I’d like to see someone call treason on that or say that they fooled around and both committed high treason. They’d have a conversation with my foot up they behind in no time.

    I love how Sansa used to despise/look down upon bastards, peasants, unattractive people, etc., and admire kings, queens, knights, ladies and lords, and other high born. Because eventually all the people she admired end up using and abusing her, and the people she wouldn't have bat an eye for are the only people nice enough to take care of her and protect her (Tyrion, Jon, Brienne, Arya).
    I guess she learned her lesson the hard way.

    "Lady Stark...You may survive us yet."
    Mark my words, this was perhaps one of the most important prophecies in the whole show. If Sansa is not on the Iron Throne at the end, she'll be ruling Winterfell at the very least.
    Jon and his revival skills may die. Dany and her dragons may die. Arya and her faces may die. Sansa might be the only one, with no other powers than her brain, who will make it to the end.
    The funny thing is that it comes from Tyrion, also one of the only characters with no other powers than his brain. Cersei has the Mountain and that creepy wizard. Jamie has huge sword skills (+Bronn). Bran has his visions.
    I'd love it that Tyrion and Sansa, the two underdogs, actually make it to the end.

      I like Sansa too, but that is a bit of an over statement. Tyrion is actually the smartest one in the show. Sansa, up until the trial of littlefinger, has only been a burden to others around her. In the future, I am sure that will change significantly but if there is anyone capable of making it to the end based on strength and wit, it would be Jon, Arya, and Tyrion. Sansa virtually has neither at least for now but she does have will as Rob Stark did and luck. That does count for something.

      Here's a list of things Tyrion did in the books that were not in the show:
      -ordered the conditional execution of a bunch of blacksmiths if they fail to build a chain
      -ordered the burning of a district in KL because its position gave them a tactical disadvantage against Stannis' siege
      -looked at Sansa lustfully and groped her a bunch while she was naked before he decided not to go through with it (she was 13 in the books)
      -strangled Shae in cold blood (not in self defense, like in the show) because she testified against him
      -raped a prostitute multiple times, to the point that she cried and fought to resist
      And that's just what I can remember. I haven't read it since DWD came out (over 10 years ago)

    This scene has so many great little bits to it:
    -I enjoy how his crown is cocked forward on his head, it just feels cocky somehow.
    -Gleeson's acting is top notch, the terrible smirking, the way he delights in Sansa's torment. Truly, I fear he will forever be trapped as Joffrey because his acting is so damn good people can't separate him from the character.
    -The Hound in this whole scene. He looks away when Sansa's stripped, clearly unhappy with the scene unfolding, but knowing he is in no position to do anything to stop it, until Tyrion barges in and effectively outranks Joffrey. The split second he is given the chance, he rips that cloak right off without a second thought to cover her. He isn't overly gentle about plopping it on her shoulders, but this fits with the character's tone, and also says "I am doing this but I need it to seem like I don't care a lot here or I could get punished later for it". Very subtle character nods.
    -Joffrey's disgruntled/frustrated face when Tyrion comes in and effectively pulls rank.
    -Tyrion in this entire damn scene, with the badass, "See the difference?!" line is just so fantastic.
    -Tyrion insulting Joffrey in front of the court.
    -Tyrion gently offering his hand and Joffrey's snapping to his feet in outrage that she takes it.
    -Tyrion asking Sansa if she wants out, and Sansa's monotone declaration of love, with her head held high and proud in spite of the humiliation and terror she just endured, followed by the almost awestruck, "Lady Stark...you may survive us yet." Also just...so good.

When Tyrion showed up to save Sansa, Joffrey was genuinely intimidated for a second, he was the king, yet looked like a kid caught by an adult doing something sneaky. And when Tyrion said 'The Mad King did as he liked', Joffrey shut up and listened. And it was one of the few times where he shut up and let what he was doing be stopped. And when Tyrion would give him a piece of his mind, he would always threaten, but never follow through. When he would insult Tyrion, it was always like poking with a stick and petty, because he knew Tyrion was smarter, and he respected his council, even as he didn't often follow it.

