At long last, AMD has launched their new Zen 4 CPUs, Ryzen 7950X, 7900X, 7700X, and 7600X, and they look great. Alongside the enhancements of socket AM5, these new chips look like they give Intel a run for their money... or do they? AMD has a bit of an issue of not being better than their best gaming chip, or better value than Intel's platform which makes some of these chips hard to recommend. And with Intel's Raptor Lake looming on the horizon, AMD's future might not look so bright anymore.

Having your previous gen "niche" part outperform most of your new gen parts goes to show how insane 3D V-Cache is. Now if they were to debut it on Zen4 as a 7800x3D...
Rumor has it that it's coming sooner than it came for 5000.
also it helps AMD in getting MORE customers. Because not everyone will go to the newest CPU - the costs are higher and it's still a first gen of AM5, and many, especially companies, are not early adopters. But they know, they can still upgrade their Zen 1 to a Zen 3 in the future and get quite the performance of a Zen 4. (Don't forget, that many companies will be forced to do that in 2023-2025, when Windows 10 gets into the finish line of their support time thanks to Microsoft schenanigans)
@@Vilmir I hope so!
7000 series vcache might show it's face Q1 23'
@@Vilmir I would hope so, the Zen3 launch was the first of it's kind / more of a "test run", and now that it's been proven to be a real game changer, I'd imagine it shouldn't take long for them to start slapping it into possibly more than just 1 SKU this gen
More than anything this highlights just how *insane* the 5800X3D is. I can't wait for the 3D 7000 chips.
AMD AND COUNTER STRIKE ARE BEST FREINDS PROVE ME WRONG
You mean the i9 12900k ans 5800x3d because the 12900k was right there with the 7950x also.
@@reviewforthetube6485 it's the KS one. 5800x3d beats the regular 12900k.
zen4 with 3d v-cache, it's gonna be incredibly hot

