  • Have you ever been called a legalist or told that "you're like the Pharisees"? Could those accusations be true, or are they being used out of context? Is it considered legalism to try and keep all of Jesus' commandments? Or, are you a Pharisee if you strive to do everything that God says? Let's breakdown the true biblical context and meaning of what legalism is all about.

    There are a couple of different types of legalism in our modern church culture.
    The first is just as ya'll talked about in the video. People making rules that go beyond the scripture. Basically calling things sin that the Bible doesn't call sin. Christianity as a whole and American Evangelical Christianity in particular has a huge issue with this form of legalism. We judge each other over everything from having a beer with pizza to mowing the yard on Sunday to watching Harry Potter movies.
    The second form of legalism is a form teaching that we are saved by "following the works of the Law". The works of the law refers to the Mosaic Law of the Old Testament which includes the sacrificial system, feast and festivals and the moral instructions (the 10 commandments if you will).
    Our modern version of "works of the law" are believing that we are saved by what we do. Be it going to church or being a moral person. We are not saved by going to church, we aren't saved by avoiding sinful actions, we aren't even saved by having the 100% correct understanding about doctrine. We are saved by faith in Christ. Obedience (Baptism, going to church, giving to the poor, seeking to avoid sin) must flow from faith or it is useless.
    For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. Romans 14:23

    The church of Christ denomination does a lot of things correctly. Salvation, being in the scripture constantly, trying to approach life through a biblical logical lens. However they still get a lot wrong, such as some congregations not taking the command of instrumental music, basically acting like a pencil during worship (e.g. shaming people who raise holy hands during worship, clapping as mentioned), etc.

      @@GBNTV Thanks Tucker, I've read the resource you provided.
      I've also really enjoyed the past 3 seasons so far, and will continue to watch as you guys pump out more content.
      I still find however that even when the church of Christ tries to adhear to biblical worship, they fall short. Instrumental music was commanded in Psalm 150. There is no difference in the way this is worded when compared to other commands we follow in scripture. Instrumental worship was:
      * Given as a command inspired by the holy spirit in Psalm 150
      * Not given as a part of the law or under a covenant requirement, therefore can apply generally to day to day life as a follower of God.
      * It honors and gives praise to God as outlined in the same Psalm.
      The terms "old testament, and new testament" are nothing more that page dividers, they are not a good way of defining definite instruction in scripture, but rather we should refer to the covenants (E.g. the new testament began under the law when Jesus shows up).
      There are many other things that are off in the church today. Such as sermons not being interactive as shown in new covenant teachings. but are instead a monologue that you dare not interrupt, even if the teaching is false. Etc etc.
      Would love to get your thoughts.

      @@seekthetruth7074 Psalm 107:22
      And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
      Psalm 116: 17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the LORD's house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.
      Psalm 51:19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
      As we can see there is also command in Psalms to offer burnt sacrifice. Are we also to do that today as a form of worship just as the command to worship with instruments? This command was also given by the Holy Spirit.

    I’ve always thought an example of legalism was in the New Testament. Some of The Jewish Christians had come from a “works based” salvation, and carried over. While James makes it clear in his book that what we do absolutely matters, we cannot become Jesus, we cannot become God and save ourselves. Only God can save us, he did so through the sacrifice of his son, Jesus Christ upon the cross. This may be an unpopular opinion or perspective & if it is inappropriate I apologize but I have seen what I consider legalism just recently at Halloween. I’ve seen Christians attacking each other over whether or not to participate and spread Jesus on that day to the kids. We need to be careful when it comes to
    Legalism though. Obeying the Gospel and following Christ means that I have an open heart and mind, that can be molded like clay by God. It means he can use me whenever he wants. If im so stuck on a set of rules that God didn’t exactly set for me, but I presume he did, I will miss opportunities to lead others to his son, Jesus Christ. God bless.

    And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
    {1 John 2:3}
    For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
    {1 John 5:3}
    “If any man will do his will, [obedience] he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.”
    {John 7:17}
    “Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.
    So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our *duty* to do.”
    {Luke 17:9-10}
    For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. (The perfect law of liberty.)
    So speak ye, and so do, *as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty*
    {James 2:11-12}
    Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole *duty* of man.
    {The Preacher 12:13}
    Antinomianism is a law unto itself.

    So, I came to know Christ, and find salvation in a ICOC church. I don’t know the details, but the ICOC apparently was started by people that were part of the COC and for whatever reasons they split off and did there own thing. I know that one of the largest differences is the use of instruments in worship. That very well could be the only difference. With all of that said, I really enjoy this content.
    I would like to ask, do you think if a church, is following everything the Bible says on salvation, yet they use instruments in worship, that those people are not Christians?

    1:28 -> This is the exact definition of legalism. Saying we must follow the commandments to be saved is law-based salvation. There is a misconception you guys have that the law of Moses & the law of Christ are different, when they aren't. God himself was who gave Moses the 10 commandments on Mount Sinai, so the law of Moses is the Law of God. Paul says in Romans 7:7 - "I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet." Whether we sin or not is our own righteousness, which the Bible says we are not found in Christ by having (Philippians 3:9 - And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith).

      @@GBNTV With that definition of faith (faith without submission to God is non-faith), you have to say we're saved by works through faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 is crystal clear that we're saved by grace through faith, not of works. And don't try to say submission is not works, the article you posted under "Justified by faith" uses James 2 to support the claim, so by submission/obedience to God, you mean works. There are a lot of confused people out there when it comes to the simple gospel message. Acts 15:11 and 1 John 5:10-11 are clear what it means to believe in Jesus. To believe is to be persuaded that something is true, it has nothing to do with submission.

      @@michaelc7418 I was part of a faith-only belief system at one time in my life, so I hope you'll give what I say here some honest consideration.
      I don't think you'll find a member of the church of Christ who disagrees with you that we cannot appease God no matter how many good works we perform through our own righteousness, nor can we ever achieve a level of works where God is forced to extend his mercy against his will towards us because we've shifted the weight of our sins in the slightest.
      What I would contend is that with verses like Ephesians 2:10, is that participating in good works is a necessary, immediate, and continual consequence of having Biblical faith. I find that makes the most scriptural harmony about the discussions of faith across the Bible.
      Faith is realizing the vast debt you owed to God and that he extended to you favor whose price is unfathomable. If you cannot believe to the level that you demonstrate it, then you don't really believe the debt or the price. This demonstration is not because my good works hold value over God but because God predetermined that if I have such a faith then I am recreated in and will walk in good works. Luke 17:10: I'm a servant purchased at an economic loss if I can even reach the level of doing just what is expected of me by my master.

    • @michaelc7418
      @michaelc7418 Pƙed rokem +2

      @@bryannorris8049 Ephesians 2:10 does not say we will walk in good works, it says that God has ordained that we SHOULD walk in them. If faith had to be demonstrated by works, then how can Paul say we are saved by grace through faith, without works? He says in Titus 3:8 - "This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men." Why tell people who have already believed in God to be careful to maintain good works if every believer was guaranteed to do them? I used to think that good works were an automatic result of salvation, but when I started to read how Paul talked to believers, I could easily see that true believers can yield their-self to sin. Once saved always saved is true; salvation is having eternal life, and eternal means without end.