    For those saying that this "proves" Sansa should have been happy to marry and sleep with Tyrion, you fail to remember the family he comes from. Even though Tyrion is likely the most honorable of the Lannister House, Sansa would still have to endure torment from her in-laws regardless of how well Tyrion treats her. She would still be stuck in King's Landing with Cersei and Joffrey (at least until his death, which she didn't even know would happen). She doesn't need to "be grateful" to marry him. She should be grateful for his actions in this scene, as well as his decision to honor and respect her, but in no way does she have to be grateful to the Lannisters for arranging a marriage that traps her in King's Landing.

      Indeed. Plus Cersei and Joffrey were really sweet to her at the beginning but we know how it turned out. Sansa really wanted to appreciate Tyrion's kindness but she never knew if it was genuine or if he was faking it like his sister and nephew. Anyway she was only 14 back then (even 12 in the book) so she was disgusted by the prospect of having sex with a man old enough to be her father. Not to mention she once was to marry one of the Tyrell brothers (Willas in the book, Loras in the show) and therefore had a chance to escape to Highgarden. Then her hopes got destroyed in one go.

      Except she saw Joffrey's vicious side ever since she watched him torture Micah and try to kill Arya, but instead, she quickly defended him and blamed Arya. SHe knew exactly what Joffrey was like from that incident alone but she still kept her crush on him, up to when he choped her father's head off. She also witnessed Cersei lying her head off defending Joffrey and requesting her Wolf Lady death. So no, she couldn't use Cersei or Joffrey as reasons for distrusting Tyrion, because both had shown their colors early on but Sansa blatantly ignored all the warning signs. With Tyrion, she all the vibes she got from him was a man who wanted to do his best to protect her.
      And no, Sansa's not fourteen. She was fourteen or thirteen in season 1 because Jon and Rob was around 17 in season 1, and Arya only 11. But even at 11, Arya showed much more courage and integrity than lying Sansa. It also explains why Arya was Ned's favorite.

People overlooked Sansa so many darn times, always thought she was "dumb" and "naive" but she was literally a (partially spoiled) child! This scene is probably the start when we see Sansa begin her inner growing. She was actually very wise, she only played dumb to survive. All of the Stark kids were clever (maybe not Rickon, idk much about him but he was also just a kid) The only difference is that some were skilled fighters and some were better just playing the political game only. Jon (We'll count him) Robb and Arya are wise and skilled with weapons, where as Sansa and Bran are wise and skilled with political game / survival or both.

He may love killing, but he gets no joy from hurting women and he protects her from jeofrey whenever he can. All of the characters in the series are so dynamic and have different natures inside them and I love seeing all the different sides of them. (: Like that bitch, Cerse. Even though she is a horrible person and does awful things and should die.. *cough* she loves her children and Jaime and treats them tenderly. I mean, I still hate her. And Sansa is doing what she must to survive the Lannisters. The poor girl. she has her duel natures as well. She may be subservient in order to survive, but she has a bit of a backbone and wants to avenge her family. She is just less capable than the rest of her family at doing so. She is basically alone in the enemy camp and has little support. She has some, but none that would betray the king to help her. She is strong. Just because she is not out having adventures and killing people like her siblings or directly defying the king (which would end in her beheading) does not mean she is lacking in her own strength. I mean, the girl is a survivor if nothing else. And she even gain Tyrion's respect for it at the end of the scene, hammering that point home.

    I still go back to this moment. In a crowded hall ONLY one person stood up against a tyrant to protect an innocent person. Everyone else was either a perpetrator or bystander to Sansa' torment and humiliation. They stood by while Sansa, according to the books, was repeatedly and brutally beaten. Tyrion is one of the few men in GOT who showed Sansa kindness. He did what he could to keep her protected. Tyrion may have his flaws but he is a better man than almost all the men in GOT.

