Why Stoics Put Greatness On Display

- When we see greatness, we should memorialize it.
We should put it that greatness up on display. On our desk. On the wall. In ink on our skin. On the home screen of our phones.
However you decide to honor the people whose example you love, put it somewhere you are guaranteed to see it every day and ask: "am I living by the example they stand for?"

I know it's going to sound stupid, but I collect expensive action figures of fictional characters because even as a child I find merits in the values fictional heroes stands for and I have them displayed behind my office as a reminder for me to do better. It's silly, sure, but it gets me working harder so that's worth something.
It's not stupid, storytelling is a basic human trait going back thousands of years to teach important life messages and truths.
"If it makes you happy it can't be that bad" -Sheryl Crowe
I can relate to it
Thanks you for sharing.
Please listen to Dr. Jordan B Peterson. Look up where he tells people to stop saying things that make us sound weak.
You said your collection is stupid and you criticized it.
Once you transform that default, great things will happen.
Good luck!
Show us!!!
Man this is vital. The simple reminders you see everyday just give you that kick up the butt on those days you're just not feeling it
I ran across your website a little while back. I signed up for, and received the daily emails and love them. I like what you have said about reading and journaling. I was watching this video and really like your quote. “2020 is a test. It will make you a better person or a worse one”. I started thinking about it. It was a rough year, besides the pandemic. I died during a brain surgery, they had to beat on my chest and bring me back to life. Then they placed me in a medically induced coma for a few months. While I was out I lost my mom, whom I was close to. I didn’t get to say good bye or attend the funeral. You’re words, and therefore stoicism has meant a lot to me for the “healing” process. I’m doing better than anyone thought I would (including medical people), and because of finding stoicism through you and your work, I’m a better person. I just want to say thank you for all you’ve done! Your work does make a difference!
I've always believed that intelligence is discovery more than achievement. We've been evolved since we could walk on two legs. Its been an epic adventure ever since.
“Think with your stick forward” 🤣🤣😅 that one has got me in trouble
I have two quotes tattooed on me, one that my dad always used to tell me "with your shield or upon it" and the other a song lyric "darkness can show you the light."
Will soon have another tattoo with the phrase "taking souls" from David Goggin's concept of doing what people do not think you capable of doing.
Multiple tattoos symbolizing rising above adversity and continuing on despite hardships. They are like therapy on rough days and remind me to keep going, keep being
Way cool 💪
*Everything negative around you is an opportunity for you to rise up. Stop caring about what others are thinking, just start putting in the work. I am cheering for you...*
As much as I don't really care about what anybody else thinks. To make it in this world, you have to regardless. There's no other way around it. Just play the game and be the best at what you do.
Got me one of your "memento mori" coins to carry around all day - it frequently happens to just slide out of my pant's pocket with a noticeable °thud° whenever i put my feet up, laying down on the couch or likes. That instantly makes me reflect on the day and whether there's something to be done right now!
Pure coincidence but a great, GREAT reminder!
_thx_
I had written down a quote recently from The Book of the Five Rings by miyamoto musashi " distinguish between gains and losses..."
Beautiful office and bookstore, filled with so much wisdom! Thank you for the tour and hope to one day visit the states and maybe meet you! The way you've grown since I've first read and heard your work is amazing! You clearly follow your own teachings. 😊📖
Hey Ryan, great video, I thought you might appreciate this quote by Marie de Sevigne on display in my local library in Bedford UK; "When I step into this library, I cannot understand why I ever step out of it."
Personal correspondence with Mattis! Very cool!
I ma reading your " Stillness is the key". It's a true master piece!
I was recently inspired by Ryan's "Dance of Death Print" he kept on his wall, which made me ponder deeply about death too. Now, after full acceptance of my time coming eventually, I have the Dance Of Death Print near my door too. Thanks a lot, Ryan. You helped me a lot.
I'm a big fan of quotes. So glad you mentioned your tattoos! I've got one too, over 10 years old at this point. It's in the original Koine Greek, so it's really just a reminder to me when I look at my arm. I don't think most people would be able to read it, but I do get asked about it. But it's the "Death Overshadows You" part to the longer MA quote from Book 4, Chapter 17. It's like a Memento Mori and a reminder to always strive to be good all in one small quote.
Thanks for being our reminder 👍
I thoroughly enjoyed your tour! I thought of so many ideas for my office that speak to my soul. Thanks!
This video is very cool. You actually gave me some ideas to do in my room. I was advise by my therapist to start watching your video. Best advice from him.
Thanks Ryan this is amazing for someone new to Stoicism and interested in it.
Your videos are inspiring and always thought provoking. Thank you.
Ahh I just read Meditations for the first time and felt that the dont waste time arguing about a good person be one was one that stood out to me as well. Your vids are great for getting more information and learning more about stoicism!!
This was great! Great space too!
Thanks for what you do Ryan
Love from Italy
great meditation to start the day. I like "amor fati" and "memento mori".
Very inspiring ⭐️
On point...
This video was awesome and inspiring. How cool to be surrounded by books and wise sayings. Loved the Latin saying in the book store. I’ve just discovered the Daily Stoic Journal and it has recently arrived to my home in South Australia. The “planner” in me is thinking I should just start from Jan 1 even though it arrived in February. Does it matter if I start now and continue through to next year? Thanks for re-introducing me to Philosophy.
Brilliant
Great video
Very good , has me in its grips to succeed
Like it ryan....good idea..
Daily Stoic email sign up never always freezes for me! Finally got it to work from the home page
I like it! it is very inspiring!
I wish you a good and productive day!
Greetings from Austria.
Literally Marie Kondo :)
Proves it’s a great concept!
This is so cool 😎 I’m all about this
A lot of great stuff. I suggest you move it around once in a while, so it doesn't start to blend into the wall. We try to do that with art.
I didn’t know you talked to special forces operators. I’ve only heard you say that 200 times.
🤣
It must be a key stoic principle to rattle off your accomplishments every time you introduce yourself
Being a good person is essential.
Being a good photographer is also important.
Ryan, please ask your cameraman not to shoot with an open aperture. It narrows the depth of field. As a result, half of what you showed failed to focus.
While I love all your videos this one is particularly exceptional!
Hey Ryan, I’m currently reading your Daily Stoic book - my first stoic book was The Art of Living. Anyways, I looked at your store, didn’t see a 4 virtues print or sticker for a water bottle or what you had on your wall above the door way. I think the 4 virtues that would be a cool one to add for prints and such, I understand there’s a medallion in that. Appreciate the content brother, I’m a slow reader but I try, I plan on reading Meditations eventually, currently juggling a few books. Keep up the quality work.
So many quotes.
Seems like a lot of clutter. Do we need reminders in every direction in many places? Over time doesn’t ot fade into generic background rather than seen? Perhaps rotate a subset in the bathroom? We all start and end the day there with occasional visits
I am looking for your wall tattoo of the four cardinal virtues. Exactly the design you have, it is my favorite. Where can I get this?
Just found out your channel and feel that viewers would really benefit if you had yourself mic'd up with a lav mic for all your videos. Just a thought from someone who likes to listen to your videos while driving or working out. Crisp audio is the most important thing in those situations
I was watching a video that said having motivational quotes all over the walls is a sign of neuroticism. I looked around my walls and saw motivational quotes everywhere. Thoughts on this? I think it was a Vanessa Van Edwards video talking about the OCEAN or big 5 personality type categories: Openness, Conscientiousness, Empathy, ..?. and Neuroticism.
Hi Ryan, what is the stoic view on exercise and your body build overall? Have you thought about this topic for a video?
First view man!!!!! You changed myy life for real Ryan.
man, he’s (Seneca) always talking to the same guy
starting to wonder if Lucilius even existed
Would love to know where to get this beautiful four virtues logo
me too
You have a Kafka quote!
Headed to the #library, awesome house btw. Love the set up . I’m Going to your bookstore one day soon !
Anyone else not been getting daily stoic newsletter email this week or this just me?
Could you please explain the Joey Roth design The Obstacle is the way, i don't really get it
what do the stoics have to say about discerning between what you control vs what you have the ability to influence?
hey ryan, where do you get all these cool posters?

