    People forget Shearer broke his leg twice and scored about 20 odd goals in the old first division. Proper player.

      He was in the relegation battle a few times too. Did not get the same service as the other big name strikers, for quite a few seasons.

      Exactly. As a burnley fan I can't stand what he did for rovers but I admire his elite mentality to change the way he played and still bag

    3 serious injuries and still 260... phenomenonal

    • @paulie-g
      @paulie-g Před rokem +1

      That's exactly it. Was out for ages, had to completely change his game once injuries took their toll, and still produced. Defences were much tougher in that era as well. Fowler was, imho, the most natural finisher the English game produced, but Shearer was the most complete pure striker and the sustained performance even when he lost athletic advantage is unparalleled. Kane could "beat" his tally and I still wouldn't change my mind.

      @@paulie-g Correct the most complete English centre forward, strong, aggressive, excellent leap for his size, Kane may eventually pass to 260, but Shewrer will always be the best.

      @paulie-g Před rokem +1

      @@davidhoward5392 Don't think Kane will do it personally, but regardless - Shearer will always be the template for a traditional English 9 at its best. You've rightly picked out aggression - Shearer had that cutting edge to him, constantly, always on.

      Spent a lot of his later career getting balls hoofed up to him most of the time as well, which was absolutely not his game (never complained though, real team player). Right into feet, maybe just ahead, is when you saw the best of him. That campaign in 06/07 when he just couldn't stop scoring in the CL, he was just imperious, limbs everywhere, carnage. Just didn't "look" as elegant doing things as smaller players, so didn't get the credit. Far more than a cult hero at Liverpool, we genuinely rated him. Reckon we'd have won another CL if Rafa had played him in the final and went aggressive.

  • @dantshaw
    @dantshaw Před rokem

    Big respect to Kane but nobody I know who saw both play would say he's better than Shearer, whatever the goal tally or goal ratio ends up being. The game was more defensive and nasty back then. Shearer had a highly developed elbow technique which he deployed liberally as a consequence.
    A master of the yellow card without getting a second yellow. Could get others sent off. So many assets to Shearer's play. Would definitely have put that penalty against France into the top left hand corner at light speed. Will always be my original football idol.
