I have a question I hope you can help me with. I have a guitar that has a non-gloss black satin finish. I would like to remove all the finish and get it back down to the original wood finish. How would I go about this? Thanks

Steve Hill - Hi Steve. You would need to sandpaper the finish away down to the wood. I’d imagine it’s either a non-gloss lacquer, or unfinished satin paint as I have on some of my guitars. Use coarse(ish) grit sandpaper to get rid of most of the finish, then use finer grade sandpaper to refine the finish. Just bear in mind that when guitars are manufactured they factor in paint/lacquer as part of the instrument manufacture process i.e. the resonance, tone and sound are factored in when the instument is finished. Therefore removing the finish may affect the resonance of the wood and may alter the sound slightly ... you may notice this in the ‘warmth’ of the guitars tone. Just something to bear in mind. Hope this helps 👍🏽🎸🎼
