I don't know why people with no ideas think they can improve on someone else's.
I wish they didn’t have any ideas so they didn’t get bad ideas about changing existing stories.
They aren't trying to improve they are trying to Virtue signal.
@@admirekashiri9879 As is with most SJW's.
They know they can't improve on the original. That isn't the intention. The objective is taking advantage of a literary masterpiece with a huge number of followers that's embedded in the collective unconscious, and use it as a vehicle to broadcast a sociopolitical agenda to the masses. It's cultural engineering.
They're either stupid or malicious
A “multicultural tribe” is such an oxymoron
A tribe by definition is homogeneous. But I'd love to see multi cultural Sioux in a remake of "Custers last stand"
Let's take some legend from Africa and turn it into multicultural movie. I'm sure everyone will be fine with it ?
It's the problem of associating ethnicity with culture. Just because you look a certain way, doesn't mean that you fit into a certain mold. For some of these people, they just want people who look different.
@@kenton6804 that is understandable, but what I don't understand is why they tend to "fix it" in most illogical ways ?
@@ktopfield145 I don't either. Generally, though, some of the people they choose for these jobs aren't people who are entirely all there 100% of the time. Some of it is in the brain, and so it isn't entirely rational, but when you combine that with political ideology, it's just a mess.
“We’re an indigenous population of harfoots… We’re multicultural.”

Well, actually it could -- each tribe has its own culture. But if we call things for what they are, and instead of "multicultural" say "multiracial", then yes, there is a problem there.
@@user-tr4ej8mw4s I’ve given it some thought, and hypothetically I can’t see a problem with your statement. Practically however this shouldn’t really happen. A single race of people co-existing as multiple tribes in a single region will always develop a shared culture for obvious reasons. The differences between tribes in the same region is nothing more drastic than people from different cities supporting different football teams; they all support the same national team. Even a single race of people existing as separate tribes in two separate but ultimately similar regions usually develop culturally almost in parallel with one other. It takes centuries just for their language to reach to the point where the two people could not understand one another in conversation, by which point they would be classed as different races anyway.
Actually there’s a point. If these harfoots were truly multicultural they’d all speak different languages, have different festivals, different music, different food. But like you say, “multicultural” as in fact a euphuism.
One of the creator's of Netflix's He-Man said that they don't create new characters because the fans might not accept them. It's easier, he said, to change an existing character in order to be more inclusive. He admitted... they're lazy. I'm sure most true Tolkien fans have already disregarded this Amzon nonsense.
The sad part is that people who know nothing about the books will eat this up and think of themselves as the "true" fans, just like what happened with Discovery. They will keep it going and then it will never fade from the public mind. Book fans will just be "haters."

“Based on the Silmarillion, which is almost like a cheat sheet for the second and third ages.”
No.
No, that’s not AT ALL what it’s like.
It was enough of a stretch in PJ's movies that the Shire had accents from different parts of England and Scotland (I don't remember any Welsh or Irish hobbits) but at least it was generally accepted that hobbits kept mostly to themselves and their families and had a great respect for tradition so it could follow that accents would remain from the first settlers of different hobbit breeds.
If this series is going to suggest that an initially diverse group that isn't going to be massive could live together and not breed themselves beige without some sort of active segregation is going to take some explaining.
They did that because it was stated by Tolkien that the Hobbits represent the everyday Englishman. And since the Tooks live in a hilly part of the country which makes for great defenses, are stubborn, will put up a fight, and invented golf, it made sense they would be Scottish.
It wasn't just Peter Jackson who did that, the BBC radio play also made use of English regional accents for the Hobbits. Andy Serkis also used it for his readings of the Tolkien works, but to be fair, I think his performance was partly coloured by the New Line Cinema/Peter Jackson franchise and his role in it.
I think there is a tacit understanding that Hobbits are a quintessentially English archetype, and as such, also sound the part.
And as above, there were different genealogical lineages among the Hobbits, which could justify differing accents.
You say that Hobbits are insular enough that they should remain almost genetically identical, and yet there was enough diversity in that regard such that the "Proudfoot" clan had exceptionally larger and hairier feet than most.
Does is particularly make sense, when each Hobbit is likely first cousins with their neighbours? Probably not. But it's how Tolkien wrote the world.
No hobbits, but Gimli had a Welsh accent.
My friend was just saying how he hates reboots and rewrites... And this is why.

