A 21-year-old soccer player just died in Spain because he didn't know he had leukemia until he got COVID-19 and his immune system couldn't handle it. Even among young people like us as many as 20% may need to be hospitalized and may end up having permanent lung damage (this could be a hell of lot more dangerous than vaping). I agree those of us who are you young should take some solace (and not panic) because the disease is very survivable but that doesn't mean we should throw caution into the wind and act like we're invincible or our actions have no consequence.

A big hello from Italy, Rome. I understand the "i don't care" guy: the first days here were just like that here too: distant news from other cities, a few cases. The usual feeling that is not gonna be you. You know that feeling.
Then the cases spread up, the victims numbers grow, but it's still just the sick old people dyin, right?
Then you start to realize something: it's not just about you dying. It's about the toll of suffering, it's about how your own actions reflect on someone else dying or being in a bed for a month, scared and with no breath (yes: the most common symptoms in ICU cases is the feeling that you can't breath at all, imagine living like that for a month... imagine dying for that, alone in a room): is it really worth it? Is your coffee break outside with a friend worth someone else's life?
It's gonna pass, eventually, but we have to act as a community: your immune system surely is good enough, so be calm and be ready, but think about those that are not just as lucky.

Hi, Italy here. I live in Lombardy, the heart of the infection in this country. A couple of weeks ago we were in the same situation as you guys, now we have saturated hospitals and there are no IC beds for all. First we thought "Ok, it's like a flu but the virus is new so is more contagious". We underrated it, as half of the world is doing right now, even if the OMS declared the state of pandemic.
The "I don't care" idiot doesn't get a couple of simple things:
    1) Even if you are healthy and young you could die. Our patient 1 is a sporty 38 years old man. He needed IC for three weeks but fortunately survived. But others in the same condition died
    2) You could spread the disease even without symptoms
    3) It's not about you. It's about you, the weak, the community and the ones you love. Your selfish bravery is a total damage for everybody
    4) The problem is not the lethality of the virus per se. The virus has low mortality but high level of contagion and something about 15-20% of people who will need intensive care. That's the big issue. Hospitals are not ready for this scenario.
So please, learn from other countries sadly ahead of your situation. Stay home and go out only if strictly necessary, don't panic assault grocery stores and respect distance. Stay home and stay safe

I was looking for this comment. Some friends thought „we‘re young we‘ll be fine“ and went ON A VACATION. Welp, now they can‘t get back cause the country‘s closed their border and airports. And that you might not suffer from the virus, doesn‘t mean you can‘t transmit it. With that kind of bravado, you‘re really doing your part. Your part in overloading hospitals and endangering the lives of immunocompromised and elderly people.

Love the interview with the warehouse worker/vendor. It’s the same everywhere for grocery stores. People have always assumed smaller markets raise prices based solely on consumer demand. But I know at mine, the purchase prices literally vary day to day. This accounts for every item. Meat departments and in aisle grocery items will always have the highest markup. There is far less shrink than you’d imagine. Produce gets hit the hardest with shrink numbers because you never truly know the quality of the product you purchase even if seeing dozens of pallets of it due to varying reasons. Cherries can be 50$ for a 9 pack (25lbs) one week and cost 2.99$lb. So if every single cherry is sold; which they’re not, there’s always losses in gross profit from shrink (product going bad etc..), not handling properly by the grower/delivery trucks/in between man/grocery store workers and shoppers. When they then go from 50$ for 25lbs to 105$ for 25lbs and the store doubles the price, all you get is crap from shoppers about how stores are price gouging and screwing people based on demand. Now idk how stores like Whole Foods works but I know they have contracts in place with the bigger companies like Driscoll’s (typically the best berry provider) to always get the top quality product. But they also inflate the costs due to this even if it all looks the same originally. It’s a complicated process. Factor in labor costs, delivery costs, failure to receive items on time, etc...there’s just too many ways it can go wrong for stores. So they have to make money somewhere. Typically meats are highly overpriced compared to what their purchase prices are and grocery items can be due to their ability to last a long time and the need for them. You’d be surprised if you saw the purchasing prices for some items. In the state only supermarket I manage for, it’s a delicate system of constant daily balancing. Yes they’ve been highly profitable due to having intelligent corporate owners and in store managers, but it’s difficult. Especially in a time of high demand. You think workers want to leave their homes, come into contact with 1,000+ people everyday, be absolutely exhausted physically and mentally only to have to worry if they’re going to get sick and not have a job?
In short, give more respect to retail workers and expect price inflation all of the time, not just during pandemics. Stores can’t sell toilet paper or bananas at case cost value. It has to be slightly above to cover all of the other costs and factors involved. So when toilet paper goes from 20$ for a pallet to 90$ for a pallet, don’t scream at someone stocking the shelves for you that they’re screwing you because the store is getting screwed too, but by the main distribution companies. And those same workers are the ones who are most likely to become infected due to the amount of exposure and then can risk bringing it home to their families.

