The key takeaway from all these "started from the bottom now we here" videos is just how much of a saint Yvonne is.
this was a dumb take that i regret

@@gamagama69 that's a dumpster take. It isn't Trump's dad giving a "small $1M loan" here. Linus grew up with very little and worked hard (and got lucky) to get to this point.

It would be amazing if you guys made a series about "remastering" old PC builds you did in the past where you build everything with modern hardware while preserving the original vibe of the builds (or the entire setup).
What I learned from this video: Yvonne's parents are absolutely deserving of sainthood.
To the unsung heros: her parents.
Honestly right?
They're watching 23:10 just on a constant loop
They got a Tesla out of it, plus free tech support and wireless internet on an island, IIRC
He went from the "sad son-in-law" to "do you know our son-in-law had an offer of 100 million for his company?" Yvonne for the win.
Moral of this ENTIRE video:
Thank you Yvonne, and Yvonnes' parents. Without the tolerance of Yvonnes parents and the love of Yvonne, LTT never would've happened. 🙏🙏 Many thanks, many thanks.
I think Linus made this exact point a couple months ago on the WAN Show. Couldn't agree more.
Linus’ nature and the support of his loved ones are what make his life the best.
So true 👍
We might have gotten LinusPaintTips instead
The "pirating" software you saw was Nero cd burner. I still remember that darn UI. The top meter is either the read buffer if ripping a cd, or the write buffer if burning.
I literally came into comments to find this. That red Nero logo is *burned* into my head.
Yep... Same here, that was Nero CD Burn process, ingrained in my brain from many, many people/clients who burn their CD's for projects, photo albums, etc from 2004... (I was a net cafe admin on those times)... XD
I came here looking for this - because I still use it now.
@@Ayrshore it should be quicker now with modern processors 🤩
I thought it was CDBurnerXP lol, but Nero, wow that takes me back
This cracks me up so bad. In my awkward teen years, I used to always see Linus on G4 and his early YT days. It's funny seeing how far things have come, changed... but Linus hasn't. Never change. Alex, Riley, Jake and everyone else are all great. You could do nothing and let all your employees host, work - but you still do it. One of the biggest things that has me coming back - the feel hasn't changed after all these years. It doesn't feel like some big commercial YT channel. Even though you're a multi-million dollar business now. Enjoy the same goofiness that has always been present- 10+ years now, shaking my head as you vertically build PCs, and the outlandish things you love doing with tech. Never change.
PS. You never looked like a lesbian, don't let some stupid kids bully you on the internet.
Linus was on G4? Didn't know that.
@@KaiFulci yeah I don’t remember that and I used to watch g4 constantly. I assume he would have been on the screensavers? Maybe attack of the show. God that was such a great time to be alive.

I like how Linus blends the ads into the videos instead of assuming I'll watch a 2min ad at the start of video(or the end which is a lot of faith in the viewers) for something I probably won't buy or even afford if I was interested.
Yvonne being extremely supportive and her parents having the patience of saints has to be the best part of this video.
well like yvonne her parents must have seen the potential in linus. the dude is basicly a self made millionaire.
@@misanthropicsophist no
no one not even linus would of suspected he would be a millionaire when he was older
@@Partyweeb he didn't say they saw him to be a future millionaire. He said they saw potential in Linus. They most likely saw his passion for tech and saw how hard he worked while doing extracurriculars. They were investing in him as a person to support him to become something. @da best Yeah, I would think that would've made him more tolerable. There's a distinct and obvious difference between a lazy dead-beat living in his girlfriend's parents' house and someone who is genuinely passionate about something and works hard on it (despite being what most would consider "unproductive" in society).
"I used it to lubricate the back door" I see what you did there.

That Arctic Cooling GPU cooler was legendary. I had one installed on my old 9800SE (soft modded to 9800Pro) and it worked so much better than the stock cooler.
This is computer history, biopic, romantic comedy and ads all combined very wholesomely. It didn't need to be a roast, such a fascinating story!
Yvonne being super supportive of Linus is so sweet, super great to see where LMG turned out today cause they deserve all their success!!!

Honestly, this is great. I haven't built PCs for long, but seeing what other people had to go through before my time, it's a humbling experience for me for sure

You can tell how supportive Yvonne is of Linus when she lets her bedroom be used as a workspace.
Or how supportive Linus is for letting Yvonne's parents live in his workspace
are you surprised? young Linus would definitely be a fck boy if he had game and different character/hobbies. I bet girls were all over him until they talked to him xD jokes aside Yvonne and her parents are saints
I identify multiple (similar) builds of my own during the same time. And that's why we LOVE Linus, you a pure pc enthusiast just the rest of us. Keep going man!!
I remember the black light setup, had a few of my own. Crazy looking back and thinking about what I thought was cool then. Of course back then there wasn't RGB lighting so we had to do what was available.

