I love how these remakes are called “live-action” when they’re like 95 percent CGI. So basically, “let’s remake an animated classic with a worse animated film.”

It’s a shame because they could have done some really nice stuff with a ‘less is more’ mindset.
For example, I think it would have been a lot more in keeping with the spirit of the genie in Alladin if they made him the only animated character - something like they did with ‘Who Framed Rodger Rabbit’

The irony here being that the more "diverse" they try to make their movies, the less "human" or "relatable" they become. With far less expressionism than before.

omg they casted Haile because she has the voice!! literally, someone saw her sing live and they wanted her to audition for the part. Notice how these Disney movies are MUSICALS?! they need people who can actually sing and not fake it. Chloe grace motez, who was originally supposed to play her, didn't have the natural singing voice. its not just about looks to get a role

My daughter's little friend, whom happens to be black-and I'm only mentioning that because it's relevant, saw The Little Mermaid remake and said "why did they change Ariel and her pretty hair?" .. they noticed the hair, not the skin.. and no female empowerment or race discussion just "what happened to Ariel, why did they change her?" Exactly.. the groups they're trying to Pander to don't even like it
that's a very smart little girl that your daughter is friends with, she knows what's up and can see the big problems with these crap arse remakes that us old schoolers can clearly see immediately.

Thats one girl though. I can understand that black kids feel left out when they only see white people in disney movies but remaking an old movie, changing the characters skin color and then calling yourself a hero for it is just cheap. If disney really cared about black people not feeling represented they would have made a new movie with a new story and with beautiful animation. Make something new and make people love it instead of just remaking an old movie. It's just so embarrassing.

That movie wouldn't be getting anywhere near as much hate had they just casted a white redhead to play Ariel. There are hundreds of Danish women or even Irish women that would have been perfect for the role.
I think the actual quote was, "leave now, and never come back". I remember because her voice was so iconic when she said "hobitses" after.
I think it was quite cruel of Disney to cast a black actress as Ariel because anyone could predict the backlash that would ensue and Halle is young and just starting out her career that controversy could be harmful for her. Well, one could say there is a _modern_ audience because whenever there's a huge generation of new people, this new generation has new ideals, different humor/interests, etc. Meaning that movies have to change to meet the interests of this new generation, or modern audience.
However, I am in no way saying that the people themselves are different. New generations still like good storytelling and creative content.
There's a fine line, and Disney is just throwing stuff out, regardless of audience interests.

I would have said they bought it to hate-fuck it, but maybe that’s a tad harsh.
The Princess and the frog was primarily hand drawn, showed the value of hard work and the black character wasn’t artificially wedged in at all. Disney needs to remember how to make movies like that.
I agree, it was a movie with genuine soul in it- I wish when Disney cared about their product instead of "Ehhh fuck it, throw in a black person and call it a day, who gives a shit we'll get money-"
They've never made a princess tiana live action...........But I agree to some extent. I don't know about some people but I really don't think the problem is that she's black.
The music was pretty awesome too. They used jazz (not to mention gospel and zydeco) more effectively than a Pixar film that was supposedly about jazz.
Well the first Disney princess black people get is turned into a frog for the majority of the movie you dont even remember shes black through most of it.
Princess and the Frog has one of the best messages imo. I miss when conflict was based on classism rather than racism or sexism. Classism is more of a problem nowadays than any other social problem, but I guess big media wants to point fingers elsewhere since they’re some of the ones that cause it.
Another thing that pissed me off about the Mulan 2019 remake (along with so many other things) was the fact that the writers omitted Mulan's cutting of her own hair in preparation for going in the army. THAT is literally the most PIVOTAL action in the whole animated film. It showed sacrifice, courage, and bravery to face the unknown and the terrors of war in place of her father. Seriously, why get rid of that?? Its so important.
I think as much as these movies preach about female empowerment ultimately all they care about is the $$$ and they weren't willing to sacrifice the quick buck they can make by having a "sexy looking" female lead
but if you are stunning, brave and courageous just because you exist, than actions cannot do that same thing. sacrifice is only done by others, not the me me and me group.

