I’ve always had a soft spot for Sony’s refreshed, slimmed-down consoles ever since the adorable PS One. All the Sony consoles I’ve owned were launch versions that are bigger and goofier-looking than their eventual redesigns - giving me massive FOMO - but I think my love affair for “slim” PlayStations is now at an end with the new PlayStation 5.
If there’s ever been a PlayStation in need of a glow-up, it’s the PS5. Sony’s white-and-black obelisk is a gargantuan console with a design that you learn to live with more than you grow to love. The thought of course-correcting the PS5 design like Sony did with the George Foreman grill-style PlayStation 3 should be a slam dunk, but what we’ve now got with the $499.99 new PlayStation 5 and $449.99 new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition are some weird half-measures.

Design-wise, the new “slim” PS5 is indeed smaller. Sony says it’s been reduced in volume by “more than 30 percent,” but up close and in person, I alternate between feelings of “Oh yeah, that’s much smaller” to “Okay, it’s smaller… but it’s still a big boi!” The swooping curves and contours of the new PS5 can have you changing your opinion on its design on a minute-to-minute basis depending on what angle you’re viewing it from. It’s a byproduct of such a fussy and busy (and frankly, kind of ugly) design.

The slim looks more refined than its bigger, clunkier older sibling thanks to its shorter white covers, concave top curve, and panel lines cutting across its sides that divide shiny and matte finishes. However, the new PS5 also makes some really strange design decisions: the disc drive looks even more like a strange growth jutting out of the console’s side, the lack of vent fins at the top makes its gaps look prototype-ish or incomplete, and the cat ear-shaped feet for propping it up horizontally are a joke for an included “stand.” The console stands vertically on its own, though, if you want more peace of mind that it won’t tip over, the vertical stand is now an additional purchase for $29.99. I've never seen someone truly not care about game preservation and it is beyond my comprehension, if I paid for a game, I want it to be able to work with no problem 15 years later just like my ps3.

Im the same way when it comes to pc gaming. epic had fallout 3 for free so i got it but i couldnt play it unless i went to nexus mods made an account downloaded a special set of files and replace some other files. It takes all that to play a 15 year old game on a $1000 pc. On my ps3 i grab the disc put it in i sit down and start the game.

There's no reason we should have to go to all that trouble just to play a really common game, I get that physical games take up room and some people don't like that but the benefits of having a playable game disc for many years to come far outweighs the slight inconvenience of putting the disc in the console.

I wish more people understood the big implications of the loss of physical media. We should be using disks where possible. But second hand when you can too.

I wish there was better preservation, but most of the games require full installs and many of them require large updates. Plus most indies are digital only except for limited run releases for collectors.
I still go back to my super nintendo, n64, ps1, 2, 3, game cube, and Wii to this day! Consoles without disc drives will be rendered useless in the future!
Ill always favor having a physical disk. Feels nice and reliable to own a physical copy, and i enjoy getting steel cases from deluxe editions of my favorite games. Plus the resale market
Exactly one of the main reasons I always go disc is because if I want to sell the game there’s always that option
@@freelarrytrumpnot to mention that if you go down the digital root. You’ll almost always be paying full price for the game no matter how old it is unless you wait a month for it to MAYBE be on offer. E.g. Ghost of Tsushima digitally costs £60; on disc it costs £20-£30.

Problem in modern gaming is all the updates, so even with a disk the games aren’t patched up on release so regardless you’re relying on digital

@@checob224 for gaming I’ve been all digital purchases since 2017 but for movies and tv shows I’m all in on physical media and got the disc edition PS5 for the extra 4K Blu-ray player myself.
Nothing weird about buying games on disc. It's generally cheaper than digital and if you don't like the game you can always sell it. You're probably right that the next generation will be digital only, but for now I'm happy buying discs or at least have the option to.

I really hope physical stays cause if we’re heading in a future only digital then Sony better shell out a ps5 model with lots of storage space cause game size files are only going to go up unfortunately.

