    Ironically I missed the show because I was conducting Halloween Walking Tours in South Pasadena. I think Minus One might've de-throned Godzilla 1985 as my favorite. I'm embarrassed to say how many times I saw it, but it had a profound effect on me. A month before I had to end a relationship with my girlfriend who is Japanese, we're supposed to see the movie together and never did. The stuff in this movie just amplified the emotions and broke my heart. On top of that, it was the closest thing to the kind of Godzilla movie I've always wanted to make and/ or see.

    As a lifelong G fan I Never thought I could love a film as much as Minus One. This doesn’t retroactively make me like my other favorites any less but it gave me what Ive always wanted. A G film where you can feel the gravitas of the situation. Loved it. Godzilla is an absolute menace in this film. I love how they made concrete rules to the lore. Can’t say enough about it. And yeah Godzilla’s scream at the end of 1985 made me cry. However, 4 years later in Godzilla VS Biollante he returns and more powerful. Can’t keep the Monster King down for good.

    I loved that the film really went to the roots of the feeling of the people of Japan at the time and how they wanted to perceiver through a tragic string of events. The title relates to it in the idea that after ww2 Japan was back to zero and the attacks of Godzilla brought it to minus one

    Dave speaks passionately for 45 minutes and is thorough, detailed, and thoughtful in explaining his enjoyment of this film, and aside from a few viewers who attempted to continue the discussion, we then get brilliant questions & comments about pizza toppings, the distance from California to Canada, the terrible Strangers remake, etc…
    As someone who started with this channel 5+ years ago, I can’t help but feel that the reason Dave still hasn’t cracked 30K subscribers after a number of years is because people are tired of listening to the same “super chatters” asking a lot of inane and redundant questions in an effort to either buy Dave’s affection or to repeatedly have their name said on air.

      That certainly is interesting... Whenever I send a super chat, it most definitely will be to continue the conversation. You are correct; I love hearing Dave's knowledge and passion on a given topic, and don't prefer the distraction chats either.

      Could not agree more. I also think for some weird reason, many of this viewers lean younger and just can't grasp the more layered and insightful discussions Dave wants to have. I don't mean to sound agest, but there's only so many times I can discuss Halloween, Michael Myers and Jason. You see Dave do his best to try and get so many of his viewers to take an interest in film analysis, but they just would rather ask Dave what his favorite pizza is. Frustrating. Dave always handles it like a pro though.
      I think there's a good portion of people in this space that don't realize how valuable Dave's insights are. Most youtubers don't work in the entertainment industry, and don't have years of experience and knowledge in this area. There's only so many dick jokes i can take from WWAM. Dave actually has really insightful, Interesting and valuable analysis, many of which often come true. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves and I think a large reason for that is because, as he often says, he's not a movie reviewer. Dave is the beat in this space for inaight and entertainment combined, he deserves so much respect and a lot more subs.

      @JustinChampa It's just remarkable to me that Wolfmans Got Nards (who I really like) has nearly 100K subs, yet Dave is on the verge of 30k. Huh? No disrespect to Wolfman, but how is that even possible? Dave's shows I find far more entertaining and insightful.
      The funny thing is though, Dave still gets really good engagement. Every stream he does usually ends up with like 3 to 5k views. But ya, this sub issue is weird to me. I guess if Dave dropped everything and did news updates and reviews everyday, he'd be further ahead. It's just a shame that so many of his viewers seem to be so disinterested in other topics if it's not bloody Halloween lol. Anyway sorry for rant, I just agree 100%.

      I couldn't agree more. A lot of the chat room is just to much, hence why I really only talk to dave and never feel the need to say hi to anyone. The halloween questions are just beaten to death . It's down right insufferable already. Like we're talking about one of the best godzilla movies made , and you're asking about halloween, or Friday, or the instrument that Harry Manfredini played with his left hand. Like wtf ?

    This is going to be a long comment (sorry in advance), but I’m trying to keep a bunch of thoughts relatively brief.
    I loved Minus One. I saw it 5 times in theaters (4 in color; 1 in B&W). While it isn’t my favorite film in the franchise, it is in my top 5. It’s easily the best Godzilla film since GMK (2001). Godzilla was the first film franchise that I got into as a toddler, and it’s the reason that I love studying both film and history (specifically WWII and the Cold War). The 1954 film is my favorite film of all time (heck, if there ever was a film that I have researched and re-watched more than any other in existence, it would be the 1954 film). What I like about 1954 is the themes and the Japanese perspective on nuclear weapons and how the message was told. It wasn’t made as an “anti-American” film, but was rather “anti-nuclear weapons”. The opening scene for example, is a direct reference to the Castle Bravo incident that occurred months before filming began. Ishiro Honda was a pacifist and didn’t want to worsen U.S.-Japan tensions so soon after the Allied occupation ended.
    Studying the franchise also helped me learn more about Japanese history and culture. For example, the “cheesy bad” later Showa films were deliberately made that way for financial reasons. They were low-budget to make an easy profit. This was a time when TV was a booming business in Japan, and theaters were suffering, so they appealed to kids and pro-wrestling fans who made up the majority of theatrical audiences in the ‘60s and ‘70s. However strange the got, they almost always had some social or environmental message relevant to Japan at the time and I think that makes them a bit better than their reputation among general audiences who write them off without knowing the context of Japanese society.
    As for Minus One, I loved it. The story about Japan's post-WWII trauma and Shikishima's survival guilt is compelling enough to carry its own film. Godzilla being involved just makes it even better. His introduction on Odo Island was shocking. I also didn’t expect to see him so early on. I liked seeing him in his pre-radiated form, referencing the Godzillasaurus from 1991 but being much more frightening in design and characterization. I thought it worked perfectly fine seeing him so early on because the audience is just as shocked and caught off guard as the characters are when he appears. Introducing him at night in the rain with brief, very obscure glimpses of him and focusing on the characters’ reactions is exactly what happened in the 1954 film. I also liked that Godzilla is neither a good guy nor a bad guy. He just exists as a neutral force of nature, just like in 1954. My one complaint (jokingly) is the lack of General Douglas MacArthur (one of my favorite historical figures). If he was put in charge of killing Godzilla, he would have done it in an afternoon and returned to his duties as head of the Allied occupation as if it was a normal Tuesday.
    I’m also beyond tired of the complaint of “Godzilla doesn’t have a lot of screen time”. Historically, Godzilla doesn’t have a lot of screen time in most of his (better) films. He has always been less of a main character and more of a driving force. It’s about how Godzilla affects humanity after opening the Pandora’s box of nuclear weaponry, and can we coexist with Godzilla. As long as his screen time is impactful, and the humans aren’t painful to watch, I’m good. I’m one of the few who don’t mind the 2014 characters. Maybe because I have a lot of military in my family and like the main character, I’m not that expressive, the main character resonates with me a bit more. I get the complaints, but I don’t mind the characters.
    I even enjoyed GXK from this year too. It wasn’t the type of Godzilla film that I particularly care for any more (it was more in line with the early ‘70s Showa films), and is a far cry from the tone and style established in 2014. However, March was absolutely miserable for me, so it was just the type of film I needed at that time and I had a lot of fun with it. I wouldn't argue with anyone that dislikes it, but I had a good experience ending that terrible month with an entertaining film.

