I can't lie I have all the MK games on PC and I still play MK9 the most simply due to the Tag Ladder mode. It's the only MK I can play with my gf where I'm not just either beating her ass constantly or else letting her win 😅
Original Trilogy Athmosphere + 3D Era games Story/Lore + MK9 Roster/Costumes/Concept + MKX gameplay + Shaolin Monks style conquest as the extra mode = the perfect MK game

I give MK9 nothing but praise. One of my favorite aspects of it are the endings, most if not all of which are simply really cool. I just love shit like the irony of Johnny turning into a monk (as well as the Seido namedrop). It's another place MK1 fumbled, because instead of fun "what if" endings it tries an "epilogue to the story mode" approach which is fucking boring because there's no variety and zero closure for the sake of the status quo. You don't find out what the characters did, you find out what they _want_ to do, and the towers also now exist in this weird bubble with no connection to the rest of the game.
Even the two guest endings so far amount to "I WASN'T HERE.... BUT NOW I AM. GUESS I'LL GO KILLIN AGAIN!" Compare that to Alex Murphy becoming what amounts to the god of law enforcement or the Joker living out Shang Tsung's greatest fantasy.
Mk9 had everything Combos, Kombat, fatalities, great roster, fanservice, lots of game content and a good story mode

It's so sad because I don't hate some of them. Mileena's first (not the second) alternative costume is super cool and so is Sindel's. but the other Mileena alternative + Kitana being a princess in a bikini was sooo weird, for a reboot they kept a lot of the super skimpy designs, even Sonya looks just laughable. Then again, I prefer this to the modern blandness of the female designs, god MK1 Mileena, Kitana, Nitara and Li Mei just kinda look wrong, it's so strange

I mean, the 2011 reboot basically just did the first three games in 3D. That's it. The overall story started going downhill, as it usually does once time travel gets involved, but this new one went off the rails. Now I guess only guest characters are the only interesting thing, but they've used all the boomer once already, so don't know how far the modern ones can take them.

You know what I want? Some MK games are based on the endings that MK9 and MK 10 gave us that deal with the consequences of that ending
MK9 was peak Mortal Kombat, characters looked cool instead of lame actors wearing cosplay in a "realistic" artstyle. The stages had that classic Mortal Kombat design, the gameplay was fun and you could actually unlock good stuff in the Krypt.

MK9 is ny all time favorite, mainly because it is a 4 player fighting game, a good fighting game. The amount of laughs we've had with friends playing this 2v2 is unheard of. Absolute banger

MK9 Is the best game Netherrealm still made because it feels like they cared, while I think MKX is good and MK11 is passable, I havnt even bothered TRYING to play MK1, it looks so lame and so greedy like they dont care anymore, while the fatalities are a little iffy at times, and while the game balancing is wack competitively, Its still a great mortal kombat game with lots of love and charm put into it, its still quick and snappy enough where I can play it and not be slow and too sluggish of a game.
Amazing game through and through, best part is? I can fit it on my xbox one without having to download so much damn game content.

I took a huge break from gaming. I left when MK3 released in arcade and returned with MK9 with PS3 because Freddy caught my attention. my favorites are MK9 and MKXL. It seems the only Mortal Kombat I feel I missed out over the decades were Shaolin monks and that made me buy a new PS2

Imo I like the Kameo system it’s new and different. Just cause you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s bad. And the monetization is pretty much ALL on WB which is an actual issue with the game.

I treat mk1 kameos like an extension of the main character not a separate character. And tag was only towers and much more limited in what they could do. You don’t have to like the kameo system but trying to say it’s nothing new is crazy. It’s much better than mkx imo with only 3 ways of playing each character, in mk1 each Kameo can add an entirely different way of playing yours.(not saying mk1 is a better overall game but with variations it is)
I think MK1 is great but we've had so many mk games the burnout can be real and $80 at launch plus $50 for dlc etc. Smart consumers will just wait until the expansion with all dlc with mk 1 is out for $30.

I got this game originally around release for Vita for like $15 (GameStop randomly would have these insane price drops at the time) after having been out of the series since a little after Deadly Alliance and was super impressed. After that I've made a sort of habit of picking up each title a few years after the "Komplete" edition releases. I only just finished up MK 11 on PS5 around the time MK1 came out and will eventually pick that up like five years from now where I'll pay like a quarter the original price with more content.

MK9 will probably always be my favorite, I still grind it out to this day trying to get mastery on all the characters for that last glorious achievement on steam

The timeline was restarted and Liu Kang essentially made these alterations to avoid conflicts. It's not as bad as you make out. The multiple timeline aspect of it, is in fact very interesting and opens up a lot of possibilities. I was also someone who looked at it with a fair amount of scepticism going in and didn't dive into it until yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by it.
All those altercations and he still gave Shang Tsung a shitty life, causing him to yearn for more. MK1's story was utterly shit, I'm supposed to root for Liu Kang when he's the real villain?

Mortal Kombat 9 had fatalities locked behind paywall.
The classic skin pack had fatalities for scorpion, sub-zero and reptile. Also these skins were in the game from day 1 as you could see them in the challenge towers, but to use them in any game mode you had to pay for them. They were already scummy back in the days as well...

