Who (or what) is The One Being in Mortal Kombat?

  • In the Mortal Kombat universe, there is the legend of the One Being. In the beginning there was the One Being and the Elder Gods -- oh, and the Titans, apparently. The One Being fed off the Elder Gods. So they built the Kamidogu to smash him apart -- without any help from the Titans, apparently. When he was broken apart, his consciousness became all the very realms that make up reality -- and the mortals that dwell within them.
He was invented in 3D era but is represented in the NRS era. Seriously, he's in the MKX comics, MK11 intro dialogues, comes up on discussions on Twitter from developers like Dominic Cianciolo and Shawn Kittelsen, and even an episode of Mortal Podkast by Ben Mekler. Oh, and there's the suspiciously similar Chinese myth of P'an Ku, which I first heard about in the Mortal Kombat novel by Jeff Rovin.

I don't get what they were thinking when they added the titans into the lore. From a narrative stand point the elder gods were just there to keep the laws of mortal kombat in place (that way there can be valance between the villains and heroes), and the one being was a way to make the villain’s victory feel more important, thus if someone were to conquer all the realms they could overthrow the ones who hold the rules. the titans on the other hand are already above the rules, what would be the point of fighting a villain that already has absolute control over reality? it just doesn't make sense

What about Chaosrealm and Orderrealm? What about Takeda? The Red Dragon? Onaga? Daegon and Taven? Havik? Shujinko? Rain? At first, I wasn't too keen on how drastic MKX went with their main storyline, but fuck it, they stuck with it. Now, it's all retconned... AGAIN. @raziyatheseeker Před rokem +1

To be fair, they did also throw a bunch of random characters out there in Deadly Alliance and Deception to see what stuck. Heck, even MK4 had issues with characters who'd go unused. Out of them we got... Kenshi and Bo Rai Cho in MKX, I guess, with Frost notwithstanding? I'd love to see characters like Li Mei, Shujinko and Havok make a comeback. Maybe finding a use for Kai, who was also a member of the White Lotus Society. They definitely did it with Fujin.
But not gonna lie, Hsu Hao's head falling out of Erron's sack in his MK11 intro works for me. Let alone Reiko being a super tryhard to imitate Shao Khan in the 2021 movie. Let the lame characters remain lame shoutouts, but bringing back the cool one-hit wonders? Yes please.

That's, allegedly, what merging the realms would mean, sure, but I've always interpreted the One Being's influence to be entirely subliminal. Shao Kahn acting purely to satisfy his own ambitions of being the ultimate conqueror, but unwittingly fulfilling the One Being's goal instead. Of course, Onaga's "ending" in MKD, the two images unlocked through the Krypt imply that Onaga was the one who BECAME the One Being, essentially, which could imply that by merging the realms, Shao Kahn would actually absorb all the power of the One Being, and become the new omnipotent god of all gods, in which case, yes, I can definitely see him wanting something like that. Eventually this type of magic was forbidden and Earth's protector Raiden destroyed them. However, he unintentionally learned their secret magic before doing so. He vowed never to use this knowledge, but as Dark Raiden he did anyway. Now the council of Elder Gods are divided - punish Raiden for interfering with another God's element, or spare him since his actions saved the realms.

Perhaps Kronika rewinds time to the beginning of her creation, not necessarily to the beginning of the One Being. If Titans are necessary functions of existence, and time existed at her creation, then time moves from then on. The One Being may exist or had at one point existed outside of time. In other words, Kronika cannot actually rewind time to before The One Being's existence, because time did not exist. SUBJECT CHANGE: How many times has she seen the Elder Gods plot the One Being's demise since she rewinds time? I bet she was a serious conspirator.