@Nathan Wong Going "woke" is one of the easiest ways for a franchise to get free publicity : people praise it, ridicule it, or get riled up by it... and the brand gets the attention it was seeking. It's free marketing, plain and simple.
It's a problem that shouldn't be ignored, and it has plagued entertainment for years... but if you address that problem while playing along with everyone else, the brand still wins in the end. At some point, the only way to win the outrage game is not to play.
I like the fact that you're a fan first before everything else. Enjoy your content immensely for that reason and also that you really think about what you say and how you're going to say it. Like Tolkien.
Get ready for loud music and outdoor arguments at all hours of the night, gand graffiti on the walls, and the sounds of gunshots from nightly drive-by's in the shire.
Excellent breakdown of the Hobbit issue. First, nothing significant was done by Hobbits in the second Age, nothing at all in Eriador. Second, browner of skin is lighter than brown of skin is a different color from black of skin. Tolkien was a contributor for the Oxford Dictionary. The professor was an expert wordsmith.
When we hire people based on diversity rather than actual skill, this is what we get.
I don't hold out hope for anything anymore.
I'm here with a large, a very large, bag of popcorns to last until the next fall to see how this billion-dollar production is going to sink like a cinderblock on its own just so they can make their very own LOTR stories.

Amazon could have saved a fortune and just followed a group of cos-players walking round a hotel, at this point they'd be closer to the source material
I’d watch that
After many a long mile traversed through darkest night our heroes reach their destination: the hotel. Suddenly Nathaniel Strong-arm's face turns pale as he reaches into his pocket.
"I think we need to go back guys," he announced. "I think I forgot my wallet at the Pizza Hut."
"Go by yourself," Brittany the Bitchslapper answered. "I'm tired, and I really need to get out of this corset..."
"That's the problem. My keys are in my wallet," Nathaniel replied grimly.
Frank the Filthy scoffed, "So what? I'm sure somebody here as a spare key." The group checked their pockets, only to be met with disappointment. "Really? None of you remembered to bring a key?"
"Then we must return to the Pizza Hut!" Nathaniel announced. "Forth, and fear no darkness!"

“The native people of England are very Caucasian” you’d get done for hate speech saying that here in England mate. I won’t be watching this Amazon series I’ll tell you
England has had relatively sizable non-native minorities for several centuries, due to our global naval traditions, but they tended to be concentrated around the various ports (London, Newcastle, Liverpool etc) with a smattering of some further inland, often related to people returning from extended service in the various reaches of the Empire (Africans and Indians mostly, who emigrated here when their employers returned from a stint overseas and retired to their country piles). Even so, until the arrival of coal powered steam ships, and more recently cheap international air travel, the %age remained pretty low compared to the population as a whole

All your Tolkien videos are amazing! Thank you for the quality content!
It’s like they don’t understand that there was a time before all the cultures, races, & kingdoms of the world came together & mixed. That’s the kind of world almost every fantasy works in. Gondor, Rohan, elves, dwarves, hobbits; they’re separated & don’t get along until they have to.

In "1984" Orwell writes "every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

Thank you. I was waiting for you to cover this
Tolkien was describing a highland people, rocks and crags specifically. That means shepherds and goatherds, lots of time in the sun with little shade hence "browner of skin" and Tolkien would have known that.
Makes sense I work construction in the sun alot of times so my complexion is red instead of pale white
Or basically serfs and peasants. They usually worked under the sun, expect that they have a bit of brown skin via heat exposure.
Biologically speaking people found closer to the equator tend to have darker skin as an adaptation. While up north people get whiter skin to get more uv rays
@@glorioustigereye That is true but my argument is that they spend significantly more time in the sun than other Hobbits which "browns" their skin. We call it tanning.
So your saying your ok with Black hobbits because "They are tan". Got it. What about black elves? Does that bother you? To be honest this is a strange hill to die on. As long as they aren't race/gender swapping ESTABLISHED characters and the show has good acting and plot i will enjoy it. We already have black humans in the shadow of wars LOTRO game. Some other things not in the canon as well.
