Stephen, Reduce negative thoughts. Its quite simple. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down still for a few minutes and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Feel the stillness flow within you. Make it a daily habit. Do the above meditation daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Yes! The paradigm , the mental construct that stupefies us in order that we do not have a clear view of that machine is seductive and at the same time revolting, and it appears we know it !
It so robs us of any belief in our feelings that even after listening to the wise words of Mr Hari knowing them to be true ; we still misinterpret the signal , the red flag that says 'Boy are WE in trouble !'
We see the flag , the crisis that the flag signifies bit still take away t h e message that we are not right , it's us that needs adjusting , medicating to resolve these uneasy feelings.

Marissa Etchison If your current situation is loving, caring, safe, fulfilling, and depression persists then it may be necessary to explore further back (perhaps with a clinical psychologist) into your pre-birth history and early childhood years and into late adolescent years and understand your life script which formed your adult personality. It may provide identification of unresolved pain or trauma encountered during formative years, impacting current mental/emotional state. Or loss of a loved one may be a reason, which bereavement therapy is effective to resolve the depression. Or your life may lack deep-seated spiritual meaning in terms of having purpose and meaning to your earthly life, and engaging with the needy and offering some service to groups within the community may be the answer. For last mentioned consultation with a spiritual director or life couch may be beneficial. Best to you.

Depression & anxiety is a normal part of living in a society that no longer has close communities, we work long hours in jobs that often don't feel meaningful, we are not close to nature all day because our jobs are generally indoors, jobs these days are also not stable which contributes to anxiety, most people have very few close friends, people seem to value being "busy" over spending time with friends, and then there's this whole materialistic culture, that makes people feel like losers if they don't have a fancy car/job/house etc.

"Yet every doctor has just always tried to give me pills" - You've gone to a doctor for help, what else would you like them to do? Take you out into nature? Force you to work on maintaining old connections and making new ones? Get you a more fulfilling job? Make sure you get to bed on time? Doctors give pills as it's the only real measurable they can help in their professional capacity, not because they're lazy. They can (and should) advise on these other aspects, but they're not therapists or life coaches.

I think we should go back to the days where we lived with family instead of alone. Everyone contributes to the running of the household in a meaningful way that works for everyone. Elderly would never get left out and have purpose and be cared for and moms and dads wouldn't feel the burden of taking care of children by themselves and providing for the household by themselves. If I was a millionaire I would build a large house for my family with a large living room where everyone could gather but also have separate quarters where everyone could go if they needed peace. Everyone would have their own bathrooms.

The first time I was involved in something I created with a group of people is the ONLY time in my life I felt I belonged somewhere and a part of someone. I’m that group I’m just opening up and wonder if others are feeling what he just talked about.

I am a Christian so I know scripture well and I’ll go read and study whatever someone gives me. What she sent me doesn’t pertain to depression and anxiety. But she’s still young and will figure it out.
This was really my life saver tonight bc I felt so defective and now I’m leaving here with a direction to go. I have social anxiety and panic attacks that’s what keeps me isolated. I told her no and she stared at me for 10 seconds and then said, "You have a little anxiety, but I think it's medical not psychological. So you need to go back to your doctor and have them test you for everything."
Basically, it was her way of saying she didn't want to help me because I wasn't Christian. I had gone to multiple medical doctors before that meeting and since. They've all said the same thing: anxiety. The other mental health practitioners here messed up my mom, so I definitely don't want to see them.

The only way I've been able to express my anger is in my sleep time thru dreams, nightmares & sleep talking yelling at ppl.

Recognize that you are a creative problem solver and have been throughout your life. You just never gave yourself credit, which is a must. You have overcome many barriers in your life but never gave yourself the credit. The only person in this world that you need approval from is YOU. No one else. Covid was an awakening. People were forced to accept that which they can not change. When you accept what IS, you do not suffer. When you fight what IS, you suffer. People were forced into their inner worlds and face them. Perspective of the external world is merely a reflection of the internal world. We apply our thoughts and emotions to events to label them but events are facts and that's why two people can go through the exact same event and come out with completely different perspectives. Covid was not good or bad, it was an event and either you grew or suffered.