Honestly having integrated graphics saved my butt when my dedicated gpu died on me suddenly and it was next to impossible to source a new one during the shortage. Sure quality and frames took a huge hit but it was still usable (and playable) to the point that by the time I received a new card over a year later I had gotten used to it lol.
Doesn’t happened enough the last 5 years for me to care about integrated graphics
Yep, and that's why I took the decision last year to buy a 5600G rather than an X and lost a few CPU benchmark points. But in daily driving I honestly wouldn't know. I had to test out the integrated graphics without my discrete GPU in and if you're happy to reduce the graphics quality a little, games will still look and work fine. Not great, but not bad either, so it makes a good lifeboat if the worst happens until you can afford a new discrete GPU.
@StrizFPS I've been having random crashes in my system since I installed a RX 6700 XT(PowerColor Fighter). Which model RX 6700 XT is giving you trouble?
Gamers when they find they don't have to but the most expensive hardware
i used to be able to play fable on a motherboard with integrated graphics on the bulldozer architecture, turning off half the cores truly unlocked its potential.
6:16 I would say that a 40% lead going from the 5700X to the 7700X is mighty impressive.
also in price as today
The thing that sells it for me are the minimums. They kill in averages, but the actual experience improvement is unreal.
Not "unreal" improvements. We have seen uplifts greater than this before. Actually quite disappointed. The high end is crazy fast for sure, but draws 250W and the low end is not very impressive in terms of price to performance vs last gen Intel.
@@slartibartfast2649 I mean, every uplift from after the 80s is quite disappointing, making games go from unplayable to bearly playable
I'm interested to know how those minimums are measured. The 3950X had reported decent minimums, but the actual experience in some games is nearly unplayable (at least for someone like me that values smoothness) due to the CCX design. Even a game like minecraft which is often a cakewalk today often has stutter and hitching issues that make it difficult to enjoy. I've seen this with every game I play and it makes me almost wish I went 9th gen Intel at the time since the other Intel systems in my family were getting higher and smoother FPS.
In your benchmarks I think I can speak for a lot of people using older parts like my Ryzen 9 3900XT that we'd like to see the difference between these older parts and the brand new ones. Not just a comparison between the brand new one and the one that came out right before. It's a pretty small portion of your audience that has the newest one that's out and looking to upgrade to the next one immediately.
Preach
You would think it would be pretty simple for them They had to have tested those chips in the past. I'm sure we could all go-a-searching for those videos and then compare the numbers, but, like, they should already have thosen umbers. How hard is it to add another slide to their video and 30 seconds of script to account for it?
to be honest you will not see big differences. the ting is a Ryzen 3900xt is still more then enough to handle even 4k gaming with 60 - 100+ fps
Gamers nexus has a test that includes the Ryzen 7 1700 for what its worth.
That might be too much data for a video though, a lot to compare in 15 minutes. Maybe if they start posting an online website summary that be great.
But I think the reason still is good enough to just show against the last gen, is this is more about what should you buy next, its a worthy comparison since last gen chips will still be sold for a little while and be cheaper, to see if its worth it to actually get the newest gen
Whatever the case, I'm just glad that AMD and Intel are finally very competitive (In the desktop/laptop market). It was rather annoying during the 2010's when AMD had no competitor to Intel's top chips. The huge gain in single core performance has convinced me to upgrade my 3900x to a 7900x.
Although, Intel is still not competitive enough with AMD's EPYC server CPU's, and barely competitive with Thread Ripper. In that segment, you're better off going AMD.
Im in the same boat, ive got a 3900x right now and cant decide what to upgrade to. Its driving me nuts!
@@wdunn06 I got my 7900x a few days ago. Awesome performance, but the DDR5 side of it seems to be a little bit finicky. It took me an hour just to get it to boot. Had to turn off EXPO, then it started working. Turned EXPO back on yesterday and suddenly it's working fine now. Except POST takes like, 20-30 seconds. It apparently has to "train" the DDR5 timings during POST and that can take a long time.
My advice: Give it a few months. There's also the rumored Zen 4 X3D versions coming in January!
@The SeanUhTron Thanks for your advice mate I appreciate it. I never knew the ddr5 had to be essentially trained, interesting. What is this X3D thing I keep seeing it man?
@@wdunn06 X3D is 3D V-Cache, it's essentially a massive L3 cache which can improve performance by a significant amount.
I've got a 5800X I bought not all that long ago (I think the X3D was technically available but I couldn't find any at a reasonable price). Don't game all too often nowadays (I'd like to fix that but I've got to get my arse in gear and find a different job), so I'm in no rush to upgrade. Next upgrade will probably be a graphics card but my old RTX2700 is still going strong and only struggles with a couple of games that are probably not well optimized.
Well, Linus convinced me that my purchase of 5800x3D was a good choice, well done Linus!

