  • NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. This talk only represents the speaker’s personal understanding of and experiences with anxiety. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
What if it turned out that anxiety isn’t actually our enemy? What if we suddenly realised our fear was trying to help us? What would happen if we stopped trying to fight anxiety and embraced it as a trusted friend?
Tim Box is a therapist, author and anxiety expert, and in his youth experienced debilitating levels of social anxiety.
Tim has spent a large part of the last 10 years helping people understand and control their anxiety response and at some point during the last decade he started to get the distinct impression that most people dealing with anxiety were thinking about it in entirely the wrong way.
In this talk Tim explains why we need to think about anxiety differently, why the help we are being offered often exacerbates the problem, and how a very simple shift in the way we think about our own emotional responses can free us from our diagnoses and help us all feel a lot less anxious about anxiety. Tim is a remedial hypnotist and mind management expert. He helps people get back in control of the way they think, feel and behave.
Having overcome his own social anxiety in the past, he now specialises in treating anxiety issues. In 2017 he published his first book; Clear Your Head: The simple guide to enjoying your life without anxiety getting in the way. This went on to become an Amazon number 1 bestseller in its category. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

To whoever dealing with this. IT WILL GET BETTER. I promise you that. You are not going crazy. U will not die because of it. U will be better. Focus on not being scared of the symptoms rather than focusing on getting rid of it. Change whatever can be changed. What can’t just say screw it and move on. The phrase"do not be afraid" is written in the bible 365 times in the Bible
That's a daily reminder from God to live every day being fearless.
I hope this will help too:
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.”
      Psalm 94:19
"Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you."
      1 Peter 5:7
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
      Matthew 6:34
      Ask God for help..
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."
      Philippians 4:6
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
      Matthew 6:34
"Say to those who have an anxious heart, 'Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.' "
      Isaiah 35:4
"And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?"
      Matthew 6:27

From all my google searches over the years, I've always thought of anxiety as the enemy... the cause for my low self-esteem, the reason why I failed in things I tried doing... but after listening, I cried because I realised I am the reason for my thought patterns, I am the one who puts myself down, who tells myself that I am unlovable, that I am not smart enough or skilled enough to make it out in my career. When you talked about being kind to ourselves, to make peace, to actually listen to our crew instead of trying to lock them away and hide... it made sense. I used to think anxiety was a disorder, but now I realise chronic anxiety is just a result of an emotion that has tried to take over the ship because the captain has lost control. I am the captain, and I need to take back control by being kind to myself, by listening and by telling myself I am good enough.

The fear of anxiety is itself a problem, anxiety might sound like nothing to those who don't suffer from it but it creeps up slowly and can grow like a snowball being rolled on the ground becoming larger. Anxiety can make a person reclusive, jobless, have no relationship/partner, damage social circles and damage social and interactive skills, its a major problem in the modern era which nobody takes seriously until they experience it themselves or someone close to them goes through it.

Chilling out, Take some action. Reduce negative thoughts. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, eyes closed, be still and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly they will reduce and relax the mind. Deep inhalation-exhalation is not needed. Day or night before sleep sit or lie down and observe your breath. Be as still as possible as it reduces negative thoughts. Make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Accurate. I feel like anxiety isn’t an issue until you identity the anxiety as anxiety. Until about a year ago, I never really cared and I was never very stressed. I used to interpret anxiety as, “hey I need to do something.” Then all the sudden I was like, “hey I’m feeling anxious so I need to do something to get rid of it.” Which makes me more anxious because my goal isn’t to accomplish my task, it’s to actively try to get rid of the anxiety

This guy is right that anxiety is a good thing sometimes; it helps us not be late to work/meet a deadline, ask out that special someone, etc. but it’s when your brain misfires and convinces you that you have anxiety when you’re just trying to watch your favorite show that you really should seek help… and part of that help may mean medication, and that’s okay. @@sausagetdm9339 i think the most important and easiest thing to realize is that it is totally okay to feel anxious or nervous. Today‘s problem is that you dont feel allowed to be vulnerable or feel anxious about something anymore, just because others dont seem to feel the same thing. You have to realize that it is okay to feel anxious. Everybody experiences nervousness, some more intense than others but the thing is that you are NOT alone! You are allowed to feel anxious and you have to accept whatever you feel. This it what makes you human! Feeling anxious is just a natural reaction of your body, just like feeling happy or angry or excited. If you avoid situations, whether it will make you experience nervousness or happiness, you will still feel anxious about either things because you feel afraid to accept this emotion. You have to accept that this is an emotion that everybody feels and that it is okay to feel something. I hope that helped you! At least this realization helped me overcome my anxiety :) I still feel anxious sometimes, but it doesn’t rule over my life anymore.

