Is buying a PS5 or Xbox really a better bang for your buck? Or, with a little creativity, can you build a gaming PC for the same price, and put shame to the Sony name?

Linus just skyrocketed the price of all these parts…
Rip
there's way too many 5600X cpus to skyrocket their prices and as for the intel GPU, noone should buy there first gen things unless they wanna have problems, so doubt it will significantly impact anything
i been wondering when they'd do a video on this hahah, rip prices/stock
at least it's not as bad as when the toastybros make a video about a budget ebay build and the parts are sold out or gouged immediately
@@aquss33you can also pick any other 5xxx cpu without significant change in the budget
An AMD CPU with an intel GPU, the most unholiest thing in existence today!
It's like the inverse of 2012 when the meta was a Sandy Bridge i7 with a Radeon HD 7970.
That's my PC
My new build will be Intel CPU and AMD GPU!
I am going to do it.
...dogs and cats, living together!!! - Peter Venkman
8:35 how are us regular people supposed to know stufflike this. That one thing made such a huge difference
You know Intel are bad since 4 years... If he took the RX 6600XT that I can found at $130, it kill the PS5...
what even is allthat? can anyone explain?
@@arx48 AFAIK those are software/driver features that you should enable in the BIOS.
it's a BIOS, not CIA software. Enable 2 things and you're done.
YOU aren't supposed to know stuff like that. YOU are supposed to buy a Playstation. boom, problem solved.
I really like you linus! Been watching since you just started and now everytime i come across your vids, your face makes me feel nostalgic. Much love ❤
Showing 20fps gameplay was a really nice way of reminding people to turn on ReBAR.
You’re not my dad!
@@iambroda2257can confirm Im his father
If your CPU supports it that is.
Unless you don't know what your doing like most people. I remember in the old days I was scared to even load by bios because I was worried I would break the computer.
Most people see gibberish they don't understand in the bios.
Using ARC was an extreme oversight and terrible idea for a video trying to show people PC is a better alternative to console. Will you sometimes run into the crashing/issues shown in this video? Yes on rare occasion, not every game you try playing like in this video.
Steam Deck OLED made me realize just how shockingly important HDR is for gaming. It's a dramatically better looking image when enabled for no fps cost. Windows/developers and everyone on PC really needs to focus on getting it supported better
@willwunsche6940 To be fair to windows and game devs, hdr standards and implementations on tvs and monitors are a mess. A lot of them are theoretically hdr capable, but not in a way anyone would want to use.
That’s the thing with HDR, you can’t be sold it with words, you have to own it for a bit and then try to switch back to SDR. Games with realistic graphics look like over saturated cartoons in SDR mode.
It's just better colors ofc it won't cost you fps lol
So basically your saying everyone should be rich and able to afford an hdr monitor? Thats silly, plus i would take higher referesh rate or more resolution over hdr any day
@fromdiscord Yeah, they should set their priorities straight and get that real HDR OLED monitor. So developers will support it in more games. Eat dry bread for a year, sell your GF, sister or bumhole behind a dumpster if necessary. Just do whatever it takes and get that shiny HDR screen! By the way, these monitors have high res and refreshrates by default.
I feel that with the upscaling comparison, say with the beard, that can come down to the sharpness filter more than anything, and thats adjustable.
A large benefit to a building a PC is that when parts do need to be replaced it is much easier to just swap out specific parts. Whereas with a console they limit a lot of what you can do to improve it. Making you have to buy a whole new system.
Yeah but the PS5 will last more before you have to change it and you will end up paying more for the pc
@spongy179 if you buy solid parts a PC will last a long time and I have nothing against consoles I still have an N64 but a PC build will look and play better than any console and the PC has the benefit of using software like steam to purchase at least x100 more games that will never come to console.
@@andreww2925 solid or not, those parts need to be changed, not bc theu break but bc they will get slow after time
@spongy179 so being realistic if you bought a 4080 GPU and a 13900k cpu that will last a minimum of 6-7+ years before any performance drop is noticeable along with that you can then over clock and get a few more years. A console, especially one built today is using already old hardware.
@@andreww2925 PC will last a long time if you don't use it. unless all your doing is excel and youtube. consoles are designed just to run games 24/7. the engineering is superior at every level, including software. it's easy to build a better PC than a console. it just will never be superior. not anymore.
the thing about console vs PC is at the end of the day you also have a PC, that's worth it in my book
That's true, I am personally considering whether to buy a console or a PC. I have and always need a Laptop, so I am kind of swinging PS5 to replace my PS4. However the PS3 just broke down so emulation would be nice... Ah it's to difficult of a choice
Also, you make the money back with paying 50% less for games.
@@thebestdamager7400 lol what? these days console games are cheaper 90% of the time.
@TheGoldenMan99 PS3 emulation works on PC!
