- With the recent increase in cost of timber it's good to see that free wooden pallets are still readily available. Watch me as I make a modern planter with a vertical 'green' back.

I love you & your channel. My Dad did construction and masonry work his entire life and I so regret not paying more attention to what he did and learning everything I possibly could. I did pick up a few tips here & there but no where near the plethora of knowledge and expertise he could have passed on to me. My elementary school he actually helped to build. I remember going there with my Mom during construction and TBE different colors of cinder blocks in the walls. I was proud my Dad helped put them there. Then 40 years later my daughter attended that very same school & knew the grandfather she never knew had helped build her school. You explain everything so completely & patiently. Thank you for teaching me some of the things that I never learned how to do from my Dad when he was alive. I look forward to watching more of your videos and to continue learning. Your wife is lucky to have a husband that is so handy. My husband isn't a handyman by any means and after growing up with my Dad I sometimes have a hard time when he doesn't know how to or even have the desire to fix or build something. I'm the one that fights to watch all the DIY and home improvement videos and shows while he wants to watch movies...lol. Maybe some day I'll covert him. Don't even get me started on our differences in lawn and gardening...haha. Thank you again for all you do and my God Bless you and your family.
Use sticks and branches for the bottom of the planter it becomes a mini hugelkultur bed and you won't have to water it as often and you need a lot less compost to fill it. Hope this helps
The channel just gets better and better, well done for the great ideas and excellent delivery of the instructions you give
Well thank you very much - I try!
@@ProperDIY Your garden is MASSIVE. Not like the rest of us.
Weekend is off to a fab start - a new vid from Stuart!!!! YEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!
Thank you. Have a good weekend
Brilliant, as always. I've now officially finished watching ask the videos on your channel - keep the content coming!
Thanks, will do!
I haven't even watched this but I already know I'm gonna love it!
I hope you did like it afterwards
Yes I did! I'm going to be trying this myself now. Proper Inspiration! Love your channel!
@@kevinlove2433 Thanks!
Great project! Nice work Stuart! Love free stuff 👍
You and me both!
Looks great mate the green against the grey ❤️❤️
It does - thanks!
I find a garden fork very useful to get pallets apart, very easy to lever of the slats. Also check out hugelkultur and fill these large planters with some logs or similar. Creates a good enviromental soil for plants and will continue to feed them as they rot down.
That's a good idea
I save larger branches and trimmings exactly for this. Every couple of years, it's worth tipping out raised veg beds and refilling with new compost over a layer of logs and branches
Nice job as always!!! Thanks for sharing
Thank you
I filled up the van yesterday at the builders merchants. I bought a Roughneck pallet buster a while back. It really does make life easier. Nails can be a problem with some pallets. They really resist being pulled out. I find an old fashioned pair of pincers works wonders for those rather than a claw hammer or pry bar.
Nice planter though.
Thank you. The pallet buster looks a great piece of kit if you are dealing with them everyday
Way better content, advice and presentation than any DIY programs on TV . I built some planters of your design from a previous video of yours, turned out great and the Mrs is chuffed, bonus. More videos please Stuart 👍
I'm so glad. If the BBC want to give me my own show I would give it a go
@@ProperDIY no worries but if MSM give you your own program please don’t let them commercialise you and ruin your down to earth presentation and content 👍
Stuart's chanel really is a staple for me now, every Friday lunchtime I'm like...... "Well come on, what we doin this week!"
Good job as usual, now back to constructing me work bench...
Thank you
I enjoy your video's and there relaxing also your sense of humour.keep up the good work as honestly I cannot fault any of them nice one.
Brilliant looks good
Thank you
That is brilliant! And I always learn / pick up something from your videos.
Glad to hear it!
Well done, good to see you have sponsorship now as well!
Yes, 1st one so good to see that others have noticed
Quickly becoming one of my favourite youtube channels excellent content
Well thank you very much!
Great video, I really like the intro editing & music 👍
Thank you. That's my aim
Looks great 👍
Thanks
Great videos like a DIY TV programme!
Good- that's the plan
CZcams is the new TV :)
Awesome design, I would keep it all natural materials. Definitely omit the Styrofoam as it is plastic. Possible fill the space with natural wood creates or nail wood slates up higher at the bottom so that it requires less dirt/compost.
Thank you for the awesome tutorial!
Not too dusty. Looks good when planted up.
