Time is short and your choices are many. Are you after functionality and killing ability or, as I rather suspect from your avatar, something more Traditional. Davide Pedersoli selling through various companies, makes more varieties. I go through a reasonable review in Muzzleloaders for Hunters. Fewer companies are making flint guns each year and their prices are going up each year. Dixie is a one-catalogue source for the guns, accessories and shooting tips.
L and r lock best thing u can do to lyman and tc. I did it to my old tc and excellent results. Sold my tc lock on e bay and bought l and r. A win situation all the way.
Good evening sir I bought a traditions PA pellet and I have the darndest time getting it to go off I am considering getting rid of it and getting a Lyman Great plains rifle. I was just wondering if you have heard or have any experience with the accuracy of that rifle and reliability???
Tyler, I had reasonable luck with the PA Pellet using Pyrodex Pellets. One alteration I did was to enlarge the flash hole with a 1/8-ths bit. I also teased a little FFFFg powder through the hole but made sure the flash hole was not crammed full of powder. The Lyman and TC flintlocks use a coil spring which does not give as reliable ignition as as leaf spring. You can strengthen this spring by putting a washer on the guide rod. Or L&R Lock will sell you a replacement leaf spring lock for the Lyman (and perhaps the Traditions). This will require a little extra fitting to allow the leaf spring to work. I have a Lyman deerslayer (the carbine) version of the Plains Rifle with an L&R lock, sling and Lyman Adjustable sights for sale for $300. This rifle has been used, works, is glass bedded and shoots well with 100 grains of Pyrodex Pellets and a 370 MaxiBall. Or, you can use conventional loose powders with perhaps even better results. I show the gun on some of my videos and in my books.
I do not thing that you could go wrong with it, provided that the used gun is fully functional and the barrel is good. Even if there were some minor problems, Lyman still supports this gun with parts and accessories, which is a good plus. I can't say anything final about a gun without seeing it, but this is an excellent reasonably inexpensive gun of its type and should work fine. The only modification I would make would be to glass bed the action and tang and perhaps de-burr the action, if needed.
You can buy mine, but because I have a better, replacement RLP lock and Lyman sights on it, I need more for it.It is a used gun, but better functioning than a new one. Besides, this one knows how to kill game. It has done it many times before.
@@willrowell3218 I would use it as a back-up pistol, but would really prefer a longer barreled gun as a primary tool for hunting deer. Black powder just needs barrel length to develop serious energy or heavy bullets. The heavy bullet approach can go too far when recoil becomes so strong you cannot hold onto the gun.
An excellent primer, as always. Good hunting to you!
You're fun to listen to and you've got lots of good advice. I'm stunned why you haven't got more views then you do, keep it up.
Hovie, great video, I'm watching to learn.
The advice about boring out the touch hole is so obvious that I feel quite embarrassed to not have thought of it myself. Good video as usual.
Don't feel bad. Once revealed, everything is obvious.
thanks for the pointers, Im looking at getting my own first fleintlock for this go Georgia hunting seasons

Hovey, have you messed with the cap n ball version of this? I have a chance to buy one for $350 but I have never messed with a Lyman rifle.

Thanks Hovey. I am just not sure if I want the cap n ball or if I want to find a used flint lock.

@@HoveySmith Just out of curiosity what do you think of the Great Plains Pistol in 50 caliber from lyman as a potential deer hunting pistol?

What size do you recommend for touch hole size?
1/16 inch is about right in my opinion.