David, Take some action.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

I finally went to therapy and understood that I’m not supposed to fight the symptoms. I have to find acceptance in the moment and understand the fact that I HAVE AN ANXIETY DISORDER. And this is ok. I enjoyed the majority of this talk - particularly the emphasis on accepting anxiety rather than pursuing getting rid of it. However, I disagree strongly on his statement that medication is not necessary for "a non-medical problem" (anxiety) - anxiety actually is a medical problem in many cases. We just treat mental health like it isn't medical. The truth is that it is medical - it's not purely thoughts, and it's not purely a result of evolutionary development - anxiety is created through chemical changes in the brain and the maintenance of neuropathways that contribute to these chemical releases. One of the reasons therapy can help is through coaching patients to form new thought and behavior patterns - these (over long periods of sustained effort) change the neuropathways in the brain into ones that are less likely to trigger those chemical releases, and thus reduce anxiety overall. However, entrenched neuropathways can be extremely difficult to alter, and regression is likely. Anxiety medication is used both short and long-term to suppress the chemicals that are released when we engage those neuropathways (um, please note that this is an extremely simplified explanation and a lot of other stuff is going on with medications, which is why you get side effects and some drugs work across different things and work better or less well for different people...). In short, anxiety medication helps to control out-of-control chemical saturations that contribute to severe anxiety. Benzodiazepenes are an excellent example of a rapid-action and strong influence - you take a benzo and within ten minutes or so the world is kind of floaty, you're exhausted, and even if you do feel anxious it feels like something you're watching on a screen, rather than an actual emotional response. Benzos are highly addictive and are NOT for long-term use, but can be helpful to those experiencing severe anxiety / panic attacks in rapid succession. They often have adverse side effects, which can be severe. Long-term anxiety medication is not a "drug dependency" - here Tim is confusing a "drug dependency" with an addiction. That because you believe you need it, you are addicted to it / dependent upon it. While it is certainly true that humanity isn't perfect and there are plenty of people in the world who think "I can't function without my anxiety meds", that's not actually how it works. Medication is NEVER to be recommended as the *only* treatment for anxiety - not everyone who has an anxiety problem needs medication, and medication won't fix everything related to anxiety. But that doesn't mean that medication is not recommended at all!!
A holistic approach - for any medical condition - is most recommended: medication plus therapy plus (ex) yoga or mindfulness or de-stress hobbies, or some other lifestyle change. All of these are functioning parts of anxiety treatment. The goal of all of these approaches is to help change thoughts, to change mindset - to reset neuropathways to more optimal functions to decrease/suppress the release of cortisol (a key "anxiety" chemical) and increase seratonin or dopamine or other "I feel fine/happy" chemicals.
Allow me to elaborate: I am not addicted to my multivitamins, but my doctors and pharmacists still strongly recommend that I take them every day, in appropriate formulations, for the rest of my life - I'm even occasionally placed on different supplements - Vitamin C or B12 or D3 - in order to correct chemical imbalances in my blood / body that would predispose me for negative health consequences. This does not make me "dependent upon" these drugs, any more than I am dependent upon my inhaler to control my asthma. If I do not take my inhaler, my breathing rapidly deteriorates and I am more likely to have an asthma attack. If I do not take my anxiety medications, my mental health can deteriorate, and I am more likely to have a panic attack. In turn, if I don't take my inhaler and my blood oxygen levels decrease, my brain will release anxiety chemicals (ex, cortisol) in order to tell me "something's wrong, pay attention" - and I'm more likely to have a panic attack in response *even if* I'm taking anxiety medication.
The point here is: the brain is complex, anxiety is complex, and both are able to be influenced by medical interventions. Medication is not the end solution, and I would one day like to be off my anxiety medication - I'd like to be off *all* of my medications, for all my health issues. I'm 32 years old and I don't need this many medical issues, or pills, thank you very much.
But what I want will not always reflect my reality. The reality is that I do suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and occasional depression as well as a myriad of more traditionally physical health issues. Medication, therapy, and practicing mindfulness (in relationships, eating, and daily activity) are the three primary methods I engage to manage my anxiety and maintain functionality (working, chores, hygiene, health, relaxation and relationships). It is true that I could try to operate without my medication. But it's also true that in my case the lack of medication means those chemicals are not suppressed to any extent and my anxiety symptoms are more severe.
I would never, ever recommend that someone completely rule out medication as a treatment for their anxiety. Everyone has different needs - if yours is resolved purely through CBT or AEDP, then that is wonderful and I'm happy for you. But if therapies and self-care alone are insufficient, then please schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist - preferably a good one - and see what treatments may help. Start with low doses, make sure your psychiatrist has your best interests in mind (rather than paydays for specific medications - aka, a bad psychiatrist), advocate for your health, and see if medication can help to take the edge off. My brother and I have tried several different medications and dosages - he works well with a typical anti-anxiety medication at a medium dosage (10mg). When I am doing really well, I can decrease my dosages to the minimum (5mg), but I'm currently on year 3 of high stress so I recently switched to a medication more traditionally used to treat depression but with anti-anxiety properties, and I'm at a middling-high dosage (20mg). When my exterior stressors decrease, I will work with my psychiatrist to decrease my dosage again, but for now this helps with my daily functioning.
Do keep an eye out for side effects - research tardive dyskinesia so you know some serious side effects to watch for, even with traditionally low-side-effect medications - everyone responds differently. Keep in mind that anxiety and other mental health medications are quite literally used to treat medical conditions of the brain, and anything messing with your brain chemistry can have unexpected consequences - we don't yet fully understand the brain or its chemical reactions - so paying attention to how your body responds to any brain medication is your best defense against serious side effects.
But please don't rule out medication completely or tell others that medication makes them an addict or dependent upon medication as though it's a negative personal trait. This is definitively a medical condition. Society does not yet treat it as such, but it is, and one key method of treatment is through chemical / medical means.

