Jax's Arms Are So Metal - Mortal Kombat History
Vložit
- čas přidán 25. 08. 2016
- This time around, I explore the history behind Jax's metal arms - including the various rumors behind how he acquired them in the games, different takes on his arms in other MK media (comics, movies, TV), and even some real-world stuff that Mortal Kombat either inspired or predicted.
Update: Since this video has come out, we've gotten a couple more alternate stories for how Jax got his metal arms!
* Goro tore them off (Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge)
* Sub-Zero froze and shattered them (Mortal Kombat 2021 movie, as shown in the red band trailer)
W3132❤❤
It takes tremendous dedication to have your arms removed and replaced with metal arms just for a CZcams video. I applaud you sir.
So sad
Damn, Sonya and sub zero just stood there twiddling their thumbs as jax got disarmed
Ernesto Pena I didn't realize that back when I played MK9 all those years ago...guess I was just too caught up in the suspense of the moment and all. But watching it again on this video I had noticed that as well and just shook my head.
Guess Kuai Liang and Sonya Blade we're just too caught up in the suspense as well. But I guess when you're making a Jax omlette...
Sub-Zero didn't really care about Special Forces at the time, just getting back at Scorpion. Sonya (who called Sub-Zero out on it) has no such excuse.
literally😭
Imagine Jax as a Shokan
In the original timeline, Jax never lost his arms. He had them fitted when he realized what he was up against. Jax didn't fully understand how serious the situation was and what was at stake. He wasn't ready to go against foes who had supernatural abilities that wanted to invade earth, he was only answering a distress signal Sonya put out. His mission was to rescue Sonya and apprehend Kano. Like the soldier Jax is, he put on the Bionic arms cause he was preparing for war.
true, i remember that
Yeah, that's what I figured. Probably Jax's Bionic Arms were prototypes that he had tested during his mission to stop Kano and the Black Dragon. And when he returned to the SF HQ, it was successful. And In my theory, Jax probably had some of his SF technicians or experts in Cybernetics do some upgrades on his bionic arms, while as you said, went to Outworld to rescue Sonya, alongside his buddies, Liu Kang and others.
Actually from mk3 up to mk4 they were bionic implants after that they were actual bionic arms
I don't even know these dudes!!
Gee, Thanks, Jax.
(john tobias) left MIDWAY through the game (mksf)
Boiii if you don't
AHAHAHA I've seen this video a couple of times and never caught that. The puns are incredible.
The secret to Jax' strength is he always makes breakfast with armalade
I actually thought Jax's arms were never grafted to him before the MK9 reboot. Some clips from Defenders of the Realm also show that when his arms weren't working, he took them off and had regular arms underneath as well (although I know that's still not canon but it is another source besides Annihilation showing them not being part of his body).
I also assumed that the wording of his MK3 bio meant that he "outfits" them as in stuck them on as enhancements over his regular arms. The extension that connects both arms also disappears from Jax's back in MKDA but I know design change is not something taken into account very often in the MK world because people's faces change every game almost.
But I also thought the description for his alternate in the MK Armageddon Krypt said that he actually switched into that for casual wear and not that it was a prequel or non-canon outfit in this instance.
That last bit I didn't know.
Jax's original design in MK2 has him wearing metal gauntlets, they're even painted on John Parrish's arms in behind the scene photos
Thanks to his MK3 fatality and the T-1000 from the Terminator 2 movie, I thought his arms were liquid metal.
That actually makes sense!
Actually, Jax isn't exactly wrong. Neither is Sonia for that matter. Brains are important. But so is Braun. Basically, I think Jax's started relying too much on one and not the other. Of course, part of the reason he probably went back to wearing his bionics at the end of the episode may have simply been because the people who made the cartoon wanted to keep Jax's familiar appearance for the sake of the fans.
That's the excuse jax used in the episode.
Awesome as always!
You shoulda got shirtless for this one
I often wonder if Jax's MKX primary, was partially inspired by the Annihilation look
I take the whole “Ermac ripped off Jax’s arms” as the true canon. Makes sense to me. ^_^
Dude i really love your videos.you do a great job.im going through all your stuff.cant wait to see new videos from you.
Probably in *Mortal Kombat: Special Forces* Jax's Bionic Arms were prototypes that Jax had tested during his mission to stop Kano and the Black Dragon.
I personally prefer the new time line. It just feels right that his arms are damaged rather than him "not being strong enough".
the origin arms look Cable inspired.
Maybe that's it. John Tobias was a comic book artist before he got into Midway so it makes sense he took inspiration from some!
seems like the mk storyline is constantly changing
What I don't understand is that Sub-Zero was able to go back to his human body during his service to Quan Chi.... why didn't Jax choose to get his arms back?
Hey there,
Judging by the MKX comics, that wasn't the revenants' choice to make - it was at Quan Chi's discretion what form they would take.
Very awesome video, Tabmok99.