I just want to say, I saw your recent video about how you have 80 people working at LTT now, and having watched since there were was like 10-14 of you? I’m so damn happy and proud of my fellow Canadian techies! But also, it shows! The writing and production quality of your videos is so so high! I loved the red background with the blue banana and the ‘redblueredblue’ going across the screen! So many little details that just make this (and all your videos) look SO professional! Good job team!
As others have said the new variety of productivity benchmarks is great but as a mechanical engineering student, it would be nice to see benchmarks for CADing softwares too. I'm sure it would be useful for ltt engineers as well. :)
May as well have them run FEA benchmarks too lol
Yes I complete agree with this! I wanna see Ansys fea simulations lol
Well, as CAD Software is mostly single threaded you should look mainly at the single core performance
I second, also a Mechanical engineering student
You should be using gpu acceleration on CAD.
I think this is just a simple case of early adopters paying the price. As more affordable motherboards come out, more DDR5 RAM is available, and sales start happening, it will all make more sense from a financial standpoint. There's no doubt the performance is impressive. Now give us the Zen 4 3D chips!
Normally I would agree, but new gens are usually associated with significant performance improvements. The improvements with these chips don't seem to be gamer oriented. So, adoption will be much slower, and therefore the rate the price comes down will be tantalizingly slow.
I don't think the case of the 5800X3D early adopters is a rushed type of decision those buyers made
@@marcfruchtman9473 Actually, that would hasten the prices lowering. If there's not a high demand, they'll have to lower prices to get people to buy them. The initial Zen 4 chips were primarily designed for servers and laptops (hence the iGPU), and enough gamning performance to compete. The V-Cache models are the ones to get ifyou want next gen. Current prices are for early adopters only. Once that crowd gets their fill, prices will go down. Most gamers will likely just stick wtih a 5800x3d and DDR4 if they're building now, or one of the cheaper intel chips. Next year will be when gamers start adopting AM5 when the V cache chips come out.
@@agentooe33AD I would like to think that. But lately, I am seeing companies simply "holding out"... and waiting for the public to simply adapt to the higher prices. So, I don't have a lot of hope that things will improve.
@@agentooe33AD or they'll just simply make less product, price only goes down if they have overstock, and once it's in a retailer's hands, amd's already got their check, regardless of what kind of sales the retailer has to pull to get rid of it
Would it be possible to organize your bar graphs by the type of test rather than processor? It might give an easier to understand side by side comparison as the graphs don't stay on screen that long.
Loving the info here, although I wish you'd have included the 5800X3D in the various sets of benchmarks... I have a 5900X and was thinking the 5800X3D might be a more reasonable upgrade than the 7000 series, since I could retain all my existing hardware. What are your thoughts?
I did this but I play mmo's. GW2, BDO and wow all 30+fps gains over my 5900x.
@@Kevin-gf4im To be fair the 5900/5950 weren't supposed to be the gaming chips. People just tried to make them into that. The 5800X was the sweet spot because all the cores and cache were a single chip instead of the chiplet design where everything works until whatever is in cache gets split or the workload ends up split between the two chiplets which hurts performance. That's why they added the 3D cache to the 5800 and not the 5900/5950 in the first place. It was in the best place to take advantage of that performance uplift. Considering the benchmarks I'd say AMD hit that one square on the head...almost too well.
Cant wait for this to be available at my region in 3 yrs

keep in mind, the 5800x3d is more of a gaming oriented CPU. notice how it didn't show up on any of the productivity benchmarks here?
the 7000 series are still really capable chips for both gaming/productivity, but the 5800x3d is mainly just good for gaming. (not that it's bad)

What does it matter when GPUs are using over 400 watts?
I'm still on gen 1 ryzen, it'll be fun to see what kinds of performance gains I can get and for what prices when I choose to upgrade. AMD has already stated that there will be 3D cache versions of Zen 4. I'm guessing they'll be released after Intel 13000 series drops. It will allow AMD to see significant increases without having to change anything else and still compete with the new Intel chips.
@Steve Sherman bro what are you talking about late, they weren’t allowed to release a review until today. They would get sued. Second of all, just because amd didn’t quite live up to the hype doesn’t mean that the review was biased.
That sounds like a good plan. Let’s cross fingers, because we shall not deny any uplifts in performance. Only when the price goes to insanity as well.
@@wandew7057 Look at his other comments on the channel, absolutely a troll.
Does anyone know if 3d v cache would technically be compatible with more powerful apus? I'm waiting for the 7th gen apus with rdna3 before upgrading so I can assign the integrated graphics to a VM
Intel 13th gen is coming in 1-2 months. 3D V-cache versions of Zen 4 probably won't be released until ~6 months from now, at which point they'll be close to cutting in on their own launch for next year. It's a bit of a weird strategy.
I know that you will read that, Linus ;) From labs I would've expected to see the power draw comparison vs similarly configured Intel system. Maybe simulate 1hr of gaming with the exact same inputs and also maybe a 1hr encoding or rendering job and measure the whole system power draw. Use the same power supply, AIO cooler that has adapters for both intel and AMD, graphics card and RAM and similar mid-range motherboard from the same manufacturer. That would be interesting. Does AMD boost high with high power draw, but being fast, for a very short period, so that the overall power draw is actually less? Taking into account also the needed extra cooling performance, it would be very interesting, measuring the cooling power draw, the CPU power draw and the overall power draw from the wall. You could make it more interesting via making LTT staff bet on which one comes on top in horse race betting style.
i was planning a build to replace my HP pre-"build" and wanted to use the ryzen 7 7700x but now im left wondering what cpu i should use for that price range
It would have been nice if the 5800x3d was added in the productivity charts. The gaming numbers were impressive enough to take a second look before upgrading from 5000 series to 7000 series.
Seconded
The extra cache doesn't benefit productivity software as much (if at all) as it does games, hence why the 5800X3D was touted as the CPU for gamers. In some cases it performs worse than the 5800X due to the lower clock speed.
@@karehaqt Hence why I am going for a 5800x instead of 3D, main priority is work, I can live without those extra frames
in productivity, even the 5800X (non 3D) is better, and for the same price you can get a 5900X
Yes put the 5800X3D running Linux where it consistently outperforms the rest of Zen 3 CPUs in many professional apps.

