To me it is more then relevant today. I am 70 years old, born and raised in America. What we have here is a break down of our society. The people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made and the sign flashed out its warning. Wake up America.

Fellow Brit living in Oregon here. Great reaction. Listen to the original too, by Simon and Garfunkel. Written in the 1960s, The message was that technology (TV then) was keeping people at a distance from each other and stopping effective communication. People were talking but not really saying anything, listening but not hearing. We do this even more today with cell phones, texting etc. David’s interpretation of it shows anger that we did not and still do not heed the original warning/message. This live version is especially phenomenal because he was really sick with the flu yet still put out this incredible performance.

Hi I'm doing what you have already done cos I've read a few of your comments and cudos be to you cos you are 💯 spot on...have you listened to Angelina Jordan...I had never seen a music VR channel til one night Aug 14 a VR's clip rolled by and I saw in the top corner of a little girl (7 yo) and the expression on his face and a few words written on front of clip.. I didn't bother with it but a little later my curiosity got the better of me cos his expression was one you can't make up and all I wanted to do was to see why his look was one of shell shocked I was to find out and...(tryin to make this short) ...I didn't even know what the rabbit hole is...but... from the moment it was thru...I had plunged into the rabbit hole that has become a PALACE to me.. and not just 1 treasure Have I been given but 3...I am 67 and thus means nothing

This is a Simon and Garfunkel song. Back when they wrote it, it was a warning regarding how technology is pushing people away from each other. The “neon god” was referring to the tv. It began creating silence between people. Now disturb have covered it and it’s more like they’re pissed off that nobody listened to the original warning. David the singer was sick during this performance too.

My interpretation of this song revised:
This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
    perspective of the awakened.
    Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
    (awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle
    way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
    being attacked
by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
    aware of the
Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
    it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?

Great review, thank you. Yes, people don't often talk about how music touches them, but this song by David and the band has so exploded that everyone is talking about it years after they did it and about how it STILL gives them goose bumps but they hesitate to go much deeper, which is kinda what the song is about... talking without speaking. Hmmm...

Apparently he was sick that day but still managed to produce one of the best live performances ever. Also, Pentatonix have another amazing version of this song, I recommend you check it out now that you’ve seen this one. Many people have said in CZcams comments, and I agree, that when you listen to all three versions - that is to say, Simon & Garfunkel, then Disturbed, then Pentatonix - that it’s like S&G have sent out a warning. Disturbed is anger we didn’t heed that warning. Pentatonix is the hope after everything is over. Three very different versions of the song, and Paul Simon has even said that Disturbed’s version is the best he’s ever heard, including his own original one!

That's not at all what this song is about.. This is a song written by Simon & Garfunkel back in the 60's, Disturbed did a cover, and I must say THE BEST EVER COVER SONG IN HISTORY!! But, this song is about people not communicating because of technology, everyone has their faces buried in their phones and not listening to the real problems in this world and not speaking up about it either... Everyone turns a blind eye and ear to EVERYTHING while the world we live in goes to shit! At this rate, we won't be around to much longer..

  • @manuelruen

2:18 Yeh you want silence, but sometimes you don't get that option from maybe one individual or the whole world (because you are stuck.) And you are like "Please GOD can't I just get some silence here from that someone!" And it can eventually become extremely irritating (and you might want to literally scream and pull your hair out.) Mainly because nobody will listen. Like he said...listening but not really grasping on what is being said! But in actuality what I think he is really singing about is a broader spectrum. Which is think is the whole world being in silence. So you don't have to care or deal with anymore of the BS! Can't we just get along with silence without violence? Like wars and such! Well that is my opinion.