When I 1st saw Jax with the metal arms in a video gaming magazine when I was 10 years old, some questions that often went through my head were these...
"How does Jax swim with those arms?"
"Can he even swim with those arms?"
"Wouldn't his arms rust if wet?"
@Stalin being that the dude was 10 years old at the time, that in itself should pretty much answer your question.
@Stalinwell the majority of kids don't take the time to think about metallic compounds, alloys, corrosive chemicals, what types rust & the conditions for them to do so. Their brains are too busy hopping from one thought to the next to stay focused on one train of thought for any considerable amount of time, unless being directed by a their parents or teachers to do so. Attention spans are in short supply for the adolescent mind.
Okay, but let's be honest, that DoTR episode was laughable at best. Jax is just like "my extensive military training is completely useless without my metal arms!"
Seriously. These videos are great. I love your word play and passion for the series
Tabmok99's videos give me more than my daily recommended dose of Vitamin P (Puns).
Fucking stupid and corny
@@hamburgers25 I absolutely love them, theyre great. Why are you being so rude ? Do you need to get punished ?
@@mathieuwiersma1660 oh yess 😏 spank mehhh 😏
@@hamburgers25 It is rumored that in MK12 the Special Forces will use mechs and Jax will have a metal army
@@mathieuwiersma1660 where did u hear these rumors ? Is Sonia still dead ? Haven’t played mK in about 10 months
I'm glad you're making these videos!!! I'm die hard MK and always thought Jax was the first character in a fighting game to start the bionic arm trend, followed by TJ Combo from Killer Instinct and Bryan from Tekken.
Killer Instinct was actually out before MK3, so T. J. Combo may have started this trend!
Love the videos, but Jax beating Kintaro made sense in a way he was much faster also he can take them off in the original.
All the concept art, creative thought and interviews on Jax' arms, yet no canon explanation for the Stomp Fatality?
Ah, I figured out this one. His metal arms must have contained a Molecular Amplification Unit!
tabmok99 Probably Jax must have utilized the metal arms as prototypes in *Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.*
I can confirm this is the case. Here's a magazine scan where John Tobias says exactly that:

Binge binge binge!
OneHitterJoe Your thumbnail resembles a young Ed Boon... Irony, coincidence or Boon's illegitimate son? You decide.
Hahaahahah nah I wish @green goblin
Ermac just wanted to see a T-Pose
11:03 lmao Ermacs smirk
this guy is my kind of nerd
"Don't hate the player, hate the game." Subbed.
You didn't mention how he was planned for MK1 with metal gauntlets with the name Kurtis Stryker. You're usually up on this type of stuff.
Thanks for the shoutout though.
Haha that whole Jax/Sonya/Stryker switcheroo thing from MK1 always cracks me up. Especially when you consider that by the time MK1 was being tested, they almost scrapped it completely and were testing it with 6 characters. They got feedback from players and realized they needed a female at the last minute and threw in Sonya, giving her the famous backstory which we all know (but which was originally written for Stryker)
I think it was more of a matter that it had nothing to do with his metal arms and more of just general Jax history so it wasn't needed, no?
He was always supposed to have the metal arms, and they wanted a klang effect when his punches hit.
On MK4 you can actually hear those klang noises back and forth. MK4 was great to me but they still should've worked on the game some more so it could be as challenging as the third game.
To be honest, I always thought that Jax's arms in MK3 were more like an apparatus that could be removed at will (I justify that by pointing to his back), and from Deadly Alliance forward, his biological arms were outright replaced with mechanical ones.
Maybe his arms were ALWAYS intended to be 100% mechanical replacements for his natural arms...
Did Jax get the metal from the weapon dealers in Armenia ?
Yeah, standard part of their armament
Good video! 😎
Man i remember thinking why Jax had the metal arms in Special Forces, I remember someone commented that they were prototypes and it makes me think, Why didn't he use them in MK2 if Special Forces was a prequel? granted MK2 was made long before special forces but like everything else in the MK universe, there are some plot holes that was made later.
To be fair, the prototypes might've been glove/sleeves like Annahillation, and he didn't have them in MKII because they were being upgraded or perfected.
Yeah that makes sense, You could be right
so jax is a megalo boxer
Jax favourite foods: Military MRI's
Haha, they put MRI like the medical disagnostic procedure that you have to sit sitll for! People aren't crazy about those, either!
what about baraka cause i heard he cut off jax arms in a fight
That's right! I showed that here (from the Malibu comics)
Quick question tabmok... Did the creators of MK pull any inspiration from the Arcade game Yie Ar Kung-Fu. Thanks in advance. Im a big Arcade fan.
I'd never seen or heard anything indicating that particular game as an inspiration. I'd seen Pit Fighter mentioned, though.
I never knew it was a cartoon mad late lol
Shout out to the true story behind the movie "Soul Surfer" .
Wait... why was jax tied down to the table??
Probably in case his arms malfunction.
I don’t even know those dudes
