Hello Paola, I laughed out loud when you talked about the challenge of working in a bookshop. I had a job doing that in our tiny country town when I had my first child, 23 years ago. The owner wanted Saturdays off and I was her best customer so I got offered a job. Yes, you guessed it. I basically spent my small wages on books, and then some. One thing occurred when I worked there. A local woman walked in and browsed for a while and then said to me "Why would anyone pay $12 for a children's book?" Oh, my heart broke right there and I realised why I had trouble fitting in to the local Mum's Group. They didn't value books, reading and the need to read to their children. I wanted to share with you that since raising my toddler granddaughter, I have decided to go back to uni. Next year I start a Masters of Education in Teacher Librarianship, as my passion for literature and for literacy in children has not diminished. Your bookstore was swoon worthy. @@Archonsx Most cities are inevitably filled with the overwhelming hustle and bustle of everyday life commonly due to the âhustleâ/âgo-getterâ mentality which is typically not an ideal environment for those who want to live simpler, quieter lives. Not to mention higher crime rates, higher cost of living, lower employment rates, noise pollution, light pollution, lack of nature, etc. that cities usually have. The city can definitely be stressful and exhausting for a myriad of reasons.
@@kurlykpopfan8111 I agree with most of what you said except employment rate. There are far more job opportunities and employment in the city. Itâs a huge part of why people are willing to tolerate the city, an opportunity for work. Almost all over the U.S, places outside of cities are rampant with unemployment and desperation.
I'm so very jealous of being able to work in a book store! I would absolutely love to be able to do that. Even as just a part-time job for minimum wage. Sadly, such stores hardly even exist anymore. Enjoy and appreciate the opportunity.

Here, in Huntington Beach, Orange County, Southern California, there is a very small book shop that caters only to Mystery fans, and will be closing their doors in less than a year. Other than that, the only option is a Barnes & Noble (yuck!). There used to be 4 used book stores in HB alone, now there's basically nothing. So sad. Up in the greater LA area, which has a much higher population (and fewer hillbillies!), there are still some very nice stores. But overall, the physical, handheld book is going the way of the dinosaur.

Last week I saw a film about the life of Beatrix Potter, whose books you love too. I myself live in Berlin, a noisy and completely overcrowded city in Germany. I've daydreamed about working in a bookshop. :) Instead, as a homemaker and homeschool mama, I'm amassing our own home library, with plans for future floor-to-ceiling bookcases. And yes, while I buy countless children's books for my little ones, I secretly know they're just as much for me. ;)

Homeschooling Mama, you are wonderful! You are creating such special emotional connections for your children to books, reading and to reading with you. This will make a real difference in their lives and you gave them that gift. My children are grown adults now but they have seen me reading some of their favourites to our toddler granddaughter and they always stop, sit and listen. What an extremely lovely video. I sat here with pen in hand writing down the books you recommended. My heart began to race with anticipation. I didnât want to miss the name, Title, or Author. At almost 66 years old, my mind and imagination take me right back to my early childhood, learning to read and spending countless hours sitting at a small table in our public library (which we lived very close to). My neighbor was librarian so my parents felt I was safe to spend hour after hour there and when Iâd been gone past time to check in, they knew exactly where Iâd be. đ. I learned so many valuable lessons by my love for reading, made friends with so many trusted animals and friends, and could travel anywhere through the opportunity afforded to me through books. â€ïž. And w/o a career, we hesitate to answer the question: What do you do? I don't have friends b/c I now live on disability and meeting new people involves giving up that miserable fact. I've come to terms with almost every unpleasantness, including eventual death, but _not_ that of forfeiting a career.

Finally someone who feels the same about stories written for children. I love love LOVE watching children's series and shows because they convey so much meaning, truth and beauty in a way that is easily accessable, without much drama. Maybe I should take your advice and not only watch stuff "made for children" but also read children's books.

You are my kind of person. It is rare to find someone like me. I used to just read self help books, which I still enjoy, but I had wondered if I was missing out on the novels. My husband said I was. He is an avid reader and author or two books, volume one and two. He has several others he is working on. So your video has enlightened me and helps me. I wrote a list of all those books you mentioned and yes I know what you mean about the whimsical and wholesomeness you get from children's books. I like those too.

I could listen to you talk about books all day! I had no idea that Hilda was originally a graphic novel, so Iâm going to read that! Also, âThe City of Dreaming of Booksâ is one of my favorites. The Walter Moers Zamonia world is so interesting. If you havenât yet, you should look into âThe 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebearâ and âRumoâ. Theyâre so great!
I remember in high school French class, our teacher had us read childrenâs books to get us familiar with reading French in a story rather than just a series of nouns and verbs to conjugate in class. There is one I have looked for ever since. Itâs called âPearlette, Goute dâEauâ. Itâs the story of a drop of water and the illustrations were beautiful. The little drop of water had adventures. She was carried in a stream, evaporated into the clouds, and returned as rain. Lovely. I took that class fifty years ago but the book is still in my memory.

