Mortal Kombat - History of Kano's Metallic Eye

- Kano has been a Mortal Kombat character from the very beginning, and when gamers saw him the first thing that grabbed their attention was his metal faceplate containing a bionic eye, which allowed him to see in infrared.
Of course, the Mortal Kombat lore has expanded greatly since then. In this video, we'll look at how Kano's infrared vision works in the games as well as the movies, MK Legacy webseries, and the upgrades in Mortal Kombat X (that allow for the different colors in Cutthroat/Cybernetic/Commando variations), and whether the MK team was inspired by popular movies such as Terminator 2. We'll look at the surgeon who gave Kano his eye in the first place, as well as the work he did for other characters such as Hsu Hao and Kabal. Some of the information comes from Ed Boon and John Tobias interviews over the years, as well as his (Tobias) original artwork. Finally, we'll briefly explore the real-life possibilities for someone to lose their eye and have it replaced or even "upgraded" with cybernetics. - Hry
Kano has so much creativity put into him though. He's a cyborg, has an Australian accent, is the leader of a clan, uses knives as his primary weapons, is enemies with an army general, and has the ability to curl up into a ball and LAUNCH himself all the way across the arena!

In MK11 there is an intro dialogue with Baraka and Kano where Baraka directly asks Kano “what happened to your eye” Kano replies “some special forces bugger took it” Baraka follows up with “I will take the other one” so yeah I wonder who it was. My guess would be Jax.
And that "Special Forces Bugger" is in the Old Skool New Skool reveal trailer with his daughter

Further proof that Hsu Hao ISN'T the worst character. The stuff about the Chinese experiments and the heart implant is pretty interesting. Plus he looks more intimidating than his boss Mavado, lol
Oh, and the guy is also efficient. He got tasked with blowing up the Special Forces bases and he fucking did it. Plus infiltrated them for years without anybody finding out until it was blindingly obvious. His only shortcoming was having inferior hardware to Jax, and really, who doesn't?

What I should have said was that Kano is the only one to openly carry a weapon, Scorpion has a concealed weapon.

Infrared doesn't let you see in the dark, unless there are infrared light in the ambience, just like regular light. There is also infrared darkness The infrared cameras turns on an infrared light, like a lantern. We just can't see that infrared lantern light so it still looks dark to us.
Given his white Gi and goatie beard I've always believed Kano was inspired by Dae Han from the movie "Best Of the Best".
Finally got around to seeing that film. You know what jumped out at me - seeing that the American karate team's uniforms were essentially the Johnny Cage jacket, from MKII!
I think the doctor who invented the cybernetic eye for Kano left black dragon and went to Lin Kuei to update the cyber ninjas there.
I also heard he set up Hsu Hao's cybernetic heart! Too bad it was wasted on Hsu Hao...

Originally the concept was that he got his eye shot out. MK Special Forces was originally going to show this scene!
But it never really was firmly established, and in MKDA it was stated that Jax smashed his face in. And then in MK Legacy they actually show it happening!

Hey. I'm not colorblind as far as I know, but maybe the issue is I was paying more attention to his chestpiece and less attention to his actual eye. If you look at the RGB values on the chestpiece in this pic, even though it varies a bit, there is definitely a bluish glow to it. It's 60/255/222 (in one spot, at least).
