Shakyamuni Buddha taught that all intoxicants should be avoided, as they cloud the mind which stops you from achieving enlightenment. Any experience that psychedelics can give you can be achieved through dedicated spiritual practice without the use of substances.

As a Buddhist Practitioner, It’s about practicing saying no to consuming toxins of any kind, be it alcohol, drugs, tv, video games and conversations. This goes for monks and laypeople. In most Buddhist Monasteries, like The Shaolin Monastery for example, they have a knowledge of herbal medicine. In my view, Psychedelics should be regarded as medicine by ethical means, and becomes toxic when abused. Only when using psychedelics when needed or for ceremonies is fair use in moderation. We in this age should have a respect for drugs and people that use them because they truly need it.
The Five Mindfulness Trainings is my reference point in this, The first one being non attachment to views to be free of dogmatism and fanaticism, and the fifth being about healthy consumption where the quote in this video comes from.
    Stay Healthy My Friends!

First came Theravada. Later, buddhist practitioners started to have visions and revelations and Mahayana was born. They would receive teachings from "higher" realms. Finaly, Vajrayana came. Vajrayana practitioners would communicate with deities, receive transmissions from buddhas and bodhisattvas and enlighted dimensions. They did a lot of "crazy stuff" to go beyond duality of aversion and grasping and there are many books about that. Vajrayana is the fastest and the most direct path but it can also be dangerous, if you do not do it correctly or if you do not go all the way. It is said that Buddha taught on all these 3 levels all the time. At the same time, as he was teaching humans, he would teach gods and beings in the higher realms, although ordinary people couldn´t perceive that. However the fact, that gods would come to listen to Buddha, is also accepted by Theravada. Buddhist and Hindu Vajrayana practitioners did their pujas together at the beginning of this movement and they used intoxicants. Mostly honey wine but also other psychedelic substances to go beyond duality. Even today in Vajrayana monasteries monks drinks a symbolic amount of alcohol during rituals. If you ask great masters about intoxicants today, they will not advise you to do that mainly because , as we know, it could be dangerous. They will never support you with this experiments although there is no doubt that Vajrayana practitioners used them for centuries. So I guess it is our own responsibility to use them or not, only you really know your deepest motivation. I don´t think there will ever be a clear answer to this question.

My understanding, though of course flawed. Is that an understanding of reality via the four noble truths, dukha (roughly translated as suffering) is because of a deeper belief in Self (rather than the western Freudian ego). Enlightenment is a constant, present, realisation of how Self is a falsity. So whilst psychedelic states might make you dissolve the Self for a couple hours, with a potential longer term afterglow, it's false. True enlightenment, is deeply an uncaring of worldly sensation because it's the transcendence of the wheel of samsara. The removal from samsara. In a western mind, there's nihilism in it. When you reach enlightenment, after that you stop. Truly you move on after death. YOU and soul do not go with you. Until Mahayana thought schools, where the bodhisvatta wait before they depart to impact the knowledge. I digress, what is enlightenement? I dunno, do the dishes and be completely and utterly in that moment. That's hard, and it's harder than taking psychedelics, no matter how fun and come together they are. I say this, I like all those sensation from psychedelics a lot.
To your point early on. Ancients were absolutely aware of psychedelics, but it wasn't psychedelics that inspired centuries of philosphical/theological insight. We do need to stop over egging the importance of psychedelics. Useful, yes. Integral, no. It's more hopeful for humankind that many people were able to hit these heights without a psychedelic. Again, this is from someone who likes psychs and gets pumped by the medicinal potential benefits

Psychedelics blasted my mind beyond the programming and made me see that we are all one. But I didn't really grow or feel spiritually grounded until I started taking time to just be/meditate, journal, allow myself to feel my feelings without punishing myself, stop numbing myself through weed and sugar and escapism, heal traumas through forgiveness, self forgiveness, increase my self worth, increase my self awareness, set intentions for the day, set intentions for each moment, unlearn destructive beliefs I was programmed with, exposed myself to thoughts and ideas that served my highest good, treated my body like a temple as you say with nourishing food and daily movement and never sacrificing sleep, prioritising self care and learning to self soothe, learning to trust my self and only seeking validation from my self. Psychedelics are useful in a time of extreme separation and disconnection like humans are living through now. But nothing tastes as sweet as cultivating a strong and loving relationship with your self and God through the life you live every moment of every day. Your life is your medicine. Better than any drug you could ever take.

The thing with psychedelics like Ayahuasca is that they are wrongly overrated for healing purposes and there is too much dangerous hype around it that led many people to psychosis and post ceremonial suicides. The guy James Freeman who played himself as main character in Netflix documentary Last Shaman, he revealed in ICEERS public speech on youtube that they misguided audience by showing movie's ending where he was getting better after ceremonies, in truth after 50 ceremonies he was so suicidal he needed to be hospitilized and go back on antidepressants and ayahuasca did not bring him any healing, he was still feeling disconnected from emotions, anxious and dissociated. There is a lot that cannot be healed through psychedelics like C-PTSD and disregulation of nervous system as we can learn through for example Seth Lyon's story.

Thai Buddhism is a form of the Theravada branch. They have their own traditions including forest tradition.
The Thais are very superstitious generally they believe in spirits and form of numerology etc. thus they have a unique view of Buddhism.
Thai Buddhism is against all substances that have a significant effect on our perception of reality. This includes psychedelics. The same can be said for almost all branches. Its mostly in the west that this is a point of contention.
I think Westerners have a wrong perception of Buddhism. Sometimes calling it spiritual or philosophical but not religious.
I have a recommendation for everyone who is interested in learning the core teachings and principles of Buddhis. The book called what the Buddha taught.
It provides enough depth in manner that is easy to grasp and it is to the point without being impacted by western orientalism.

    • @LK-em1bv
      @LK-em1bv Před 4 měsíci

He did not hate religion. He did not have a strong distain for anything. This goes against the core values of Buddhism.
The Buddha tried all the regions and spiritual teachings present during his lifetime before becoming enlightened. None worked for him.
If you read the actual Theravada dharma which is the word of mouth teachings past down from the Buddha. There is occasion where he recommends adjusting a young man’s religious practice in which he prayed to the four directions to incorporate a Buddhist teaching. Buddha did not try to tell the man his religion was wrong or to covert him. Just tried to hopefully make a positive impact.
The Buddha said he did not want people to just believe or trust him on face value and to keep reflecting on the teachings.
Regarding Buddhism being a religion or not. Buddhism is very different around the world. In some places it is more aligned with what you consider a religion and can be very supernatural and cosmological. Many Buddhists believe in gods and the afterlife along with spirits. Westerns have a very strong misunderstanding of what Buddhism means in its popular countries. This is well known amongst students of Buddhist
