There was important footage on Linus' Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 when it went for a little dip in the pool. Can Dan recover the data and save the video?

I fucking love Dan this man is a gem
Keeping the videos relatable
South park reference
I heard the first part, and immediately thought "Wait for it"
My man delivered 🤣🤣
Dan must be protected at all costs!
Dan the man
I love that Dan is somehow always both over qualified and under qualified at the same time on any given project.
Reminds me of me; he's just more charismatic.
@@MsHojat Ouch. That hits close to home :D
My life XD
Over/under, straight to jail
I feel like this is any tech type person that's been around for more than 10 years. SO MUCH experience that may or may not (but mostly not) apply to any given situation. But then one time you pull that one golden nugget of info....
Two GOD TIER decisions both starting with 'D' were made here:
a) Dan is an absolute GEM! We desperately need him in more content! Love his humor so soooo much! 🌝
b) Dennis is the best thing, that ever happened to sponsor spots! Because I actually watch and pay attention to the hilarious wonderful Dennis ads instead of ignoring or skipping them like normal ones - and I strongly suspect I am not the only one either! They are absolute masterpieces! 🛍️😂✨
yes, it was great
espeically at the end with the "Wait we are promoting someone else's bac-" *outro starts*
Correct, you're not. I always skip the ads, but not when Dennis is on.
missed it.
Going back now.
@@nullvoid3545 Dennis Ads are something else for sure. Best hiring decision ever. Pretty sure he got him for cheap.
Seeing Dennis goof off in ads just reminded me that Channel Super Fun is once again dead.
Dan deserves a raise, a massive bonus, and MUCH more airtime!
"forever... it destroys entropy" Dan is always great when on camera.
i've also never needed something more than the precision driver set.
Please put "It Destroys Entropy" on the packaging
Yes dan needs to be in more videos
"I need some Alcohol, and some for the phone too"
SOLD!
Putting dennis in that role was probably one of the best decisions ever made
Lol
Yea that short guy on the right is good
Designed for Live Laugh Lia-Li-life.
Looks like a weird parallel universe version of mythbusters… i like 👍🏼 😂
Honestly, these are the kind of sponsor spots that make me want to turn off my adblocker. I'm always curious to see what Dennis will do next 😂
Protect Dan at all costs. He's a treasure.
It's such a strange feeling seeing how this is so hyped up in the video, but this is every week for me as a mobile device and computer repair technician in a small business, where I'm the only technician.
I felt every feeling that Dan did as he wrestled with that phone, and the satisfaction felt in seeing the work successfully completed.
I felt the same way too, like it's really hard to break a phone's storage like they describe it. But kudos to them! They were able to get the footage out! And it also looks like the phone had multiple other issues too (charging issue??) so it's a big deal from their viewpoint.
The amount of adhesive use in today's electronics is absolutely a chore. And some are in such precise arangements, not like you can just whack some on the edges, and preapplied adhesive kits can be rare for not-of-this-year phones. I have a back for an S10e ready to go but i've been putting it off since i just do not want to.
@@Cosmitzian I have swapped out a S10e's battery and rear cover just last week.
it's not a difficult one.
iPhone Back's are the worst.... they are UV Glue'd i think. it's nearly impossible. I usually just swap the whole rear assembly.
@@Cosmitzian T-7000 glue is perfect for that rear cover.
how full is your rude word jar?
We really need more videos with Dan, he‘s great. Would love to see him more outside of the WAN show.
He’s occasionally on short circuit reviewing speakers and audio equipment. Always a pleasure.
Dan is my favorite anime protagonist.
Dan is much better than Linus, that's why they dont want him to take the spotlight...
many of the secondary hosts are better imo, but the channel would feel weird as fuck without linus@@DegustoDelSol
absolutely, need him in like 1 video per week, whether it be on his own or as a supporting character
Any LTT video with Dan in it is instant gold. His dry delivery of “It destroys entropy” slays me.
Omg it's amazing to see how Dan's gone from being kinda timid on camera to naturally relegating Linus to assistant host right here. We need more Dan! He's The Man!
