  • Duramaxtuner's Nick Priegnitz explains why high horsepower trucks need upgraded exhaust components - downpipe, up-pipes, and manifolds. The factory parts trend to restrict airflow due to their design. But the aftermarket parts improve airflow to the engine and the elimination of exhaust - a critical need because high horsepower increases drive pressure and the movement of both air and exhaust. These bolt-ons lower engine gas temperatures, improve turbo spool-up and driveability.

I"m looking to get your exhaust manifolds and up pipes and have been watching your videos great stuff by the way. You mention that the factory bellow on the up pipes is a weak point which is exactly where my issue has been. I see that you have a beefier up pipe but still retain the factory design with a bellow, will this be an issue in the future as they are prone to blow out there? I've noticed others make a solid pipe all the way up, whats the difference? Still learning a lot about diesel tuning and love my duramax, any guidance would really help. thanks

I had the same issues, when i installed my ppe manifolds, up, and downpipe. I write ppe, and they answer: dangle the downpipe with a hammer, until it don't contact the uppipes. That's high quality - made in usa 😑. Than i order the flo-pro downpipe, it was better, but i also have to deform it to fitment. For reserve i had a mbrp downpipe at home. Butni don't know if this fit better, it's hard to get them pipes in and out, once istalled the flo-pro i wouldn't get it out to try the mbrp.

I have a 2013 GMC with the 6.6 Duramax with 145,000 miles on it. It is still stock except for the exhaust which has been deleted. I am very concerned about the CP 4 injection pump. If I add a lift pump (FASS) will the CP 4 pump still be a reliability problem with this motor? Will this keep me from having to repalce the CP 3 pump with a CP 4 as this loos to be a pretty extensive procedure to perform. I am 64 years old and had to retire on disability due to having to have the whole lower part of my back fused together with rods and screws. I am not as flexible as I once was and have pain from moderate to extreme depending on what I am doing. I bought the truck in 2015 with 23,000 miles on it before I knew the CP 4 pump was a reliability factor. Due to being retired, I wanted something to last as long as possible. I run Amsoil Signature 15w-40 in the motor, Wix filters in all locations, and add Amsoil fuel treatment in the fuel at every fill up. I try to buy all of my fuel at the same station (Murphy Gas) unless I am traveling...which is frequently. The only thing I have pulled with this truck is my 20 foot bass boat which is usually less than 20 miles round trip, however I do work with the local High School and pull my boat once or twice a month to various lakes throughout the state of Georgia and South Carolina. This June I will be pulling my boat on a 3000 mile venture (from Clark Hill Lake on the Ga./SC border to Lacrosse, Wisconsin) for the High School team to fish in the Nationals. Thanks for all your help and advice.

Great question! The first reason is that for emissions equipment to work you need heat in the exhaust. Larger up-pipes and manifolds will generally reduce heat in the exhaust. The next reason is the lack of benefits for an emission equipped 600 RWHP truck. Over 700 RWHP builds generally have the most to gain with up-pipes and manifolds.