Thank you
Great video and good to see you were sponsored. Fab work 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you - yes first time
Hi. Wow, looks really good. Great idea to. Will try that one to. Cheers!🙂👌👍
Thank you
You have a wealth of experience and I am going to gain from your experience, thankyou. 🍀🇨🇮
Good
Great vid. I might do a slimline one to hang on the wall.
Nice
Use scissor car jack to remove sections of pallet if not got large steel bar
Another option instead of the polystyrene on the bottom would be to make it a self watering planter by adding a waterproof barrier at the bottom, filling the bottom with stones and adding a drainage hole above the intended water line, as well as a barrier between the water line and the soil above to control how much moisture is wicked up.
Bring a bit of a cripple I buy pallet lattes from a guy who does all the hard work of taking them apart. I have just bought some "urban slate" cuprinol for future projects as I really like that colour.
Great video as always.
Good stuff - breaking up the pallet was the most difficult bit
Word of warning for pallets. The last pallet I disassembled a huge splinter flew off and hit me in the eye, luckily I wear glasses anyway so no problem, but from then on.. safety specs for everything. You just never know when something will happen and that's the point of PPE.
You're right. You'll notice the glasses I'm wearing in the video are tinted safety glasses not sunglasses.
Nice work big fella. From your convict cousin down under👍😉
Much appreciated
Looking 👍
Thanks
Big Red has found his forever home 😄
Exactly. I could have done a David Attenborough in this
What paint/treatment was used?
To split the pallet apart take the outer segments off then upend apply press from one side to another so instead of pulling the nails out by force the movement back and fourth loosens the nails.
Good tip
Another great vid Stuart. I’m stuck inside on a very rainy Sunday here in Cambridge, frustrated I can’t crack on with my current project of installing iron fence and sliding gates for our front drive (foundation stage and hand mixing concrete in pouring rain isn’t much fun…). Working through all your vids instead at least let’s me do some diy vicariously! You’ve mentioned a few times now about sourcing timber from the delivery point at the big box stores eg their offcuts. Is it really as simple as just walking up to them and asking if they’ve got any waste you can rummage through? Timber/insulation/upvc products all crazy prices since two years ago so any savings would be good!
I know the feeling, I have a fallen fence to fix but I'm not working in this rain!
The free timber I get is from B&Q just passed the tills. There is usually a bin with a charity box which you donate to and take what you want. Sometimes there is nothing, sometimes there is but I always go there with a cordless circular saw just in case (the bigger pieces tend to get left as people can't get them in the car!) If you see a B&Q in East Anglia with sawdust in a quiet part of the car park - that would have been me!
@@ProperDIY hopefully not the fence you reinforced the posts for last year?! I’m usually at either a BQ or Wickes several times a month so will keep a look out for the offcuts - thanks for the tip.
Only just found this channel, there is some really good videos. Loved the idea with polyester to fill up the planter! The only question I have is my girlfriend says the planter is grey and I say it is blue.. please tell me I am right and not going colour blind
Thanks. Sorry to say your girlfriend is right. The paint I used is called Urban Grey from Cuprinol Garden Shades line.
I see you went for the Chernobyl look! 🔥
👍
How did you hang it on wall ??
I didn't, it's free standing with the vertical pallet sitting (and screwed) on the rear of the bottom one.
What was that song called ???
Sorry, not sure if you mentioned it, is that a pallet?
It's a Pallet!
Where is a good place to get free pallets, assuming you don't have bulk deliveries?
Industrial estates, big DIY stores at their delivery point, Facebook Market place
Shhhh!
Nice job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Don't you have to be careful with certain pallets that might be chemically treated?
Some are chemically treated. However, if they are what is the worst that will happen - my plants after a summer die?
bad skin rash
It's a pallet? It's a puppet!
Showed the daughter mistake no1 when will you make me one no2 well use the pallets in the garden at her mates so off we’ll be going for them then it’ll be can we call and get the plants from the nursery I’m sometimes my own worst enemy but a great idea looks well 👍👨🏻🏭
Thanks, I'm sorry for giving you and your family the ideas!
instead of styrofoam make a diy self self watering system. easy. sheep and uses lot less water and give better plants
They do different things - the polystyrene helps use less compost - saving money and a self watering system keeps them watered!?!?
@@ProperDIY mean that the self water system do both, and dependent on materiel used almost same money.
Why are they so hard to take apart? I gave up when I tried!
Ring shank nails - very tough
@@ProperDIY ahh so they have lines of rings down the shaft of the nail?
Lol
