      But he did at least tweak Tolkien's themes to some extent. I'm trying to find it still, but there's an interview with Jackson where he said that, not being catholic, he didn't put too many of the catholic underpinnings that Tolkien put into the story into his movie.
      And also, there's a huge theme of all of the movies about overcoming isolationism which is more Jackson's touch than Tolkien's. So this "we don't put our themes into Tolkien" is nice, but its not entirely true.
      The funny thing is that this interview was hated by "purist" fans
      Just a few examples from the 2001 thread:
      "I'm not so much angry at the changes as I am in the way that Peter Jackson is speaking out of both sides of his mouth. He claims that he is being true to the Characters as J.R.R. wrote them, and that he is a huge fan and wouldn't make radical alteration to the mass media, and then attempting to smooth the feathers of the Real fan base by explaining and making statements that NEVER get the attention of the mass media. It's as though there are TWO of him.
      He's playing a game...he's trying to keep the public ill informed so that they believe he is a genius...that he has created the definative movies from the books, and yet those of us who really DO see the books as wonderous gifts, portals to a completely different world inhabbited by marvelous characters who have real motivations and are aware of the deep and glorious history of their world, instead of a really neat bunch of stories to make money off of.
      my complaint is with Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema and the major media outlets all making the claim that Peter Jackson is a genius and a true Tolkien purist who is working his hardest at bringing the definative telling of this story, and succeeding in creating Tolkien's intent and vision of the tale for the big screen. The ploy is quite obviously designed to convince the general public that this is going to be a direct screen adaptation of the original story and characters, and that Peter Jackson is some sort of mesianic wunderkind who read every chapter straight out of the book along with the cast before shooting the corresponding scene, then create a diatribe about how some Tolkien Scholar was wowed by the sets, and how the crew is painstakingly creating Swords and Props that have Elvish inscribed on them that actually MEANS something, yet not word one to address things like Peter Jackson INVENTING dialog, changing characters for no good reason and all the time bragging that he is being true to the Author's Characters and Story...
      and here comes P.J. and his press department spinning tales of how this Director is going all out to reproduce the books in true form, when he has tossed many of these rules and laws out the window out of fear that an audience would be too stupid...or too uptight...or have too short of an attention span to ever accept, let alone enjoy the story that was voted one of the top ten greatest of the past millenium, and tell it in the manner that the author employed to thrill MILLIONS of readers since it's publication...
      From the many quotes I've seen from PJ and actors, they have a pretty warped idea of "lover of the books" and "staying true to the story". What a load of two-sided, speaking out of both sides of the mouth, drivel!"

He doesn't look like a character, he looks like an actor in costume.
    And frankly, why could he not just have long hair? Why doesn't Elrond have long hair, or the other Elf males for that matter? Why are they all trimmed up like it's the modern day with gel-styled fluff? Is it because they're worried we won't be able to tell the difference and accidentally misgender a fictional character? "you have been told many lies of middle-earth" AH! there it is... Granted I have no context for who is saying this of what.... But this line may have just put into words why I am so fundamentally about the show when I'm not even that familiar with the pre-Hobbit history of middle-earth. It'd be easy to give up and try to salvage the show by saying "ah well they made a few tweaks, but so did Peter Jackson. Inevitably, it had to happen." But no, it's the fundamental premise within this line. The history of middle-earth that Tolkien himself wrote is a lie. Because Tolkien only wrote from the straight white male perspective. Tolkien's legendarium is a revisionist. The middle-earth you know is not so. Like by the way, Galadriel was actually a battle warrior (but Tolkien reduced her to a merely symbol of feminine grace and beauty because she's a woman). Oh, and Harfoots actually were important, but you didn't know because (they're actually black Hobbits). Elves can be black too (but you didn't know that because Tolkien didn't want to tell you). Female dwarves are beardless and black too (Tolkien was just wrong). It's this insistence that there's this fundamental error in Tolkien's history and they just have to fix it.... IDK about you guys, but I only read a "fix-it" fic when I believe the story needed fixing.

