@Quetzalcoatl Trant and Blount are Kings Guard but they're basically thugs in armor. Nothing special about them and they were merely assigned to the Kings Guard since they're from vassal houses under House Baratheon not for their skill. Jamie and Barristan were the only members left that were kingsguard because of their skill. The mad king had the greatest kings guard.

Apparently Selmy was the only one that could take Arthur Dayne in a battle, as long as the sword dawn wasn't being used. That's absolutely badass, Selmy was one to be reckoned with.
Stannis The Mannis The man killed a dozen of Robert’s closest friends despite being incredibly wounded and still got pardoned and got promoted as Lord Commander of The Kingsguard, that’s how much respect even his former enemy’s had for him

You can make every episode last 6 hours and have 40 episodes a season to tell all the stories you want and give ample screen time to every bit characters and cover every single fanboy fantasies about them. Armand Horta what’s he got to be afraid of?? He’s a very skilled fighter who like he said could probably take down everyone in that room and take the throne for himself. He loves being a knight, he loves serving people and he doesn’t want to go down like just another memory. He wants to leave his mark on this world.
Best part about this in the books was Tyrion laying into Cersei for humoring Joffery in Barristan's dismissal. Barristan was a living legend among the small folk and any king he serves gains credibility by association. It was one of the only times Cersei actually admits to fucking up.
Even the Hound, a pretty badass and hardcore guy that didn't take shit from anyone knew things had gotten real. Takes a certain situation from people to show what they're made of.

@maciejl20 it is. After he left, a few of the city guards were sent to apprehend him but Selmy killed all his pursuers and was able to leave the city unharmed.

I love how Varys has respect for him and tries to defuse the situation, and how Hound still grabs his sword, despite there being entirety of Kingsguard. Hound knew Barristan wasn't joking when he said he could easily cut through all of them if he wanted.
barristan had so many good lines within the span of 3 minutes “only death relieves us of our sacred trust” “a man who profaned his blade with the blood of the king he swore to defend” “i am a knight, i shall die a knight” “even now, i can cut through the 5 of you like carving a cake” *“here boy. melt it down and add it to the others!”* a shame what d&d did to his character. he doesn’t even die that early on, not to mention he could’ve easily defended himself from the sons of the harpy if it was book accurate 😞
Who else loves the amplifying atmosphere when he draws his sword and they all lose their shit. All laughing and mocking him before he gives them a piece of his mind. Even Hound, a very crude tough nut to crack was taking him seriously.

Shame we never got the Dornish plot in the books, otherwise he wouldn't have died to the either the Hound or falling rubble during Season Eight.

Well in the books he was punished, joffery sent 4 elite guards to kill him but selmy kills them even with being unarmed and unarmored that shows just how badass he really is.
He also says 'Melt it down and add it to the others' the other swords are all the swords of the enemys of aegon during aegons conquest to becoming king of westeros. so by saying this hes basically saying out loud that he is now the enemy of the king. And nobody does shit

When Barristan drew his sword, every hand in the room reached for their own blade, silencing every laughing mouth there. That's how you know that Barristan was an absolute badass.

Barristan Selmy Draws his sword. The hound, who is, let's be honest, always down to throw down and choose violence and also is behind a layer of fully armoured Kingsguard, *hesitates.* The only other thing that makes him hesitate in the series is fire, his greatest fear. That's really all ya need to know 😅

You get into an XP group with him in a mid-level dungeon, and he's doing double the DPS of anyone else because he has raid gear from three expansions ago.

Really subtle visual storytelling: The Kingsguard draw their swords just a split second after Barristan, Janos only reacts and puts his hand on his sword hilt after they've already drawn their swords (showing the clear difference in skill), and the Hound just calmly rests his hand on his hilt (he's not being slow, he just doesn't care that much since there's already 5 Kingsguard in front of him, but he still gets ready just in case).
I’m pretty sure the Hound jumped on that sword hilt. He respected and knew of Barristan’s skill enough to know that once Selmy killed everyone else, it would be a 1v1 fight with the Hound.
The fact that the hound gives a reaction at all shows how threatening baristans sword must be. The hound normaly dont gives a hoot about any danger but once selmy draws his sword he gets ready cause he knows damn well that barristan would have cut through the rest of the kingsguard, like cake
According to GRRM Barristan fucking Selmy was the only one capable enough of taking on the legendary Arthur Dayne as long as Dayne wasn't using the sword dawn. That just speaks volumes about Selmy's badassness.