Hello👋🙋♂️ there...
Amazing and very interesting video🎥.. Super like👌👌👌
Great information very helpful👌
Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge📚
Do keep posting👍
Warm regards and best👍💯 wishes
The UnknownManCub 👍😎👨🏭
The three he has tattooed on him (if anybody cares cause he said it at the very end).
"The obstacle is the way"
"Ego is the enemy."
.
And,
"Stillness is the key."
Edited
@@WastedYears76 Thanks for correcting that, I appreciate it!
Sincerity vs shameless self promotion- the ultimate struggle
Sitting us senators
But what are the stoic thoughts about past accomplishments? That is, trophy’s of you’re works? Like I served in the military, should I put things on the wall relating to that? You say you’ve talked to special forces, senators, and ect. Is that ok?
Why not?!
I do that. But i do make sure to use them gadgets as "fuel" to inspire me to move on, not as something do just kick back and dwell on - easily happens!
Do you have SMS sign ups in addition to email? Would love a stoic motivating text here and there!
Great idea!
Quietly sit and think
I write doctor who quotes on my wall
which are your favorites? I love Dr. Who

Never cruel
Never cowardly (never ever eat pears)
Remember
Hate is always foolish
Love is always wise
Always try to be nice
But never fail to be kind.
very nice decor and collection. but, what does it day about Ryans outlook that there are zero quotes from the giants of the Judeo-Christian tradition?
I know there gotta be something inspired by Robert Greene. Guess it didn't make it in the video?
And epictetus.
This reminds me of someone who has an obsessive mental illness. Good quotes to reflect on but pretty excessive in my eyes
Given what he wrote, isn't it a tad ironic having up 5 (?) busts of Marcus Aurelius?
*Give a man full stomach and empty balls and watch his ambition go outside the window. Comfort killed more dreams than failure ever did.*
wtf
Is this a guy thing?
You asking about examples for female stoics?! 🤔 Good question!
I had a similar feeling but couldn't express what it is, like androcentrism...I had to look that up!
@@Linda-tj2qi why androcentrism? In the ancient times the knowledge, learning and philosophy were privilege for the wealthy men, does it mean that the world was androcentric? The written world for sure, but I would not go so far, as to state that stoicism is androcentric, the values are universal. Bettering oneself is gender neutral, imho.
Is rather disheartening you only have male philosophers to quote but the philosophy of women does tend to live in the skin of our kids. or my bumper sticker. "Well behaved women rarely make history"

All this guy does is yap and talk about dying…he doesn’t actually create or do anything
_"Good!"_ - you just successfully identified yet another channel _you_ never need to return to watch *ever again!* 🌱
Feel free to leave and be productive. ✌🏻