@@TheGoldenMan99I heard a rumor that PS5 has PS3 emulation. It might be worth looking into seeing if that rumor is true because that could be the tiebreaker
You can't ignore the shipping if you are going to talk eBay. Shipping fee's cancel out most deals on eBay, especially shipping to Canada.
depends, I buy servers all the time and sometimes you will get a system at the same price but with free shipping from more reputable sellers. also free shipping is relatively common on ebay, even to canada.
You can literally search local and there's a check box for free shipping, good deals come up with effort
try qatar i cant get nothing here
Try shipping to south Africa. It's insane
Also can't ignore you can also buy a used PS5 and save.
Shouldn’t the budget actually be the equivalent of a digital only ps5 on eBay for a fair comparison?
Yep and with a $70 controller
Of course.
This made me feel better about my PSU purchase back in January. I got the Seasonic FOCUS GX-850, 80+ Gold. My previous 2 year old Cooler Master 750W failed embarrassingly bad. I had to temporarily use my 11 year old EVGA PSU just to regain use of my computer. I couldn't really game because it didn't have enough juice for my modern hardware.
I love how Linus called the 6700xt and 3060ti 'boring' and then proceeded to show us all what makes those boring cards so useful, namely not having to fuck around with driver support and HDR implimentations, etc.
No hate on the A770, it's a cool card, but boring has its advantages sometimes.
Iirc the a750 is usually cheaper than the 6600xt and has better performance plus better upscaling tech w XeSS, driver jank aside
@@mcslender2965 Here, in Australia that is, you can pickup a 6600 for $50 cheaper then the A750. Which is only slightly less powerful then the A750. Up to the person in question of course, if you're a tinker then the A750 is a great card. But if you don't want to deal with its teething issues then the 6000 series is the way to go.
Value for money is great, but the equation is not purely about performance, it's also about the experience with the card. Atleast that's my opinion!
I think it was just a "I'm tired of team red/green" thing, and prolly just wanted to mix it up while also seeing if Intel drivers have changed the card for the better.
@@Alphawolf2325 Probably, I don't think so though. Still the point stands, either would have been a better pic for an entry level build. As the person most likely using an entry level build isn't going to be someone tech savy enough to troubleshoot that kinda card.
In the US at least, the Arc A770 is cheaper than the 6700 XT (even if you go used) which matters a lot in a budget like this, but moreover I think the idea was to match (really beat) the 16gb of combined memory of the console, and the A770 is the only 16gb card cheap enough for this budget.
It's more like a trend to build a PS5 killer. But I gotta say, for $500, you can build a pretty solid gaming PC right now, *without counting peripherals.
tbh I never understood what the fuzz was about.
I always saw consoles as highly limited product.
Sure, you'll see you occasional post that claims that "there's no point in having a PC if a console costs less" (mainly from console only players either way) - but exchanging capabilities of modding, better user experience, more games available and no subscription cost for just wanting to play online and talking on a slow peer 2 peer voice chat at basically no additional cost for the manufacturer isn't exactly something that sounds too great to me.
If I ever would want a console again I'd just straight up let my PC start with Steam in Big Picture mode, hook it up to my TV and have a wireless keyboard & mouse for modding stuff and adding non-steam games to the steam library. Doesn't even matter if a PC costs 400 more.
@@Unknown_GeniusConsoles are more about a seamless experience. Things are all plug-and-play and you never really have to deal with drivers and such, and not everyone has the time or is willing to invest in this process. That's of course without considering platform exclusives.
might as well buy a used ps5. that would be way way cheaper.
Hell, local stores are selling disc consoles for 450€, it's even cheaper than this.
@@hayden.A0 Yep. The idea is more about the ecosystem/exclusivity. And of course the simplicity of it all.
So there comparing to the disc version? Which means they are $75 over the price of the digital version?
well yea considering so many games on my ps5 are over 100gb i regret not getting the disc version
Valid point. The digital edition is just as powerful and cheaper. It’s the one I’ve got. I haven’t regretted even a minute. The amount of gaming I’ve gotten from such a small price is 100% worth it
Now go buy a new AAA game for cheap on the digtial model.. you can't.
That's why you always go disc version, you can buy an AAA game new and sell it for 50% of what you gave some time later, or just buy it used for 50% less, reducing the total loss by a significant amount.
Imagine what you could have saved up, if you didn't have all these unsellable digital games..
I
@@R-py6uf Agreed. Playstation Store prices are crazy. Even though they often have a sale, the games are still really expensive. Also if you own physical, you can still install the games way later when the services are offline, or when you have no Internet.
Plus they are comparing the PC comprised of all used parts to the price of a brand new PS5.
The most important part of any PC build is a dependable power supply! I built and repaired PC's for over 20 years (15 at a custom build company) and the biggest issue I experienced were supply issues.
If you're buying used PC parts, you should also compare it to a used PS5. So around $330.
I never even thought of that. But yeah, you kinda have to if you’re going down that route with PC.
Then you should also include the the PSN or PS plus or whatever that you need to play online Multiplayer (and the ability to do this is also required for some offline single player games) Edit: Ignore what I wrote in the parenthesis, I got this wrong.