Lol the ps5 install games from physical games and stores them then in its storage. Anyway I prefer digital and physical. Most of my games are digital and only a few are physical on my PS5 also, I have quite a lot of space, since I expanded my storage on my ps5.
A 1 TB SSD literally costs 100 bucks, 2 TB 170 bucks.
Another thing. Do we even really own our console when you have to go online to even be able to play any games at all! Including offline games. You literally have to go online before you can switch to offline. This is crazy!

When you pay your internet that just goes to your ISP.
None of it goes to pay for the bandwidth to run game servers and online infrastructure, which is a permanent recurring cost for the manufacturer.

Hi Jimmy. I listen to you and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to get a PS5 or PS5 Slim at all. I'm ALL IN on XBox. I have a gaming PC and every model of XBox that has ever come out, OG, 360, One, One S, One X, Series S and Series X. I also have an ROG Ally and am loving the whole XBox echo system. If I want to play Play Station games I go to my Steam account on my PC and go for it. You are experiencing with your PS Eco System what I and many other XBox users out there experience and that is the whole game save transfer and games with your account, etc, following you to your different devices. I LOVE that aspect of what XBox has done. So, kudos to you for seeing that in the PlayStation Eco system. It's great. I respect what PlayStation has done for gamers over the years and started with an Original PlayStation back in the day. I moved to XBox because, at the time, I was taking Microsoft courses for computers and such and wanted to see what Microsoft would do with gaming and boy have I not been disappointed much. (SOME but not much). I encourage you to keep going. Gamers deserve to have more than one side of the gaming community and story and you and Ray (at XBox Ready) tell that full story from both ends of the spectrum. SHAPE ON, Man!!!! :D

Sony still want $79 for Witcher 3 , that disc sells for $15 in bargain bins .
Sony can just as easily invalidate your disc remotely through an update.
There is no difference between physical and digital when it comes to theoretical longevity. When you buy physical it plainly states you are only buying a license to play the game.

Just because Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo aren't interested doesn't necessarily mean the end of physical. Maybe Sega might get into(off line) consoles again? Unlikely but you never know. The PlayStation came from out of nowhere remember.

The problem with the ps5 slim disc edition, is the fact that you need to conect to sony servers to be able to use it, and if you reset your console, you have to pair the disc drive again, because when the servers are shutdown is not gonna be able to use the disc drive.
My brother just bought one after holding on to his ps4. He can use the disc drive offline after it has been paired in the initial setup.
@PrettySavage22 try to use it after reseting the console and not connecting it on the internet .

I got it finally just two days ago and yes even though I have at least 50 games purchased and stored digitally I still have (and most likely will continue to buy) discs so I got the slim with the disc option. Also there’s always the chance of there being issues with not getting the games you bought digitally or some kind of headaches hassles and horseshit that Sony is good for. As long as I have some games on disc(and those will definitely include a good deal of favourites) I know I’m ok. On another note I gotta say I’m really loving how quiet this thing is.. couldn’t hear it when I started it up and the loading time is almost nonexistent. Not to mention downloading! I transferred from my 4 and downloaded AC Valhalla in minutes. On my 4 that all would’ve taken a couple hours.…Thanks for making this video and letting us all know about taking it apart and the extra game drive situation. I guess that’ll help with maintenance and cleaning for OCD people like me.
The old PS5 disc version works out of the box without an online connection. The new slim requires an internet connection. That makes the answer an easy one for those who care about making sure their systems can keep working regardless whether Sony's server is working.
What? You just need internet connection once for the initial connection, not every time you start it up
The point is why have it all? Sony could have already paired the device out of the box for the disc based console but it didn't. Btw, if you ever need to reset it (let's say to sell it), you need internet again. It may lool like a small thing, but if Sony decides to pull the plug on the ping needed, that would obliterate the slim's disc consoles.
So if internet is down for instance, the original ps5 can still be used but the new slim one can’t??