Mental health is medical at times, however anxiety is an emotion that sometimes isn't processed properly. By medicating an emotion, you are further neglecting that process of the emotion. You don't medicate joy do you? Because it doesn't feel like it hurts us. Yet we believe anxiety does hurt us. Our brain has anxiety to protect us from threats. It knows no difference between the saber tooth a long time ago and modern problems. So medication is told it's what we need for it. It's not a problem, it's just how we look at it.

I feel like there's a big difference between being anxious and having an anxiety disorder. Yes, anxiety is an emotion and it's completely normal - people will be anxious about school, work, money, relationships, etc. However, people with anxiety disorders are often irrationally anxious and it can be so crippiling that you cannot do the things you once did. Most people who feel anxiety aren't waking up at 2AM having a panic attack because they've convinced themselves they're having a heart attack and dying, but someone with an anxiety disorder (especially health anxiety) could. With general, day-to-day anxiety, you probably don't need anti-anxiety medication (you can often cope with specific techniques from a doctor or therapist) but when your anxiety is so debilitating that you can't have a fufilling life, then it's probably necessary.

working with a psychologist and doing cbt, i feel a huge change when “brainwashing” myself before i leave like instead of thinking “what if i have a panic attack, what if i vomit, what if i faint, what if i feel trapped” i flood my mind with “i can calm myself down enough to not lose control, i’m safe, i’m going to feel good” etc. it’s so important to learn how to cope with a panic attack and get through it and stop fearing it. once you get to that point, it hardly affects your life anymore.