      I think the most important part your statement is "Granted I have no context for who is saying this of what...". Says most of what needs to be said. Maybe try waiting for the show to actually come out before deciding it's no good. So far there has been what, 3 minutes total footage shown, none of with any context of when it takes place in the series. No movie ever has gone from book to movie or series without any changes, including Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit moves. Those turned out pretty good even with the changes. Not everything that works in a book will work for a series.

When they announced the cast, I waited to see if they would be Haradrim or Easterlings, etc. I'm not an extreme purist to the degree many are. I'm also willing to overlook minor things like bad costumes or CGI (even though they have really no excuse with a budget like they have). I was more than generous. And I am even willing to say some bits of the show look decent (for instance the two trees of Valinor).
      However, I am not willing to sacrifice the spirit of Tolkien's work on the altar of woke... I'm a Protestant evangelical Christian, but I recognize that Tolkien was Catholic and regard, as Tolkien himself came to, that LOTR is fundamentally a Catholic work. But we would at least share common values and Tolkien is timeless enough that the themes are made clear. Meanwhile I'm afraid we also have plenty of statements, interviews, photos, clips, etc. to show that the writers do not share any of Tolkien's values, nor do they care to respect them. It has already pandered to intersectionality, it already has pandered to feminism, and it already has openly broken lore. That is quite enough for me. At this point, any good in the show is lost amidst a swirling sea of bad.

    • @musicinthemachine
      @musicinthemachine Před rokem

      @@ohifonlyx33 First, just because Tolkien may have been Catholic, that doesn't mean his writing is a Catholic work. His books have nothing to do with real world religions. The only thing the Lord of the Rings has in common with Earth religions is that it was made up by a person. No movie that has ever been made based on a book, was ever made without changing any part of it. Things that work in a book won't always work in a movie or series. Also if by pandering to feminism, you mean treating women like they are real people instead the the property of men, then that is a good thing. Also allowing that people in a fictional story are allowed to have more than one skin tone, I don't see as any problem with regard to Tolkien's values. What you seem to think is "woke" is just normal reality of equality of people in the world. Woke itself is generally a term used by those who feel that others don't deserve to be on the same level as themselves for whatever reason. To those people all I can say is get over yourself already. Maybe, but the shot successfully tells what it needs to tell.
      I just don't understand. What did you want it to look like? Did you want more helmets so that the pile takes up a bigger portion of the frame? Did you want the helmet pile in the center of the shot? Again very subjective stuff. If Sauron just does it then it robs them of agency and accountability. "The timeline is totally FUBAR" --> perhaps even more importantly, his CHARACTER is totally FUBAR. I already commented on this on one of your previous videos, but BY GOD does it bear repeating: Finrod is one of my all-time favourites in all of Tolkien's lore, and to see him so simplistically eviscerated, even as mere background to this "story", just utterly hurts my soul.
    First off, the look they've gone with for the character is completely bonkers; short-haired Elves with blatantly human features, really? That honestly maims the eye more than the beardless Dwarves for me. And Finrod himself is described as the "finest and fairest" among even the Eldar, he's so angelically beautiful in face and body and voice that the Edain thought they'd reached Valinor itself just by seeing and hearing him play his harp before them. Elena Kukanova has done such incredible renditions of him through the years, Amazon could have literally used her art as the readiest reference on Earth for him, but apparently cannot be arsed to perform a grand total of two Google searches.
    Worse yet, these trailers appear to be depicting him as having perished in a battle of some sort. Which is SUCH. LORE-BREAKING. BULLSHIT. Finrod's death is arguably the most important aspect of his journey as a person, precisely because it has NOTHING to do with glory or conquest or even the defence of a stronghold. Finrod Felagund, finest and fairest of all Elves, dies in brutal, unarmed combat with a Werewolf to save a life none in his kingdom thought worthy of love or help -- that of the mortal Man Beren. He dies naked and battered and bitten to bloody death, in the dungeons of a tower he himself had built once upon a time that Sauron had taken from him and then imprisoned him in. And he dies willingly and gladly for the sake of a single mortal life, something unthinkable to most Elves, among whom Finrod was so beloved and revered. You're telling me you're gonna take something THIS POIGNANT and regurgitate it in the form of the most generic scenario possible, him dying in combat like a random soldier just so wannabe-Galadriel can have some man-pain sprinkled atop her motivations? Nonsense of the highest order.