Edit: Just finished the video, and eyyy congrats on getting it all (mostly) working 🎉
Honestly, Dennis is the only person that can make me go back to actually rewatch an ad 😂
Dan is great on camera. His voice is very calming, and he is always talking over everything he does.
He knows his stuff and as you said his calming voice with a certainty that is like this is not going to work and he knows it tpye of attitude
Seeing Dan's ability on camera progress at such an insane rate is crazy. He's not in alot of videos but each time I see one it's like he's never stopped hosting for even a week.
I mean, he does kinda host WAN
@HorizonMakes yes. But I wouldn't call that being "on camera" they only turn his on now and then for brief moments, and it's just a webcam But he's clearly a natural being on actual video. Imo, I think being more closely focused on radio like performances such as the WAN, can make translating to video tough for some
Regarding the heating gel thing that you mentioned you didn't heat enough, you could've used the bed of one of the 3D printers from logistics. They're great at keeping a precise temp and you can just plop the phone face down there (just don't heat it too high).
In September, I went swimming off the coast of Anguilla with my S22 Ultra. Got a ton of great footage. Later that night, the charge port gave me the "water detected" error when plugging my phone in. It was basically puking salt and sand. It may have even had a crab living in it. I didn't have access to a wireless charger. But I did have a full bottle of rubbing alcohol. I doused the entire phone, paying special attention to the charge port. By morning, it charged like normal. However, the S pen refused to work; for 3 weeks. Assuming I had killed my pen, after 3 weeks or so, it randomly started working again like nothing ever happened. Entire phone has been fine since the first week of October. It's just a phone and it's only money. Phones can be replaced and more money can always be made. Life's too short to worry about things that won't matter in a year - or ten.
Great video, btw 👍
The transition from Calm Dan to Rage Dan with that broken screen was hilarious. The transition speed was unreal
What's worse is that on the floatplane cut, he had nearly worked that side of the screen off.
@@Metal_Maxine I know I'll also rage that hard if I were in the same situation. More heat then would always be welcome.
I love how quick witted Dan is. Oddly enough he's a clone to a Dan I used to work with, in both appearance and personality. A chuckle every time he's on screen.
Everyone knows about the Clone Dans. We all have one.
Not just you, we all have Dan clones.
Dan definitely needs some more camera time! If that is what he enjoys. Denis is great as always too!
14:56 That extreme joy when the phone booted up is really a great feeling, I've also had it a few times when fixing little complex devices a few years ago. Nice that you got it working again!
I love seeing Dan as host, he got that suave aura to him. And the way he explain stuff is just great
Hmm, you sound just like Dan.
Dan is a good character
As a Samsung repair tech, when he broke the Sub UB at 9:42 I felt that. Even using the tools that Samsung provide it is next to impossible to remove from the enclosure
Do you know why it won't charge?
To have a battery bulge so much it pops out the screen must be a godsend then xD
@@The_Localcorrision on the flex cables dan not cleaning it...
Haha, agreed. When they were trying to power on the phone I was yelling "plug it in!" at my screen. I've had way too many cases where I've scared myself thinking I somehow damaged the main PBA before the screen magically displays once I plug it into power.
Did this exact fix today at work, work at a Ubreakifix repair shop. For those wondering, a inner screen + labor on this is typically a $600 repair, so he got it done for much less getting a donor and using a friend. Nice work on the repair! An opening pick is typically preferred for disconnecting flex connectors but overall very well done. Also using about 75 C of heat for 10 minutes makes that outer screen and daughterboard easier to remove. Loosens the adhesives.
What about the battery not allocating?
It's just 5 minutes at 72c for the top heating plate and 64c on the bottom heating plate then you use suction and cut the adhesive once it lifts. It looks like their main ub and main side of the phone was fine. I think all that needed to be replaced was the sub ub, sub pba and the battery. It would definitely something you would troubleshoot and replace only the affected components
Best sponsorship add ever! I laughed so hard when Dennis started showing with his ridge bag!!! Awesome job guys. I really love it!