They removed the hair cutting part because during the time period that Mulan would've been alive men and women had long hair, so there was no need to cut it.
That said, the impact of her parents finding her gone and being worried shouldn't have been changed to be so lackluster but it was :/

Us 90s kids were so lucky to experience the Walt Disney renaissance. It was amazing and magical and can never be bettered. We have experienced the best.

I’m honestly rooting so hard for Dreamworks right now- with the new Puss and Boots movie and the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 4, I think they might actually save us.

The problem with remakes nowadays is that they're remaking GOOD movies instead of remaking something mediocre and making it an amazing product. Why would I watch a remake of an amazing movie if I can just watch the original?
That's the point: soon, you won't be able to watch the originals. Kids today probably don't even know the originals existed. To them Mulan will always be about a mary-sue who fights an evil-not-so-evil witch for the sake of "honour"; Belle will always be Elon Musk in a skirt; and Arielle will always be black.
i just don't think they want to make the effort, as the drinker said its all about a quick buck. i also don't like alot of kids now don't want to watch older, less polished stuff, for example my nephew won't watch the original beauty and the beast but will watch Moana over and over again

Yeah, humanity kinda peaked until the early 2000s, then I think it went (not so slowly) downhill. You can see it in the quality of the movies: the masses started to consume mass produced movies instead of intelligent and well created art pieces. First small clue that something changed, and not for the best.
What I actually liked about the original little mermaid and Mulan was that any message that could be found inside of them was perfectly natural and made everyone enjoy the movies rather than dividing their audience and losing them in general

Twenty years ago, people made fun of Disney for making direct-to-video sequels like "Return of Jafar" and "The Little Mermaid 2". If we only knew how bad things would get.
To be honest, they were bad, too and still are.
Won't stop Disney, though, to remake them, too, once they actually run out of all their "big" movies to remake.
The thing is, there were still a number of good ones here and there, and they still felt a lot more creatively inspired and had a lot more heart than whatever the hell is going on with these remakes.
Those sequels were masterpieces compared to the crap we're getting now.
@@Veilfire That's true. Even though I said there are really bad sequels, some were solid to kinda good which had some more effort put in. Those were, in my mind, Lion King 2, Cinderella 3 and Rescuers Down Under. The differences between sequels in quality and effort sometimes really sting out.

My main issue with making Ariel black isn't really about the fact that she is black, I understand diversity is important in this day and age, so I'll be more than happy if they make an original movie and story with a leading black character.
No my issue with black Ariel is that The Little Mermaid is based on the story of H.C. Andersen, an important author in Danish culture and history, he's like one of the only authors from Denmark that has any real recognition on the international scene, so him and his stories are very important to us Danes, so when Disney decides to make HIS character black it feels (to me anyway) like they are trying to blackwash Danish culture and history for the sake of "diversity" and quite frankly that pisses me off.
Imagine if Disney took a traditional folklore from somewhere in Africa and made it an all white cast to "make it diverse" that would not go down well. Why not just make those folklores from Africa into movies? Make the western world aware of those stories like with Mulan.

I'm from France and I love old fairytales from Andersen, Grimm, Perreault, the 1001 nights... They are interesting and teaching stories and moments, and the fact that they tried to change characters that were white, while not daring to touch the other "races" (I really dislike that word, but I don't have an other one in mind) tells you everything you need to know about Disney's mindset while doing those films...

Hence why Manga and Anime have taken over the market. Not only is Japan not beholden to the grasp of woke political bs, but the fact is that after WW2 they became as capitalistic as hell. Finding ways to make the most profit without damaging their brands or names, which is a big thing for Japanese people as a whole. Just being associated with a box office flop in Japan could mean the banishment of that film creator or writer from professional work and destroy their careers unless they themselves had worked hard to the point that such a thing would not harm them aside from a simple statement about how it was the worst thing they as a professional writer or creator worked on. So as the 21st century rolled around now a days you don't see American made 2D animated films or shows that are made in different styles. And any that are made are normally made with what some have thought as templates from other works simply because they're easy to make. Whereas with Japan they've largely expanded both their audiences and talents in animation, with each anime while 2D generated, still has a largely distinct look for each anime with only using something like Pixar 3D animation in a very sparing way that has yet to really hit the fluid motion like normal 2D animation. From what I've seen such animation only is used for say monsters or certain characters during specific moments or items. Overall, this still just boils down as to how Western animation has taken a massive dive into going woke, and many people not wanting such things going to other sources for entertainment, and if that means watching Anime and reading Manga over Comics and whatever is considered American animation, then I'd say that ratio is 8 to 2 in favor of Japan.