    • @ags5696
      @ags5696 Před 10 lety +52

      My theory is that GRRM created her to be the embodiment of a exactly how a well-brought up girl should be in medieval times: submissive, knowing that they must not question men, I could go on. She's like a Disney princess that is flighty and likely to anger feminists.

    • @MadameTamma
      @MadameTamma Před 10 lety +47

      Grant Stoutenburg I do agree that she is the model of what a woman is normally expected be like in Westeros and I suppose that makes her less interesting than the people actually playing to win the game of thrones. As for feminism, feminists get upset over disney princesses because they teach girls it's better to be a princess instead of a queen, which I don't think you can apply to the ladies of game of thrones. I actually view the show as very feminist because the women in it are trying to rise above what is expected of them and if they do play as second fiddle to a man, or act in a way that would objectify themselves it's all the name of playing the game. But that's just how I see it.

    • @Shaestel
      @Shaestel Před 10 lety +121

      Grant Stoutenburg I think that she is embodies all of this, but she is intended to subvert them. She's not instinctively submissive because she is meek and mild-mannered, but because she's trying to survive. She says she loves Joffrey because it will keep her alive. In the chances she can, Sansa fights back ("maybe he'll give me yours" and the "fighting in the vanguard" line which was her trying to manipulate Joffrey to fight in the most dangerous part of the battle.) Sansa just does not have the support that would enable her to fight back in the same way that other characters do. She's not supposed to anger feminists; she's a feminist dream come true and people should praise her for being as subversive as she is. Of course she is flawed, but she is not weak, submissive or unfeminist. She is arguably one of the strongest characters in the series, just in a very subtle and subversive way.

    • @danikamcleod707

      Shaestel I never thought of it that way. Thank you, sincerely for this perspective. I do mean that, too, in a non-sarcastic way. I was just looking at her as a bratty child with no regard for anyone's feelings but herself. I think I will look at her less as a spoiled child and simply as a strong woman now doing what she has to, to survive. I can't imagine how much strength it must take to smile at the boy responsible for the death of your brother, mother and father.

    The hound has an almost entirely chaotic neutral feel about the whole situation, if you look at him at 1:10. • @India.H
    @India.H Před 5 lety +54

    I love how Sansa is a survivor without being/having any of the cliché characters/skills that most female survivors have. She has no army (like Daenerys and Cersei) and no survival skills (like Arya and Brienne). She is too feminine and gentle to pass as a boy, as Arya did, and if thrown into the wilderness probably wouldn't survive very long. She's so pretty that in low-born clothes she'd probably be taken as a prostitute which would make it difficult for her to get home. The only thing she can do is keep her head held high and ride out the storm.
    The respect Tyrion has for Sansa is also amazing. Even though he never says it out loud, I think he admires her strength. In less than 2 minutes, she's gone from crying mess to straight-backed Lannister supporter, as though nothing happened. He's the only one in King's Landing that she ever could've come close to trusting.

    The funny thing is in a more traditional story Joffrey would be the hero whereas characters like Tyrion and Stannis would be the villain. Joffery has the colours and symbol of a hero, red & gold and is the son of the dead king who is usually viewed as being a wise and fair ruler which were things Robert was not, at least in his final years.
    Stannis and Tyrion being the uncles are usually viewed as being the bad guys because Joffery would stand in their way to be king. In Stannis's case he is Robert's younger brother and would view Joffery as a obstacle in his quest for power, and evan though thats technically true, Stannis proved he was not only the legal lord of the Baratheon dynasty but also far more worthy than Robert and Joffery combined. He proved to be a excellent leader and motivated to his people as well as a exceptional warrior in his own right.
    For Tyrion he being the hand of the king (the kings most trusted advisor) would be viewed as being the one pulling the strings to get ride of the King but instead, Tyrion is the one who actually cares about the citizens and does what he can to protect them from people like Joffery and Cersei.