Things that i cannot do anything about because everything is just in my head, nothing i do can fix this. Most morning, feeling bad, my anxiety asking me to answers questions that there is no answer to, and there is nothing there. Nothing to fix this, after every answer my heart kept pumping hard, and then new questions come, feeling much worse than before. That’s how i feel nost of my days. This really helped me to come out of panicking and anxiety. One might say this saved me from myself.
Every time I feel anxious, I try to appreciate the emotion, that it is not the enemy.. then I tell my "crew", "Thanks for letting me know.. but you don't have to trigger on thoughts.. thoughts are never dangerous, let them come and go" OR that "you don't have to trigger on emotions, things are as they are and I am in no danger, but thanks". Something of the sort.
Being kind to myself and my anxiety response and GUIDING it in the right direction, helped me out of years of being anxious and depressed constantly and just seeing things for what they are.
This took time mind you, and repeating myself for a long time, but helping guide my response for a longer period helped it stick.

Hey, I know right now you can’t breathe that well, your probably thinking “if anxiety is causing all of this then why do I only feel this way when the symptoms come out of nowhere”. I’ve been there, in fact I’m there right now. I’ve done tests upon tests for my physical health from heart problems to breathing problems to stomach problems, I have taken ambulances multiple times convinced that it was the end.
I just don’t want it to be true that anxiety is the root of the cause but at the same time I would love to be 100% certain that it is the cause at the same time so that I could stop feeling this way, unfortunately I’ll never 100% know for a fact, and that is probably what causes me the most distress. “What if the tests that they ran missed the root cause” “what if I just think it’s anxiety but it’s actually something physically wrong that could kill me”
I’m writing this because I want you to know you aren’t the only one. I’m going to take this one day at a time and you should do the same. I’m going to try and stop worrying about the uncontrollable. I will accept feeling uncomfortable and embrace it. I will reassure myself that I have felt this way 1000s of times before and although I may have thought it was the end every single one of those times I always make it through.
I love you all and we will get through this together ❤️❤️

I didn't understand why it was happening to me and even what it was. I didn't know how to deal with my anxiety or let alone how to calm myself down. I finally understand that it's not an enemy but rather a friend who is just trying to keep me safe. My anxiety has saved me from a lot of disasters and I feel like I never take a moment to appreciate that. Yes, it's painful to wake up with a heavy chest, struggling to breathe. The constant cold feeling in my stomach is not easy to live with. However, I remember being anxious from as young as 4 and now at the age of 22 everytime I feel extreme anxiety I remind myself that the mission is not to "get rid" or anxiety or "avoid" anxiety, the mission is to listen to my mind and negotiate with it and always strive for the best outcome in the given situation.

I am 77 and dislocating a hip replacement at 73 woke me up to my age. I didnt think I suffered from anxiety because it was controlled by a life time of exercise. Running, hiking and walking my dog. I even ran after my initial hip replacement and took my dog for 5 to 10km walks. This was all taken away in a split second when I over extended my leg and the hip popped out. It was extremely painful and the surgeon put it back a month later it popped out again. This time the extreme pain caused a mild stroke and I had to wait 8 weeks before it was re done. This all created the anxiety I feel today because I was suddenly faced with my morality which had never entered my head as I was always fit and age was just a number. Without exercise my levels of cortisol could not be controlled and not being able to release all the energy has created anxiety as well as depression as I realise now 3 years later that my life will never be the same again and I dont know how to "be" without exercising. Frustration has accompanied the anxiety as all the stress of the what its leaves me exhausted. The thought of living the rest of my life out like this is not how I imagined it. Now I am overthinking everything and am totally demotivated as I cant do what I did all my life and took for granted. I am on anti depressants and valium in small doses but have never taken medication in my life. Now I depend on it. What is frustrating is knowing I need to accept and allow but I am fighting it even though I know it's not how I am going to find relief. Its got to be the most frustrating space to be in especially at this age.

This guy is so spot on. In order to accept anxiety as a normal part of life you have to understand it, the symptoms and how it manifests. Once you understand that it gets easier to accept it as a normal part of life and with that comes the reduction and intensity of the symptoms. There are techniques like deep breathing and meditation to help you cope while you’re working on understanding anxiety. Try to reduce your stress, stay away from negative people and situations and spend more time doing the things that you enjoy.