@@janoschk.5730there is not one single player game on PS5 that requires PS Plus to play or access it. not one.
@@alanamarko OK sorry, I looked it up and you are totally right
@janoschk.5730 You also don't need ps+ for free to play games. so basically the biggest online games are 100% free anyway.
Basically, the ps5 killer is not a ps5 killer.
Ltt has done this for a long time now. Every time they make a "console killer" it's weaker or cost way more than a console or they cheat and go "oh well you had these 3 parts lying around still" my favorite is the constantly using free or discounted versions of windows. Iirc their ps4 "killers" assumes windows was $10. Lol.
@usrevenge I agree with all your points aside from the windows price. You can get Windows keys for extremely cheap. So long as you don't buy from Microsoft themselves lol. I have never spent more than $15 on a windows key for the builds I sell

Totally the same! Except cheating on costs, build know how, technical know how, the number of things that go wrong, constant updates for different parts, games not being tailored to maximize your specific build.
Yeah, totally comparable. Exactly what i expect from hardcore PC users.
LMAO 😂 true
WIFI, bluetooth, noise, simplicity, worry-free updates, portability, plug-and-play-ability. All things that this PC doesn't have, PC's can't have or you have to spend much more to get... before you come at me, I own a very high-end PC and bought a PS5 after and it still makes me giggle how simple it is.
It’s official. Bearded Linus has caught up to the main timeline.
Linus tech 😊
I can't accept this beardless Linus. Just looks wrong.
bring back beard
Problem with such videos this 500$ PC turns into 1000€ in other countries, while PS5 remains 500€.
I loved bearded Linus more. Facial hair fits him perfect
The biggest reason I would take a $500 PC over a console even if the PC parts are used is that a PC is more then a gaming box. There are so many more uses for a pc then a console. Even if you currently don't do anything but gaming the option with the pc is always there, which in my opinion adds huge value to a PC.
Right? Like how you can make those ps5 games on that PC :)
If someone wants to game for an hour after work and doesn’t need/ want a PC and they don’t want to deal with all the additional hassle of a PC, updates, drivers not playing nice with each other, can’t just pick up where you left off, possibly having to drape wires across a living room, etc. The convenience factor is a huge contributor to why consoles are a better fit for a lot of people.
@@dwane42 what decade are you living in? This isn't 2004 when loading up windows takes 5 min and PC's don't have wireless cards... What cables do you need that consoles don't?? And drivers are generally just managed by windows and if you HAVE to do updates for graphics it's like once every 3-6 months.... Meanwhile I turn my Xbox on and I can't do anything till it takes 5 min to update.
@@dwane42None of those problems exists on PCs anymore than it does on consoles. Not sure what kind of hassle a PC gives you when it boots up in 15 seconds and ready to go? Drivers issues basically don't exists anymore. Why wouldn't you be able to pick up where you left off, its the same game? Wireless peripherals has been more popular than wired ones for years now on PCs.
Unless you like watching Netflix or something. PC sucks for that and console is the second best option to an Apple TV 😂
I'll state a few missed yet obvious points though. 1- Its 475$ vs 320$ if we being fair about going 2nd hand. 2- A PC is not limited to PS5 games. While a PS5 may have a few exclusives, there are hundreds if not thousands of games playable on PC but not on a PS5... 3- A PC is not ONLY a gaming machine. You won't be editing photos from your last trip on a PS5.
Last point is important why? Because if you need to buy, upgrade and maintain a PC alongside your PS5 anyway, it may only need marginally better components to match the performance of PS5.
Always interesting to compare a desktop to a console. I'd add that most people already own a PC or laptop so spending your console budget to upgrade or buy a higher tier machine seems (at least for me) the better choice.
This video exemplifies perfectly why people would prefer consoles over PC
you have to haggle through buying components, some components were assumed you already have, you have to deal with bios, software sentings, game settings, let alone the HUGE footprint all in order to try to match what you can just go to a store, pick up and play.
Right. Not to mention we’re talking about used parts from ebay with shipping fees vs brand new ps5. I can find a ps5 right now for 300€-350€ from my local marketplace. No chance of building a pc that cheap coming even close to the power of ps5.
Right but the bargain hunting and researching/picking all the components is half the fun of owning a PC! I get that it's not for everyone, but for people like me there's a certain satisfaction you get from building it yourself that console gaming can never provide. With my current build I spent an entire week getting my fan curves *just* right, and I enjoyed every second of it, even moreso than actually gaming on the thing. With a console you just plug it in and go. *BORING!* It's like going to a mechanic instead of working on your own car. Where's the fun in that?
@@Psythik Most people just want to drive their car to get to places and boot up their console just to game. I am PC gang forever but the ease of booting up a console and getting into a game is undeniable. If I were on a low budget I'd pick console 10/10 times.