@@RavenclawFtW3295 Apparently, Disney plans to go back to releasing 2D films, but I don’t know how true this rumor is because their upcoming films for the next 3 years are mostly live action. They’re even making a live-action “Snow White” and “Lilo and Stitch” movie, as well as, expanding on movies they already have like the”Lion King” and “Peter Pan”, so we’ll be waiting a while for 2D to come back if it ever does.
I know, they talk about inclusion and engage in nonsensical race swapping left and right but you don’t see them going to Africa and exploring the rich history and folklore that they could use to make an animated movie. They have plenty of source material to use but they are just satisfied taking the easy way out and lash out when someone points it out
Aslan from Narnia was a realistic lion and he had more character expressions than the soulless 2019 Lion King remake.

Thank god I have all the original VHS tapes in mint condition. I noticed all the tweaks Disney has done to their older movies, especially Pocahontas and Fantasia.

I never thought about it that way. Disney hired Halle Bailey knowing fully well the reception she'd get. It's so easy for them to lump the genuine criticism with the racist and bigoted takes, and basically let her take all the heat because she is the face of the movie.
She's a good singer and is pretty. She'd do well as a lead in a new IP, but god forbid Disney ever do anything like that. Just do performative virtue signalling, wring the nostalgia bait dry, rinse and repeat. God, Disney and MCU is unbearable...

I think the dark colour palette in a live action movie is less about realism and more about how making everything dark hides the bad cgi and lowers the costs.
Theory 1: It's primarily a tech demo meant to test higher color-depth capabilities on newer cameras/displays
Theory 2: It's designed for top-of-the-line 8K UHD HDR Dolby Vision screens, the rich are that out-of-touch!
The thing that turned me off with the new Mermaid is her “blackish” singing … shrilling galore … no thanks 👋

I couldn't have explained it any better. Something has felt off with Disney and just how they make their movies nowadays compared to what it use to be , It's almost as the more technology has advanced the more their trying to tweak everything to look more realistic and modern looking. Somethings aren't meant to be remade or modernized , the Disney movies in the 90s had a a very wondrous, ethereal and magical essence with how they portrayed the characters and story, they even did an amazing job with the color schemes of the movies such as Aladdin and The Little mermaid that had a vision to it that brought out beautiful colors more similar to those of vintage and sense of imagination that you couldn't help but be captivated by.
But now, they're taking all those nice colors out. That's not progression
The freedom to express things in animated movies/series is probably exactly why anime is doing so incredibly well outside of Japan lately as well.
I told my wife we should watch the new Mulan (I was trolling her. She didn't know about how abysmal it was and is a HUGE fan of the animated one). Anyway, we got to the roof part in the beginning and she turned to me and said, "This is awful. Can we watch something else?" LOL
She's a keeper.
This was also my Fiance in the first 15 minutes of Rings of Power with Guyladriel jumping off a sword and flying through the air to kill a troll. She looked at me and said can we watch Breaking Bad again 😂😂😂

The biggest insult to me with Nulan, much like most feminine characters today, is them making her so masculine.
Disney seems to hate everything feminine in their female characters. What message is that sending to young girls?

Having collected animated cels, the animators WERE/ARE true artists. They paint from behind or backwards; in the reverse of traditional painting. Details first, then to bigger, and bigger bits.

