  • On this video we show you how to replace a Cam shaft position sensor on an M52 BMW engine.
This can help stop, rough idle, loss of power and some other symptoms.
Ours was done on an E36 3 series 323i with the M52B25, but this engine was in the E37 Z3, E38 7 series and E39 5 series. The cam sensor should be the same in all single Vanos 6 cylinder petrols in this range.

Thanks a lot mate. My e39 m52 was lacking a bit of power and stalling when the engine heats up a bit. I thought it was the fuel pumps and I've had to change it like 4 times not knowing that it wasn't the problem. I moved on to the crank sensor which I hear can do the same thing when faulty but now I have 7 different crank sensors. I'm on my way to go buy a cam sensor now and hopefully it will start without any misfiring or stalling.

No worries at all, I hope that this helps, it will be brilliant if it does. Let me know if this helps. I am chasing a fault around the E46 at the moment so I know how frustrating and expensive it can be. I know beemers only like Siemens or BMW electric items like sensors to. Mine doesn't work with Delphi recently lol

I am hoping a Siemens BMW sensor will solve an intermittent stalling issue with an E39 M52 B25, as I had one recently fitted with an aftermarket sensor and it seems to dislike it within about a month just like yours did. No rough running or idling issues but once run up to temperature it is like playing roulette as to when it will just stall with all power and steering gone (scariest when that happened once on the motorway). Priming the fuel pump a few times will get it cranked up again but probably run for no more than another five minutes before stalling again!

Ah brilliant. I found anything other than Siemens didn't work well with our BMWs

That does sound scary. Another thing a friend had on his M52B28 was a faulty crank sensor. It kept stalling when warm but was fine when it was cold. That one would just crank but not fire when warm aswell

What was the knocking sound? 🤔 mine started doing that same sound and i dont know why.

When was it? Sorry I will have 2 rewatch the video 😄. The engine had a knock but that is down to an aftermarket crank sensor it didn't like

@@wolf_kiff_workshop in the end. So maybe mine will fix when i change that sensor 🤔

@@wolf_kiff_workshop my e36 started making that noise few days a go. Ticking or knocking sound comes from somewhere near intake manifold 😐

Ah I see. I know that the injectors can become more noisy as the mileage gets a little higher. But it may be worth listening towards the front near the vans unit. They can become noisy. I also did a video that we did after this video about how to service the single vans unit. I will post the link

I still need to change our crank sensor for a genuine Siemens one. I used a Delphi one but the car doesn't like it on idle
