    In this video I show you how to turn two old pallets & some shade cloth into a productive vertical garden that will have you growing herbs and salad greens on your balcony, porch or small courtyard in less than a day!
    This is a great, low cost, low space solution to growing more at home, even if you've only got a small space to work with. It's also so easy that anyone can do it!

    Please Read: If you are going to make a pallet garden for growing food you need to make sure the pallets you are using have not been treated with pesticides like Methyl Bromide. Heat treated pallets are fine.

      And use natural sealers and not paint that contains chemicals that can leech into the soil as well...

    Couldn't put my finger on what was not quite correct about this? Having got some paletts I now know what it is. Yours has 3 solid beams that the boards are nailed on too. All mine and all I have seen for years are wood saving paletts. These have 3 small blocks of wood, one top, one middle, one bottom with a board running from top to bottom on two sides of the blocks and thus saving on wood. Many thanks.

    • @TheBiteSizedGarden
      @TheBiteSizedGarden  Před 2 lety

      You’re right. Many are made that way. These ones had bricks on them. All the ones I’ve seen with bricks on them have the timber struts for added strength. Might be different where you are though?

      Glad you found it useful. I have a single pallet one that works okay for succulents but the double width would definitely be better if you want to grow flowers, herbs or veggies as they'll need more soil/water.

    We can get free pallets from our hardware store, and some are taking these free pallets and selling them for $5.00. I have a stack of them, so far I have made a workbench, a deep sink cabinet. I hope to make an outside sink cabinet and I hope to replace the metal cabinets in the damp cellar, turning to rust, with the wooden pallet shelving from floor to ceiling. But, I am having a difficult time finding this project on YT, so I may have to 'wing' it.

      As you may have guessed, I do like a good composting system and want to encourage more people to do it so yes, definitely. It might take me a little while though - things are a little crazy here at the moment and I don't have as much time as I'd like to put into making and editing videos. It's something I want to do soon though.

    hi. two questions. what is the name of the lining? what type of paint did you use?

    • @TheBiteSizedGarden
      @TheBiteSizedGarden  Před 3 lety

      Hi Chantel, I used some shade cloth as the lining but you could use weed matting or anything like that, it just need to be able to drain from the bottom. If you're not sure about the treatment on the timber you might also want to put some black plastic on the inside of the wood. Paint wise, it was just some left over decking paint. Any exterior paint should be okay.

    How are you able to use the screwdriver and hammer to take apart the planks of wood without breaking them? I've been trying but the planks keep breaking :(

    • @TheBiteSizedGarden
      @TheBiteSizedGarden  Před 3 lety

      I did lose a couple to breakage as well, but mostly the timber was fairly strong. You may need to try something with a wider, flatter surface like a cold chisel?

    Can you list the slow release fertilizer and straw like medium you used?

    • @TheBiteSizedGarden
      @TheBiteSizedGarden  Před 2 lety

      Hi Paula, the straw was sugar cane mulch and the fertilizer was a slow release for pots or indoor plants.

    Did you make your own worm casting system

    • @TheBiteSizedGarden
      @TheBiteSizedGarden  Před 3 lety

      Of sorts. I actually have a three stage composting system, Bokashi first, that goes into standard compost bins with leaves, shredded paper and sawdust, and then when it's time to turn I use some of the partially broken down compost in the worm farm.

    • @TheBiteSizedGarden
      @TheBiteSizedGarden  Před 3 lety +1

      That's right, some are treated, you do need to be careful. If you don't know the origin of the pallet and are concerned about the treatment you can try lining them with black plastic or sitting pots in the frame instead.
