    The PCV valve doesn't separate oil from air, it can't. The grey canister you pointed out is the oil separator, which has steel mesh inside. You don't get anything in the catch can because the original oil separator has done its job. The aftermarket check valve also can't separate oil from air. Its purpose is to stop blowback into the sump. These engines need crankcase vacuum to reduce oil leaks, especially from the rear main bearing area. The purpose of the original PCV valve was to regulate the vacuum, which otherwise would be too much at idle if connected to the intake manifold (as it should be). Sorry to be so late to the party, and to be a pooper!

    All Minis have breathers, even the 850/1000 of course. These have the breather in one of the the tappet covers and back to the carburettor. 1275 engines do not have those tappets so the system is a bit different as the one you show in the video

    I don't want to be 'that guy', but the PCV does not separate the oil from the gas - the silver oil separator can on your engine does that. The PCV allows the oily gases to be metered / sucked into the inlet manifold except when there is high manifold vacuum (i.e. decelleration). Later designs also prevent a backfire from the inlet manifold entering the crank case (not sure if the Austin valve does this)..... www.hastingsfilter.com/Literature/TSB/94-2R1.pdf

    i don't see why you need to wait to fit a check valve to route the catchcan gas into the carb. A mild negative crankcase pressure isn't harmful. Just lean your carb fuel mixture a little to compensate for the slightly extra gas entering.

    I bought a car with a catch can fitted and piped to the breather on the transfer case, with a similar adapter to yours. I am getting some oil leak from my venter oil cap on the rocker cover, should I replace with a nonvented cap or that does not matter?

    Hi man my tappet cover got a breather hole, since last week I'm smelling fumes, getting high on fumes, the hole is like a pipe the pipe is facing carburetor (air filter big round one), it get oiled up by the tappet cover breather, all along it wasn't doing that I'm very stressed what would be the case? I which I could send pictures

    Hi Cole. Have you ever seen a socket like tool that fits over the clutch end of the crank? So you can turn it? It must have two pins in it to fit the cutouts. I saw one on a Mini Mania's video. Probably have to make one. TY

    Hey Cole, so this particular is my project now, missed the video 4 year ago LOL
    Question though, the catch can you posted a link for does not exist on Amazon any more, yet they have a bunch more so no biggie i guess.
    Now, they show (the catch can) a IN and a OUT but apparently you connected both breathers and guessing one of them is actually on the OUT port or whatever..?, am I seeing that right?, you didnt mention that little detail in the video, but appears to be so...

    Hi.. if the breather’s canister is already an air/oil seperator, what is the purpose of an oil catch can? And what’s the difference between a PCV valve and a check valve [which you’re showing instead of a PCV].. thanks in advance

    • @curtspicer1521
      @curtspicer1521 Před 6 měsíci

      My thought totally. It seems to me the OE oil separator is best. Oil caught in the OE separator drains back into the engine at shutdown.The amount of oil is very nominal in a street car even after a long distance trip of several hundred miles or with the normal type of driving that us crazy mini drivers do! I have not seen a reply answer to the question yet.

    Could you please tell me what's inside the silver cylinder canister and does this item require servicing or maintenance. On my 1275cc engine (ADO16, not a Mini) the hose from this canister feeds directly into the air filter. Many thanks

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 3 lety +1

      The canister holds a semi coarse wire mesh that is used to help collect the oil mist that’s in the crankcase ventilation. The only time you would need to service it is if it became clogged over the years. It can be replaced with a similar wire mesh.

    Hi, could you explain something I don't really get please, why does the catch can need that tiny to-atmosphere air filter on it? I thought the oil-less gases should be pumped back to the carb? I can see you have a line running from the catch can back to the carb but don't really understand why there would be an air filter as well. Surely that means less gases get back to the carb? Hope that question makes sense.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 4 lety

      So the hose you are seeing that looks like its running to the carbs is actually coming from the crankcase breather on the radiator side. So the two hoses are coming FROM breathers into the catch can and the out the filter. :-)

    My 71' 1275 doesn't have the oil catcher. it connects straight from the breather to the carburetor. Is it fine to fun without the catcher? Thanks.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 4 lety

      Without the catch you will end up with more oil mist in your intake and can foul out the mixture a bit but I doubt you will have any noticeable issues.

  • @BNCA70
    @BNCA70 Před 5 lety

    Hi. I am trying to see where the pcv valve actually sits but you don't say - one minute it's in your hand and then it's gone - where does it live? I think mine is worn or blocked because I have oil coming out of the dipstick hole. Just can't work out where it comes from. Thanks from a UK viewer.

    • @hlund73
      @hlund73 Před 5 lety

      PCV valves were fitted to twin carb motors because it would mess with their balance to connect at a carb. It fitted in the middle of the inlet manifold balance pipe. It also has nothing to do with oil separation - it's big because it houses a diaphragm that uses atmospheric pressure to shut the valve when the manifold vacuum gets too high.

  • @koenryssaert6370
    @koenryssaert6370 Před 5 lety +1

    Can you run without a breather ? Nothing has to be changed than ? An 998 engine.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 5 lety

      You must run with a breather. Especially on higher displacement engines like my 1293. It's required. The lower displacement engines really should have at least one breather on them, these a-series engines have a tendancy to "breath" pretty heavily even in the lower displacements.

  • @hosrow
    @hosrow Před 3 lety

    Hi Cole, yet another great video. I am going to order the catch can and install it. If i connect the outlet from the catch can to the carb, do i still need a pcv valve? My valve cover does not have a place to hook things to it. I am not clear on the need for pcv valve on top of catch can.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 3 lety

      Not all minis have the bypass installed. Usually it's earlier cars or earlier engines. At this point the bypass had been removed on my car.

  • @jskeith11
    @jskeith11 Před 4 lety

    My 998 breather is just left open. No hose back to the carb. I’m assuming that I should at least connect it back to the carb to avoid misty, oily, air being sprayed all into my engine compartment? Thoughts?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 4 lety +1

      They do have a built in wire mesh (if it hasn't been removed) which should help keep mist down but yes I would either connect it to the carb, or add a hose and run it down below the engine so it helps direct the fumes away from the engine compartment.
