I never understood why people use Gerrard's "poor" teammates as a positive. When he played for England,he was actually worse,KO-ing England from multiple tournaments.
No one says Scholes had to play with Heinze or Howard,Kieran Richardson or Luke Chadwick,Djemba Djemba,Bebe Cleverly,Foster,Welbeck
Gerrard and Lampard were world class, from 05-10,in their best position only,at CAM
They were massively exposed as CM's in international tournaments, neither had the discipline,or game management to control midfield, even against Algeria or the U.S
They were pool players, running around the table, potting balls as fast as possible, perfect for the Premiership.
Scholes was world class, from 95-13,in four different positions.
Even as a Irishman,to my dying day I will always rue the fact that England never played Scholes and Carrick as their two CM's
They knew their games inside out, have huge big game experience,a winning mentality, and Fergie in their head when things got tough.
They were snooker players, patiently weighing up the options, conserving energy, knowing where the next shot will go.

Paul Scholes big games are always forgotten because it was always about United. Not about an individual.
Many of us remember the treble season. FA cup final was known as Sheringham final as he got subbed in early after Keane got injured. Few remember that Scholes scored and assisted in both the goals and controlled the midfield.
Scholes scored against inter Milan away game when United were struggling.
Scholes against Barca, we all remember the goal which won us the semis.
Apart from controlling games, he notched up important goals as well. It's a ridiculous argument that Scholes didn't turn up for important games

@@tomparry12 They are all different - but in my opinion Scholes tops the list.
Scholes was without a doubt the most technical out of the three. Good technique is what I believe is the most important attribute a midfielder must have. When you think of the great midfielders of the past - xavi, Iniesta, yaya toure, viera, zidane, KDB etc.. (I know there are more but you get my point) all these players were technically brilliant.
although lampard and Gerrard were good they weren’t the most technical of footballers - they were the typical English player who worked hard, did the basics well & had a mean - accurate long ball.
Gerard was hard working, a true leader. He was brilliant defensively - could have been a defender easily, had a great shot, and read the game well. His presence and aura on and off the field was essential to his team.
lampard was a revolution in that he made goal scoring from midfield fashionable. His positional awareness was second to none, it’s no accident that he always seemed to be at the right place at the right time. Like Thomas muller he read the game in the final third so well that he Kept getting into positions that would allow him to either create chances or score.
having said this Gerrard and Lampard didn’t have the technical ability to be true string pulling midfielders that most great midfielders tend to be. Gerard had alonso & guys like cotinho to do this and lampard had ballack & deco etc..
with scholes he was the man - pulled the strings and had the technique to create something from nothing - in the tightest spaces. Be it by dribbling or finding a pass in the most unlikely of circumstances - he had it all.
a big reason why England failed - (among others) was the lack of technical players. Although in 2006 England had a great squad their best players didn’t have the technical players around them (as they did at their clubs) to truly flourish.
players like scholes were actually very un English. Which is all the more impressive considering he still managed to make it up the ranks and become a true PL great!

Gerrards made countless errors in big games, back pass against France which led to a 2-1 loss, the own goal against chelsea in a cup final, the infamous slip and the back pass to Drogba in a 2-0 loss in 2010. Unbiased Arsenal fan, the way I see it they're all different types of CMs. All very equally gifted, if the top 6 were all given the chance to have one of those at their best they would pick different players based on what they lacked, that's how even they all were.
Liverpool would take Gerrard, hes the most energetic Klopp style player.
City would take Scholes, very Guardiola player, him and De Bruyne would just dictate the game.
United not really sure, with Fernandes and Pogba there if a third one would work, so maybe a direct swap with Pogba for Scholes or maybe Gerrard who would be better for getting more goals.
Spurs no clue really maybe Scholes to try and control the game a bit more.
Chelsea probably Lampard as they lack goals from midfield, maybe Gerrard as has more energy, no need for Scholes particularly.
Arsenal I would almost certainly take Lampard for the goals alone, were struggling to find many goals at the moment and he would be essential for that.

    1. Scholes, 2. Lampard, 3. Gerrard. In 2004 Eriksen got it wrong. He should have kept Scholes in the middle in the 'regista' role (which he had already proved he could do at elite level) and played Gerrard on the left (not his position but he was good enough to have done a job there). Scholes was the best English player ever in that deeper central role: long passing, resisting pressure and laying off the ball, controlling tempo and volleying, shooting from outside the box. Ok, Xavi and Pirlo were probably even better at some of these, but Scholes was a composed finisher in front of goal too! Headers, chipping the keeper, side foots in the corner. He started as a striker and it never left him. I would say these 3 were the best ever England midfielders of any era along with Paul Gascoigne and Bobby Charlton.

Gerrard was a player of many, many gifts. However, cup successes during his time at Liverpool, were not only down to him and him alone. He was influential in the final...don't get me wrong but that doesn't mean he single-handedly dragged like Maradona in 86'.

Carrick is good wining ball midfielder, and he is very good at read the match just like scholes. And the most dangerous things their pass skills is really good. Maybe carrick is good at pass from wider place but scholes is good at tight place to. And Switch play is very easy to do when scholes and carrick play. Zidane said Gerrard was better than Messi and Ronaldo during his prime. These quotes mean little. Most people saying Scholes aren’t old enough to remember him play and base their opinion on those quotes. Scholes by his own admission saw himself as an attacking midfielder, both Gerrard and Lampard were better than him in that regard. People’s opinion of Scholes has been completely revised since Barca’s tiki taka football lifted the game to new heights. Because Scholes played in that style people equate him to being that good, on reflection he was world class in possession and passing, mediocre to poor in terms of tackling and capable of world class goals although not having a massive return on them. He was a world class player but he was not a God like some of the kids make him out to be.
Gerrard’s passing was on par with Scholes, his shooting ability was arguably better and he had the indefinable quality of leadership and being able to turn games in Liverpool’s favour when they had no right to. A big game player scoring in the Europa league, Champions league, league cup and Fa cup finals. He was wanted by both Chelsea and United at a time when they had Lampard and Scholes respectively. He could play any position to the highest level, a generational talent and one that doesn’t get the respect he deserves.
      Gerrard then Scholes then Lampard.

Atleti fan, I've watched the Premier since 1997 when I was 12 years, I would say Gerrard, Lampard and then Scholes. Gerrard for me was just dynamite in an average team, truly the best midfielder of his time as he always played in below standard set ups, Lampard played in a dominant Chelses side for majority of career, Scholes was if I be honest just average in a world class side, even Scholes himself said he couldn't do what Gerrard done for Liverpool