I loved the part at the very end where Luke said to hell with it, we are going down memory lane the meeting can be a couple minutes late. Yvonne and Luke were the best parts of Linus when it came to LMG. Without their unwavering support and endless dedication, we would never have the tech media giant we enjoy today.
this is such a nostalgia trip I used to build my PCs with my dad and I was broke af had to improvise, all these builds are like high-end shit for me but those monitors and janky setups just fun to remember, we really come a long way from a much more simpler times

Great content! Could you do some kind of "what if secenario" we take current spec mid tier laptop and install software from 20 years ago and put it into productivity scenarios?
I had some of those light tubes at 6:24. This was pre-led so they were like some kind of fake neon or very early bad LED tech. The 12v adapter cord would shock the F out of you when you were trying to position them like sticking your tongue to a 9v battery. The tubes were unyielding plastic definitely from a very short era between old style LEDs (Radio Shack days) and the great stuff we have now. I don't miss these tubes. The low voltage remote controllable cut-able LED strips we have now are better in every way.
13 years ago in the NCIX days, Linus helped me unlock my Phenom Ii X3 to an X4. For the $400 invested in the entire build, this was the worst and best computer I've ever built. So much so I keep it set up in my basement to play D3.

Love this video, seeing the MX Duo peripherals was like a freight train of nostalgia.
Dude this is nice! Takes me back when i was little when my dad was around, we lived in a small town in Oklahoma, i had me a Pentium 4 Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows XP. One year for my birthday if i remember right, my grandparents got me a CD with a shortcut to the 3D Pinball on it saying it’s a new game for my birthday, little me never knew until later on.. but still made me happy. I loved spending time playing random online games and such with my friends. This takes me back to simpler times.
The fact that Linus remembers this like it was yesterday is impressive - including the motherboard model names.
TBH, at that age I'd be researching components for weeks before making a purchase, I remember my first 4 motherboards by name too because of how many times I read about them and then walking to the computer store with a piece of paper with the correct mobo name.
@@jeremyg9305 Damn, true! If you are making upgrade once for a very king time, for not youre money, you better be sure that it is going to be good! :D so you read it so many times, check it, and then OC it, etc, you can have these models next to youre name on grave :D
Yet the « worst pcs » are actually better than mine
Or he's probably only pulled up the pictures he can account for and/or could research.
Linus just has an absurd memory/knowledge of PC components. There's a This Is video where Austin Evans quizzes Linus on old technology to show my point. The video is titled "I showed You My Tech Tip" for any curious.
3 things to mention here:
- These builds were not trash but just according to the time they were built. We make fun of it now but I have seen far worse from that time.
- What rly sucked were the desks. Holy crap Linus! Just dont spend a fortune on UV stuff and get a desk that can fit your peripherals :D
- Yvonne must really love Linus
Getting a decent computer desk back then wasn't as easy as you'd think. Lots had a bunch of cubbies and shelf things built in that just got in the way with pretty tiny keyboard trays. A lot kind of expected you to use the mouse on top of the desk and not the same level as the keyboard, which is an RSI problem waiting to happen lol. They also had to be far more robust as those old CRT displays weighed A LOT!
TBF I had a very similar "PC" desk. they were everywhere at the time and sucked absolute ass. The idea was that the PC is the secondary thing on the desk and therefore your primary space is important, but neither shelf was really usable for its purpose. However, the sales pitch very much appealed to my parents, so I had a hard time getting something else until later. :D
No escuse for the folding desks though. Jeez Linus.
LOL my desk barely fits my mouse, keyboard and monitor. My Thermaltake View 71 case sits on a end table at the end of my desk. It would likely shatter the glass on the desk anyway.
I mean…she DOES have three kids with him.
I'm currently using a $20 folding table from Walmart as my desk with a computer that cost over $5,000 and an LG OLED as a monitor on top of it
11:44 i think that is nero burning a cd or so...ahhh..the memories
I think I still have that Logitech keyboard around here somewhere. It might even still work. I think when I got it, it was replacing a Yahoo Internet Keyboard that had almost entirely stopped working and was basically an enormous two-port USB hub. Man, that Yahoo keyboard had SO many extra buttons.
I get that this was intended to be a roast.. but honestly? The real tale here is how incredibly wholesome it is to have someone who is like-minded and supportive of your passions. And look how far you've come. You the real MVP, Yvonne.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane though. I kind of yearn for this era of PC DIY because it was so unique and personal. A lot of builds these days seem so cookie cutter with all the trends and matching product lines and brand "ecosystems".
I remember he said this on a WAN show, that LTT Media Group wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Yvonne, she told him to drop college if he wasn't happy doing it and go work for NCIX, which he did and the rest is history....
The PC Gods looked at Yvonne when she told that to Linus and said "hold on, let her cook"
Nothing against her personality but Linus is the breadwinner. I always find it disturbing when women get undue credit. It's the man that has the real life struggles while the women sit comfortably at home cooking and cleaning. It's important sure but it's much easier to be the woman in the relationship. Anyways it's good that you learned something today. Carry on.
@@damanwithaplan8056 Lmao, I don't know if you are a troll, or just don't know the story of LMG. Yvonne worked as a pharmacist and funded Linus' company when they weren't earning anything. She paid Luke and Edzel's salary from her own paycheck, looked after their kids, and went to work as a pharmacist, all while working as a self-taught accountant for LMG. So don't assume stuff about things you don't know.