Something you have to give MK1, is how they their story mode lowkey makes sense. They don't randomly make characters useless after their chapter, giving good reasons why they can't continue in some adventures for risks. The sectioning is actually pretty consice, earthrealm warrior introductions, mortal kombat tournament, spying on Shang tsung, etc.. the characters accurately altered for fights, for example Kung Lao fights without his hat moves because he doesn't have his buzz hat yet etc. And the main thing for me is how they actually played Mortal Kombat correctly. Shang Tsung was there in mk9 breaking his own tournament rules left and right in the story mode, however Sindel actually played it correctly

The rules that Shang Tsung allowed to break or even broke himself is he allowed already defeated fighters battle in mortal kombat EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ELIMINATED, he allowed teammates to fight each other, he takes some people's personal matters and calls it a "challenge" (for example sub zero and scorpions fight before sub died)
He allows assassination attempts, he allowed himself to suddenly choose someone to fight out of nowhere.
If he's the host of mortal kombat then atleast play by the rules bruh, we all know he's a schemer but how can he be this trash at his own tournament

I got 15 flawless victories and had to fight Noob Saibot. Needless to say, it was painful. Right up until I figured out his fighting pattern thanks to Sub-Zero's ice clone ability. I'd block, ice clone, maybe freeze, then air combo. And I was an absolute menace with Noob Saibot.
There aren’t air combos in this game though.

I would really like to learn how to play MK9. I love the designs in this game. But I just can't do it, the controls are too old, and I just can't combo with any character.
dude. MK9 used to cost 60$ back then when it was released. you can't compare an old game that has lowered its value for being old vs the new MK that was just relased last year. thats very invalid comparasion and ait of an exaggraration..
The point is that mk9 was objectively better at a lower price point and is still way better to play now than mk1.

@opalander yes it does matter, you can't justify a game is better just because one is cheaper now comparing to a game that just came out a few months ago. Mk9 is only cheap to get because it's a 13 year old game that has devalued off from the market a long time ago. The importance on what would be better than the newer game would be the story and gameplay.
MK9 was chef's kiss for the franchise. Only thing is that it was pretty broken af, even some of the lower tier had something extremely unusual for fighting games. Although that was also the charm. Imagine this game in modern day - remove some of the legit glitches, and crossplay/rollback. It would be on and poppin
9 is the last true Mortal Kombat game.
Because it didn't go Woke (and die out) like X, 11 & 1 did, where all the chicks have badly-written plots with pancake-flattened bodies (Warner Brothers is to blame for this).
It would've made sense if the skimpy/revealing outfits are only worn in fiery/humid stages, while the overdressed costumes are only worn in icy/windy stages.

MK9 is my favorite MK game of all time…it was not perfect, but it was so much fun and the online tag mode was my favorite because my friends and I would team up to play people online for hours!!! I would love a remastered version of MK9!!

Me and my two other friends who are longtime MK fans all agree that MK9 was peak. It was just perfect.

Here’s the thing, I defend mk1 as I feel people can be unfair to the game because the gameplay is good and that’s th most important thing in. A fighter, however I do prefer mk9

The fatalities are $3 now. The combo potential and flexibility in combo routes is like no other mortal combat. They just need to keep the characters coming. All the pro players agree this game plays best and has the most potential. The studio got rushed but I think we’ll get there. I’ve been addicted since it came out.
MK9 was definitely the last good Mk game. Unfortunately it’s preservation is non existent.
This "definitely" has little value. This "definitely" is definitely debatable. I'd say in the fighting game genre MK is one of the few series where each game actually has something going for it, while I really can't say the same about many of the others. I really enjoyed Tekken 3 for example, but everything after that has been so disappointing and boring in that series, no innovation, character animations exactly the same for 20 years, nothing new to discover.
I must state I have not played Tekken 8 yet, but bought 7 during a sale a few months back, and damn it was a let down. The story mode had something, but no character was interesting enough to want to do much after that. They were exactly the same as in Tekken 3, without the factor of being somehow new and exciting, and the new characters were just copies of the old ones with "he is from Sweden, he is from Russia" as defining characteristics, as I would care for nationalities in a game series that has had much more interesting characters, like pandas, dinosaurs, elderly people that mainly fight laying down, characters made of logs. Somehow they decided to concentrate on boring human characters with their nationality intended as the most interesting aspect about them and no imagination in the gameplay or move sets.
Compared to that I would say MK9 - MK1 all games have had quite a lot to be excited about. Admittedly with some experiments that missed their mark as well, but that is the price of actually trying to do something new instead of lazily reskinning the same game for 20 years as some other series are doing. Tekken was just an example because of a recent burn, but there are others.
To end on a positive note, Killer Instinct which I only got to this year, was a very imaginative and excitin experience, and without this tiresome "content" stuff, just plain old unlocking of character endings and some cosmetic stuff, the interesting stuff was in the actual gameplay, not in the "rewards".

first time i saw the characters face model and UI menu in MK1, i immediately knew the game will flop
I actually thought mk1 was gonna be like the older games like mk9 when I saw the cinematic trailer for the new game, it looked soooo realistic and grounded, not so many different characters, it really felt like simpler and I loved it at first at least
All I needed was the Umgadi trailer and I was like “nope”!
