Two similar yet different midfielders. Frank was the better goalscorer while Stevie was the better all around footballer. If i had to pick one of them in their prime to be in my team, I'd probably pick Gerrard.

There has never been a more complete player in the history of football than Stevie. He could finish, take long shots, make incredible 60 yard passes, had brilliant vision and could thread through balls. Defensively he could stand tackle, slide tackle, he could mark players and had a great work rate as he always used to track back. Then there's his dribbling ability, though not the best he still had pace and ball control, was always so composed on the ball. To top it all off he was a leader of men, captain fantastic!
A prime Stevie was just a different animal.
People who say Lampard/Scholes were better than him always use trophies as arguments instead of actual ability.

Gerrard had leadership which I believe lampard lacked, Gerrards work rate and commitment in Istanbul is something iv never witnessed in my entire time of watching football, I'll admit lampard was better at attacking, but you can't deny how good gerrard was going forward, likewise he could defend much better than lampard, he will always be the best midfielder in premier league history to me, not a Liverpool fan either.
I have a giggle with the comparisons myself. Bar the similarity between their superb long-range strikes, fundamentally, they were very different players. I think Lamps like Scholes was superb in the top third of the pitch. He had slightly better close ball control than Gerrard. Lampard, was also subtle and he was the sort of guy who could just creep up out of nowhere. Whereas Gerrard tended to thunder around. Lamps was totally decent in other aspects of midfield play, but as an allround midfielder oozing quality at every stage of the pitch, Gerrard was easily the faster, stronger, meaner, tougher, box to box player who also dominanted in the air. As you say, he was the natural leader of the two. They were both exceptional passers of the ball with little separating them and they were both very intelligent players who created bucket loads of space for their strikers. I'd choose Gerrard tactically; because, of his versatility more often than Lampard. However, if Gerrard needed more help opening up defences than Lampard or Scholes were the guys to hitch a ride in the Chevy.

Paul Scholes was a decent player but you're fooling yourself if you think he was better than Gerrard and Lampard. Lampard was a Ronaldinho away from being the best player and Gerrard came 3rd the following season. Scholes never got in the top 3. He also had to retire to make way for Lampard, who had clearly more ability to influence the game more than Scholes. Gerrard and Lampard made a career out of scoring goals from midfield. They were more effective for their respective teams than Scholes was for Man Utd.

Nice to see a fellow soccer fan, not some partisan rant. Let me say, I am a Liverpool fan but I was a huge Scholes and Lampard admirer, wonderful footballers. I think Scholes and Lampard were more similar in style and skill to each other than Gerrard with either of them. Hence, comparisons with all three are bloody silly. Sadly, if all you do is look at their goals on highlight reels people wind up thinking they were all alike and played similar roles.

Gerrard is a fundamentally different player to both. Unlike Lamps and Scholes who relied on their defensive midfield cover to let them create up front, Gerrard was alternating between attacking and defensive mid-field roles a lot of the time and doing so numerous times in any given game. He was; thus, your classic box to box midfielder, "the Engine," as Zidane called him. He could play practically any role on the pitch and play to a highly competitive level. While probably not quite as good in terms of close control as Lampard or Scholes on a consistent basis, he was technically sound, and he was certainly stronger, faster, fitter, a better defender, and more dominant in the air than both. He was also more comfortable as a leader. We have to remember, a lot of goals scored by Scholes and Lampard for England, were often created via Gerrards graft back in the trenches. I think Scoles and Lampard while good in the middle of the pitch and hard working. They fulfilled a niche for attacking mid-field play, while Gerrard really was the whole cake.

Gerrard could do everything and was great at it all. Reason why i rate him as the best midfielder the prem has seen was because of this. I know lampard got more goals and assists but that was because he was always in a team of great players which allowed him the freedom of constantly staying in the attacking midfield role. Whereas gerrard was used in CM CAM and even on the right, he also did alot of tracking back and carrying the rest of the team in a lot of games. Just imagine if liverpool had bought better players to surround him. He’d of absolutely dominated everything

Gerrrard played lot of his career at right back and then defensive midfield, he also played less Premier league games than Frank lampard... But according to me, he can be just as good a goalscorer as Frank lampard and definitely a better playmaker like when he was playing N10 behind torres... The thing is that he has a phenomenonal passing range, working rate therefore he can play almost anywhere on the pitch, very versatile.... He could always influence games, if sometimes not with his overall play with him being the complete midfielder then with his leadership and pushing other players to be better, pushing a poor Liverpool team to win the champions league, pushing a liverpool with dosena to with against united... He's captain fantastic and a very humble guy, great leader, lead with example... He always considered it his luck and good fortune to wear the red shirt and be captain... Players like pogba and xhaka won't ever realise the greatness of Frank and Steve, they are out of their league

Both were hardworking box-to-box midfielders with Lampard leaning more on the offensive side than Gerrard which leans more on defending.
Lampard held the record for most continuous league match appearance I believe (168?)
Lampard had better endurance, long shot power , attacking calls and penalty composure while Gerrard had better long passing , pace , and defensive calls. Gerrard was the better team leader while Lampard wasn't as good , nevertheless it's worth mentioning how every important match when Terry was absent and Lampard was named the captain , Chelsea often wins.
Lampard is a strategist, he had great situational awareness while Gerrard is a difference maker , who can break the deadlock at 88th minute in a cold night at Stoke.
Finally both can't be hated , professional Englishmen at finest.