i still have a working logi G15 keyboard in great shape. the orange screen is so fun, and you can still get it to show CPU stats and stuff on modern equipment
I really think Linus should do a retro build with the helix coil cooler and demonstrate to fans how to paint everything. That would be such a great episode.
Too late now, but I would genuinely enjoy an April Fool's joke of Linus renaming the company to Linus Paint Tips for the day and posting a full-blown painting video of various stuff. They could up it by DBRAND sponsoring it with their new home wallpapers.

A huge thanks to Yvonne and her parents for everything they've done that has made Linus and LMG into what it is now
All those early days stuff from the QX9770 (Linus had a q6600) to the 3D IZ3D monitor i had used. Crazy times in the industry.
The 1st computer I ever built I opted to use CCT lighting because I thought LEDs were dumb and too expensive at the time. I still don't really use LED, normally turning off any of them that can be easily turned off.
I remember seeing Linus and his ridiculous AC-cooled computer at CapLan way back then. I thought that he was still using his massively-overclocked Barton CPU at that time, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. After he lugged it in he had to run the air conditioner for a while to chill the loop before he could turn it on. What a machine it was.
Everybody gangster until Linus shows up to the LAN with a dedicated AC unit attached to his PC.

@@sandboy5880 The amount of people that for example took up space like linus at yvonnes parents is more common than those that can do the work, have or can gain the required skills and wills for the timeframe, where building an industry leader in an emerging space of profit is doable even with those skills and wills. And Linus have talked about them discussing their feelings about work life balance earlier.
@@Jimunu
Okay but what does that have to do with "supporting someone no matter what"?
@@sandboy5880 that I agree with you and gave reasons why.
@@Jimunu
Oh I see, I'm sorry then.
I misunderstood your post.
@@sandboy5880 No prob. It's easy to misunderstand.
We got into computers about the same time. I remember all this stuff and really wanna do a new school rig with old school aesthetics like cold cathode and the old water cooling stuff. I still have my old uv ide cables and a few cases from back then
During the early 2000s I was enamoured with dual CPU boards and i still have a dual tualatin setup i built in an old Gateway case
Truthfully I started watching this episode thinking this was one of those episodes CZcamsrs don't have anything interesting and just do anything to push a video real quick and finished telling myself this could actually easily pass for one of the best videos I've watched on LTT. That's a big complement considering the kind of nerdy stuff you guys put up. Great storyline!
Linus is so lucky to have had parents supportive of his PC passion. My parents were like "This computer thing is going to ruin your life" and literally forced me away from it all the time.
This mindset from some parents always boggled my mind. Computers and tech rule the world now, and anyone with any foresight saw it coming years in advance, but so many other people looked at the same data and actually said "NAH THIS IS CLEARLY A PASSING FAD." Wtf? 🤷♂️
@@volkerball85 you're assuming they 'looked at the same data', when it's more like they never bothered to check and just couldn't see the world past their livelihoods.
Pretty easy for someone who does nothing most of their lives apart from office work or manual labor to see this "computer" thing, and this "internet" and be unable to see how that could ever affect them.
@@DanielFerreira-ez8qd That's more what I meant, though. I didn't mean actual data/figures, but rather just that it should've been at least somewhat obvious (imo at least) that computers were set to change the entire world just by looking around oneself, especially as the technology began to spread into homes and businesses. I don't always choose my words as well as I could, but you're spot on.
Just remember that when you complain about kids on the phone playing games or watching tiktok nowadays you are doing the same thing
@@dscarmo Not really the same as building PCs and making a business from it though, is it?
This made me remember my first PC that I got in 2002. It was a used gray box that had a Pentium 4 and a Geforce 2 GTS with a whopping 32MB of VideoRAM.
My Dad had bought it off of a colleague with some games and I remember the first I ever played on it was Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear.
I was 9 years old at the time so I didn't understand what I had to do or what was going on really and didn't play it again until I was like 12 and that time I absolutely loved it. Such an amazing game for the time, I wish they'd make some sort of remake of it.