Hello Paola, while recovering from surgery I discovered your delightful, enchanting channel. With this offering I jotted down most titles for purchase. Sharing some with my two daughters. Although I am 75 I still enjoy childrenâs books. I raised my three children reading to them from the cradle, doing it for hours impersonating all the characters with their own voices. I was a story telling mom in grade school. Writing childrenâs books is the hallmark of a truly great author. One has to be really good at their craft to hold a childâs attention. I just started working again ( stay-at-home /homeschool mom here) and even though I am working as a hostess again ( like I did when I was a teen đł) for a local restaurant. I just wanted something for the weekend to get me out and to help with the ever rising bills. At first I felt silly as a 35 year old woman who went to college and is also a licensed massage therapist, going back to my first real job but I realized when I was there that it is so rewarding working for a family establishment. Most of my working experience has been with corporations and even as a hostess I feel like I have real value. I was just gonna do it until I could get my massage license for the new state I moved, but I actual feel pretty rewarded when I close up the restaurant at night. I think we think of age and labels so much and even though I hate it, I am horribly guilty and feel the need to constantly call myself out on those thoughts. We are not what we do, but how we do it. I have most of my working experience at a restaurant and even though my work experience has grown so much beyond my restaurant skills, I think all of the other jobs I have had, and they have actually helped me improve the skills I already had. Life is a strange journey. You never know where it will take you. đ

Bunnicula!! I read those to my sons when they were little boys! They loved Bunnicula! Now those little boys are in their fortiesâŠlol. Every night I read to them before bed. I spent at least forty five minutes reading to them and singing songs to them. I used to change the names in the books to their names sometimes and they suddenly became more involved in the storyâŠlol. I also made stories up right off the cuff that involved them. I called one of those stories Johnny and the chicken, and I made up all kinds of shenanigans for them. Reading is and always will be my favourite thing. Peace and love to you. đ

Growing up Books and music were my life. They saved me from reoccurring traumatic events in an alcoholic home. I just got done re-reading âMandyâ by Julie Andrews⊠I also just finished the âSerafinaâ series of well written books by a local author and found them real page turners. We each have to find what fills us, whether anyone else understands it or not. I recently married after 16 years of being alone on purpose to work through some damage done in my childhood. I found myself interesting and lovable despite what I was told repetitively growing up, Im quite amazing. So are you. Im so proud of you for doing what brings you joy and enhances your life. Bravo! You are such a lovely person and I relate to your peaceful spirit.

My ability to dream has waned over the last few years. As a pastor, writing and story-telling are two important aspects of my job and Iâve been struggling. As you were talking about reading childrenâs literature, I felt an excitement about reading that Iâve been missing. I read a lot as a child and my dreamland was vivid. The stories in childrenâs books are wonderful tools in helping people understand scriptural truths in a different way. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video and the suggestions. As a young only child I needed a way to escape and be comfortable so I turned to reading. When I was old enough I was able to use the library which was so exciting!

When you find a special book it is magical. There is nothing like curling up on a comfy chair and reading. You can be transported within the pages. Walking into a bookstore is such a cozy feeling. I'm so inspired and would love to one day own a little bookshop where people can come and nose around or drink a warm cup of tea or coffee, whilst soaking up all the wonderful stories written in the books! I'm nearly 50...so it may be a little late in life to have this dream, but who knows right? Miracles can happen as we all know.... As a little girl, I used to read in bed with my little flashlight guiding me through the pages of Nancy Drew's, Enid Blytons' and Roald Dahls' adventures. I remember being happiest in those days and I've noticed that since I've finally started reading again my life (especially in those moments) is full of joy and enjoyment again. What pleasure it brings! It feeds my soul and nourishes my fantasy in ways I had forgotten possible. I have been a quiet follower of your vlogs since the start and I admire your courage, vulnerability and the wisdom you share being so young still. I'm currently reading A Christmas Carol by Dickens. Generally I start it the day after Thanksgiving and it just makes Christmas time so special to me. Thank you for your video. Our oldest is a bookseller and he feels very similar to the way that you do about books.
Patti! I do the same but on 1 December as I am Australian and don't do Thanksgiving. I read it every year. I also have some Elizabeth Goudge Christmas tales that I read and also kid's books too. It is a lovely tradition.

The timing of this video being uploaded is so serendipitous. Iâve been feeling very stuck and trapped by my job. I work a desk job, thankfully from home, but itâs extremely stressful and I very much dislike it. However, it does cover my basic needs very well, so Iâve been trying to be thankful for it. Hearing you say that we arenât defined by our jobs really helped. You also made me very nostalgic for when I was a bookseller. It can be such a magical job. Weâve been to your bookstore! We love small shops and stop in whenever we come across them. We were on a winter vacation. My son was 3 at the time and loved the childrenâs section. He picked out a train that was very special to him. I couldâve browsed for hours but it was close to closing. Itâs a lovely shop!
I have always had a special fondness for childrensbooks and when I got old enough to travel (mostly study trips with school) I would bring home local to the country I was visiting childrens books (past tense because right now there's hardly any traveling for obvious reasons). I would go into a regular bookstore and ask the clerk what book every child from that particular country would know was and get that (or those). I can't tell you the warmth every clerk beams with and they have NO doubt in their body what book(s) to reach for. I've gotten to know so many wonderful stories and illustrations from so many places this was. Best. Souvenir. Ever