That moment of an experiment of X3D working too well that it becomes the expectation and benchmark new chips needs to actually beat.... AMD should never stop being AMD with all those innovations

@@riel0563 That's a good price.
This seems to be a pattern with AMD, just like with threadripper and EPYC, they're their own biggest competition. You love to see that type of thing, shit like that moves the entire industry forward by putting competitors feet to the fire. Now you've got an Intel that's hungry and actually trying to top the charts. We all win in these exchanges.
@@riel0563 Definitely not, AMD is going to CRUSH Intel in gaming performance and will probably demand a price premium. Although Intel will likely slash their prices to under cut AMD. Probably will do a similar strategy to last year, cut all CPU prices then release the X3D chips at around the same for slightly higher than previous MSRP.
Haven’t finished the video yet but. Isn’t this just yet another testament to the badassery of 3d v-cache???
Cannot wait to see results of their first ones on this generation!
Same. Everything they've said about V-cache to date has been along the lines of, "Yeah, the 5800X3D was a beta test. Just wait for next gen. 😎"
I'm sure u finished the video by now, but yes 3D vcache is dope. But my biggest takeaway was the MASSIVE improvement in minimums. That's a very black and white form of progress imo because there is no * for clarity or 'technically correct' when your minimum gains are off the chart.
@@MrYodaBomb Id love to see the charts with only minimum FPS on. It is ultimately, the core experience for gaming.
Honestly, the fact they aren't releasing a CPU with V-Cache with these others may be the difference that keeps me with Intel - coming from a 10 year old i7-3970X.
The numbers are getting crazier, but I am mostly impressed with the inclusion of integrated graphics.
I think at this point, all CPUs should have it, regardless if it's from Intel, AMD, or even Apple. Really helpful when your graphics card suddenly becomes dysfunctional or just dies and you can't buy a new one right away.
Literally just went through this and luckily my 9900k had integrated graphics on it. My 3090 fan fell off and completely went out on me. Gen 3 pentium integrated graphics run most indie games at 60fps
Thanks for the architectural changes comparison! 👌 Watched a few reviews and LTT is the only place that mentioned Zen 4 having doubled L2 cache, 1M instead 0.5M per core on Zen 3. That's a big contributor to the generational improvement.

Integrated graphics would’ve saved me a lot of time troubleshooting when my gtx 1080 just decided to die.
Exactly. And DDR5 is super usefull for that. I currently run looking glas with a rx 560 and a gtx 760 and a r7 5800x. (i am in the middle of setting it up). A r7 7700x would be perfect since it ahs the beef to power a vm + host and ddr5 enables fast enough vram so you are not limited in resolution or framrate when it comes to your vm. Because i heared igpu's because of it's ram based vram are limited in performance but ddr5 could bring a big boost. Have you looked into the "extra-thick" lid heat transfer problem? Apparently direct cooling and lid shaving are the way to get high 'all core' speeds reliably..
Currently use Ansys day-to-day for CAE/simulation work, which apparently benefits significantly from AVX-512 in terms of Mechanical. Looking forwards to the gaming focused 7800X 3D and 7600X 3D reviews, I have a feeling they'll be held until after Intel announces 13th gen though so AMD can decide on how to price them.