The fact that Clegane still felt the need to grab his sword even when there were so many guards speaks a lot about Barristan's reputation and skills in combat
This gets so much cooler when you think that between Baristan and the king don't just stand knights but kingsguard. Theoretically the best knights of the realm who are also surrounded by the city watch. Clegane is the last line of defense and yet he still gets ready to fight because he know that if Baristan attacks there aren't a lot of chances that anyone walks out of there alive

Love that when he draws his sword he's faster than the other kingsguard and had his sword pointed towards the king ready to strike before the other soldiers could even grasp theirs. It even got the Hound nervous. Subtle details make a scene
Selmy is a beast, someone I would not trifle with, he deserved far better in the show, the master of steel he was. "Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young."
Isn't there a story about the Spartans who stood up for an elderly man who was laughed at by people from other countries? You must have been an incredible fighter to have reached such an age and that must be respected.

Imagine the heartbeatings and adrenaline rush those 5 "mighty" kingsguards had when Barristan Selmy "The Naked Knight" drew his sword from it's shin. Oh boy, they needed a glass of cold water after that for sure.
Absolutely incredible storytelling. “Melt it down and add it to the others.” Selmy quits - and asks his sword to be added to the throne, a throne composed of the swords of the king’s enemies. He quits and declares himself enemy in one fucking line.

This scene is epic, but I wish they would've kept this line from the book after the last line in the scene: 'Perhaps Lord Stannis will chance to sit on it when he takes your throne.'
King Joffrey’s expressions changing subtly throughout the scene is a testament of the actor’s incredible performance and convincing us to actually hate him.
Even though he was all the way in the back we can still see the Hound preparing himself, a sign of respect for Ser Barristan's skills. Clegane is probably the only one here who knew that Selmy wasn't bluffing when he said that he could cut through the five of them easily.

Although the hound reaches for his sword, he certainly hesitates not to draw it. He knows who would win one-on-one. But still reaches for it, as he knows the guards in front don't stand a chance.

The only solace of Sansa making it is that she became an oathbreaker towards the gods to do it and this franchise is BRUTAL to ungodly oathbreakers. And she did it against *Azor Ahai reborn* in front of her family's weirwood. "Queen" Sansa in the future, with absolutely certainty, will suffer something on the level of the Red Wedding, and that helps me sleep at night tbh.

I would be too.. Barriston is a legend, the greatest living knight. Even GRRM himself has said that the only thing that gave Arthur Dayne the edge was Dawn.

In the books Janos Slynt and some gold cloaks are sent after Selmy, Selmy writes his final chapter in the kingsguard book, then evades capture whilst killing 2 gold cloaks without a weapon, escapes the city and then gets BACK into the city so that he can see Ned being beheaded and pay his respects. All whilst being undetected. Selmy is the best fighter alive in westeros. After his famous rescue (single handedly) of king Aerys at Duskendale and also his killing of Maelys the Monstrous in single combat, a man whose size and ferocity is possibly moreso than the mountain as he had killed his cousin by twisting his head off.

I love the fact the Sandor reached for his sword too and I could clearly see the "He will totally murder me too" and the "im not payed enough for this sh*t" expressions on his face.
Every time I see these older scenes, I always gain more respect for Varys. He was taking care of hte 'good guys' of the show in the background. He really was a good spy, even I was convinced he always had bad intentions the first time I watched this. He was just really good at what he did.
The thing that cements this scene is that the bad ass Sandor Clegane, the Hound, reaches for this sword and looks very aware that Ser Barristan's claim of cutting through all five king's guard was not idle or exaggerating.
The Hound might be the only one in the room able to present an actual challenge for Barristan, and very quickly he was made very aware that that fight might be happening

In the books he took off but not before killing a bunch of goldcloaks, got to the White Sword Tower, wrote down his life achievements and his dismissal in the White Book. Absolute badassery
What I love most about this scene is how nervous all those knights get when Selmy draws his sword. That added line that he could cut through them all wasn't needed, because their apprehension is what told us they were screwed.
After this, he broke in the tower of the king's guard and wrote his own final sentences for his biography in the book of the king's guard. The man is an absolute mad lad.

I can’t help but be saddened when I think of what this show became in its final seasons. Watching scenes like this, it’s as if they’re from an entirely different series. We had gold for several seasons before everything turned a certain shade of brown.

Depends on the warrior actually, it doesn't always have to be boldness, it could come down to being smart... In the words of Brown Ben Plumm (who is a sellword and a character in the books). He said "There are old sellswords, there are bold sellswords, but there are no old bold sellswords".. Ser Barristan would've died, but Robert asked them to spare him and treat him, cause he was such a badass.
Seems like the Hound was the only one in that room who got it. His age might have slowed him down a bit but the experience is still there and his mind wasn't dulled.