today has been a really anxious day for me. I find out about college acceptance and it feels like the culmination of much of the past 6 year's stress. as I sit here waiting for my sister to return so that I can open the letter, I watched this video. I now find myself fulfilled with a warm energy that feels so healing. I know that regardless of what the college says, I have myself and I love that being. you are so kind. I love you, beautiful soul.
I loved reading as a child so much; that and my animals were my escape from a troubled home. Most girls begged their mothers for new clothes or jewellery. All I wanted were books. My poor mom WANTED a daughter who wanted new clothes and jewelry and that's what she would give me, which I never wore. After about 10 years or so, she got the hint and started getting me gift cards for books.
The "10,000 Doors of January" is a phenomenal book, one of the best I've ever read! It's dense, so take your time with it. I had to take a few breaks from it because parts are intense (if you are sensitive). But all ends well. đ

I love that you spoke about reading children's books as adults. I have started reading more again over the last year or so and I have been reading through the "Little House" books. I looooved the books when I was younger and I"m so enjoying re-visiting them. I'm also wanting to read the Anne of Green Gables books.
Oh. @Healing Waters, those Little House books and Anne books are still on my shelf from my childhood. I actually read Jane of Lantern Hill this week - I loved it all over again. There is something magic in them that calls to us, no matter what our age. Enjoy!

I think is wonderful that you read children's book,i a always read to my grandchildren since they were babies and we still have a new resolution that every year we get to read different books every day, we get it from the library or i usually buy books for them, when you read you are in a different new World and we can become the characters on the book we read, i feel like i am in the story with all the characters living and experiencing every thing that happens there, people think I'm weird because i love reading children books but i don't care what they think if I'm happy and enjoying every minute of it, my grandchildren love to read books also and we share the story together, is good and better than being stuck to a computer all the time, i.love the book Aragon, And a Wrinkle in time, well i love fantasy books also, have a blessed day and thanks for sharing all those books with us, i can't wait to start looking for those books i haven't read yetâ€đ

Your bookstore is charming! I would love to spend some time there among the books. When I was in college, I had a work study job in the college library and I loved it! To be surrounded by books was like being surrounded by flowers. I couldn't pick just one or two. Lucky for me, I could borrow them and not buy them.

Hi from Western Australia, I have been following your videos for some time now on the recommendation of my best friend. She is in England where I am from and we have now been corresponding for over 50years. She also loves your videos and I often watch them when Iâm feeling frazzled and out of touch. I live in one of the remotest towns in the world and although when I cam here 33 years ago it was the country town I had been looking for but now it has grown out of all the things that I loved and Iâm looking for a smaller place to move to to live out my retirement. Keep on making your wonderful videos Iâm am sure you bring peace to many as you have done for me.
I absolutely LOVE children's books but I don't usually bring them up when recommending books to friends not sure how others will recieve them. I like that you made a point that they spark hope and I think that's why I'm drawn to them. If you have not read 'The Land of Elyon' series yet i highly recommend!
We have very similar taste in books! I recently learned that there is a name for this genre: magical realism. If you Google that term, you'll find lots of great suggestions.
I'm currently reading Emily Martin's "Snow & Rose" and what a lovely book it is! I just adore her work.
If you like "The Hidden Life of Trees," you would probably like "Braiding Sweetgrass." It was the most beautiful book I read all year. Highly recommended!!

Paola, I suggest the series âHis dark materials.â Its a fantasy story about other worlds and the main characters are children and the perspectives alternate from them and other characters, even animals, and Itâs a great read.
Interesting was in philip pullmans-his dark materials when some sort of hell was described and a creature which was seen as god. Its one of the few places where an author took this task up.
The alternating perspectives (each chapter read from the point of view of one character) is also present in george rr martins-a song of ice and fire. Its like a chapter from earths point of view, the next from venuss point of view, jupiters point of view etc, while things are happening on the other planets of the solar system.
Thereâs just something about your channel that feels so safe and cozy. For the past few months I havenât had any motivation to read but this video just reignited my passion for literature and books. Also this kind of makes me wanna open a small book shop of my own someday or maybe even be a writer I donât even know but this video just made me fall in love with books all over again and itâs all thanks to you, thank you

Working in a book shop cannot be someone's dream job.....but being a worker in a bookshop is such a blessingâ. Once i was went for to get some books for our book fair...so i was waited in the book shop for my teacher to arrive and conform the books....so i just read 3- 4 books and saw lot of interesting books that i never seen before.....the time goes i went sleep beside the book shelf......tht felt like that i'm the closest friend of all these books...tht feeling is such an amazing thing that popped in my heart .the fact is that i was not mad about my teacher arrived latelyđ.bcz i enjoyed being in that bookshop.And that's the day i realized that how happy i am when i was around the booksđ

You may already be familiar with these, but you might enjoy The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo and also The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson. Iâve had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Peterson at a songwriters conference and was very pleased to read his books afterwards. They are humorous, touching, deeper than one would give credit for at first glance, and overall enjoyable to read.
