- Here's a great pallet upcycle idea for the garden! A very simple and quick garden project which can be undertaken with basic hand tools and minimal carpentry skills. Oh - and pretty much for free!!
These are great if you are short of room and just want a small, low maintenance garden, or even just to dress up a boring fence!

This is the best vertical pallet planter design I've seen. Everyone else did theirs without putting bottoms on each row and I didn't think that was practical. U nailed it. I will be using your design. Thank u.
Thanks Lady Tee! Let me know how you go đ
Nice simple DIY project, no need for measurements, fancy tools or complicated instructions!
This has to be the best âstarterâ DIY project on CZcams.
Thanks for some great feedback! â€
Thank you so much easiest, clearest instructions ever.
Can't wait to find myself some palettes.

Great idea sir, thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! đ
This is exactly what I need to do. Simple and not hard to do with no heavy duty tools. Love it. All I need now is to look for some free pallets. Thank you. I am glad I found you.
Many thanks Jennifer! Most large businesses usually are happy to give them away đ
Very Cool. Thanks very much for sharing this!
You are very welcome MSS đ
Thank you for this! So simple and sound compared to all other pallet diyâs Iâve seen!

Thanks! I have a nice crop of strawberries in this now! đđđđ
@@TheUltimateRecycler Oh wow.. that's smart so they will hang over!!!
Nice
Thanks kimuseni đ
Good Idea, I'm gonna build one for my strawberries
Excellent! đ
This is cool! Iâd use an oil as a preservative on the timber though, like butchers block or something similar. My Pa made me a balcony herb planter out of my old pallets (I now realise, 20 years later). He knocked out the middle 3 boards I think and then cut it in half leaving a board on either side at either end. Didnât he same thing with putting the bottom in and joined the halves together at the top of the side boards by using another piece the same as the bottom pieces leaving an open top to plant in which then sat over the backside by rail. It fit about 6 small pots total plus room for plants to climb over the long side pieces.
Did that make sense to anyone? It was like one pallet cut in half with all but the end boards knocked out. Some days I wish I could draw! đ
Haha.. it doesn't need to make sense if you were happy with it! đđ€Ł
My! I wish the pallets I got were as easy as yours to undo the nails!!
Yep, they certainly aren't all that easy! It does help if they haven't been wet..
Thanks for your comment đ
thank you !
You're welcome Peter đđ
Goin to build one soon