Hey great video thank you. So since you ran into a problem on install with expandable SSD and then disc drive would you recommend that when I get mine (uk) I do the initial set up then insert the hard drive afterwards?
I was hoping to insert hard drive 1st so there is no current going through it but I don’t like the idea of having to restart console if it hangs on screen for 10 mins like yours did. Cheers!
If I'm correct you have to use a certain type of expandable SSD I've seen videos saying try to be careful when screwing and unscrewing the screw because it can get chipped apart over time. And make sure it's the correct type and to properly connect the new SSD
The PS slims never outperforms the original PS. It is just smaller .
I don't live in a shoe box so even if my Ps5 was larger it would easily fit .

They almost always outperform in cooling and power usage.
Also the slim PS2 had a faster chip, literally, and built in Ethernet. The PS1 slim model had a greatly improved disc drive and faster VRAM, which led to things like higher frame rates in FF9.

I picked up the slim/spider man bundle, this is the first PlayStation I’ve ever bought so I don’t have anything to compare it to & I haven’t got to spend to much time with it but I did notice that while installing the physical copy of god of war that the disk drive was pretty noisy, is this normal or just an install thing? Didn’t notice any fan noise while downloading Spider-Man to the SSD.
yeah no worries it is normal when downloading a disc!
I think it’s suspicious that the new design is focused around the disc drive since my original design ps5 has developed a disk read error. I’m sure that issue has been buried due to the redesign, but I’m sure it’s pretty common that the original design having a disc read error due to faulty components.
11/10/23 I still am using my PS4 with a disc drive an added external 2tb SSD external drive upgrade that still meets my needs for a gaming console. I still prefer the consoles with the disc drive since the blue disc drive of the PS3 for watching Blue Ray disc movies and playing disc game without filling up your hard drive on games you only played occasionally. I would upgrade to the PS5 slim with disc drive when I see more value games that I like playing, right now it seem like slim picking on what is offered on new PS5 games. And hopefully a PS software update Sony will figure a way to emulate the PS3 so it be backward compatible, like some games on the Xbox S are capable of now. I'm running out of room and connections to set up all the counsels and games to my TV.

They make hdmi switchers where you plug 3 devices and theres a switch on top to switch between them. Look it up online.

The ps5 plays all 3,454 ps4 games that were made .
My Ps4 disc of Jedi Fallen Order still had to download much of the game from Sony store .

I find it laughable that Sony is talking about going digital considering that they had invented the Blu-Ray player back in the 90s and won against the HD DVD player. How times have changed.

A lot of people seem to think you need to pair the disk drive more than once, when you add storage it checks for everything to make sure it’s working other than that you never have to do it again

my ONE question is if the disc drive is hardware locked after you connect it. Can I take a disc drive from a broken donor PS5-slimmer and sell the disc drive or put it in a digital PS5-slimmer? or is it locked to my first PS5-slimmer? it would be extremely anti-consumer and creating e-waste. Which is par for the course lately. I'll get my answer sooner than later...

I think that's the least of our problems. For me the lack of dolby vision making this console ancient. PS5 is very low quality console for 2023. It's just twice more powerful than the 4 Pro and the 4 Pro is just revision to the regular PS4 which was weak, outdated console from the beginning.

Disc drives are a big deal! I live in a rural area with not so great internet. I am limited to 250 GB a month and download speeds are slow. I can watch videos online at lower qualities but online games are a no go. If I buy a digital game or there is a big update it can take up to THREE DAYS to download (Looking at you Master Chief Collection). Also I have been skeptical of digital stuff ever since my Xbox 360 red lighted and I couldn't log into my account so all of my games, DLCs and progress were lost. To this day I still buy CDs, DVDs, and physical games unless digital is the only option (Old or Indie games).