    Bingo. Aside from the distortions and “adjustments” of the lore that we were expecting to encounter, the trailer on its own merits was too deliberately enigmatic and mercurial. It teases and confuses rather than delineates. Serious Tolkien fans should at least be able to identify almost all of the motifs at work in the trailer, but even we/they are left guessing. It appears to be more of a collage than a proper trailer. Visually stunning, certainly, but incoherent, to put it mildly. As for the androgynous figure with the blonde buzzcut and what appear to be two zits (or spider bites-Shelob?) on his/its left cheek, that can’t possibly be Sauron. What a foolish and anticlimactic “reveal” that would be … on top of an oblique “trailer.” It only seems plausible that Sauron is in some way related to the meteor and its hairy occupant. Maybe blondie is a minion of Sauron or another escaped spirit from Valinor, perhaps a fire-spirit/balrog incarnated in flesh? A cohesive, linear trailer would be advisable before the series launch, I’d say. But does the world even “do” cohesive, anymore? Everything’s gotta friggin’ intersect until structural thought is reduced to fragments. Good luck, Tolkien fans and lovers of storytelling. I am going to watch the show and hope for the best, wish for the best. No one should want such an effort to fail, if for the honor of Tolkien’s mythology alone. And I’m certain many artistic careers, large and small, are riding on this. We shall soon see.

They used a shot from "The Ring Goes South" portion of the film where every member of the Fellowship crests a hill. I got chills watching it bc I could tell exactly who every character was by the casting, acting, and costumes. With these RoP trailers, if I hadn't already known who has been cast in which roles, the only person I would recognize would be galadriel, and even then I would doubt myself bc of how they are choosing to portray her.

  • @michelelyons9410
    @michelelyons9410 Před rokem +4

    My first thought when I saw this trailer was that this would not happen. Can you imagine Glaladriel, an Elf Queen, or other elves piling up the bare skulls of their fallen dead in a huge , horrific, mountainous pile? I might see some privative tribe of head hunters doing that, but elves? Yeah, I don't think so. How would you react to seeing the heads of your honored dead piled up like that, after a modern day battle? I, for one, would not react well. That is more the kind if thing that enemy orcs would do. and Orcs would do such a thing only to insult, terrorize and humiliate their enemies. Elves are the most educated, civilized of beings in Middle Earth. They would bury or burn a body, do something to honor the fallen, their lost loved ones----I bloody well cannot see them piling up bare skulls. I do not think that Queen Galadriel would treat the remains of an enemy with such disrespect, much less a loved one. I have to agree, this trailer was just as bad as the others before it. I also agree that Amazon wrote themselves into a corner. They did not think people would react so negatively to their show and now don't know what to do. There probably IS no plot, and most likely will involve pretty poor story telling. The attitude of the entertainment industry is that customers just look at the pretty pictures, and supposedly don't care about characters, consistency, good story telling, or plots that make sense. So they treat us like brainless toddlers, give us pretty pictures and loud noises, and forget that there is actually supposed to be a story in there somewhere.

    Why did they even bother buying the rights to the Lord of the Rings if they were just going to discard 90% of it to tell their own original story? They could've just made their own fantasy series.
    I just don't understand why so many Hollywood productions do this. You buy a recognizable name because of the built-in audience that comes with it, but the built-in audience isn't going to stick around if you're completely disrespecting the source material they're fans of; and new viewers aren't going to care what it's based on. So why do it, other than just to deliberately destroy something people love?
    That's it, isn't it? All this is just to deliberately take a popular western myth and corrupt it in service of the modern agenda, because the original beloved property is now "problematic".
