Yeah I really like that a lot of the ship is built for function and utility and not aesthetics. Cause it’s not a cruise ship, it’s not designed and decorated for your rich gramma to have a pleasant time. It’s utilitarian and industrial.
If S Weavers character had died at the end of the Original Alien (Like they intended) just how much different would the Alien sequels would've been....
I should not have to chose between the two. Both are awesome within their own space in the Alien world.
I've always been an Alien '79 guy. Actually, it's one of my top five horror films. I'm surprised it's been so long since you've seen them, Dave. I guess we are all like that with different films, though...I haven't watched The Evil Dead films in probably 20 years and I do actually like them! Hearing you describe watching Alien with all the mood and atmosphere makes me want to watch it again right now! 😂
I agree on Dallas death in alien the tension is hyped up with the woman's fear in her voice telling Dallas it's getting closer love that scene. alien is a great horror film.
It's a tough decision. I wanna say Alien, but Ripley really becomes Ripley in Aliens.
I think both movies are horror. It's just that they have guns in Aliens. However, when your protagonists are so terrified, that they'd rather shoot themselves than face the threat...
Giving them guns is like watching a horror movie with friends. It gives you a false sense of security.
Like in Predator.
I think more horror movies should involve people who can defend themselves. That way, your villain can be taken seriously.
Alien, by far.
Same here. I love both, but Alien is much more terrifying. It's the perfect sci-fi horror film.
I've always said this! And most of the time people look at me like I'm nuts because I prefer Alien to Aliens. Don't get me wrong, I love both, but Alien is a better film.
It's the same with me, and another couple examples: Terminator vs. T2. First is MUCH better! Or even Manhunter vs. Red Dragon. Manhunter is bettee
@christopherfeeney1962 definitely agree on Manhunter! I myself feel like I love both Terminator's equally. But that's just me.
I LOVE Aliens...
But I will always prefer ALIEN.
Visually Alien is superior (How can you top the Space Jockey? Derelict interiors? First time seeing the Nostromo design, the slow burn, Cartwright, Skerrit, early Weaver, Yaphet, Holm, brilliant opening scene and so on), and while the characters in Aliens are great, I prefer the ones in the original film. I also prefer that there's only one alien in the original, and one hugger, as oppose to many. Iconic FIRST chest burster scene, is an aspect on its own that makes the original film superior.
A month back, Alien was on TV, and considering I'd seen it many many times since the early 90's, I decided to watch it with the volume on mute, and just enjoyed the silence and the visuals.
Last, but I never bought that even the amazing Ripley would be able to hold on to the ladder while the queen was hanging off of her, at the end of Aliens. I can leave my brain at the door, but that irked me even as a kid. It's a more dynamic and awesome ending when compared to the original, but in general the original film is superior to me.
Alien is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time, let alone horror movies. It was pitched as “Jaws in space,” but I think Alien is much more of a horror movie than Jaws is.
I’ve always loved Aliens since I was a kid and for a while I didn’t even know it was a sequel. When I finally did see Alien I thought it was slow and kind of boring. But now I prefer Alien because I love the vibe and slow-burn horror approach. Maybe getting into Halloween as a teenager influenced my tastes.
I remember being confused how many years later Aliens takes place because the scene where it’s mentioned that Ripley was drifting in space for 57 years was part of a dream sequence. Although in the special edition it’s confirmed that it was many decades later.
Dave, I’d be curious to know your thoughts about Alien 3. It had too many cooks in the kitchen but I still love it and think it makes a great ending to a trilogy. It’s pure horror like the first film, but has a darker and more depressing vibe.
I prefer Alien & it's actually not because the horror tone. That is one of them but The main reason is actually because of the slow burn. Yes a bit too slow maybe but because of the slow burn The movie only gains my interest more all the way up to the end.
With Aliens. Because it's not a slow build & more action & for 2 hours. It doesn't build my interest. It actually loses it. I get spent with all the action. Im always ready for it to be over 20-30 min. before it ends. So when it's over, im always like, very cool movie but phew... I'm glad it over.
With Alien, it leaves me scared & wanting more!
So that's the main reason i prefer Alien, the Slow burn. The more Horror tone is the cherry on top

I just watched the first two as well and I always loved alien more because I prefer horror over action . I appreciated the conflict with Ripley in aliens trying to convince them not to go after the aliens u really felt sigourney weavers urgency and how she’s taken control over the situation we’re in alien she and the crew was helpless like u said u felt that not to mention the practical effects are still flawless holding up better than films today by a long shot
Looking forward to this one. If I must choose it would be Alien, but you can’t go wrong with either. Very different tone, but both great films.
I love that Aliens answers the question, but what if they were armed and could fight back?
Personally, Alien is also my favorite, but I love Aliens as well. It's one of those original vs. sequel debates where I completely understand someone choosing one or the other, and I have no arguments against someone who picks one or the other. Some other examples I can think of include: Frankenstein vs. Bride of Frankenstein, The Godfather vs. The Godfather Part II, Star Wars vs. The Empire Strikes Back, and The Terminator vs. Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
I would say that Terminator is the most comparable to Alien/Aliens: a tension-filled sci-fi horror original, and a James Cameron sci-fi action sequel (although T1 was also directed by Cameron). I will agree though, I do NOT consider T1 a horror film, but there is more horror in it than in T2.
Aliens for me. Aliens probably has the best characters in any movie av seen. Alien is a claustrophobic horror. Aliens is a 80s action classic. I prefer the claustrophobic horror genre myself. But I prefer aliens to alien. That's how good it is. It's utterly fantastic.
Aliens for me but Alien made me want to see one of the greatest sequels of all time!
This doesn’t track with my perception of Aliens. I’m gonna watch both and maybe report back.

Alien... Aliens is really good as well but I prefer the spooky haunted house in space vibe of the original.
For me I like watching aliens because alien is some u can watch once in a blue moon , aliens is a anytime movie

Alien, and it's not even close. I like aliens, but it is overrated. I also put alien 3 over aliens as well.

I prefer ALIEN. While I definitely enjoy ALIENS, I tend to start feeling a little fatigued by all the action at around the 2/3 mark.

This may be considered blasphemy.... I am a huge horror fan since I was a kid in the 80's. Sci fi also. But I have never ever seen any Alien films. Not one. For some reason they never appealed to me. I dont know why. Im gonna have to give them a try.
They didn’t appeal to me either and then I watched them. You’re not missing a single thing in any sequels besides Aliens. The rest are mostly watchable but nothing like the first 2. Hopefully you check them out at some point
