Very few pallets are treated with methyl bromide now - I think the overwhelming majority are safe to use. :-)

Great way to recycle an old pallet Ben , a great use of space and looks to be easily accessible. One tip if I may suggest while trying to dismantle the pallet for the excess panels. Try using a car wheel jack , it separates the timber so easily and less risk of hurting yourself. Hope this helps, keep up with the innovative ideas 👍

Always appreciate cheap gardening tricks. Pallets are a great way of getting free wood to build garden projects.
A while back we replaced our garden fence. We had a lot of leftover pieces when the larger planks were sawn, and some of the old planks were reusable. I've made 5 planter boxes from it. Because they are the same heigth as the fence planks they fit in nicely hanging on the fence.

top tip, use a scissor car jack along with an electric drill between the pallet planks to dismantle the

I wanted to mention my experience with sorrell: it requires constant cool moisture around the roots and is sensitive to Mediterranean sun. Anyway, I've discovered the best way to grow it and watch it look gorgeous- grow it in an indoor fountain! Not yummy for me, but great ornamental :) Ben, if you could create a video about birdbaths, fountains, or any water element, I would be over the moon! It's really turbo boosted my love for gardening and I'm sure it would bring joy and inspiration to others as well! Thank you for reading. I hope you have a glorious day in your spring garden!

Thank you for all your videos! I just made some garden beds out of pallets for onions and garlic and I used old bed sheets to create the pockets. It’s just a temporary solution til we’ve finished renovating inside and can start outside but it should last for a year or two!

I got living herbs from a video of yours awhile back and am so surprised how well they are doing! I had a shop who was selling micro greens too so I got micro greens celery and I got Parsley and since being repotted their doing great x

Rather than clipping off the ends of the nails... you can hammer them through enough to grab with the claw part of the hammer and remove them, that way you can reuse them to join the wood back together. It's also hand to have a nice solid length of wood and a board that you can place near the panel you are trying to remove. By putting the board parallel and resting the lever arm of the length of wood on your loose board and the other end under the board you are trying to remove you should be able to pry it off reasonably intact.

Very charming! How would I prevent the chalk markings from being washed away in the rain?
I've used a chalk pen, which doesn't seem to wash off in the rain so easily.
Make sure any staples or nails are stainless steel as they will get wet and rust, especially important if you are in a coastal area.
I have my firewood delivered on pallets so have a few available after the winter! The company I buy from asked me why don't I buy kindling from them I told them that they supply it for free, in pallet form.👍
Good point - pallets can be turned to so many uses Richard - even keeping you warm!
Misconception about methyl bromide, it is used on pallets for pest control but usually only in a situation where an untreated pallet has come into contact with treated ones in a container or likewise. The container is then flooded with methyl bromide to decontaminate it and the pallets stamped to say so. The methyl bromide is only active for 48 hours or will disperse once aerated. You can use the pallets they are completely safe

Membrane the bottom and side. Loads of staples
Then...
Horizontally, stand upright and fill will growing medium
Grow out of the front with loads of herbs, berry’s even small veg like radish
I do like the labelling though ....
I’ve still paint from my kids wall chalkboard ...
Also ....... get a big crow bar. It will change your world with pallets
Definitely need a bigger crow bar!
Just a tip if you asking for pallets ask for a heat treated euro pallets thay are bigger and stronger

It will certainly attract bees and probably a few wasps. But these are all natural visitors that are about anyhow and a welcome part of any healthy garden.

Great idea , however on a practical basis it may be easier to paint the extra slats and the pallet before assembly as I have found that it is difficult to get the paint into all of these wee gaps in pallets ?

I got it from a local hardware store where it's sold on a roll - you just cut what you need. But you're looking for something like Mypex to make the pockets.

Brilliant. I have a couple of pallets waiting to be put to use. A question (if I may) ….. I read gooseberries and raspberries are bad companions. How far apart should they be planted in a fruit cage?
Hi Morag. I haven't heard this myself. I can't see why they'd be bad companions so long as they had enough space to reach their full potential. I would suggest maybe leaving at least a metre or so (3+ft) between a gooseberry bush and raspberry canes to give each enough room.

It would work for strawberries, yes. Several people have suggested this. I think they'd do really well for at least one summer.

Hi Ben, I have a question for you... Do you have any advice on how to get rid of ivy growing in raised beds? I've discovered it growing throughout and I'm quite discouraged! Thank you for your many jargon free tips, they have improved my gardening by tons :) Any help from other commenters would be very welcome too!
Hi Natasha. The best way to tackle ivy I have found is to simply dig it up, following the trailing stems and roots back to their source. It's a bit of hard graft but you can get on top of it eventually. Alternatively you could try smothering the ivy for several months to exclude light so that it eventually runs out of resources and dies. Several layers of plain brown cardboard could work for this, perhaps topped up with wood chips so it's less unsightly. I conquered an area of ivy and other weeds like this last year.

I would say full sun in most climates, but keep an eye on watering as a result.
I lost my mind when I was 7 months pregnant and someone stole one of my pallets from my front garden in the night. ALWAYS ask. I was catastrophising about my baby being unsafe (over the top but it happened) because someone, who probably thought they were helping to tidy my yard, didn't ask. I now store spare pallets waiting for projects behind the garage.

I used a chalk pen, which seems to be harder wearing than just chalk. In both cases easily reapplied should it wash off or get feint.

I was wondering what to do about drainage for the herbs so the herbs don’t rot. Do you poke holes in the landscaping fabric?
I find they drain through okay, but you could certainly poke holes into the bottom to be on the safe side and make sure it drains through without delay. :-)
Is tannalised wood ok to use in raised beds ?
I would avoid it for use with raised beds, as the chemicals could end up tainting the crops grown within in.
Random question lol, will baking soda help get rid of bacterial leaf blight on my carrots?

Where did you get the fabric from? I've bought some and it frays badly.
The fabric I use was from my local garden centre, sold by the metre. It's called Mypex though - that's the brand.