I guess I could suggest to you my favorite pasttime, as it would translate well to italy's lockdown.
Reading. Reading lots and lots. You can find hundreds of webnovels for free (sites like royalroad, r/rational, and many more does a good job of aggregating them), and *some of them* are even super good!
Then there are stuff of more questionable legality, like fan-translated works. I suppose it depends on your country. Try to stick to pay-options when available though, the translation-market needs an economic incentive to grow, particularly as japan seems extremely blinded to foreign markets, so only ones that can show them actual expected returns will ever get licenses (despite it not costing the owners anything, they seem to prefer to sit on their copyright than to use it?).
And if you don't already equate it to reading and havent gotten into it, now is a great time to get into manga and anime. Crunchyroll has a few available for money, but again, there are way more found with questionable legality (depends on country) if you google a little. Try to stick to pay-options when available though, still same reason as above.

I'm expected to work 6 days a week taking care of suspected/unconfirmed coronavirus patients which have already overwhelmed our ER (a very large public hospital in a very large US city), a small percentage of which I have to intubate which is extremely high risk. Please do not suggest for gen population people to buy respirator masks or suggest that it's even appropriate, especially your (and my) geneneration. You really don't need them, a plain surgical mask will do, along with good hand hygiene and social distancing. It's really put us healthcare workers, my fellow nurses, techs, custodians, and myself an ER doctor at much higher risk because across the nation we don't have enough protective equipment. It's actually really bad. A few of my co-residents have already become very sick. More and more healthcare workers in our country are becoming confirmed infected and the rates of infection and morbidity for healthcare workers in italy and china are extremely high.

I think a lot of us know it's gonna be huge. We didn't respond as quickly as we needed to and even 2 months after we don't have proper testing. And what little testing we do have isn't as efficient other countries; it takes 24 hours for results vs places that only take 4. 18 million people in the US don't have health insurance and another ~100 million are underinsured (meaning they'll be paying VERY high fees).
Insurance is supposedly offering to allow tests for free (when they're finally widely acceptable) BUT they're not offering to waive fees for treatments. Meaning people who may suspect they're sick can't get tested. And if they test positive and have complications they may avoid the doctor because they can't afford treatment. AND IF THEY DO GET TREATMENT (doctors won't legally refuse them I don't think) they'll be in SERIOUS debt after. In addition to the debt they'll be in from missing work and the financial instability we're dealing with.
AND ON TOP OF THAT some 32 million Americans don't have sick leave. Meaning even if they ARE sick they may not take off work because they literally can't afford it.
The only hope is that the government either gets businesses to waive fees or supplement the costs... I'm not sure how likely those things will be given our "bootstraps" mindset though.
It's gonna get a LOT worse before it gets better. And a LOT of us are going to be scarred financially, medically, and emotionally from the aftermath as each of these problems feed into each other both during and after the contamination. The only thing that gives me hope is seeing how differently states have responded. It's going to get bad, but hopefully the states that responded quicker won't be hit as hard.
I haven't felt this much uncertainty since our financial crisis in 2008, but then I was child and could depend on my family. Now I'm an adult living on my own with elderly parents. I'm one of the lucky ones to work where I do and have the insurance I have via my employer but there's no telling how they'll react to what's happening now that our sources of income are being squeezed.
Sorry for the rant... I guess I've been bottling a lot up. When I thought about being able to live through history this isn't what I had in mind.