I wonder why the heck AMD doing, they done very good at LGA model in Threadripper or Epyc.
The bent pins on CPU thing was always ridiculous to me as they were much stronger then Intels mobo pins which ANY placement of CPU at an angle or off center meant pins could be damaged on a mobo that are a lot harder to straighten as they don't stick straight up but a weird angle that means they could be bent in complex ways VS a straight pin.
I can't wait for the 3d v-cache and I hope they put the cache on more than just the 8 core models this time.
I would love to see a gradient of benchmarks from 8th or 9th gen Intel to current gen or 13th gen. I am sporting a 9900k and I am starting to feel it struggle on applications like Photoshop, Lightroom, DNG Converter, and Premier. I see a lot of comparison of the new stuff with last gen, but I imagine most people are going be coming off of older gen CPUs and wondering, what will be the best value for their workflow in the next gen of Intel or AMD. Video comparisons I have seen have mostly been game related, and the FPS improvements, while better, were nothing that made me think I need to run out and get a 12900k over my 9900k. But an array of benchmarks across multiple work domains would be more useful.
I have an Intel 8700k and I feel like it's time to upgrade, just dont have any money to upgrade to anything to atm. xD
@@ScrewFearMe i got you bro
@@ScrewFearMe That's kind of the big problem. Linus didn't really cover it well, but the power rate per kwh has been trending upward all across North America, with some places (like parts of California) being nuts. If you use your computer for many hours per day, that 150 watt difference between AMD and Intel adds up to thousands of dollars over the life of the computer. (Unless you get free power. But then someone else is paying it.) Thousands of dollars is a lot of parts upgrades. Most of my friends that went Intel are sporting upper midrange chips, while most of my friends that went AMD just opted for the highest tier, often with GPUs a notch higher too - and still save money over time due to that lower power consumption. It's way easier to collect the money to upgrade if you're not flushing tons more away on your power bill.
Was on the fence about the 5800X3D then heard about all the announcements, hoping AMD would show off the next generation X3D, kind of disappointed but now I will get to wait and see what Intel brings to the table and see AMD's 3D chips as well. Why would you do that? Wait 8 months and get the 7800x3d for gaming. Itll blow every game out of the water
I want to see a video on how different DDR5 speed effects performance now. Been hearing 6000 MHz is the sweet spot but does that mean it’s pointless to get faster ram?
for games there is at least no difference between 6000 and 6400. and everything beyond is way too expensive for only measurable gain
Also higher speeds only increase the memory bandwidth, not the latency. And that bandwidth is not very useful in games, which fully use only a few of the cores.
ram speeds aren't really impactful on everyday life. it's one aspect you really shouldn't focus on too much. The price difference in speeds does not equate to the same difference in performance.
I don't know. Steve at Hardware Unboxed found a 7% uplift in performance from using 6400. I think it may depend on your chip.
Hardware Unboxed dove in to that in their video today, have a look there
By the time I see these upgrades, the prices will come down to where AM4 are now. I'll be sticking with my 5800X for now.
I got the same chip, idk why anyone would hop over that fast.
My I7 2600K lasted 9 years, I'm sure the 5800X will do fine for at least 8 years with gaming.
And quite honestly, If it did come to upgrading. the 5800X3D would be a better upgrade from say a 5600x(In my rig) value wise than swapping to Zen 4, buying new Mobo and RAM AND the CPU itself.
CPU's are very long lasting parts. I've never owned one for shorter than 5 years and I've never had a single issue in anything I needed to do with it. Buying a good CPU once every 5 or even 6 years is the way to go.

At the one hand, yes, you can upgrade a b350 with ryzen 5800x3d for amazing gaming performance.
But if you're like me and build a pc at the start of ryzen you probably still use the same gpu as back then. got a r5 1600 and a 1070ti. Why didn't you all talk about ECO mode? I saw some stats on it and it's VERY impressive. Dropping down to 105W TDP which drops power consumption by a substantial amount but performance barely drops??

14:00 what do you mean rush to bring out a refresh like zen3d? zen4d was listed on AMD's roadmap along with zen5D
Could these numbers improve with bios updates and driver updates as the product ages?
If you’re a sim, RTS, or VR gamer, the X3D is simply better. Simulations and high unit counts are cache-limited. VR has to reuse data for each frame pair. Cache is life for those. It also helps minimum FPS and stuttering immensely.