Best part about this in the books was Tyrion laying into Cersei for humoring Joffery in Barristan's dismissal. Barristan was a living legend among the small folk and any king he serves gains credibility by association. It was one of the only times Cersei actually admits to fucking up.

Really subtle visual storytelling: The Kingsguard draw their swords just a split second after Barristan, Janos only reacts and puts his hand on his sword hilt after they've already drawn their swords (showing the clear difference in skill), and the Hound just calmly rests his hand on his hilt (he's not being slow, he just doesn't care that much since there's already 5 Kingsguard in front of him, but he still gets ready just in case).
Shows how useless Janos Slynt is. He worse than Roberts kingsguard, and none of them have half the skill a knight of the kingsguard ought to.
I’m pretty sure the Hound jumped on that sword hilt. He respected and knew of Barristan’s skill enough to know that once Selmy killed everyone else, it would be a 1v1 fight with the Hound.
The fact that the hound gives a reaction at all shows how threatening baristans sword must be. The hound normaly dont gives a hoot about any danger but once selmy draws his sword he gets ready cause he knows damn well that barristan would have cut through the rest of the kingsguard, like cake

King Joffrey’s expressions changing subtly throughout the scene is a testament of the actor’s incredible performance and convincing us to actually hate him.
Even though he was all the way in the back we can still see the Hound preparing himself, a sign of respect for Ser Barristan's skills. Clegane is probably the only one here who knew that Selmy wasn't bluffing when he said that he could cut through the five of them easily.

In the books Janos Slynt and some gold cloaks are sent after Selmy, Selmy writes his final chapter in the kingsguard book, then evades capture whilst killing 2 gold cloaks without a weapon, escapes the city and then gets BACK into the city so that he can see Ned being beheaded and pay his respects. All whilst being undetected. Selmy is the best fighter alive in westeros. After his famous rescue (single handedly) of king Aerys at Duskendale and also his killing of Maelys the Monstrous in single combat, a man whose size and ferocity is possibly moreso than the mountain as he had killed his cousin by twisting his head off.
You never threaten or embarrass someone who has nothing to lose, especially the second greatest swordsman who ever lived

Every time I see these older scenes, I always gain more respect for Varys. He was taking care of hte 'good guys' of the show in the background. He really was a good spy, even I was convinced he always had bad intentions the first time I watched this. He was just really good at what he did.

The thing that cements this scene is that the bad ass Sandor Clegane, the Hound, reaches for this sword and looks very aware that Ser Barristan's claim of cutting through all five king's guard was not idle or exaggerating.

Even the Hound was ready to drew his sword. That's how you know not to mess with Selmy
What I love most about this scene is how nervous all those knights get when Selmy draws his sword. That added line that he could cut through them all wasn't needed, because their apprehension is what told us they were screwed.
After this, he broke in the tower of the king's guard and wrote his own final sentences for his biography in the book of the king's guard. The man is an absolute mad lad.
It simply read "fuck the king"

I read the books and he killed them and ran out of King’s Landing.
I can’t help but be saddened when I think of what this show became in its final seasons. Watching scenes like this, it’s as if they’re from an entirely different series. We had gold for several seasons before everything turned a certain shade of brown.
Well we had: First we had a series that had a book by some good author
And then we had a series without a book where the show runners and show authors were on their own, that cliff really showed

No matter how many years have passed, I'm still so incredibly pissed at how dirty they ended his character in the show. Even after all this time, a hearty "FUCK YOU" is owed to D&D; Barristan the Bold deserved SO much better. GRRM, I love you, I trust you to give Ser Barristan the arc & ending one of the greatest knights of Westeros deserves.

Incorrect! He’s obviously going to draw his sword if the king is threatened. Whether he be behind 5, 10, 15 guards in front of him! It’s his job to protect. It’s ok to be wrong though and come up with weird scenarios like the one you came up with. Maybe next time!

The sound of the unsheathing of the swords echoing in the hall followed by silence was epic. Awesome scene.

The hall was filled with Kingsguard, Lannister soldiers and the city watch. Yet the room went silent when he drew his blade, that speaks for itself how great of a swordsman he was.
probably my favorite scene in the entire series. what a brilliant portrayal by a fantastic actor. love the notion that even as an elder, he still could cut through younger men

Ser Barristan would've died, but Robert asked them to spare him and treat him, cause he was such a badass.

Seems like the Hound was the only one in that room who got it. His age might have slowed him down a bit but the experience is still there and his mind wasn't dulled.