The last minutes resonated with me:
Perhaps the reason why Kronika was constantly restarting the timeline was indeed to avoid the One Being from becoming whole again (reminds me of the circle keeping Azattoth asleep)
However Shinnok, a Elder God himself + Kronika "son" wasn't attempting to call forth the One Being as mentioned within the video?
I think it was out of spite towards his Elder Gods "relatives", but shouldn't Kronika intervene and prevent it from occur to save, say... Cetrion?
Alas, Shinnok is kinda delusion at that because "hurray, I got my revenge now that everyone else has been eaten" only to then be consumed by last, I bet...
Heck, even before that... it's not even a question of Space (The Realms) VS Time (The Hourglass)
I honestly think the One Being can ONLY be superior to the Titans, simply because he's EXISTENCE itself!
Always Omnipresent and maybe even Omniscient (across all Realms and Timelines) but not Omnipotent given that he's fragmented...
Now here goes a total guess:
Perhaps the Titans were indeed created by the One Being, for what reason we may never know unless we find out more about them (MK11 has certain endings interacting with them if my memory serves me right)
The Titans then created the Elder Gods, perhaps without asking? That's why "he" went to consume them but ended up like that and in the end, the Titans can act as they see fit/ take boss stead, understand?

You actually have a point - before they storm Kronika's isle, Raiden and Jax have this interaction:
Raiden: Let me help you. Kronika’s promises to you are a cruel deception. She is the mother of Shinnok, the architect of your Revenant enslavement.
Jax Briggs: But-- No. She’s Cetrion’s mother.
Raiden: Cetrion is Shinnok’s sister. In Kronika’s New Era, Shinnok will be the darkness to balance Cetrion’s light.
Jax Briggs: Which’ll only happen if the realms keep on fighting each other. What have I done? I’m a fool.
Kronika WANTS the realms to keep on fighting each other - which will only happen if they stay separate. Shinnok does not. So I guess Shinnok was the oddball among the Elder Gods that he had an agenda completely inimical to theirs.

Thanks for this video, as it has lots of developer thoughts I hadn't seen.
My thought was always that The One Being WAS a titan (arguably the strongest), and that the other Titans had existed alongside him. Much like other Titans seems to be associated with a specific cosmic building block, I would peg The One Being (somewhat paradoxically) as the Titan of Life itself. only it could actually create life as we understand it, and did so in the form of the Elder Gods which it then would consume to build its own strength and power. This would have caused the other titans to be wary of The One Being (Shang Tsung mentions they are a fearful, paranoid group in his ending), which would explain why they did not intervene as its creations chopped him up. Since The One Being was the titan of Life, that's why its dismembered body actually became the realms and life within them, as opposed to what's implied Sonya's ending where killing other titans allows her to empower a mortal to become a new god (so not a creation of life, just an infusion of power into one).
Obviously the story proceeds as the games pick up from there, with The One Being seeking to reform, the Elder Gods seeking to prevent that, and Titans playing for their own goals along side.
I haven't read/watched EVERYTHING in regards to MK lore out there, so I look forward to hearing what of this theory fits and doesn't fit a wider data set. Thanks!

In Shinnok's ending (from MKX) we see Shinnok resurrecting the One Being, who then proceeds to consume the Elder Gods while leaving Shinnok unharmed.
Kronika's goal would also be about resurrecting the One Being, but restarting the timeline as many times as needed so this outcome can happen. In this sense, Kronika being responsible for his resurrection, the One Being wouldn't touch her kids in exchange, like he didn't touch Shinnok in his own ending.
The One Being consuming the Elder Gods and, at the same time, allowing some of them to live is not contradictory. Under this perspective, both The One Being goal and Kronika's goal would be completely compatible.

