@RandalfElVikingo Di Maria is still a very good player and should have at least been given this season to play for PSG.

You have managers with multiple cl throphys and you mention ten hag lunatic of a man u fan.
This is years in a making. Buying world class players without any cohesion with the team and fans will go up in flames. Look at the first Galatico era at Madrid. In paper there's multiple world class players but in practice they always fail on the pitch. Manchester City has a much better chance of winning the Champions League than PSG and that's saying something.
same is happening at Chelsea
In 01/02 Real did win the UCL against a better Leverkusen _(who also came in 2nd in the Bundesliga and the German cup)._
But you're absolutely right. The GalĂĄcticos definitely failed to deliver and couldn't fullfil the expectations. Especially after buying Ronaldo and Beckham.
Before they finally won _"La Decima",_ they failed in the round-of-16 like ~8 times.

Nah, their squad is really thin so any injury is even more impactful, and they don't have a world class midfielder outside from maybe Verratti so they can't get the ball to the attacking trio. But Messi and Mbappe are literally carrying the team
Didn't the video say they had Renato Sanchez?
Tbh I would say Mbappe alone is carrying PSG. I do respect messi, but the truth is truth. PSG's attack vs bayern was completely invisible until mbappe came in and gave some momentum to them.

â@@belmoskilol sure, so all those goals and assists don't matter?

yes surely this has affected main attacking threat .Mbappe is playing good but I just think that messi is not playing to his full potential.might be due to the fact that he has completed football
22/23 season is out of the ordinary for psg, if they had just lost that game against Lille that they nearly did, they'd have a 2 point lead on Marseille and a 4 point lead on a Monaco in good form
3:30 a single player made the coach change a formation that was working. A player having more authority than the coach is the trademark of a disfunctional team.
Mbappe is a fool for not accepting Real Madrid's contract offer. And PSG are even bigger fools for giving Mbappe that much power just to keep him at all cost. If this ends without at least one Champions League trophy, the Kylian Mbappe era in Paris would be looked upon as an utter failure and he will regret his decision to snub one of Europe's giants. And it's not like at Santiago Bernabeu even want him that much - their premier targets now are Erling Haaland (this task would be made easier if Manchester City are found guilty in the allegations of FFP breaches) and Jude Bellingham. And Real Madrid fans have surely felt insulted that one of the best players choose money playing in what's described as "farmer's league" over the glory of doning the iconic white shirt worn by numerous legends
Seb's voice was a real treat for a change!!
I think your VO audio might be over treated, there's a distinctive hiss in the background
Pretty sad that it doesn't matter how well PSG does, when they get knocked out of the UCL, the season is a fail.
Of course! There is nothing challenging about winning the domestic league, mate!!
Same for Bayern farmers
I think they had extra motivation to be in form for the World Cup. PSG was the place to practice being good at what they do but since they have no inherent passion for the club. They now donât have any edge.
If players get good money from the club that should be enouth motivaciĂłn. If not, you should resign.
"...a club for whom the Champions League is everything" - the biggest problem of modern football, distilled.
Almost got jumpscared not hearing Joe's voice, then I remembered that he's sick
It doesn't help that Messi is still juggling the tears of Frenchmen from the World Cup and MbappĂ© well... French đ„
the first assertion that PSG begins the summer with big name signings, thereby, more world class stars, means, their squad packs a wallop of World Cup team players whereas other clubs with fewer stars, send far fewer than PSG. that alone compounds the adaptation back into league play. what is the stat that shows how many players were sent to the World Cup from PSG vs other clubs from Europe and world wide ? that stat would help
They should just let their front three go and the circus will stop.
New narration sounds kl
One of the biggest reasons they are failing at the moment is inside problems, the squad just doesnât like each other and itâs only getting worse now
I knew PSGâs tendencies idk why I never came up with the clockwork metaphor đ
Look at it this way; PSG being a puzzle with some parts unevenly shaped and the puzzler having to arrange them with one eye closed
GOOD!! hahaha đ
New narrator is pretty good
Winning the world cup, narrowly losing the world cup and crashing out early from the world cup, all will have a deteriorating impact n the player.... SO WHAT OTHER SCENARIO IS LEFT TO HAPPEN SO AS TO NOT AFFECT THEIR MENTALITY??
This PSG is the weirdest team ive ever seen, it doesn't feel like a real football team, they have excellent players all over the pitch but it doesn't work for some reason, i dont know if the lack of competition in ligue 1 affects them in big games in europe. It feels like a parody team
Longtime PSG supporter here, the primary issues are clear. Injuries forced us to move away from three at the back, there's been no tactical consistency when playing four at the back, and FFP basically said we couldn't spend more than 20m in the winter (which wasn't enough to get Skriniar). I think one of MNM (or two) needs to go in the summer, wage bill needs to be decreased. We can thank the old SD Leonardo for coming in and raising the wages/revenue ratio from a healthy 70% to 108% in just two years. Wasn't signing Messi supposed to make us money?? I'm not sure it worked
Whatâs the name of the OTHER Man that does these voiceovers? Does anyone know? Thanks
Please restore the original voice over
Other than some relatively minor injuries, I don't think the World Cup really hampered Messi or Mabppe much. Neymar has his ankle issues, but those are from before the WC.
They're just out of form and are dealing with injuries at one of the worst possible times, and were never particularly deep or high quality as a team to begin with.
Having a few world-class players does not a good team make. And PSG's incompetent owners have never understood this.
PSG should sell all their Superstar players and rebuild a team based on players from France. They can win the league but make it more competitive which would gradually increase the quality of the league. This is the most sustainable and decent way to run that club.
The danger for PSG being that theyâll lose revenue and international interest without those superstars, and might not win the league. So definitely not the best way for PSG in the short term, although undoubtedly the best way for the league to benefit as youâve said.
@JoeDevine miss your narration in this.
I think we are over reacting with PSG. I attended a match and watched all their recently bad stretch of matches. In 7 days they had to played at Marseille during the week and followed by a game at Monaco over the weekend. Not to mention Messi and Mbappe werenât available and Monaco gives psg a bad time at home historically. Then that Tuesday had to play Bayern, when Mbappe and Messi were doubts to play just over the weekend. It was a tough stretch of matches for any club in Europe and I wouldnât be surprised if they bounce back on top the next couple weeks. It was more the bad scheduling and injuries contributing to their bad stretch, rather than the club playing poor.
We all knew that PSG's midfield and defense was AWFUL and after the World Cup that just amplified it.
Sebâs narration is lovely, but he does need to work on his audio quality.
the edit looks fresh and refreshing... we've come this far since umaxit era ahahaha
Neymar gets injured around his sister's birthday.
Like clockwork.
PSG's problem isn't a tactical one, never was. With those players you can play in any system you want and they will win you games regardless of 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 or 3-4-3. PSG's problem is that they were never a team, they are a group of wonderful individual players, just that. You saw that against Bayern and other teams: PSG has better individual players but if they play against a compact and hard working team they have little chances of winning. Of course you have Neymar, Messi and Mbappé who can decide games anytime but still that's not something magical, you need the entire team working towards the same goal, everyone defending and helping each other (something you don't see the front 3 doing). I think Bayern will go trough easier or harder, the only chance PSG has is if the front 3 decide to make a spectacular game, only that, but Bayern has a better team and they play in a fortress. Ligue 1 I believe it will be PSG's easier or harder, they only need the front 3 to win it
This is a tired narrative. It keeps being repeated and thrown at PSG year after year, while the fact is that PSG's team does fit each other pretty well. Mbappe and Messi compliment each other greatly, Neymar was on a great bust of form earlier this year as he was the compliment between attack and midfield. What PSG really lacks is quality depth and a stable system. People have repeated the lie that the PSG dressing room is at war with each other for so many years now, even before Messi's arrival, that they probably helped it become true. PSG at the start of the year when it had all it's new players available was destroying teams by four, five, six, seven goals. You don't achieve that with a group of wonderful individual players. If PSG had someone who could easily slot into Ramos or Kimpembe's place, or another quality wingback, you'd have a better team. All the other youngsters that PSG bought, such as Sanches, Vitinha, Soler and Ruiz will need time to adapt further, but Vitinha for example has already adapted very well.
PSG in the past few years seemed to try and make another Galacticos team. This almost never works though⊠for clubs that arenât Real, at least