@@trippinhard250 And I get that 💯 but thankfully for those of use who want to do more than just drive and play games have the option to do so. It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?

Would be nice to show a similar pc-build with brand new parts only, since a ps5 for ~$500-550 is brand new with warranty (like you mentioned).
That way we could also get a comparison in terms of price.
A friend of mine bought a used but 100% running ps5 digital for $320 a few month ago 🙂
Guess you are gonna just imagine the game running, since you need to sped double that on a half decent TV to make the experience even halfway comparable to a similar spec PC... making your argument completely irrelevant.
Completly?
Used workstation $400-500. GPU is the problem. Parts are always inflated. Anything mass produced like a gaming console is going to cost the company behind it a fraction compared to trying to buy off the shelf parts. Plus they don't make money off the consoles their business model is pay to play. It's obviously more expensive to PLAY on a console but it's cheaper upfront.
@@justahyundai Or you could just play with PC OR Console on a normal screen...

I love how they also conveniently forgot to mention perhaps the biggest flex for PC over console: it's also a whole ass PC. Better web browsing experience, endless applications, including tons of use cases for work, school, and home. The fact you can get basically-equivalent gaming PLUS an actual usable windows PC in the same package for roughly the same price is insane
I'll always believe that consoles 100% have their place in the world and sometimes their convenience and ease of use just can't be beat - but having fully committed to the switch from console to PC gaming before the last-gen consoles I can honestly say I really haven't looked back once. My kids still use the console, but I literally can't remember the last time I turned it on
Yea and they also “forgot” to mention that a used ps5 would be 350, and why start with a $500 disk version. The pc has no blu ray drive
@@djnes2k7 PC also doesn't need a drive ever, on console you need to buy used to get close to the discounts on PC
They also forget to mention the biggest downside for PC: there's a lot of shitty ass ports that are probably never getting fixed, usually with non stop Shader Compilation Stutter and excessive VRAM requirements (especially PS5 ports weirdly enough lol). Also, Microsoft should wake the fuck up and make Windows an option on a Xbox console.
Why do so many people keep trying to bring this up?
It’s literally irrelevant. Most people are using a basic laptop or desktop for most work and school things. Bringing this up is a very skewed case.
@@Herola279 heck, most people are doing this things on their phones nowadays. I couldn't believe a dude my age didn't have any idea how to use a computer and did all his college works on his phone.
This heavily assumes you're buying from a US market. For pretty much every other part of the world, a used Arc A770 is about 300 USD, or two thirds of a PS5 at MSRP (500 USD)
Ive always factored in the added versatility of a pc when comparing vs a console. For me being able to use a pc for more then gaming has inherent value that say id need a laptop for alongside a console. Usually that 3/400 extra will take pc to a different level over console.
I've used parts off ebay for over 10 years now and I love it. I currently have a "last gen" PC (if you want to call a 3070 last gen) I'm using for around $600 all in. You can buy parts and sell the old ones to almost break even. I generally upgrade something about every 4-5 months. The only thing I never buy or sell are SSDs.

tbh after switching in 2020-ish from a ps4 to pc, i think it would be pretty unfair if a pc costed around the same price as a console😭i've been able to do so much on my pc. a console is great for gaming but i just can't imagine going back to console anymore bc my pc introduced me to so many more things despite initially only buying one for gaming
But most people probably have a laptop, the utility of a laptop is so much greater than a desktop PC. So a console would be a good choice
@@sjneow Most people I know will have a laptop for work but I don't really know anyone with a personal laptop. It's all tablets or mobile phones now.

PS5 is 4 years old though. Not a fair comparison in price
@@sjneow even then, when buying a laptop nowadays, buying one with gaming capability is still pretty expensive; especially if you try to match performance to a desktop, as it'll end up being more expensive. plus both have their drawbacks: laptops have difficulty with cooling, are less customizable, and usually have a TDP limit; desktops are usually not portable and tend to be less efficient with power draw
i actually have an rtx 4060 laptop, and it's really convenient as a student. i'm not trying to put down consoles-i even said they're great for gaming. low price, convenience, etc. it's just that as a device, individually, computers (including laptops as well) offer much more past gaming, and obviously at a higher price than consoles
if you can get away with a regular cheaper laptop for work to combo with a console, then knock yourself out. the biggest flex with these things is usually spending less💯

Interesting video. There are definitely flaws though.
1, current used prices of the ps5 is not 500.
2, some value time. The time needed to hunt every part and then build it is, I would imagine, not insignificant.
3, risk. so many different used parts from different sellers. decent chance something is faulty, glitchy, or even broken (yes, yes, returns, still annoying)
4, as pointed out before doom, pcs sometimes need tweaking and have issues, compatibility problems, other errors (like before RnC).
You do briefly mention these things at the end, but I think it’s important to note those can be bigger issues for some people, myself included.
I’ve built many PCs, with a $3,000 overkill pogger wogger gaming PC sitting in my office. I STILL have stupid ass windows errors and things that just randomly break in the OS, and I’m just tired of troubleshooting. I have to imagine it’s even worse on… that.