4:23 I got that same issue with the dual sense update. After a couple mins I did the same thing restarted and continued with the update. Everything seems to work now.
When the Disc-less PS5 comes out, it will probably need a "foot" be screwed in onto the left side (bottom of the unit), otherwise the unit will tip over. If you buy the Disc-less version to stand it up the unit is not going to cost you $450, but, rather $480. If you buy after-market covers, and you decide to later on install a disc drive you will probably need to buy new covers.If you put your PS5 behind your TV then it doesn't matter what it looks like, you're not going to be able to see it, nor that one panel is glossy and another is matte, but, installing a controller charging cable could be problematic, as would installing after-market receivers, like BT headphone dongles. So, it may be that the disc version will look better horizontally, and the disc-less version will look better vertically, but that vertical digital-only version is going to cost you $480 and not $450.

Do physical disks hold the entire game today? Or are there limitations running physicals depending on its release date, ie: a physical released on a 1st run versus a physical released a year later - or are such physical releases no longer a priority?
If it say's on the game case interenet required then the only thing on the disc is the copy right Licenses. But the vast majority of games are not interenet required. So there is a full game on the disc. Xbox on the other hand nothing on the disc. That is why i switched from xbox to PlayStation. But the original PS5 does not need interenet to play games but the PS5 slim needs interenet to activate it's disc drive but after that you can game offline.
@@JACK-DETH thanks for the info about PS5 - still on PS4 and Switch - initially for both systems it was physical buys then during Pandemic we purchased mostly digital and lately have not looked at current physical games in person since.
@@cafeapaka7501 since 2007 i was using xbox 360. Tried xbox one x February 2020 did not like it so i got a refund. So in July 2020 tried the PS4 PRO enjoyed it alot. 2021 first tried digital games but if i like a game i get a fiscal copy as backup. Digital games say in the fine print you are renting for an infinite amount of time nobody owns a single digital game. PS4 controllers are fully operational on PS5. If you do anything except play PS5 games then you can basically treat the PS5 like it's another PS4. GranD scheme there is no rush to get a PS5 right now your not missing anything. I bought my PS5 as a backup for my PS4 PRO.

The more packages you have the more things you can do at that the same time because the controller bounces data from chip to chip to chip at the same time. The fewer flash chips you have the lower the ability to do that. Ie lower throughput because you have less ability to distribute work.
Here in the uk they have just reduced the slim ps5 to £419 and I managed to find the original console last night for £369 so after watching this video, I’m glad I went for the original.
People complaining about the XboxOne made digital games worse. When the XB1 was first announced Microsoft had this whole plan to make digital games sellable/transferable. But people complained about that plan because they wanted traditional disc games and didn’t like the always online requirement so they scrapped it. But now we’re all transitioning to digital anyway, but without the ability to sell/transfer those games. Had Microsoft followed through with their original plan, and Sony eventually followed suit, we’d have a system where we could actually sell digital games that we're no longer playing, instead of just having them stuck in our digital libraries indefinitely. I have dozens of digital games that I've played and will never play again that I wouldn’t mind selling for a few bucks.

Still not a fan of the cosmetic look or the lack of pre-PS4 backwards compatibility but got the PS5 Slim for Christmas. Easy initial setup but immediately have the downloads stuck in queued problem. Seems like something that should be at the top of Playstation's 'must fix' list. Still looking forward to the exclusive games but hoping for smoother functionality. Some noticeable negatives for now.
The Slim looks so small I like it and will pick one up next month with Spiderman 2 Can't wait 😂
Phycical games with the ability to play them offline for one simple reason ownership!
I feel the paring is just so if you do take it to like a friend house and put the disc tray on there ps less to have to worry bout it just starting your ps idk. Just a thought