A day after watching this video, I saw an article about a live-action remake of Muana. Showed my six-year-old daughter. Her response was '"Why?". Simple, yet brutal.
"There's an entire world of rich cultural traditions, legends and folklore from every conceivable country, race and creed just waiting for you to try out." e.g. anything from Studio Ghibli perfectly exemplified this point.
I bet Ursula isn't actually bad ,and she surely would have some backstory , showing her good. Because if they show a woman as a bad person it won't fit ..... THE MESSAGE !

The main problem with the little Mermaid's remake isn't the darkness, but her darkness, it means Disney tempered again in our childhood memories and killed again another redhead on the altar of diversity in order to virtue signal to the world. The old hand drawn animations were superior in every way I can think of. Better looking, more expressive, more unique and always tailored to the story they were meant to show.

I remember as a kid growing up in the 80’s and Disney would re-release their older movies like “The Jungle Book”. I went and saw it in the theater as a kid and it was awesome! I can’t stand how everything is now, it’s literally pc gone too far!

A major problem a lot of these remakes/ sequels have is the writers believe the women in the those stories were “done dirty” and that they must fix that (Trinity,Nala,Leia,Faye)
I absolutely hate how these new wave femenists, all act like women were in cages the last 60 years. Women were liberated in 60s, and been countless, countless, countless amazing women who have been own person since. Like days of I Love Lucy, despite being prototypical household wife from old era, shes way more strong, interesting and lovable as anything these girl bosses of today.
I mean every subject, there were women at forefront of it, even video games and horror movies, places that people felt women were being treated as "pieces of meat", yet been the top place for the strong woman archetypes. Women who ran companies like Oddworld and Sierra, had immature and pervy stuff, cause in reality women like the same things as men. Even the old pervy movies like Slumber Party Massacre, literally directed and written by women.
Reminds me of the femensists who hate Quiet from Metal Gear. Her body was sculpted from her voice actress. She was hyper sexualized, and these screaming women wanted her gone, yet if they did that, they just took work away from a strong successful woman, who launched her career into space with that character.

@@lucad9667 Brother Bear suffered from coming out in 2003, right at the height of Pixar's powers between Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. At the time CG animation was still the new thing and all other methods looked obsolete. Looking back, those Pixar movies stood on their writing first and visuals second, they could have been made in 2D and they'd still have been Incredibles (heh).
All of which were final rehashes of the same movies that Disney had already done a dozen times before you were born. It's what they do.

Black Cauldron for example, while noticeably flawed, had a much darker and scarier tone than films before. For example, the scene with the army of the dead really stood out, and it is still the cencored version. There are elements from other Disney classics, yes, but it did try somehing new.
Brother Bear not only had absolutely stunning visuals, it's also the only Disney movie featuring North American native culture. Plus, the realization that the protagonist killed, and I mean KILLED, the mother of a pretty young child is really heavy stuff if you think about it. Normally, as with Bambies mom, the killer is just a faceless evil, they drastically changed that here.
That scene where Ursula gets cornered at the docks and indignantly says, "Diplomatic Immunity". While Ariel iconically replies, "It's just been revoked" and impales Ursula in the dome with a vibranium powered, laser speargun...
It was so brave, stunning, and totally KO'D the patriarchy in Mordor.

Honestly, the lie of "see yourself" irritates me. I related to all the female princess save for snow white lol. I think you hit the nail right on the head about streaming. I appreciate the convenience of it, but like you I've always found worrisome the fact of not physically owning a copy of what you are watching or listening to, because it means it can be removed from the platform (or edited) at any given time. And also because it encourages a bad routine of just consuming content once, for its novelty value, and then forgetting it ever existed. People still love hearing Stairway to Heaven on the radio, right? So why shouldn't they like re-watching a good movie that came out two, five, or thirty years ago?
I saw the little mermaid a year ago with my daughter and was surprised by how brave Ariel was. She saved prince Eric the first time she meets him and he saves her back at the end. She’s very strong willed and independent. The story doesn’t need a “modern” retelling because it’s more feminist (in a good way) than any thing modern Disney writers will come up with. Disney exces don’t care that they’re ruining their own legacy. The more quick and easy money the company makes the bigger their bonuses (which is all corporate people care about)