A very easy way to soften the adhesive evenly is to use your 3D printer. You just put the phone on, turn on the heated bed for half an hour and your phone is ready to be disassembled.
How hot does it get? I wouldn’t want to charbroil it
@@spartanipods it's adjustable, like a 3d printer or heat plate would normally be.
@@spartanipods That's the good thing. You can set an exact temperature on it. I usually use 60 degrees, that does the trick.
@@spartanipods you can set it to 20-80 degrees
@@leventeszecsy6262 Awesome! I’ve been thinking about getting a 3D printer, and now I have even more of a reason to!
Dennis is definitely a keeper, love his humor😂
they need more ads from him :D
Overall this is one of my favorite LTT videos in a WHILE...
Dan is such an entertainer.. I Love that you all leave him unedited.
Then to finish it off... probably one of my favorite sponsor messages to date.
14:45 I love how dan can be sarcastic or angry while also so careful sounding, truly we need more dan!
Dan is a great host for these "slower" paced, more focused content! I can listen to him talk for hours lol
Edit: Also for opening screens, what you really want is a heat plate. Those iFixit kits are good for at home fixer ups (I guess that's why they used it so it's more like "you can do this too!"), but heat plates distributes heat wayyyy more evenly and imo is easier to use
Always prefered a heatgun over heat plates due to speed and flexibility. If Ive got the time ill use the oven: it will loosen up the battery as well =)
But yeah, heat plates are way better than those kits for sure
can confirm. tried to replace a surface and ipad battery and thanks to the heated bed on my 3d printer and some alcohol around the screen it went successfully.
Suis-vide cooked phone anyone?
you dont need an heatplate when you have a 3d-printer - just slap it in and choose your favourite temperature ;)
Dennis is one of the few people on Earth that actually should have ad spots as an acting career lol
I’ve never agreed with a comment so much before 👍
I would watch ad after ad if Dennis was the lead actor
I enjoy his ad's 😂
I came here from Floatplane just to watch the ad lol
@@iambear.6526 his ad's should be floatplane exclusive 🤣
Watching a non professional attempt a water damage repair like this is so damn entertaining.
I seriously love fixing stuff like this. With the PS5 slim teardown and now the fold. Such a fun thing to do. And Dan makes it 100 times better.
I could just watch dan repair things all day long
The Dan repairs stuff channel. I would watch that.
The James May for the 21st Century.
i was like what? hang on there... watch and repair? then i realize that in my language the word "dan" means and in english.
Yes!
I love it. He is softly spoken and has a cutting sense of humour.
We definitely need more Dan, I really enjoyed his detailed tear down and his calm voice made me just want more.
15:05 that was a genuine expression from both of you. A sincerely excited hug too. That, without any editing, makes a great thumbnail for a video. Something real. Also, congrats! It’s a great feeling to see a dearly departed device come back, from your (friend’s) surgery
Dennis: killer commercials. Dan: a rival for JerryRigEverything. So soothing, witty, and fun.
As someone who fixes phones as a hobby (side quests), the feeling you get when a phone works again is exactly how Dan and Linus reacted, every single time!
Until you consider the fact that charging doesn't properly work anymore on that phone
@@AiraDelasse water damage is almost always a writeoff. Especially if it's salt water. The phone is just not the same afterwards usually.
i have had once an iphone that was fully flooded but somehow managed to recover data, after two hours it died completely
As someone who used to do phone repair at a Samsung repair center, using a metal shim helps a lot with pulling off that screen without shattering it, the ifixit picks are too thicc for the gap in most cases. Well done and love the video!
Playing cards and IPA worked well for me in the past.
@@GH0STST4RSCR34M in personal experience, not often through regular use. I saw it somewhat common with old iPhones (6-8) and a more often in older Samsung's (7-10), and a lot in water damaged devices. BUT most if not all devices will eventually as batteries degrade over time. So age is a factor.
