- Come along and see what a typical day-in-the-life of a HOMESCHOOLED, MIDDLE SCHOOLER in AMERICAN SAMOA is like.
Holden deals with diagnosed ADHD, which makes it difficult for him to focus and stay organized. While he does take medication and sees a psychologist on a monthly basis, he still struggles. Half-way through last school year, we decided to pull him out of traditional school and homeschool him. With Melinda's background in Language Arts and Physical Education and Nate's background Math and Economics and a variety of accredited resources available online, we felt up to the challenge.
Holden thrives in this learning environment and, at least for the time being, we're happy to keep him in a place where he can flourish, rather than being contained inside an academic box.
Most days, we keep to a schedule, while still keeping ourselves open to unexpected opportunities. In this day, we were able to participate in the American Samoa Visitor's Bureau Samoan Arts day, where Holden learned about elei painting and got to take his newly decorated ie lavalava home with him.
He also accompanied Melinda, in her effort to get her travel guide, EXPLORE AMERICAN SAMOA- The Complete Guide to Tutuila, Aunu'u, and Manu'a Islands, for sale at local stores. You can now find the guidebook at Forsgren's and the Turtle and Shark Gift Shop.

What a cutie! He did a great job MCing the video 🥳😁👍 It was very interesting and of course the scenery is always beautiful 😍
Thank you for sharing your son’s home schooling adventure for a day. He speaks with such preciseness and clarity of his days events. I love the culture experience that he was exposed to in the Elei painting. Cool he got to keep his work of art. A palagi kid, in the sixth grade in American Samoa to share his course studies is awesome. Keep up the good work kiddo. Kudos to mom for home school sharing.
Keep it coming little champ!!! Sending massive hugs and alofas to you and the AmSamFam🇦🇸🤙

Great job young man and thanks for sharing your story.
Bro love your accent man. Sounds like you got a bit of that island swag incorporated. Seki work out. Much alofa Western Sydney
Great job Holden! Very interesting day you have. You are very well spoken. Minecraft and a favorite of mine too. Do you create gadgets with red stone circuits? If not, maybe your parents can check it out for/with ya.
Teachers back home should do better honestly. I think homeschooling your son was a great choice. The education in American Samoa is old fashion despite the technology implemented. Old fashion meaning the cultural morals are used in the education which I really don't like at all. I'm sure a lot of kids would want to be Holden's friend, such a bright and talented kid