I grew up in the 90s and have really happy memories of being taken to see all of those iconic Disney movies. I was about 5 when the little mermaid came out and I was obsessed - knew all the songs, had the dolls etc. beauty and the beast, Aladdin , the lion king - just amazing films, completely enthralling from start to finish.
One of the key impressions made on me was the importance of teamwork, of working through conflict within family and friendship groups with empathy and self reflection, of understanding the perspectives of others and ultimately coming together to overcome the villain.
Now a parent myself of young children I have all the iconic Disney animations from that period on DVD precisely so my own kids have been able to watch them as they were originally made
Hey Disney, there are still hundreds of cultures and fables to make movies about.
You know what I love about _The Little Mermaid?_ If you watch it with the eye of a creator, it's obvious that the artists who designed and animated Ariel absolutely adore her.
She's full of energy and life. Even the stupid decisions she makes are still endearing and representative of her flawed character. There's real talent behind that film, and that energy translates to a palpable viewer experience. Current Disney isn't even on the same stellar map with their live-action work. It has zero life and is therefore deader than Dumbo's Mom, and the audience knows it.

I’ve talked to people born in the 90s who wanted to grow up to be old school cell animators because of the Disney Renaissance animated movies. Their disappointment with how animated movies have not only devolved in quality but also made cell animators practically unemployable is immense.

To be fair, all the Disney movies shown in the vid experimented with and helped pioneer 3D animation. The key difference is it was used to magnify the cell animation. You see the techniques still at use today by movies like Klaus and Series like Arcane (though in that case, 2D animation to enhance their 3D).

I remember seeing a special at the end of my “Sleeping Beauty” VHS that was a behind the scenes about how the backgrounds in the show were all painted by hand. It was so beautiful and enchanting to me as a little girl and it’a what inspired me to learn to paint for myself. New Disney could never inspire me like that.

Personally, I think "Network" and "Bonfire of the Vanities" were actual warnings from desperate creative's, and like Iron Man from Black Sabbath none of us could understand them.
The fact that Disney even thought the Renaissance Era movies needed remakes (regardless of the final result) says more than anything else. Those movies can stand the test of time as is, in any market.
Never before has anyone showcased the problem with spoiled millennial filmmakers as well as this video has done. No creative person gets into their field to soullessly parrot other people's work. A cover-band may pay the bills, but everyone wants to make it on the strength of their original content.
My biggest confusion about the Little Mermaid. I couldn't figure out why more people weren't complaining about Halle Berry being cast as the Little Mermaid, I mean, she is in her 40's, no one is going to think she is a teenager. Finally I looked it up and realized it was Halle Bailey.

Disney doesn’t respect the viewers at all.
I also had the spectacular privilege of being a kid in the 90's. The release of a new Disney movie was a magical event back then, and you were never bored throughout the entire thing, always looking for that one moment or sheer fucking marvelous display of art every movie got here and there.
I'm still able to pick an old DVD and watch The Hunchback of Notre Dame and be in awe when Frolo sings while the choir chants the very _Act of Contrition_ in Latin. Or still cannot stop the goosebumps while Simba returns to his homeland and steps up the rock to be recognized as king under those few notes of "Remember" from no other than Hans Zimmer himself. Or just loose myself over the ceiling animation when Bella and the Beast dance; amuse myself with the Muses and Hades in Hercules; feel completely immerse in the adventure of discovering Atlantis... It was magical, it was - and still is - unforgettable.
Disney today is absolutely unrecognizable in comparison to what it was in the 90's.

