  • The variable vane turbocharger appeared in 2004.5 with the Duramax LLY and in subsequent years in the LBZ and LMM. The vanes control drive pressure and respond to the engine load. For example, if the engine is operating at low speed, the vane nozzles may be closed to generate enough pressure to keep the compressor wheel operating. If the engine is under a heavy load, the vanes open to increase drive pressure. Turbine braking is another feature of the variable vane turbocharger. The application of the brakes causes the vanes to close creating back pressure to reduce engine speed.

    I’m a diesel technician by trade and I’ve been through dozens of training and certification courses throughout my career. I still think nick does one of the best jobs explaining things so that everyone can comprehend what’s going on. Good job. Keep it up!

    Just curious because I had a V-band clamp break (turbo did not fully separate and damage luckily) but the turbo has about 1/16" to an 1/8" gap that I can see. Should it be closer together or will the new V-band compress it closer? Have not removed turbo hoping not to if not necessary. I was also thinking I could test the plunger for the vanes with turbo still attached with removing the cover and magnet process. Sorry if this is not allowed just curious and seen this video.

    Question, since the lly is the biggest factory turbo, would it make more power on a lmm than the stock lmm turbo? Asking because I bought a lmm truck with a lly turbo with a batmowheel, but in less words the turbo failed so I replaced it with a remained factory lmm turbo, of course I put a 6 blade billet wheel in it before installing, just wondering if it would be worth fixing the lly turbo and putting it back in. Thanks. also considering sending the lly turbo off to be built to the 64mm turbo and just selling the turbo I have.

    Do you need to upgrade the transmission with your stealth vvt?

    • @Duramaxtuner
      @Duramaxtuner  Před 6 lety

      It is not required to have a built transmission with the Stealth VVT. But you will want to consider an upgraded transmission when and if you decide to add fuel modifications to reach maximum horsepower like 640.

    Dependable, except for when my V band broke on my 2004 LLY. And locked it up while towing a 13000 lb fifth wheel. So far my parts bill at dealer cost is $2,700 due to all the broken bolts that refused to come out and having to replace all the necessary hoses buried in that death chamber to have to keep from going in there a second time. All because of a $55 V band

    how much HP can a LLY turbo support on a LBZ with all the supporting mods ?

    • @Duramaxtuner
      @Duramaxtuner  Před 3 lety

      Pushed to the limit, probably around 575rwhp. It would have a significantly shorter lifespan at that level. Long-term happiness is gone past 530rwhp.

    • @Levi-ou2bk
      @Levi-ou2bk Před 3 lety

      I would be happy with those numbers and the drivability of a turbo that small but what fails in the turbo when pushed that hard ?