I can tell you how it has affected kids. I am a camp guide in a summer camp, and we make activities and games for them, each series of kids staying for a week. What we observed this summer is that they are extremely starved for attention and touch. I mean, we take care of these through talking, playing and high fives. The real issues are with the inter-person relationships. Some are extremely introverted and stuck into their phones or playing with their toys, especially the younger ones. Overall, we have noticed that they are extremely aggressive and unkind, becoming outright feral. Us, the adults, have already adapted to the situation, but to kids it seems to have been catastrophic. They fight much more than in the previous years, they bully each other more, and they are harder to work with. I do hope lockdowns do not get enforced anymore. These poor kids deserve more.

Excellent talk. In addition to all the things he said, when we are depressed, we have to work through it as well and that takes time. For the past couple of years, I was depressed from a devastating heartbreak. I had to work through it, meaning doing the crying, thinking, pondering, resting, praying, and finding the value in my own life. I tried to get involved in volunteer work. I've done some sewing, reading, writing, and crocheting. I've talked to close friends and spent time with family. And, now, finally, after working through it all, I've emerged on the other side. I feel happy and purposeful again. And that feels wonderful!

Thank you for this. I've been dealing with Anxiety attacks since 6th grade. I was bullied. They broke my nose, ripped apart my clothes. After my first few panic attacks, I started to stay home more and more. Which later turned into agoraphobia. Going to a simple shopping made me sooo nervous, I thought my blood pressure was 200 and I'm going to have a stroke. Seeing all my friends travelling made me even more sad. Beause yes, I was happy being alone home, it felt like my safe spot, later this came back as feeling depressed even at home. Especially more recently. Now, I'm turning 23 and started feeling REALLY lonely. I've started crying for no reason. I felt I'm alone on this world. No one undestrands me. No matter how introvert I am, now I started feeling the desire to go places, meet people. Forget about my problems. And yes, they also prescribed me SEROXAT when I went into middle school, but that changed NOTHING. My father was the main person I did things with. We went to random places. Worked together. And he really started curing my Anxiety. After his passing in 2018, I relapsed and went back to have agoraphobia. I rarely left my room. But just a few days ago this overwhelming feeling of lonelyness started to hit me. Crying for no reason. So now I booked a visit to a clinic. But what you've said here is sooooo true. Now I undestand (hopefully) what my body wants, and I'll look more at this "feeling depressed" thing more as a sign, rather than me thinking I'm just going crazy. I'll try going out more and more. Maybe making the big leap to travel again to other countries.
Sorry for the long comment, but had to let this off of my chest.
    Thank you.
I'll update my comment when I feel more and more better. I pray to God I will.

Best of luck to you. Really sorry about your father. I hope things end up turning around. I would recommend a public gym as a first step in reintroducing yourself to public settings. Physical movement kills anxiety like nothing else and there are often staff that will help guide you. Joining a class can also help, although I would recommend something that has less risk of being self conscience. You would be surprised how happy and welcoming people can get when they see someone new at their facility.

So, as I've promised; an update after visiting my doc:
The first problem was that I suddenly stopped taking Seroxat, which as a side effect made me feel like crap 90% more. So as I started taking it I feel better, but I do feel that weird feeling in my chest.
The second thing he now prescribed me are long walks. Walking and exercise makes these feeling pass by a bit faster. Not only that, but I started being around my family a bit more than usual, which also helps to forget a bit more.
I hope my next comment update will be when I feel completely me again.

Bro, I'm sorry about everything that has happened to you. If you are physically able, and you want to feel better, do a few things for yourself:
      1. believe the past doesn't determine your future
      2. start hitting the weights and start building the strongest, healthiest physique you can. the BODY will fuel your MIND.
      3. eat well and get your rest. so you can LIFT more weights.
i don't care what any doctors says or anyone says: if you are able to lift weights, get to work building your body up. it will do more for you than any therapy, prescription, book, etc. good luck. the more you lift, the better you will feel

@Sqrley L. , this is quite good, but listen also to Dr Gabor Maté, who shows even better, how we can use Compassionate Inquiry into understanding ourselves in a positive and compassionate way!
He is an incredible doctor with a lifetime of experience, including palliative care, serious disease, suicide, addiction, etc. Through this experience and his weaving together of growing research, he shows us a path forward. He blames no one, and goes even more deeply in his work, to show how unconscious childhood stress has influenced development of not only our depression, ADHD, OCD, etc, but also serious disease such as cancer, MS, ALS, etc., which can also develop as a consequence of our stress. His many talks have changed my lifelong depression, as I now understand that my problems are no one’s fault, and that I can finally come out of this hole.
      Best wishes to you!