I just bought the ps5 slim never had the original and i literally thought the slim was huge so i cant imagine how big the regular ps5 is in person
Biggest issue downloading the game when u have a physical copy is more storage , vs less room even 2TB doesn’t download enough games vs have to physical copy
Bought a slim digital not knowing anything other than how I was just happy to get a PS5. Along with it I ordered three games (old school disc version). Spent way too much time trying to find where to put the disc in the system. haha. Felt old. Learned that I have to guy the add-on disc drive which I'm happy to do since I'm old school. Thought I had made a huge mistake though before I knew the add-on was a thing.. ;)
I got my first PS5 the day before thanksgiving and was super excited. Unfortunately they only had the COD bundle with the new PS5 and I do have to agree it’s unfortunate I wasn’t able to grab the Spider-Man one. I’m really not a fan of this COD, I really tried to give it a chance and honestly when I got it, I had not seen any reviews, no insight whatsoever on the game. Now after playing a few hours I can 100% understand why it’s being so heavily ripped apart. It just feels like an unfinished, bare bones, no frills FPS game. Like nothing special at all. The system on the other hand! Loving it! Just sad I’m gonna have to pay the full price for Spider-Man and most likely never even finish the COD.
Keep the unit and hopefully you kept all the box and packaging.
It will become a collectable item in the near future.
Hey! I wouldn’t count yourself weird just because you like physical media. I’m not the only one who prefers physical media when it comes to games. But personally, I like the disc drive, because I can also watch movies on this console. And it’ll play 4K Blu-ray discs as well. But whatever you do, don’t try to play a CD in it. It won’t work. But personally, when I buy a game, I like to physically have something in return for forking over the money.
if i buy the non-slim digital edition ps5, is there no disc drive available for that if i wanted it later ?
GameStop is not in Ireland anymore, the only store over here now is Smith's Toy Store.
I took mine out the box plugged it up, it got hung up the same way after the controller update.

i like the idea on the ps5 slim that the disk drive is removable it makes it easy to replace if anything does go wrong with it i have a ps3 slim from 2009 that had a problem with its disk drive literally a month after the warrenty was up.... i took it apart an figured out that the metal casing for the disk drive for some reason was stopping the lil plastic arms from moving so the disk wouldnt eject or even go in i took the metal casing off an it worked again i still have that ps3 it basically just a dvd player now tho lol
I like the slim and the way it look. But there's something I kind of get it about why some people hate it, and I'm talking about the noise of the fan that is loud because there's a video showing about it. I got the original disc edition and so far it's still in good condition when I bought it four months ago.
I got a slim and it's barely even noticeable. And I played a PS4 game on a disc to boot.
I can't even hear the slim at all even if I put my ear up to it it's quit af

My slim gets pretty hot and sometimes loud with occasional ticks, should I exchange it for a new console? I have it in a spacious area, not smothered in a cabinet.

I have OG PS5 with disc. I only use the disc drive to watch my collection of DVDs whenever internet goes out. I game strictly digital.
I bought a used Ps5 disc of Spider-Man from a bargain bin for $15 that game is $68 to digitally buy from PS store in Canada.
Witchers 3 is still $70 and that game is in used bargain bins for $20 everywhere I look.
I can go on and on all day how disc games are cheaper to buy than digital .

No it doesn't matter because they play from the same source. When you put the disc in, it installs all the disc content on to the internal storage drive. Same as if you would Download it. The only difference is the way you get the game into the system. The Output is the same.
But i still urge you to get a ps5 with a disc drive.
Physical copy is cheaper , then digital , it’s also resellable , I rather have my struggle to sell my console and games discs vs sell my dam account with my pS5
Losing the disc drive would be the absolut K.O. criteria for me.
If i can not play modern games outside of getting them digital then i won't play them at all.
And in case if i ever would want to play them, i would sail the high seas before i even spend one cent in supporting such a system.
It wouldn't make a difference to the producer. Not playing or sailing would result in the same Outcome of them not getting paid and if they made that conscious decision to go that route then that clearly means they don't care if they have one person less who pays for it.
So….., the Slim has a cheaper and noisier is drive. Its just smaller but not better.
This is the size that should have originally released in 2020.
I had the same issue with the setup where it was just on the blank screen with sparkles until I turned it off. After it turned back on it did the same thing and updated the disc drive, wonder why that is
Thats very weird I've never had a ps5 do that before tbh. Sounds like it's been turned on already because it usually only does that when someone clears it. I would return it and get an exchange asap.