I’m so damn happy to just sit on my couch, pick up a controller from my charging dock, and shit just works. Obviously, console gaming, over a long period can be more expensive than even a higher end PC with the online services being almost mandatory, but also you get a massive amount of free games with PS Plus at least, and good ones too (imo).
anyway, I spent way too long on a comment I feel like I’ll just get shit on for. I just see and appreciate the console for what it is. A user friendly, convenient, mostly error-free gaming machine. No more or less. PCs can do a lot, so I use mine for work, and my PS5 for gaming.

Granted you seem to fancy playstation more but the point is everyones milage varies Ive been on PC since 2020 never gotten any windows error messages can sit back on my couch and use my controller or use my KBM on literally any game I want point of this comment is for many PC is easily a great console replacement that "just works"
Like others have said, your opinion here, while valid, is also subjective. I was a HUGE console gamer up to and including the Xbox 360, but I honestly switched due to something like they weren't going to allow backward compatibility or something and then later rolled back on that decision. I don't remember if that is accurate, I just remember thinking that I don't have this hassle when I want to play my pc games and didn't bother picking up another console. Most of my friends followed suit, which did make the whole thing easier as well.
Some counterpoints to consider:
- Computers will last through multiple console generations (assuming you aren't someone who NEEDS the ultra top of the line gigachad graphics at all times)
- Once you have a good computer it isn't nearly as expensive to upgrade certain parts in the future
- The peripherals work perfectly from one upgrade to the next (consoles are starting to get better with this)
- The Vast majority of the time pc gamers have the same gaming experience. Outside of launch day issues, I rarely, if ever am troubleshooting issues with a game. This is also the same experience with all of my friends. This was definitely an argument that used to be relevant, but we are in a significantly better place than we were even 10-15 years ago.
A few other thoughts, for me personally, it is much much more expensive to get setup on a console than just forking out even $1000 upgrading my computer. After I factor in the console, the $100 controllers x 3 and the online subscription fee, I am already almost there and I don't even have any games to play. Buy a half-dozen games and I'm well above that $1000 mark and still don't have access to the hundreds upon hundreds of games I have access to on my pc. And none of that factors in all of the other things I can and do use my pc for.
Please don't also misconstrue any of this as bashing consoles, that is definitely not my intention. Some of my best gaming memories were crowded around the couch playing Halo with my friends. I just want to show how for some people, especially those of us who only have the budget for one or the other, it's not as clear cut as many say.

The convenience of console gaming is undisputed. I would take a compromise on some performance as a trade for simplicity and ease of use any day. The older I get, the more my time is limited and I really appreciate spending more time gaming, and less time building/tweaking/troubleshooting. You can tell that gaming is not my main hobby.
That being said, PC is undeniably the premium experience when you have the time/money.

1. Most new games on consoles.
2. Indie games on PC.
3. Older games on PC.
4. Games where the player base is tied to a particular machine on that particular machine.
I do like the treating of the ARC GPUs as the cost-competitive option they are instead of ignoring them like most tech youtubers. if i were building the same MID RANGE gaming pc today on an AM5 socket and ddr5 ram i would be looking at a final cost of closer to $3k.
Consoles kept their value proposition not because how great the consoles are (which they are either way!), but because the PC hardware prices went through the roof in the meantime. A PC in the same performance class 5 years ago with brand new hardware would have been at roughly $400.
CPU: Ryzen 5 1600AF: ~$90
GPU: Radeon RX 580 8GB: ~$150 at the time
MOBO: $60
16GB RAM: $80
PSU: $60
Case: $40 (not included in the video)
I also think Linus made this video just a bit too early. Prices are starting to go down almost across the board, so in just a couple months time it could have been that he'd been able to do this at a better price point (as in, case and/or controller included for the $500) or with somewhat better hardware.
Idk if building used PCs is becoming really popular right now because I used to consider $50 total for a used motherboard to be a little bit dear, but now you can't even find an A520 or B450 AM4 motherboard on eBay for less than $60 - $70 including shipping. That's not to mention if you buy a previous generation AM4 board that you might need to flash the BIOS to install 3000 and 5000 series Ryzen (if they are compatible). The same with cases in that you can't seem to get a used one for less than $50 and a new one will probably cost you $70 and up. So, even with the best prices listed I've come across, you will already be $140 into your '$500" hypothetical budget leaving $360 for everything else. $60 for a PSU, $70 for a Ryzen 5 3600X, and about $230 for a used RX 6700 and you'll be lucky to have something close to the PS5 performance. Oh, and I didn't even factor in storage, so hopefully you have a spare hard drive and RAM to put in it.