Great project mate! Just what I'm about to do myself! Burn em with a torch and that'll make em last longer the Japanese "Shou Sugi Ban" style.. makes em resistant to pests, rot, water and mould even fire proof weirdly enough as it changes the molecular structure of the wood...
(Just a tip)
Cheers from London England đđđŽó §ó ąó „ó źó §ó ż
That's interesting! Thanks for the tip mate! đđ
I just noticed that the one you made you put the bottoms flush and the one on the wall
had the bottoms on top of the wood which you could see and didn't look that good, is that
so you could get a bit more depth
You have an eye for detail Captain! The one on the wall was a prototype and was made before I did this video. It doesn't look as neat, but on the plus side the beds do hold more soil! đđ
@@TheUltimateRecycler Yes that's true I do have an eye for detail, the one on the wall doesn't look as good even though it will hold a bit more soil
Thanks for your kind sharing of your knowledge. I cannt do things like using a drill. Please give people like me (older)other easy ways to use our limited space around our homes to grow useful things!!đ
I'll try and come up with some ideas Lily. Thanks for your comment đ
My friend is 80 years old building a house by himself. Never say never. It's not as hard as you think especially once you get the hang of it
@@bbglas007 Absolutely! I had a great uncle who bought his first motorbike at 90! He never would have picked it up if it fell over - but he never let that stop him!
Thank u
Thanks Arthur! đđ
I do think a lining will keep the soil moist longer. The water doesn't seem in the wood (that much) and doesn't evaporate that easily. So less watering to do...
Yes Niels, good points! :)
Hi, thanks for this. do you drill drainage holes?
No need Debbie as the timber soaks up the moisture pretty quickly and it also seeps through the joins..
First video I'm watching. Very nice. Also nice way of presenting it. You should go into cricket commentating. Very calming voice, Sir
Haha, thanks Jeremy! And there's a nice deflection down to third man.. đ
If I did herbs like basil and rosemary etc, would I have to repot them later after the grow larger? Or will this be enough growth space for my herbs?
I'm not much of a gardener Sarah, but as those can grow quite large, you would probably need to either repot them or keep them well pruned đ
use a flat pry, it works great and reduces the possibility of broken pallet boards
Yep, I have one of those too - they are great! đ
nice! How did you add the âfloorsâ for the middle rows? Not sure how since the one you showed was on the end so you can nail into the top
Thanks đ The "floors" fit snuggly inside the side rails and then I just nailed through from each side. Alternatively you could use wider boards and just nail into the bottom of the side rails. Thanks for watching đ
Hello love this I am going to make it today - one question do we need to put holes in the bottom pieces for drainage as worried about over watering?
It wouldn't hurt to add a couple of drainage holes, but I find excess water usually drips from the joins in the timber anyways đ
@@TheUltimateRecycler thanks so much canât wait to get started
Fantastic idea and so easy. Question, can this be used with chemically treated pallets? Growing food in them isn't a problem if its treated pine pallets? Thanks
Most pallets these days are just heat treated (stamped HT) and are perfectly safe. I wouldn't use anything chemically treated. Thanks for watching đđ
@@TheUltimateRecycler ty for replying đ I'll definitely give this a try. Never used a power tool in my life, but You made it look easy enough for even me to give it a go.
@@b3autifullife You can do it!! đ
Wonderful ! I guess these are not soaked in Pestizides ? as the one are that we have here?
The pallets I used have only been heat treated and not soaked in any chemicals. You do need to be careful of that đ
Nice! Do you have to do anything for drainage??
No Sean, there are enough gaps in the wood joins to allow drainage. Thanks for watching đ
Question. Should I drill a few holes in the floor for drainage??
I found that the timber joints leaked enough that drainage wasn't a problem Ellen. If the timber was painted/sealed, you would probably need holes. Thanks for watching đ
Where can I find the mesh? Iâm not finding the fabric type on amazon. Help
What mesh are you after Maria? I don't line the pallet sections with any mesh - just put the dirt in and plant away! :)
What if I need drain holes? Should I attach some kind of tubing so water doesn't go into the one underneath or is that not an issue as long as they all have drain holes?
Depends on your climate Eric - I find that the little plots dry out quite quickly and drainage isn't an issue. In wet areas you could easily drill a few drain holes - but the timber tends to "leak" water through small gaps anyways đ
@@TheUltimateRecycler
oh ok that makes sense. I live in Florida and I was asking cause I'm wanting to plant a bunch of different varieties of mint on my patio and everyone says you need the drain holes for mint.
@@s7121n9s I don't know much about mint! It's certainly easy to drill a few holes through the timber anyway! Good luck with it! đđ
@@TheUltimateRecycler thank you sir
how long till it rots in on itself? I'd imaging you might get 5 years out of it though
Yes, eventually it's going to start falling apart. It will be interesting to see how many years it actually lasts - going on 3 now for my first one! đ
Would it be okay to paint the pallet before planting?
Fair question Donnella. Painting the outside would be fine but I don't think inside would be a good idea. Also, if you seal up all the gaps with paint, you would need to drill drainage holes so that the soil doesn't become waterlogged.
hi...aren't drainage holes needed ?
I guess it depends on your climate and rainfall. I find the beds dry out fairly quickly, especially in summer so drainage isn't a problem. In wet areas it would be easy to drill a few holes đ
@@TheUltimateRecycler thanks so much..........makes sense..........
Where do I find pallets?
Most larger businesses are usually happy to get rid of them Jayla
Kennards
how do i make pallets?
Just pick them up from larger businesses Kim - most are happy to have them gone! đ
Drainage ?
It drains fine Marilyn, the timber joins aren't water tight. Some small holes could be drilled if necessary..
Looks like you use an Aldi cordless drill.
Not quite Karl - it's a cheap Bunnings one.. but it does a pretty good job for the money :)
If you can't do it, you're really not trying hard enough! haha Pretty much
Exactly! đ
Hi
Hi Frankie! đđ
Unfortunately, people have got âwiseâ and itâs very hard to find free pallets... especially ones that are heat treated
Depends where you are I guess Trish - there are plenty of businesses around my area that seem to always have pallets stacked up for free.
Thanks for watching đ
Nice design, however:
1. Never use pallet wood to grow something edible. Pallet wood is chemically treated. The chemicals can leach intk the soil, into the plant, and you can get cancer.
2. With good wood, like cedar, if there is not a bottom gap, drill drain holes.
3. With woods, like cedar, its always a good idea to have a moisture barrier betseen soil and wood. This slows down wood rot.
Thanks for your comment Robert, but your information is inaccurate with pallets. Yes, they used to be chemically treated (mostly with Methyl Bromide - stamped MB)... but just about all pallets these days are just heat treated (stamped HT). So no chemical issues anymore.
@@TheUltimateRecycler how can you be sure your pallet isnât chemically treated? Also the pallet Iâm using has some spray paint marks from some point in its use. Assuming itâll be no good to use for edible plants? Thanks
