tabmok99 Explains the Mortal Kombat Series by Malibu Comics

- Remember the Mortal Kombat series by Malibu Comics, published in the '90s? Well, I sure do! I used to get them every month from a comic shop called Kluttered Kloset.
In this video I cover all kinds of stuff about this comic - like the advertisements they placed in gaming magazines, plus the normal coverage it received in mags like Flux, the contest they had in Video Games, the tie-ins to the Bruce Lee comics, the myriad of alternate covers, the trade paperback collections that seem to be a UK-only release, even the exclusive comic created just for the BradyGames strategy guide (The Mortal Kombat Super Book).
I cover some of the most memorable moments of the series, and address many of the criticisms. I also go over the proper order to read the comics in, which is roughly as follows:
Mortal Kombat #0 (the prequel)
Mortal Kombat: Blood & Thunder
Mortal Kombat: The Prince of Pain
Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition #1
Mortal Kombat: U.S. Special Forces (implacable)
Mortal Kombat: Battlewave
Mortal Kombat: Rayden & Kano
Mortal Kombat: Baraka
Mortal Kombat: Kung Lao
Mortal Kombat: Kitana & Mileena
Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition II
I say roughly, because many of these comics take place concurrently, and many of them also contain side-stories that appear to take place sometime before or sometime after the main plot line.
Of course, I didn't go over every little detail. There's tons of cool stuff in these comics and they're definitely worth a read. Any hardcore MK fan should read them anyway, but if you're on the fence about this, then take it from me: just do it. - Hry

I had no idea most of these comics existed.
I'll have to check Amazon for these & maybe buy them sometime down the line.
I do have all 3 volumes of Mortal Kombat X.
Blood Ties, Blood Gods & Blood Island.
The part about raiden having 2 apprentices wind and rain, reminds me of that classic movie called "big trouble in little china". There was 3 villains called the 3 storms, each 1 had the powers of rain, wind and lightning. I believe that raiden was based on the lightning villain. Their master was also a sorcerer that would shapeshift. I highly recommend watching it. It stars Kurt Russell, everyone else is Asian except 2 females. Good action movie with great effects for back then. Or look up the trailer on CZcams. Great video by the way 👍👍
I love Big Trouble in Little China, that movie is so good who doesn't love Jack Burton? This movie, Enter the Dragon and Bloodsport inspired Mortal Kombat. Those movies alone makes me love and appreciate Mortal Kombat even more.

Hey, buddy, the easiest most direct way is to use eBay.
You might stumble onto them once in a while add a comic book convention. But that's kind of a shot in the dark. Back in the day, I used to get all of mine at a comic book store called "Kluttered Kloset" (perfect for MK fans). But they're long gone now. For a few issues, I sent away for them from a place called "Mile High Comics." They're still around, too!

A year or two ago I found the Kitana and Mileena and the 2nd issue of Special Forces thus completing the whole run. Been reading these since I was young and always loved them even if the were a bit cheesy at times. Also it wasn't mention, but in either the Baraka or Kung Lao one-off (I forget which), Noob Saibot makes an appearance. I thought that was so awesome they included him as he was one of my favorite characters at the time. Great video.

I love all the extra story bits these comics added. Definitely underrated.

I fell into kinda an mk rabbit hole that long story short, caused me to look for draxson (drakkson?) And I couldn't find him cause he doesn't have a bio on the wiki from what I can tell. I had to check back here just to make sure he had a name.

I've been a huge Mortal Kombat fan for over 20 years and The Kombat Pavilion was one of my favorite websites back in the day, when the internet itself was a new thing for everyone (well, at least for everyone from where I live). when i was a little boy, in Russia were very popular so-called "caps"(a.k.a. chips,pogs,taso), paper disks with pictures on them. And one of the most popular kollection was Mortal Kombat 3 with art drawn by Patrick Rolo. It was awesome

Okay, I swear to god that Rayden's name was spelled "Raiden" when I was a kid. I was obsessed with these games, I remember this 100% clearly. Is this some kinda mandella effect, where I jumped over to the "Rayden" timeline or did they spell it both ways?!
It was spelled both ways! Raiden in the arcades, Rayden in the home versions. Acclaim changed it to a "y" because there was a shooter game called Raiden, and they were worried about a potential lawsuit.

Great video, as usual. I know it's not a comic, nor has anything to do with the Malibu series, but way back when I had MKII on the Amiga in the UK, and it came with an MKII sticker album by Panini. It had little snippets of story/explanation alongside some great artwork to accompany the game.

That's true! It's building off an unlikely four-way alliance that had been brewing between Sub-Zero, Kitana, Kung Lao, and Baraka.

Probably the Midway comics (official MK1 and MKII comics) turned out to be better investments. But you never know what might happen!

Tabmok99, it's very nice, but I have a reason why the younger Sub-Zero left the Lin Kuei. In the Mortal Kombat Game storyline (which was a bit unexplained in the comics), He and Smoke refused to participate in the Lin Kuei Cyber Initiative, which deals in converting Ninjas to Cyber-Ninjas, and the Grandmaster (Sektor's Daddy) Wants all the four of them to undergo the procedure, to which Sub-Zero's like *Drop Dead! I ain't gonna take part in this Bullshit! To Hell with your Ideals on Assassination of innocent people, Grandmaster, and for what? Profit? Greed?*

why is Baraka on Raiden's side as good?
There was a subplot where Shao Kahn had Scorpion commanding an army of the undead for him, and so he began hunting down Baraka's race (they were no longer needed). So Baraka joined Kitana's rebellion and allied with the Earthealmers.