This leaves out important aspects of the comparison... 1. You can get a PS5 for $400 without the disc drive, which your PC build also lacks. 2. Adding a 4K Blu-Ray drive to the PC drives the price up over $600. 3. There's a PS5 Pro launching in November that is rumored to be at the same price range, but near double the performance (at least in TFLOPs). 4. No 3D audio processing in the PC games either. 5. As you mentioned, no controller, and the controller lacks haptic feedback and a speaker/mic built in.

@@CyberNut930that’s a dangerous mentality tbh just like how me and bunch of people just lost a bunch of media from ps store I just canceled my game pass on pc as well I’m not supporting the banning of ownership
@@Evilfonics the problem with disks for consoles and PC is... frankly? the gaming and hard-work/real-work program creators of the PC and console industries themselves.
gamers and PC owners did NOT want disks to become obsolete. hard copies of ANY durable and reusable data is preferrable to clouds or even SSD drives... let alone external/support MDD. of which i have had TWO fail utterly and entirely in my lifetime owning PCs since the 1990's. yep, both EXT HD i've ever purchased failed on me within 3 years of owning each. i lost every bit of data on those two drives i didn't have backed up on personal CDs and DVDs.
in the past, owning a physical copy of a game or program on disk gave you quite a 'chokehold' on program purchasing for both sides of the industry (play and work). why buy an upgraded 'work' program if the old one on-disk worked just fine? if your PC had a problem, just uninstall the 'broken' program and reinstall it for free off your disk.
then there were the piracy issues. some were fake news drummed up by Public Relations campaigns by the work and play program creation companies themselves. others were real issues. VHS tapes got copied. cassette tapes for music got copied. CDs for music get ripped/burned by owners all the time. movie DVDs and BR disks get cracked and uploaded online even today. lots n lots of pirated media are sold n traded or free either digitally online or physical disks sold worldwide.
so, both sides of the fence decided to try and install or buy 'read/write protection' for their CDs and DVDs... which often failed or required the end users to BUY access to a game/work item they already purchased from the original supplier. then there are the ownership rights and licensing rights for those physical disks as well. finally, both industries said, 'we are moving to digital downloaded programs!' it is much easier to write code in for: anti-copy, one machine only, piracy prevention measures INTO a bunch of files you DL onto your 'device'.
i myself wrote multiple emails to Ubisoft asking them to stop digital-only copies of their PC games. because, until last year... when my internet supplier discontinued the service... i was on DSL. now i'm on fiber... but on DSL? my PC took FOUR DAYS to download Assassin's Creed: Odyssey... and that was JUST the main game, no DLC, no 'day one patches'... none of that content... FOUR DAYS to DL one game, and my internet on that one device... entirely useless... that one game took up my entire bandwidth... my cellphone on my home Wi-Fi was nearly useless for those four days.
since Odyssey... even on fiber... i haven't bought a single new PC game yet. i want to... but my old PC with specs that would play a game well? died in 2020. so for four years i've been working and streaming YT vids on a 15-year-old 'backup tower'... that was in a kitchen trash bag and squirreled away in the back of a clothes closet JIC my 'normal PC died'... which it did. right now? i can't afford a reconditioned laptop or a used PC or the components to build one. heck, i've ZERO technical knowledge on how to build a tower. i can't even afford a pawn-shop priced gaming console either... hah! a new console? it'll never be within my financial grasp... unless i get a new job or a second job atop the one i have now.

So 3 years later with no price drop a pc that cost $100 more than a digital ps5 still loses? Maybe try this again right before ps6 drops.
In this scenario the benefit of the PS5 still outweighs the PC (only in this specific scenario) imo, the PS5 you get a warranty + brand new parts, this PC is 2nd hand with no warranty and requires much more manual setup as opposed to working out the box + as you said, the controller included in the price of the PS5 also, and if you were going to go down the 2nd hand route, PS5 consoles have dropped to around £400 in the UK at least compared to the £500 new.
I’d argue that the PC is better. Sure there’s no warranty, but you don’t really want a warranty on a custom PC anyways. The biggest upside of PC is its modularity. A PC like this isn’t the finish line; it’s a starting point that you can iterate upon for the foreseeable future. Only change I’d make is I’d get the B650 motherboard, as they’re a bit more involved to upgrade than other components.
@@jarrickhillery8664 yes you do want a warranty on your parts if possible lol A B650 would push the price far beyond the 500$ mark which is counterintuitive. Also if you,re looking to upgrade in the future you defeat hte puprose of this video.
Yeah cuz ur biased lmao@@jarrickhillery8664
@@jarrickhillery8664Ever had a component fail on your PC? Yeah, warranty is pretty nice.
What about using an SSD along with a hard drive with about 5 TB? Isn't that an easy upgrade you could make as well? I heard about some way you can use the SSD as your cache (or something like that) while using the hard drive for more long term storage. I might have got my terms wrong but wouldn't that be a good small upgrade?
Honetly harddrives are getting pretty obselete considering how cheap ssds are these days. You could store files on the harddrive and older games sure, but a lot of more modern games are requiring an SSD to work properly otherwise you'll have insane load times and things may break, and this is getting more and more common so a harddrive isn't very future proof.