Anyway, by like 2005 the Computer was utterly broken. It just crashed randomly and almost every game had rainbow textures due the Graphics Card being broken I guess.
Still had to use it until like 2007 when I finally got a new one with an Athlon 64 X2 and a Geforce 8600GT. Just imagine the Performance jump..
And yes, it could run Crysis.. barely.
Make sure you tell Yvonne thank you from all of us! It's hard to say what path your life would've went down without her supporting your tech obsession, but the outcome is exactly perfect and what needed to happen!
Watching this explains a lot with Linus' behavior in the early years where he'd freak out over the cost of things (before they got everything for free). I'm the same way, extremely frugal, because I also grew up in a family without a lot of money.
Very similar jounary for me as a 1988 kid in UK. Loved the a7n8x-deluxe board. I watercooled that bad boy with uv green back in the day with danger den compoents. Its crazy how I remember this as like it was yesterday, but cannot remember anything else around that time in my childhood
Linus was mewing
Yvonne and her parents are obviously amazing people.
Not a chance in hell I'd be able to take up that much space in my girlfriend's room or in her parents' family room.
lol I cant even take up room in my own bedroom that I am sharing with my brother
Even with how many things have been going wrong with the tech house, I think it's safe to say Linus' kids are gonna grow up with slightly less janky tech setups than their dad did 😂
They're growing up with _high budget_ jank.
They're growing up in The Tech Tips Man's Jank House though.
that look when “why cut when you can manage” really gave me more confidence about my lack of circumcision
lack of circumcision isnt weird its not supposed to be cut
I had a sick build in 05 with an amd fx55, Radeon x800xl, 4g Corsair XMS pro ddr400, DFI lanparty mobo, RAID setup. Miss that puppy
What I learned from this: Yvonne and her parents are amazing people and deserve everything in the world
World's most patient in-laws.
@@greanhare5270 it really did pay off for them at the end though. I need to start being more patient myself
This is an odd thought, maybe it's because of the kind of headspace that I'm in right now, but seeing this video made me think of that the only thing I wished I had that Linus does is someone who loves and supports him as much as Yvonne does. It's actually amazing. She's amazing.
A woman like that is top tier and quite rare. Anyone can find someone who loves them, but that level of almost unconditional support is extremely rare. Most women might have said “babe this is a bad idea. Just get a job”.
Don't give up hope. Walk tall, smile, and be your genuine self. Be brave when you attempt to approach and introduce yourself. "getting someone's number" is nearly impossible nowadays as far as a genuine approach is concerned, start small and ask for their social media profiles. You got this.💝
@@jon5470 My genuine self is an asshole with social anxiety. 💀
my man not that long ago I was feeling the exact same way.... but i've found my "yvonne" and it's been 1,5 years now. You'll find yours too ;)
Don't undercut Linus's efforts, she isn't with him just because PC. He's actually a dedicated guy to his girl and puts her on a pedastal.
I like that MB at 18:00, because my first ever gaming PC had a Asus P5W, with a Core Duo E8400, a 9800GTX+ and 3GB of Ram. This thing was a neat machine back then and it could run Crysis! And it had the same blue box you see at 20:15, with red and blue neon lights. xD
Alright, whoever wrote that transition to the sponsor point about the display deserves a freaking raise. That was CLEAN.
nah it was a pain in the ass
You can tell it was NOT Dennis because there was no naked Linus.
Jake is a perfect example that if you care enough about an industry and you work to build your knowledge then age is no longer a factor
We gonna ignore that clearly the second “desk” around the 25 minute mark is clearly a dresser that the drawers had been taken out of I love that so much
Not finished yet but I still use those z680S! Also had the same motherboard in my first dedicated gpu (5900!) rig also in a chieftec "style" case with UV sleeved cables and ide cables. Later on I got one of those card coolers for a 6800 (I think) and somehow still have one new in the package as well.... The logitech mx duo was a great set at the time for me too. Geez we had a lot of the same stuff. Same msi socket 939 board I still have...
I would love to see you guys do a modern UV build. They look so cool!
12:49 sounded like an audio error lol
This is why i love watching LTT, Amazing to see the more personal side of Linus too of him sharing with us his memories from back in the day,The chill vibes in this upload are just the best.
*Chiller vibes.
Linus: “No No! He’s dead.”
Luke: “Oh!”
Jake: “Oh!”
Rest in Peace.