@@tschuuuls486 definitely that as well. IPA works wonders
agreed, he also needed waaaay more heat to get that front screen off on the donor phone, but tbf he did say that afterwards. Those Ifixit gel things are pretty useless IME, a proper heating pad that he could have left the phone on for a while (or even just using a heat gun) would have been optimal but obviously I understand why everything wasn't exactly "optimal" in this video haha. Those front screens do usually come off pretty easily as long as you have the right tools. Love Dan and it was very entertaining to watch. I definitely can relate to that instant negative emotion when you break something that's working, even if you don't "need" it...Very frustrating haha.
So something like a thin paint scraper then for walls? Really then and long with a hanedle for leverage.
Love seeing the Dennis style’d segways. They are always so good. Also good job on fixing the phone Dan. Repairs and deconstruction aren’t always easy.
That sponsor segment at the end was golden. Good job Denis. Not only I didn't skip, I enjoyed. Will definitely buy their backpack now. They have better ads then LTT
Seeing a master hobby hacker like Dan breaking a screen is so validating. I've broken so many screens trying to soften glue. It's such an art fixing phones. And Dan's commentary is always top notch as usual!
that ifixit thing sucks, a hairdryer is better and free
My guess is that Dan knew they should have used a heat gun/heating pad, but they used the shitty gel thing to make it more "interesting"@@25566
Seriously. I have an old Moto Z I'm trying to keep alive for it's projector and 360 camera mods that had a bulging battery, thought I could get away with just doing the battery. Cracked the screen as I was trying to cut the adhesive...
@@25566 i actually dont have a hair dryer xD
but i heard 3D printer beds are a valid option too... wait I have a cheapo hotair solder station that could work?
@@DiverseGreen-Anon that's genius!!! Much finer control with feedback over a wide area, and not as hot as soldering hotplates. 🧠🧠🧠🧠
I love this guy, he's so timid, quiet, composed and reserved... until he's not, it's absolutely hilarious!
The Greatest Dan That's Ever Lived
Dan is too funny. We need more Dan
Dan is the best thing to happen to you guys in a LONG TIME. Hes amazing
"It destroys entropy" is probably the most epic claim possible stated the most casually.
As a guy whose literal day job if fixing phones, this was nowhere near as painful as I was expecting, I'd hire Dan! Good to see him in something other than the WAN show and the rare short circuit.
Dan is actually incredibly funny. This was really fun and interesting to watch.
I love seeing another Dan video, easily one of my favorite hosts.
Their genuine joy was truly wholesome. i know the feeling after saving something broken. admittedly, I don't break stuff as often as Linus...
Dan's deadpan delivery was phenomenal. Sponsor spots were on point. Great video all around.
That ad segment was actually great 😂
Remember. Always use a hair dryer or heatgun to soften the glue
The charging issue is because the two cells are in different voltages.
is there no balancer in place that could charge one battery until their voltages match?
The fact that they didn't use a heatgun baffles me. ALWAYS use heat to remove glass screens.
@@Kitulous if one of the cells is undervolted, no chance. The bms will disable the cell
And more likely there is a protection if one of the batteries is 0.5-1v off the other it wont charge to prevent heat up and fire if the cell is damaged.
So replacing both batteries from that spare phone could've solved the issue or am I thinking wrong?
@@ashar8192maybe.
That happiness on Linus's and Dan's face after the phone got repaired...!!!
It's fun to see others work on the Fold series. I've messed with about 20 during my time at a repair company.
Dan is love, Dan is life.
We love you Dan! :D
Dan, we all have faith in you. Even if you don't recommend we do. In the worst cases we have your humor to fall back on. In the best cases, you're so good at everyone else's job they keep you from doing you're own. 10/10
We can never have enough Dan, man is an absolute treasure.
I appreciate Dan's repair skills. Need more videos like this.
Dan : "It destroys entropy"
there's a reason we love him...
There's nothing like a Dan to make your day good.
We need more of this guy, he's the best so far.
People who fix phones are something else, it's like they've deliberately made them as frustrating in construction as possible.
