Probably the most candid and therefore relatable Nick I have seen. You could see and feel the anxiety at the start of the video. Perhaps someone who is yet to forgive himself for the decision he has made. As a managing director myself I can relate entirely and feel your pain but from the outside I’d like to say, the words you are saying are true, you never know if all the things that happened, happened for a reason! My gut is that your experience of “the process” will mean that when the time does eventually come you will make sure you get absolutely everything the company is worth.
Good on you for making the tough decisions and finding your energy again. People do not know what it takes to head up a company for 12 years!!!
Well done for showing us you are human even if still not your average Joe.
Ps that marathon result is even more impressive!

Thank you for sharing this so openly. Particularly about being burnt out, some of the things most people don’t see or understand. This vulnerability and transparency is why people feel a relationship with the brand.
Most of us can identify times where there is too much happening and it can be isolation when you see others seemingly handle it all without issue.
You are carrying out your mission by sharing (as you know) - this helps people as much as a supplement or content fueling motivation.
    Thank you for sharing

Just because you have 100m in sales doesn’t mean you’ve got 100m in the bank says it all. The amount of people that assume every business owner is absolutely loaded is a misnomer. Mad respect for Nick here and his ability to reflect on the trials and tribulations of the last couple years. You just don't get this sort of long-form insight from a founder, ever. I can only imagine the stress and emotional rollercoaster of trying to balance a business of this size, along with your family, all while continuing to push yourself to break boundaries in various personal goals month after month, year after year. I don't care who you are, you have to respect Nick for his ability to get to this point and his ability to be vulnerable enough to share all of these intimate details. I will definitely be continuing to support Nick and BPN, as long as the products continue to be top-tier in quality, and sold at relatively reasonable prices! Wishing you and the team much success in the coming year!

WOW, and I thought the Ironman training was intense! Nick, your transparency is amazing and almost a brand statement at this point. Thank you!
I'm dead excited to see the razor-sharp vision you will definitely be bringing back to Texas. I hope only good things for Kat. You didn't mention her future, but it sounds like it might be outside of BPN. No doubt she will be fired up to build something of her own. Mush and BPN are training experiences you can't buy.
You also didn't talk a ton about Steph's feelings. You don't have to share everything, nor should you EVER feel obligated to, but I trust that this move would never take place if it was too much of a compromise for her. I personally hope she is happy. It's a hard swing to leave your home twice.
I know you are likely vision mapping a hundred ideas for you and BPN. A masterclass. Bespoke protein flavors. AI coaching app trained on Nick data. Who knows. But I'm excited.

Glad you found clarity in the last year. Without clarity and direction it is hard to drive any company forward.

In my opinion the reason he stepped down as CEO is to show investors "Hey look, this isn't the Nick Bare Show, this company can be successful with someone else" and now that that's off the table there is no reason he doesn't step back into the role. Now that he is back in that role, he is probably thinking "OK - I'm going to start cashing out in other ways (Dividends, salary, etc.) starting today. Love it!! The one thing that blew my mind the first time it happened to me is how far a deal can go and then fall apart. People warned me over and over but the first time it happened to me I was floored. So much planning ahead was wasted etc. I remember thinking a few times "Why is my team not more excited about this" well....they had way more experience than I did. What Nick said about "money wired" is the truest of the true. I have seen deals past the "finish line" and the contracts signed but then....no money came LOL. Too bad as you can clearly tell Nick was putting himself in a position to cash out some major chips and set his family up for life on this deal but onward and upward:)

The best thing someone like Nick could do before taking on outside capital, is hire a former vp level PE guy, which will be cost a nauseating amount of money, and have him find you the best liquidity event. You need a person who knows wtf they are doing to actually maximize the owner's outcome. Investment bankers, brokers etc only get paid when u transact, not necessarily in the best interest of the owner. You live you learn

Been following the brand and nick for about 7 years now. Went from being a brand that when you’d see someone else in the gym, you’d want to talk to them and that you had something in common. Over the past year when bpn was spreading like wildfire through all the vitamin shops and supermarkets, it started to just feel like another supplement brand.

100% what I was wondering. I'm newish to Nick and BPN and wondered if the brand was diluted by the expansion into brick and mortar retail like H-E-B and Vitamin Shoppe. BPN's core demographic is hybrid athletes. It's their "cult" so to speak. Kind of how Under Armour started with one fitted compression shirt for football players to wear under their pads, fast forward years and decades later and average people who aren't into fitness or sports wear their clothes. Their tagline "Protect This House" is meaningless. I see this as BPN brand reboot 2.0 and predict they'll continue the cinematic documentary style hybrid athlete content to reconnect to their core tribe.

I know a down year or some strain seems like a sure sign of failure, but I bought products all year to train for my races, and most of the comment section can say the same. I noticed the "How did you hear about us" survey on a purchase in late 2023 and selected Nick Bare's CZcams Channel. We support you because of your leadership and who you are. The value you provide for free inspires everyone. You haven't changed who you are at the core since 2017, even as you have evolved and BPN has grown. Nick hopefully we can meet some day. I have always seen a lot of me in you.
I started a gym biz 17 years ago, grew to 12 locations, had virtual locations, had workout DVDs, books, supplements, mom died, signed up for an Ironman without knowing how to swim or having run more than a mile in my life (except for a couple occasions), did 6 Ironmans, qualified for Boston, left the fitness industry and now buy apartments and retail centers.
Just wanted to applaud your journey and this podcast in particular. Thanks for your vulnerability and openness.
I never went down the PE route but have many friends who have.
I think your greatest gift with going through that is the wisdom you gained on what building a sellable business really looks like.
My prediction is that within 3 years you will get a liquidity event to the finish line that will be 5x or more times greater than what you felt like you missed out on.
If you ever want to connect please feel free to reach out!
I also love your recommitment to God. That is the greatest investment possible… then wife, then kids, then business.

I feel like we got a ton a vague platitudes. Very long winded. This podcast should have been 15min long. No substance. Not “raw” like he promised. I understand there a lot of factors but this was poor communication.
Why did Nick feel he was the best CEO?
Why did the deal fall apart?
I like Nick Bare a lot more in my 20s than I have in my 30s. Maybe I’ve matured past his message. Good luck with everything Nick.

    • @JackTN678
      @JackTN678 Před 3 měsíci +16

      Most likely...
      - Wanted liquidity
      - Very hard to sell a business and step down when you are the face (key man risk)
      - Stepped down and appointed new CEO to prove out success without him as leader
      - New CEO, recession, sliding revenue, not as much growth or maybe no growth in 2023 as prior years = lower valuation for the chunk he was selling
      - Can't agree on terms
      - Deal falls apart
      - Jump back into CEO to focus on growth again

    • @mattw1508
      @mattw1508 Před 3 měsíci +15

@@JackTN678 that’s my point. He gave an hour long update on the state of the business and we were left going “most likely this happened”. After an hour, your customers/invested viewers shouldn’t have to guess.
I don’t disagree with your bullet points. But the communication was poor. Either go for 5min and say “I’m the new CEO and we’re moving forward” or go for an hour and give details. He went for an hour and gave no details.
Again, wish Nick & BPN the best.

BPN is Nick Bare, regardless of what role he is in. It is not uncommon for the founder to try different roles. And come back into the CEO role. Who knows what really happened and who cares. kat is very talented, I am sure she will continue to be super successful. There are a million companies who can benefit from her capabilities. And Nick will continue to attack life with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.