Used to be a baby in the year Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the charts and remember Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King. Missed out on Hercules and Tarzan but saw Mulan
Oh yes, it was always special going to the theatre to watch a new movie, they had heart, they were alive, they stayed with me...
MY favorite Disney film from the 90s... was their live-action remake of the 1960s Jay Ward cartoon "GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE". Which, crazy enough, is much closer to the first 2 ERB "TARZAN" books in its story than it is to "GEORGE"! Ursula was just ADORABLE, and reminded me of a girl I knew in art school who, tragically, married the wrong guy.
I at least had some great Disney and Pixar movies in the 2000s
I often thought that being a 90's kid was a lucky thing. at first i thought it was just nostalgia and rose tinted glasses, but it genienly was a more upbeat time.
Interesting that they kept her hair red, her bikini top purple, and her tail green. Were they afraid we might not recognize her as Ariel otherwise?
The hair's barely red, if at all. The guys making the movie stated that giving her full on red hair would be "immersion breaking".

@@Watermelon74 A few of those exist because it was an older Grimm story. There's literally one called Snow White a Tale of Terror. The Huntsman movies are the most recent.
To be fair the original story of the little mermaid was already kind of a horror story since she turns into sea foam at the end which means she basically died.

I think when it came to the Mulan remake, there were two main things that ruined it: One, they made Mulan have few emotions and make her seem bored she's in the movie. Second they removed Mushu, as he added the right amount of comedic relief that didn't ruin the movie, but in the live action Eddie murphy is replaced by a stinking phoenix. No wonder Big jack Horner abuses the phoenix in the puss in boots movie, he's doing a favor for all of us.

I'm only 23 and I'm honestly crushed by the fact that I don't know if we'll have the same kind of movies that I grew up with. Everything was so thoughtful, creative, and amazingly executed back then. Even in the 2010s with DreamWorks making things like How to Train your Dragon and Megamind are classics to me vs today's garbage. Each Pixar movies each had their own style. There's a clear style difference between The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc, etc. Ever since Coco came out, all the characters look like they came from the same model. Not only that but EVERYTHING is 3D now. I miss the mixed mediums between hand drawn, claymation, and 3D. We weren't over saturated with the same empty animation today. More and more I find myself using the DVD and VHS player than using netflix. I'm hanging on to all hard copies of movies, shows, and games. People might look at me crazy for not watching any of the new star wars, LOTR, or marvel garbage, but it's honestly not worth my time. I genuinely haven't had any motivation to go see a theater movie since 2017 which is tragic imo. As an artist myself, I'm just crushed to see everything get swept up into political correctness and even as a woman myself, see all these garbage women characters that are so full of themselves. Heck as a kid, the first character I related to was Hogarth from the Iron giant. I'm so sick of this mindless garbage that people eat up. I'm so glad I'm not the only one that feels like this, I just wish there was something that we could do about it besides not consuming the content.

Intriguing. I am a dark skin male myself who grew up with Little Mermaid, Disney shows, Dragon Ball, Power Rangers, Toonami, and other legendary shows during the 1990s and around early 2000. I think the Little Mermaid film released the year I was born. I worked at Pixar as an intern in Summer 2019 in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, and I am currently an animator at a game company. I don't like how, whoever inside of Disney, decided to make Ariel a dark skinned person. It makes no sense. I am also someone who is only attracted to caucasian or latina women, and I probably like redheads the most because of Kate Winslet as Rose Titanic and recently Isla Fisher haha. I also remain single and avoid relationships. I have my good time on the weekends with a woman and continue working throughout the week. All of that aside, I am disappointed with the decision. It makes no sense to make Ariel a dark skin person. It also makes no sense that Rey kissed the man who was trying to capture and murder her in every episode, and the dark skin man who was by her side and rescuing her received nothing but random women thrown at him. They could not stand to see a dark skin man with a caucasian woman.
Companies should stop changing the characteristics of legendary established characters and be more creative with original ideas. They could have made a part 2 live action film after this one where the beautiful redhead caucasian mermaid Ariel meets with a dark skinned mermaid in different part of the sea, and they join forces in the film to triumph over a threat or obstacle. Anything is better than rewriting history or changing the original design. It will only make everyone dislike darker skinned people more. I also think that is the secret agenda when these top people make decisions like this. It's quite simple. Change the color of a famous character and make everyone hate the new color because of that major change.

Everything everywhere all at once was the last movie I saw in theaters. Was an incredible film, I’d highly recommend it. So much better then all this blockbuster garbage
