Lyman's Great Plains Muzzleloaders are the best and most reliable designs and the finest workmanship available. They come in both finished and in kits, 50 or 54 caliber and percussion or flint.

My first Lyman deerstalker was a lemon. I hunted out in the rain. When I got home the whole stock was warped and cracked. I returned it and got another one but this time I had the stock sealed with tung oil. No problems yet. I did notice the frizzen is rubbing against the barrel atop of the touch hole.

I have had my GPH since the 1990's looks great shoots fine, I did put a GM 1-70 twist round ball barrel on it, the only issue now is loose barrel wedges.. Easy fix when I get around to it... Sad to hear Lymans quality has gone down..

My ramrod is so tight it can not be practically used. It hits the front face of the lug through which the wedge pin slides through. Once seated it is so tight it can not be removed without extreme effort. What's up?

@@jamesavery6015 It's called the dollar extortion racket, which causes American middle class manufacturing to be more expensive than Europe. The high dollar is good for the parasite banks' dollar exports, though.

I have a Lyman GPR. I wish I had known prior to purchase that the user is expected to have to beat the barrel lugs with a hammer in order to fit the wedges. (Same problem as 'Okie Sharpshooter) One end of the rear lug came off of the barrel. That might be why I can't get this gun to group. I would never have bought this if I had known they don't bother to correctly finish the gun before shipping. It's also a flint breaker. Notice also that Lyman doesn't respond to people who reported problems here?

@@robertwhite1759 Actually, yes, it is Lyman's problem. Quality for Lyman/Investarms rifles went down the toilet years ago. You run a 50/50 shot on getting a decent rifle. I have one made in 2001 and the machining chatter inside the bore is atrocious.

Couldn't find "Ask Joe" At Lyman's. My damn wedge is way to loose. It just falls out! Yes, I have tried tightening up the tang screws.

@Howard Luken I had the same problem. I solved by cutting a two inch piece of bicycle inner tube and slid it around the barrel and stock where each wedge is located. Works just fine. I am now creating deer skin wraps to replace the inner tubes just for looks.

No spring in the barrel. Wedge not even close to going in.
Brand new Trade Rifle. Not sure if I should work on the wedge first or see what is making a series of clicking noises when I cock the hammer back.

I bought one years ago. The stock, under the barrel, was bare wood. BARE. No finish of any kind. I returned it to the dealer.

I made a comment about a month ago but think Lyman paid CZcams to delete it😀 I’ve had two great plains rifles. The first one I sent back to Lyman because of extremely poor craftsmanship. I thought maybe it somehow got through quality control unnoticed, but the exchange rifle I got was just as bad. Mill marks still on the barrel, nicks and dings in the stock, butt plate screws mangled from improper screwdriver or the idiot that put the things together, rear sight dovetail machined crooked as a dog‘s hind leg, poor inletting of barrel/tang/trigger assembly. DO NOT buy anything from Lyman! Quality has gone to $hit, but that’s the way everybody is these days.... give us your money here is some junk leave us alone!

  • @jamesavery6015

Oh ya. That will really look nice having protruding screws above the tang. Here’s an idea! Why not make the son of a bitch correctly in the first place so the customer doesn’t have to finish your half assed craftsmanship.

They are only interested in profit, not quality.