A PC out of used parts should be compared to a used PS5. And the Ps5 also features a 4K Blu-Ray disc drive. Now thats impossible to get for a PC without killing the budget.
So how much would it cost to get the PS5 to run programs, other OS systems & use the hardware & power of the PS5 to run them? I mean you could buy a cheap smartphone to do some or a cheap laptop. There is no way to get the PS5 to do anything other than game using Playstation games or play other media. It's a restricted eco system piece of tech.
did you get the 3600 mhz on your gskill trident z.. i have the same ram
my specs
Ryzen 5 5600
Asrock B550m Pro4
Gskills TridentZ 2x8gb 3600 MT/s
but when i enambe xmp/expo
i can only get upto 3266 Mhz.
whats ur memory configuration sir linus???
Does your motherboard have the latest BIOS update?
@@ozpin8329 yes lates bios version
@@mactv7342 Don't know what to tell you. There has to be a setting in the bios that unlocks it.
Bruh, stop trying to sound smart with your 3600 MT/s and go relook at what you bought. After you verified that you bought a 3600Mhz ram come back. Though it has been a month, i believe you solved the issue.😂 MT-Mega Transfer: units for measuring data transfer speed. 1:10^6 so it is 1:1. SDram1:1 While DDRram1:2.😊 so erm idk if you will read this @mactv7342. Good luck. Build your own pc but you will probably get it blown up or something.
@@Furry_Lord no.. i think its the ram its not compatible only 3266 mhz
Not plugging a 250 quid backpack during a budget build hahaha, half the budget already on the bag damn
But how else are you going to carry around your PS5 like we all need to do regularly...don't we? 😂
I would say to compare prices between PC and PS5 you should include the price of a year of PSN. The fact that console users have to pay a non-insubstantial yearly fee for online service cannot be overstated.
its such a drag and one thing that I 100pct DONT miss about consoles
@@gandalfurisotherworldly7909atleast with xbox they give you a bunch of games now but i agree
you dont need to play online
@@GatMarksTheSpot True, you also don't have to have fun, but it's damn nice, plus a lot of games will need you to have online acces
Good point, this should compensate for the controller
I agree with everything you said. Been my self both console and PC gamer for a long long time. I think for most of my friends and for alot of people. That PRIZE is the main hurdle. And also think that is not lifted enough in... all streams on this topic. Yea I know you can build budget PC but it aint the same as a console. Its pretty easy to say for a guy that build a career on building computers and been around top end tech last 15 years! But this is not a reality for most families...
So really glad you put a point on this... I really think most should try PC some time in there life to see the different for them self. But I also understand not everybody is that lucky to have the money to do this. Or knowledge!! PC gaming is not cheap and for anyone with low funds its a hell of a lot to invest in. So great Video and always a pleasure to listen to you.
One noteworthy thing is PS Network subscription that's basically mandatory. $10/mo. Assuming the person is going to keep the setup for at least 6 months before considering upgrading some parts, that's $60 saved for future upgrade.
Many games also benefit from M&K vs controller, aside from racing games that are anything beyond total arcade (NFS is totally OK with just M&K).
Bro ignored the shipping on every item. Which were atleast 40 dollars on every single part.
Shipping on consoles to when buyign online. You can get parts for PCs at stores too if ya really wanted.
Just add on about $100 potentially $200 with either petrol to drive to collect the parts to see if they work and the faffing about if you order on eBay and pay for the returns on the packaging and postage if it doesn’t work
With a console it’s plug and play that’s it done if you have a guarantee and it breaks you just send it back to get it repaired or swapped for a new one
The more interesting question is what uses more power to run between em money wise
Also they didnt account for bluray drive which alone are 100$ or more
@@BarGodsRV Or windows OS, yeah you can get it free, but if your going to be anal like Linus, it should be included.
You can do much, much, much more with a gaming PC than with a console tho
This video is bullshit. $700 or $800 at best to make a headache free PC.
Yeah I think if you really need a PC and $500 is all you have to spend this may be an option, but I'd never recommend it. For around 800 you can get all your base components new. The only thing that I'd definitely take a look at is a used GPU if you're comfortable with repasting. The performance boost you can get with the same budget is huge.
The sweet spot for all new is a little over 1000 I'd say. At that point you can double console performance quite easily.
I'd like to note that you can also save substantially by playing on PC because a lot of the games go on massive sales, pretty often. There have been countless times that I have gotten a game for 50% less on PC than my friends have on console. Though PC users will most certainly run into issues though frustrating, it is also a good learning experience. I have had plenty of friends that have gotten into PC gaming that knew absolutely nothing about troubleshooting in Windows and within just a few months they became advanced users.
Great video, it's such a good debate. If you play casually, I don't think you can beat Console value for money and not having to mess around with settings/ compatibility, you just switch it on and play.