Idk what Messi was thinking that he would get s grand gesture for his tripumph against france
New guy sounds good. đđ»
FFP catching up with them and causing them to get a smaller squad is exactly why the rules were in place to begin with
They play the three up front then the rest in defence there is no support in Midfield and they just park the bus then spray balls out to the front three against good teams they just fail.
We've been sitting on the most talented nest of players in the Paris region for years. Instead of leveraging this, we purchased underperforming so-called stars, many of whom with nothing left in the tank having already won everything in the game. Total rethink needed

SEBASTIAN!
Is Joe Bovine OK? I'm starting to worry about him.
Psg and lack of depth. How bad did they manage their squad.
It's wild that Paris only has 1 big football club every year they put all the eggs into that basket so the Champions League is the only competition that matters to them, because they have pitiful domestic competition. London has like 3 premier league clubs and something like 17 clubs in all of their league competitions. The premier league usually also has a rotation of 4-5 clubs who take turns winning it from all over the country and upsets are quite frequent. I just don't get how some leagues (France & Germany are the most obvious ones) only have one or two competitive teams and the rest of the league just seems to be competing for the consolation prize. I mean sure, teams from these leagues often win the champions league, but their domestic competitions are just so one-sided, it begs the question of how almost all of the talent, money and fans are so heavily concentrated on the top one or two teams in the league? Am i just spoiled by watching the premier league since i was a kid, and this is how most football leagues end up and the prem is quite special and unique for having such a competitive and diverse set of teams and fans?
I guess they should stop buying players in the summer and only buy players in the winter break.....
And now Neymar is out for the season, to add to it all.