WARNING: LONG POST FILLED WITH SPECULATION
Before they storm Kronika's isle, Raiden and Jax have this interaction:
Raiden: Let me help you. Kronika’s promises to you are a cruel deception. She is the mother of Shinnok, the architect of your Revenant enslavement.
Jax Briggs: But-- No. She’s Cetrion’s mother.
Raiden: Cetrion is Shinnok’s sister. In Kronika’s New Era, Shinnok will be the darkness to balance Cetrion’s light.
Jax Briggs: *Which’ll only happen if the realms keep on fighting each other.* What have I done? I’m a fool.
Let's examine this, along with these two facts about TOB and the Elder Gods:
1.) If the realms are merged/conquered by a single force (like what Onaga and Shao Kahn tried to do), then TOB becomes complete. (All realms would no longer have existence by then.)
2.) *If TOB is free, he/it WILL kill/consume the Elder Gods.*
Conclusion: In general, Elder Gods (like Cetrion and the others) and/or Titans (like Kronika) don't really care about war between realms as long as they remain separate and nobody tries to merge them, because that would result in TOB being free, resulting in TOB killing them. So, Elder Gods WILL intervene to stop/kill anybody trying to merge the realms (as seen in MK9).
But here are some more facts:
1.) Even though Elder Gods are all on the same side regarding the merging of realms, one of them in particular, Cetrion, has a specific agenda to support her mother Kronika. In story mode, this is why Cetrion kills the rest of the Elder Gods. Kronika is not stated to have birthed any of the other Elder Gods except for Cetrion and Shinnok.
2.) Shinnok, no longer an Elder God, no longer shares his former colleagues' opposition against TOB, since his MKX ending shows he would want TOB to destroy them, including his sister apparently.
    And what are Kronika's motivations?
Cetrion: Blame yourself for the Elder Gods' deaths, Raiden. Your actions have irrevocably altered Kronika’s *golden balance of light and dark.* Shinnok’s decapitation was the cap stone.
Raiden: You are a paragon of virtue. You should wish evil vanished!
Cetrion: I abide my mother's will.
Raiden: You were begotten by Kronika.
Cetrion: As was my brother, Shinnok. The darkness to my light. Nature demands equilibrium. *Balance is perfection.* You have stepped out of your role, made that balance impossible. That's why the New Era holds no place for you.
Fine. But, with the above conclusion and these additional facts, I present the case that Kronika's motivations, unless the writers are complete hacks (definite possibility) are ALSO, ultimately, in opposition to the Elder Gods - her actions are actually in support of making TOB come back.
Exhibit A: When Raiden consulted the Elder Gods in MK11 storymode before they die, they say:
Elder Gods: The crisis is grave, indeed, Raiden. Every being will be erased in a temporal Armageddon, even we Elder Gods. Already our power weakens.
Why would Kronika's reset kill the Elder Gods too, when that's what the TOB will do to them anyway once he is complete? Why do TOB's work for him?
Exhibit B: And then when Kronika does bring everything back to the prehistorical era stage:
Kronika: History rewinds, giving way to the New Era! The realms as you knew them are undone. *Erased.* You cannot save a future that no longer exists! There is only the New Era!
Again, WHY DO TOB'S WORK FOR HIM. Maybe I'm not making a fine distinction here, but if she ERASED the realms by resetting the timeline, doesn't that mean that they're no longer separate and are in fact undifferentiated again? Meaning TOB can come back at that point?
So I guess the burning question is how can Kronika expect to achieve a "golden balance" if her time reset will cause (or, since she has reset the timeline many instances, HAS ALREADY CAUSED) the destruction of both the Elder Gods AND the individual realms?
Why would she ever think Shinnok would go along with her plan to balance light and dark by pitting her own two children against each other if Shinnok was willing and capable of upsetting that balance by releasing TOB?

Anyway guys if you read that comment thanks for stopping by my blog
Also I think Cetrion is a chump for going along with her momma's plan, because risking the release of TOB (the same entity that wants to consume your kind) just to maintain balance in a endless war between you and your brother isn't virtuous at all. (Specially when said brother wants said entity to consume you all)

The same goes for the real life pantheons around the world. They were fallen angels known as the Watchers, who mated with human women and who gave birth to every hero and monster from every mythology in the world. Archangel Michael slew those offsprings and imprisoned the fallen ones but their legacy survived in the form of the ancient relegions of the past AKA idolatry/paganism. I'm Greek and in certain parts of my country, especially under Mt.Olympus, we still have paranormal incidents and demonic activity, because of the rituals of the past. An entire village was abandoned in one day, the people STILL refuse to talk about it and even the people of our Orthodox church aknowledge those events.

Now we have gods in between those gods who also serve purpose who fit nowhere but to extend a universe that’s all over the place. If titans are so huge how we’re mortals able to kill .