"How to build a PC for $500" - got lucky and had a bunch of leftovers and cheap local marketplace parts.
Even if you added $300-400 that would easily be gobbled up by buying a PS5 as just buying a few games means spending hundreds over the multitude of PC games which are not a set price by the publishers due to things like keysites. Also I don't really have to mention torrents. In any case a PS5 is just stuck there waiting for a game or a BlueRay all of which need to be bought or borrowed. A PC can be used for so many other things & can even make games if required.
Honestly the used market hate is just nonsense. GPUs and other components don't hardly ever just fail. The used market is a very good option that has risk, but is not nearly as high as so many will have you believe. They overspent on this PC for it's performance. Like truly, truly overspent.
@@ThreaT650 Yeh I have bought a lot of 2nd hand PC components, RAM, motherboards, CPU's, GPU's SSD's (although probably not wort it now as they are cheap), power supplies. As ppl are upgrading so much they will want some money back on their old components to put towards their upgrades. The GPU#s are the one that ppl have to check on as they can be abused in gaming & now of course local AI such as Stable Diffusion. At least the mining era is over & the newer cards will less likely to have been used for that.
@triax7006 These budget friendly cards or even the mined ones are usually fine. Miners depend on longevity and usually set a custom fan curve and undervolt. It's these like massive 4090s I am meh about because of sag and stuff. We hear about some of these components breaking but not the millions we leave in our closet for half a decade after we upgrade. It's really hard to miss especially with stuff like ebay's buyer guarantees. Same with CPUs. If it passes a stress test and the pins are there, fine. I've bent back plenty of pins, never an issue. Never had a GPU fail or a CPU fail in my life and been building for everyone for 20 years or so. I've seen fans fail, powerplugs fail, and stuff like that on older cards, but this like reballing the core stuff and memory chip failures seem more like a 4090 or 3090 Ti problem than a mid range used card. Either memory chips not being cooled on the other side of the PCB, or sag causing the PCB to twist or worse, crack, or whatever.
@@ThreaT650 Yeh they simply are not used for years for them to wear out beyond what they are engineered for & all components will have enough quality to pass the QC standards. I had a motherboard fail & pretty much that was dead & could not be fixed. People are not really going to be selling dead components & any may have some fixable fault like a fan or just needing new thermal paste.
doing some research and found this video. I am not finding the numbers to number in the $500 range.
currently rocking a samsung 970 evo plus. Imo it's still a blazing fast NVMe ssd and it's great for budget or mid-range builds to save a buck on your ssd to spend on gpu maybe
someone make a gif of 2:26
What monitors are you using in this video? They look great!
Lg oled tvs. 48 inch ones if I have to guess
Still will play on PS or any other console. After working 8h a week at the desk I am not even thinking of sitting at it again after work. Also I just like the system/trophies/UI/lack of launchers etc. I think that many people thinks the same and don't care that PC can produce more fps.
X570s mobo, rx 6750 xt gpu, 5600x cpu, seasonic 750w psu, WD sn850 ssd for OS, WD sn850x ssd for gaming, 16gb ram 3600mhz,EK AIO liquid cooler. My first pc build and I love it! Deffinetly more than $500 like a lot more😂 but worth it.
I can't be arsed with the constant upgrades when you have a gaming PC. At least you know a console game will run well.
Just because new gaming hardware comes out every year doesn't mean you need to upgrade it. There are some people who will go out and buy the latest 4090 to swap out their 3090 but up until recently the humble 1060 was the most popular card in the Steam hardware survey, a card that's practically ancient at this point but still capable.
I had a 1060 for years until last year when I finally upgraded to a RX6600 last year for less than $200. It doesn't run everything I throw at it at max settings, but I've never failed to have it run better than console equivalents in 1080p with over 60fps.
If you're building a PC from scratch like here sticker shock is a thing and it *will* cost more, but if you only upgrade your system every few years you're most likely only changing out a few parts unless switching to a new motherboard generation. The AM4 socket has been going strong for 8 years and they're still making new processors for it, and DDR4 memory has been out and solid for the last decade.
Built my pc just over 4 years ago for around a thousand dollars. I haven’t upgraded it once except for adding some more storage. There’s still not game I’ve encountered that doesn’t run well.
@@jackinzbox. Honestly, I think a lot of big hardware tech channels do a disservice by only exclusively focusing on the latest gen hardware. I'm not saying they don't (I appreciate the low and midrange budget build videos LTT posts once in a while) but I think it continues to spread the stereotype that PC gaming is still prohibitively expensive compared to console gaming when they're routinely showing the performance of rigs that cost more than a thousand dollars.
I enjoy some other channels that focus on builds in the console price range that do indepth analysis about the pros and cons and the compromises you'll make. If a person doesn't need anything more powerful than a chromebook for their "normal" computing needs, then it's perfectly acceptable to get a console.
One thing they all seem to do that I respect is plan their builds with an upgrade path so you can make your system more powerful over time without needing to replace it completely.
