Legalism is the idea that our works contribute to our salvation. In the Old Covenant, under the Law, it was easy to draw the connection. However, in the New Covenant, it becomes more difficult to discern.
the Bible teaches that salvation is monergistic. Namely, God does all of it. He initiates it and He secures it. As a result, we can give all the glory to God for our redemption. However, many churches believe in a synergistic salvation. That is, God does His part and you must do yours. This works-based salvation implies that your obedience either initiates or sustains your salvation. Again, this is unbiblical as we know that our righteous standing before God does not rest in our obedience but in the perfect obedience of Christ alone.
In this episode, pastor Dale Partridge looks to Romans 2:1-5 to examine the key marks of a legalistic theology in hopes to free Christians from the bondage of a works-based Gospel.

Such a great message regarding legalistic churches. Well said.
Wisdom Hunter by Randall Arthur is the premiere novel illustrating the destructiveness of legalism. It's an international bestseller. Many call it a "classic."
its one of the best books about legalism and how destructive it is and how corrupt it is
I've struggled for years to understand what was said in the desrcription.
Why so much hate bro??
why have so much pride bro?
Would you call Jesus a legalist?
Matthew 5:30
"And if your right hand causes you to stumble (sin), cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."
This verse is concerning explicit sins… not legalistic.
Legalism is concerning matters of “traditions, rituals, and practices” … things that fall under “doubtful disputations” in Romans 14.
Legalism is defined by doing things in order to gain. Many use Romans 14 as a justification to be disobedient because it's taken out of full context. Obedience and Legalism have different end goals. Obedience does because He did, though Christians often lump the obedient ones as Legalist because their flesh is ruling more than spirit.
