How to Replace the Camshaft Position Sensor on the BMW E36 (1998 328i)

  • The check Engine light and code P0340 are often the result of a worn out or failing camshaft position sensor--Particularly if you start noticing a lack of power and sluggish acceleration. This is an easy fix as the camshaft position sensor is located on the top front part of the M52 engine in these BMWs.
    As always, I am an amature mechanic contributing to the BMW community. I am not an expert and not perfect. You should not assume that everything I do is right. Caveat emptor, dudes and ladies.

    This helped me replace mine myself, savior, thank you. For anyone else, put a light on the 3rd space of intake manifold and that is where the other end of the old sensor plug is. Alot easier to do when you can see the adaptor when putting the new one on.

    Follows along right with the service manual. There's another video where the guy has some aftermarket parts, removes random stuff and I have no idea what he was talking about, so I'm glad this video is on here bc the other one was useless

    Did mine today. The hardest part was finding the senor connector tangled. Use a good set of Vise grips that open while clamped to 32mm. Adjust to get a good grip. You don't have to unplug the vanos necessarily. 19mm wrench for vanos banjo bolt hand tight. Must use two (2) new crush washers. About 20-4 pounds torque. You feel the washers crush.

    Thanks a lot man! I was using your tutorial to replace my camshaft sensor on 323ti 1998. Was super useful. What I also did - I have removed oil filter cover and cap. It helped a lot, because I had to squeeze my both hands in to connect sensor. It was one of my first engine fixes ever, was much more complicated that it looks in your video, but I have succeed. So thanks a lot again

    Nice video. I am about to do this repair to my 1998 328i this week as soon as the part arrives. Thanks for taking me through the steps before I start. The one thing I would add to your video is to add a little engine oil to that new o-ring to lubricate it before installing the new sensor.

What's your thoughts any help would be great??

    I fixed my CEL with the P0340 and the car runs like new. What I have learned the hard way is not to use ANY other brand than the BMW original part OR VDO (Siemens or Continental). There are brand names like Hella, Meyle or Bremi who have excellent products normally but BMW's are very special about their sensors!
    The problem many people miss is that a new non-BMW or non-VDO CPS might work exactely like the old damaged one; Making people believe that the problem must be in the wiring or the Crankshaft position sensor; BMW must have a failsafe system that it still runs with the "wrong" sensor making the problem so hard to diagnose.
    There are horror stories in the forums where people replaced harnesses and DME's just to find out that the sensor was the problem after all. The car might still start with a non-oem sensor; before you rule out the CPS as the problem make sure that you put an VDO or BMW sensor in it. If it still doesn't work get a second replacement one from BMW directly. A new VDO one is like 90 dollars a BMW one about 150 - after spending hours tearing the car apart just think whether 150 dollars is really that bad to be one the safe side!

    • @E85BMW
      @E85BMW Před 7 lety

      Look up the Rocker Jack Pad Adaptor on ECS Tuning. It hooks up to where your emergency jack connects on the side of your car and it'll free up the jack pad so you can put the stand underneath once the car is lifted.

    • @nrcsean

      Use the front crossmember on the subframe. Very easy. Use some rubber (e.g. a hockey puck) between the jack and the subframe to help prevent it from slipping

    Sometimes I have acceleration, and sometimes I have very little. This started right before my clutch fan gave out and the reservoir tank burst. I think the tank burst first though, then killed the clutch fan. It was having this power problem a week before My car went into overheat mode, and yes I did pull it over and get towed.
    Could this have cause the camshaft position sensor to fail or god forbid the vanos as well.