The missing grills on the slim compared to the original just makes it look like cheap tat. I don't even own a PS5 yet, still buying the original disc version with darkplates.
Reviews I have seen say the PS slim is actually a lot louder because of the fan noise. Some people have had to return then as it is so loud.
Yup I have the original digital PS5. It's worked out great, however it would be good to have a drive as I do have some 4K blu ray movies to play on it. So I just bought a the disc PS5 slim Spider-man 2 bundle for only $500. The Spider-man 2 game comes with it for free! IDK when the deal will end but I guess Sony will end the deal where you get a free game with the console in February.

Some people don't have internet, they just want to game
So I'm not sure if anyone will see this,but I'd like an answer for this if possible, im looking to buy a ps5 very soon,and my main issue is if you can use the slim offline or not past the setup & updates. As my internet currently isn't fast at all (satellite Internet). And I'd like to know if the slim is just as offline friendly as the original in terms of physical games,or if it's like XBSX/S where it requires online checks every now and then. I would greatly appreciate anyone who sees this & answers
I’m all for the concept of digital only. It makes the form factor of consoles slimmer and physically more appealing imho. However not owning out downloads we paid for (obviously games on gamepass or PS+ you don’t own), that’s kinda dealbreaker imho. I don’t want to pay for the cost of a game and not be able to download it down the line because Sony or Microsoft removed it from the games library

Mine hung on that screen just starting it normally brand new the same way. I shut it off an turned it on and same just started at the updat screen right away and finished fine
I got the original disc version with mw3 and two years worth of psn for £409 and my entertainment unit is big enough “ no brainier!”
I'm a PS5 owner and I love it but, I didn't think that the PS5 could get any uglier but it looks like it has.
Jimmy, shame on you for not getting a middle strip from dbrand. The matte black one so Kick-Ass with the black plates. I have Sony black plates and the dbrand middle.
I'm hoping that the old style PS5 models stick around for a while because I'm hoping to get my son one within the next 6 months.

@roba168 yea it was a sell out at one point then no store had any in stock so now the slim is here and I got one too... surprised it's a download code and not the physical copy... but it's all good.
I did not have to pair my disc drive on my new ps5. Just plugged it in transferred my account to it and put a disc in and worked.
If they quite making consoles with disc drives I won’t buy them I’ll go to pc.
As original 1200 series and slim has the same 6nm chip, for longevity i think original ps5 is better because it has bigger seatsink, bigger fan so it runs cooler

It's not cooler than the slim because the "slim" has 19 blades fan instead of a 17 like the OG
What’s the benefit of buying the vertical stand? The PS5 slim looks like it’s pretty stable without the vertical stand.
probably a little more stable, perhaps help with airflow through vents at the bottom. Otherwise it's cosmetic; completes the "look" of the machine.
For me personally, it’s the airflow. Used to use bottle caps to elevate my consoles
I still don't get why digital games cost more. It only takes a few games to make the dic version value for money.
Because the digital games are set in a Monopoly. Thats why. No competition to Challenge the prices.

You don't have to buy a subscription to buy single digital games you play offline
So what Happen to Game Stop if the next Gen Don't Received Disc.
Game stores will cease to exist in the next 2 years. Here in Our country, all game stores are pretty much gone. The only way to buy Physical games is through Online stores.

And there is nothing wrong with disc I just don’t buy disc and there are some games that I would want to preorder so yeah both versions are good
I have normal ps5 and plates dont feel like they break when removing it but maybe im just better