10:25 If I recall correctly, the water damage indicator is even simpler than that. It's 2 pieces of paper glued together, one with dye and one regular blank white on top. When the indicator gets wet, the dye from the bottom piece of paper bleeds through the white one.
Dennis and Dan are a national treasure.
Repairs are fascinating, would love to see more
Successfully completing a repair is one of the best feelings. Good on you.
I normally don’t watch the sponsor segments but this one was great!
The cheers at 15:00 are contagious. Great work!
Just quietly listening to Dan narrate as he disassembles the phone was so soothing.
This was actually very interesting to watch.
More of these vids please!
Dan, your tremendously talented and we would all love to see more of you on future videos. As far as I'm concerned, having someone like Dan on the team is priceless. Good Job dude
Not gonna lie, this is THE FIRST intro ad that was worth watching.. short and funny. I think you're on to something,
That collective cheer when it works....so relatable to anyone who has gone in slightly over their heads over a electronic repair and made it work. I wish I could have got to share that excitement with someone, but all my successful repairs so fair have happened alone at 2am lmao. Maybe one day
Glad to see more Dan! ! always enjoy having him on the channel
DAN show!!! We've been waiting for this one!
Dan is a cool dude and elevates every LTT vid
I love this ridge segment. Thanks Dennis
7:27 "we don't have any syringes at work, I hope."

I love Dan. I want more of Dan. Dan is great. This was so fun to watch. Thanks Dan.
Dan needs to do more stuff maybe even just streams or videos of hardware he's working/playing with "The Dan Show"
This may be the only phone repair video that I've ever actually enjoyed. This was pure gold.
Banger video. Dan has Bob Ross vibes and Dennis is just hilarious.
Love this video. The poking around the phone, investigating it all & Dan being in the video was great fun.
Love this kind of vids, this is how a lot of tech enthusiasts are born, trying to fix your own stuff!
Dan is amazing, please add a nod to the "it destroys entropy". It was perfect.
The sponsor segment is so well made! If all of them were like this, I'd maybe even watch them.
best feeling ever when you can finally retrieve that data for someone and thier memories are saved.
This is probably one of the first times I've fully watched a sponsor spot, awesome work lmg and the ridge
Amazing video intro. We NEED more of Linus talking to himself from either his shoulder or a cloud like this video.
Dan was great on camera and I love Dennis’ ad spots so much!
"Lets get some alcohol! And maybe some for the phone." That line took me out! Dan kills me sometimes.
He forgot to use a hotplate instead of the heatstick so he killed the display too 😆
@@handlemonium Haha, it was just one of those days. I repair electronics, had this happen a couple times. Its always the broken display that comes off perfectly and the good one always breaks. It's the way of the universe.
This video was genuinely so much fun to watch. Dan you are awesome
I wanna put out appreciation for Dennis's ad spot at the end of the video being VERY worth watching. It gives me Donut Media vibes and I'm loving it, cause if you're gonna have sponsor segments, then you may as well make em worth watching
good thing that i have sp0nsorbl0ck
Exactly the reason I went to rugged phone long time ago, the withstand drops and water damage way more effective than regular sealed phones
Linus need one like that for his projects, they have very interesting capabilities, like dust and water proof, longer life battery, night vision, and some even come with thermal image camera, overall they are amazing phones and there's a wide variety according to everyone's needs
Dan's quiet chaos is an excellent contrast to Linus's regular chaos.
Dennis chaos is on a whole different level though.
Dan: “it will spin forever”
Linus: “we can’t actually make that claim”
Dan: “it destroys entropy”
as a samsung repair tech, this hurts my soul so much
It's a Linus video, what else do you expect?
One thing I learned with a lot of modern phones is that when you disconnect the battery it basically needs a jump start to say you can turn on. Kinda weird but something you get use to if you do phone batteries often
I loved this video, it was really funny when Linus had to leave, or when Dan broke the screen, but the reaction when the phone actually turned on the excitement is so good