    I enjoyed it at the theater. I liked the old school Godzilla score and camera work. Overall, I enjoyed it more than the American versions. I thought the characters were more believable as well. My kids are wanting to watch it on Netflix this week 👍. As for the ending, I would have changed it a bit and had the pilot not know that the mechanic rigged the ejection seat, so it would have been a surprise to the pilot, and he would have really been ready to sacrifice his life.

    Japan was given 3 days to surrender after the 1st bomb was dropped & they refused. Even after the 2nd bomb was dropped Japan didn't surrender until almost a week later. Innocent lives are always in the balance in war. What the Japanese did to us & what we did to them was tragic, but those bombings on Hiroshima & Nagasaki were the only way Japan was going to surrender & even then they hesitated. As for "Godzilla: Minus One"...the FX, characters, story, music, photography, editing, all outstanding!!! Nice review/discussion.

      Believe it or not, there are many World War 2 historians, many of which are American, that disagree with you. Yes, in principle, there are truths to what you just said, but it is not black & whit. There is sufficient evidence that suggests that Japan would have surrendered, and that it was unnecessary to use nuclear weapons against them as if it was the ONLY way. Nonsenae. Even Hitler was defeated without the use of nuclear weapons. No other country in the history of mankind has used nuclear weapons except for the us Americans.
      This idea that it was the ONLY option is nonsense.

    someone make Dave see this if he's not aware but the opening scene with Godzilla is not actually Godzilla😅 it's the GODZILLASAURUS that turned into Godzilla once the bomb hit and mutated him ..that's why you see him so early

    • @DaveMcRaeOfficial
      @DaveMcRaeOfficial  Před měsícem +1

    • @ludocrious7898

      @@DaveMcRaeOfficial well you see it is a reference to Godzilla vs King Ghidorah from 1991 in which the idea of Godzillasaurus was first seen and used as background story to Godzilla.. and while in MINUS 0NE they might refer to the dino as Godzilla it's probably just cause they wanted to establish the name early on

    • @DaveMcRaeOfficial
      @DaveMcRaeOfficial  Před měsícem +2

      @@ludocrious7898 This is a semantics issue. The Godzillasaurus is never referenced in Minus One. You're thinking the creature you see at the start is supposed to be a reference to Godzillasaurus, but there's no evidence of it.
      Wikizilla states...
      "In Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla begins life as a dinosaurian creature similar to the Godzillasaurus, and like the Heisei Godzilla, is mutated by American nuclear testing in the Pacific."
      "According to Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla's pre-mutated form was made to have deliberate differences from the Godzillasaurus so that the two wouldn't look overly similar."
      The creature you see at the beginning is Godzilla, unless you're definition of Godzilla is only when he's radioactive and 500 feet tall. But that's subjective. To me, it's still Godzilla regardless.
      But even if it was Godzillasaurus, this is not the reason they didn't do what I had suggested.

    • @ludocrious7898
      @ludocrious7898 Před měsícem +1

      @@DaveMcRaeOfficial alright, fair enough it's a reboot after all, kinda like Shin Godzilla making some creative liberties🤔 but wikizilla do say there "similar to the Godzillasaurus" doesn't have to be the same but it is an influence in the end more or less.. again to your take on the scenery, sure you could show less of him but to me it kinda makes sense for what they did since it's just a mini Godzilla 😄 🤷‍♂️ establishing some alternative lore

    • @stinkfloyd1

    • @DaveMcRaeOfficial
      @DaveMcRaeOfficial  Před měsícem +2

      But it can more. There are lots of movies with lots of Godzilla out there. It's nice to see a character driven film set against the backdrop of a Godzilla story that helps to ground it. There's a reason this film is beloved by Godzilla fans around the world. And when Godzilla does shows up, it counts.
      The original Halloween hardly had Michael Myers in it, but when it does, it counts. And you always feel his presence even when he's not on screen. A similar thing can be said about Godzilla Minus One. The film is about someone who is dealing with the guilt, shame and PTSD from his encounter on the island with Godzilla. Just because Godzilla is not on screen every 6 minutes, doesn't make it any less of a terrific film. This isn't a story about a giant lizard smashing Japan like some silly PS5 video game. It's more. And I'm all for it. And Godzilla is bad ass.
