  • It's going to take longer than you thought, but it will be worth it in the end.
By the first week of March 2020 the world was entrenched in a pandemic. What began with such excitement for Ryan Holiday and his wife Samantha ended up taking much longer and costing way more than they had expected. In this video Ryan breaks down the 12 most important lessons that he's taken away from the first year being in business.

I love the "Have conversations with the dead" section. I'm constantly emphasizing to my teenage son that books are the accumulated wisdom of (sometimes) the entire lifetime of a person. We have to make mistakes and continuously course-correct in an attempt to master our lives. To have a lifetime of wisdom available to us in a few hundred pages is a blessing.

My friend & I started a mental health/special needs bookstore because we saw people struggling. Many doubters thought we'd fail but I knew one thing: You can't fail at life. Our bookstore, Odin Books celebrated its 30th year. People need guidance, & how to weather adversity. I,'m so happy I found your channel. Now I want to read your books. After starting my business, the “do it your way” rings SO true. I think there is so much information and influencers out there that it gets easy to keep chasing the new thing or new way to do something. Customers really appreciate and are drawn to a business doing it their own way. It also keeps me happy and doing exactly what I want to be doing.

"These people don't really know what they're talking about." Aha. This is starting to zero in on the main lessons of my life. The two biggest mistakes in my life are 1) Spending too much time taking advice from so-called experts, and 2) As an outgrowth of the first, giving up to early on ventures because other people talked me out of them or I got discouraged because success did not come quickly enough.
People don't really know what they're talking about. For sure.

Love the Tim Ferriss advice about starting a business "do it as an experiment" - brilliant!!! As you said, it is very freeing. It removes the idea that if it doesn't work out long term then it would be a failure. Starting a business as an experiment allows you to learn from the experience and then decide if you want to continue it. If you do great! If you don't, you will take the knowledge gained and apply it to your next venture.

I wish I did not live so far away-Perth Western Australia.
Your stack of books is just like a similar bookshop in Venice, Italy!
“Money is the root of all evil” is a misquote!
The quote should be, “The LOVE of money is to root of all evil”.
Having money is not evil, but chasing money for the sake of money is the evil pursuit!
    Good luck with your venture.

This has been inspiring and enlightening. I am planning to move to a new city soon, and the neighborhood I have my eyes on has no used bookstore anywhere nearby. It put the brain worm in my head that maybe I could be the one to bring one to the community.
I know it's not a highly profitable business, but that's not the reason I want to do it. I want to entrench myself into my new community and provide a valuable service. And used bookstores are one of my favorite places to be.
Listening to this has given me a boost of confidence, so thank you.

We're so fortunate that these life changing habits and ideas of Stoicism have survived the passage of time for thousands of years. Civilization may change in all kinds of ways for many more millennia, but the Stoic ideals and concepts are permanent and essential.

We bought a bookstore in spring of 2020.. everything was finalized right as the pandemic started. We tried to buy the building as well and before we could settle the upstairs tenant flooded her kitchen and destroyed half of our store and refused to move out to keep the sale from happening. we found a new location and opened about 7 months later. but now the building has sold and it seems the landlord wants to raise our rent drastically. fingers crossed we can find a new location. We never expected to renovate 3 stores in 3 years..

Ryan, I've been enjoying your videos for the last couple of weeks, and I was a little surprised to hear you are in Bastrop. I grew up in Central Texas and went to UT. I took a lot of philosophy courses but didn't read the Stoics as much as I probably should have, being enamored, at the time, with Exisitentialism then later Deconstruction. The last year has been quite hard, and I've found Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus helpful. Keep posting your videos and good luck with the bookstore. The store, by the way, looks beautiful. I'll visit it next time I'm in Texas.

Talk with the dead..... When my oldest son was 18 (he is 39 now) he said to me ;"Dad, I just realize that all of your friends are either dead or you have never met them."
He was talking about all of the books and pictures I had around the house of Mandela or Gandhi, or Bob Marley or Jiddu Krishnamurti or Meditations and a host of others..... The dead and unmet have guided me my whole life. I think I'll be looking for your store on my next cross country trip from Massachusetts
I just quit my teaching job after 27 years as I struggled with the direction of education and have started a youtube channel of my own to help teachers make connection with students. You should make a huge Marcus Aurelius bust out of books next, would looks awesome. Maybe difficult but i guess he’s your biggest idol and I just wanted to share my idea with you because I wish you all the best. thanks for your great words. You are living stoicism at its fullest. I love you ❤️ greetings from Vienna
