  • With the recent increase in cost of timber it's good to see that free wooden pallets are still readily available. Watch me as I make a modern planter with a vertical 'green' back.

    I love you & your channel. My Dad did construction and masonry work his entire life and I so regret not paying more attention to what he did and learning everything I possibly could. I did pick up a few tips here & there but no where near the plethora of knowledge and expertise he could have passed on to me. My elementary school he actually helped to build. I remember going there with my Mom during construction and TBE different colors of cinder blocks in the walls. I was proud my Dad helped put them there. Then 40 years later my daughter attended that very same school & knew the grandfather she never knew had helped build her school. You explain everything so completely & patiently. Thank you for teaching me some of the things that I never learned how to do from my Dad when he was alive. I look forward to watching more of your videos and to continue learning. Your wife is lucky to have a husband that is so handy. My husband isn't a handyman by any means and after growing up with my Dad I sometimes have a hard time when he doesn't know how to or even have the desire to fix or build something. I'm the one that fights to watch all the DIY and home improvement videos and shows while he wants to watch movies...lol. Maybe some day I'll covert him. Don't even get me started on our differences in lawn and gardening...haha. Thank you again for all you do and my God Bless you and your family.

    Use sticks and branches for the bottom of the planter it becomes a mini hugelkultur bed and you won't have to water it as often and you need a lot less compost to fill it. Hope this helps

    I find a garden fork very useful to get pallets apart, very easy to lever of the slats. Also check out hugelkultur and fill these large planters with some logs or similar. Creates a good enviromental soil for plants and will continue to feed them as they rot down.

    I filled up the van yesterday at the builders merchants. I bought a Roughneck pallet buster a while back. It really does make life easier. Nails can be a problem with some pallets. They really resist being pulled out. I find an old fashioned pair of pincers works wonders for those rather than a claw hammer or pry bar.
    Nice planter though.

    Another option instead of the polystyrene on the bottom would be to make it a self watering planter by adding a waterproof barrier at the bottom, filling the bottom with stones and adding a drainage hole above the intended water line, as well as a barrier between the water line and the soil above to control how much moisture is wicked up.

    Word of warning for pallets. The last pallet I disassembled a huge splinter flew off and hit me in the eye, luckily I wear glasses anyway so no problem, but from then on.. safety specs for everything. You just never know when something will happen and that's the point of PPE.

    To split the pallet apart take the outer segments off then upend apply press from one side to another so instead of pulling the nails out by force the movement back and fourth loosens the nails.

    Another great vid Stuart. I’m stuck inside on a very rainy Sunday here in Cambridge, frustrated I can’t crack on with my current project of installing iron fence and sliding gates for our front drive (foundation stage and hand mixing concrete in pouring rain isn’t much fun…). Working through all your vids instead at least let’s me do some diy vicariously! You’ve mentioned a few times now about sourcing timber from the delivery point at the big box stores eg their offcuts. Is it really as simple as just walking up to them and asking if they’ve got any waste you can rummage through? Timber/insulation/upvc products all crazy prices since two years ago so any savings would be good!

    • @ProperDIY
      @ProperDIY  Před 2 lety

      I know the feeling, I have a fallen fence to fix but I'm not working in this rain!
      The free timber I get is from B&Q just passed the tills. There is usually a bin with a charity box which you donate to and take what you want. Sometimes there is nothing, sometimes there is but I always go there with a cordless circular saw just in case (the bigger pieces tend to get left as people can't get them in the car!) If you see a B&Q in East Anglia with sawdust in a quiet part of the car park - that would have been me!

      @@ProperDIY hopefully not the fence you reinforced the posts for last year?! I’m usually at either a BQ or Wickes several times a month so will keep a look out for the offcuts - thanks for the tip.