The techniques are not designed to get rid of the anxiety (nor should that be the goal), but minimises its importance in one's life

@@junaid7197 That is incredible! I'm happy to hear you're overcoming that. That is definitely true about becoming habituated to it. I used to have very bad stage fright and fret over small stuff, but I found as I kept exposing myself to different situations it dissipated. CBT and mindfulness can be really helpful in allowing one to confront anxiety and understand it. I'll definitely check out that video. On another note, I think anxiety is also so prevalent nowadays because we live in such a fast paced society. In other words, anxiety can be another approach at analyzing life, albeit, overanalyzing. I think nature can help with that though. In nature, it can be easier to be connected and in tune with everything. Another thing is simplifying life such as finding enjoyment in the small things. That can be laughing with friends, seeing the sunrise, listening to crickets or trains in the distance at night , haha, I know that's probably random...but yeah, everyone has different techniques at destressing.
Sometimes downsizing belongings or decluttering can help with that. The most difficult thing is probably trying to get other people to understand when you're anxious. What do you think helps with that?

    • @junaid7197
      @junaid7197 Před 3 lety

@@maiamartini9095 I think you are right that one of the reasons that more people are debilitated by anxiety is the fast-paced nature of the world, but I think the main one is that humans in today's society are not as social as they used to be. I find the company of others to be not only incredibly fulfilling, but also a valuable stress-buster. When we can talk, laugh and share with another, problems seem to melt away. Messaging you has this effect on me too. We humans were born to be with each other, even if this can sometimes be difficult.
I like what you said about the little things. In a way, life is "merely" a combination of many, many little things, all added up to make a big thing.
Getting others to understand that you are anxious is not always easy. I recommend sharing solely with a close person or two who knows you well and who you think will understand. :)

Excellent talk. For those that are here for a way to take the edge off panic at its pinnacle.
    1. Contract hard the muscles in your body for 5 seconds.
    2. Breath in for 4 seconds while still contracting
    3. Release your contraction and breathe out for 5-8seconds.
Doing this over and over can bring you back to a calm state, really focus on exhaling the tension away on step 3.
I get panic attacks at night sometimes (just got one there) and this technique I find is the best solution in the moment of panic. Helps if there's meditation music available, whatever keeps you focused on the breath and process.
If fearing a panic attack itself normally drives you into one, knowing the above approach may prevent anxiety turning Into full blown panic.

I was having a panic attack while eating and this came across my recommendations. I have been dealing with it the wrong way that when it comes, I push it away and end up vomiting and even pooping (excuse for my words) because I always try to get rid of it instead of listening to it. If you are reading this, remember that you are not alone and you are stronger than you think. I love you so much and please take care of yourself. We can do this!

Is Anxiety a signal from our mind to alert you about things we are ignoring or running away from life !

Thought I’d share my notes that I took from watching this amazing speech -
    1. Refuse to believe that you’re ill. Anxiety is an emotion not an illness
    2. Listen to your crew. Don’t push them away otherwise they will speak louder in order to be heard. When the crew stops shouting, the captain can be heard and that’s when your more logical thinking gets to have an input and you truly get to decide if this feeling is actually appropriate/helpful or not
    3. Be kind to the crew. For all the criticism and negativity that you’ve received in your life, the person who has giving you the most is yourself. This has a cumulative effect of destroying the morale of your crew. A demoralised crew = low self-esteem
To repair the damage, decide from now on to always talk to your crew (yourself) with positivity and kindness. People do their best when they feel empowered to achieve. If you beat yourself up, you just end up beat. If you build yourself up, who knows how far you can reach!
It’s important to feel anxiety every day of our lives because it means that the crew are still sailing the ship and still trying to get it in the right direction. It’s the part of you that reminds you to check your keys before you leave the house, to re-read your messages before you hit send
The first step to changing your experience is to accept it. Anxiety is a natural part of our human experience - once we stop seeing it as an enemy but as a trusted friend, we’ll be surprised how quickly the crew gets back to sailing the ship and we stop feeling less anxious about anxiety
    ❤️❤️❤️
