This song was written by Paul Simon in the 60's & originally sung by Simon & Garfunkel. Paul Simon loved this version.

As a kid, this was just another hit by Simon and Garfunkel, but it turns out the Simon wrote prophetic lyrics that mean even more as time passed. Disturbed, with the darker delivery, took it to a whole new level. Even Paul Simon says it is now their song. As a guy in my sixties, I remember no computers, no cell phone, playing outside, and actual conversations. I miss gatherings that required interaction instead of sitting in rooms silently as each person stares at their phones - that is lonelier than bring alone. I drove 3 hours for Xmas dinner with good friends - silence was deafening. I left after dinner, as their phones seemed more important than our time together . For me, a wasted visit and likely an end of a 40 year tradition on the 24th. I could have visited people who appreciated time with a human, as I did for the next two days.

@JohnPaul-hm2ys : I will be 60 years old in a week and I have to agree with you 1000%. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen this on social settings whether it be in a restaurant or a persons home. It’s become the norm for kids and gone are the times where kids used to be outdoors riding bikes or skateboards, playing football in the streets or playgrounds. When we were indoors it was listening to the am/fm radio. Or playing board games. Visiting grandparents were about sitting at the table eating grandma’s cooking. So sad none of these kids nowadays will ever feel like this.
Now my honest take on all fairness.
I do believe our childhood lifestyle was as I described it, but if I had to guess what it would be like in our days of we had todays technology back then then we might be looking at the exact same thing as what goes on today. But we will never know.

I was born the year before this came out. And you are right, we grew up in a different world, a different time. What have we become? All I know is that I don't feel apart of it. Nor do I want to be. I have no family, no friends and don't want any. They are all of this world and I reject it all. Hope you find what you are looking for. Peace...

    • @JohnPaul-hm2ys

@roger5322 The best we can do is practice some tolerance without losing our own selves. I speak my peace freely, try to be a good human being, and live my own truth. There are a lot of people like us in this changing world, and I have noticed a few young kids are beginning to reject the norms - a trend I can stand behind. Step one - an upsurge in book reading instead of computer time.

@@JohnPaul-hm2ys I hear what you are saying and you are right.....for you. I, on the other hand am what I am. I've never had much tolerance for stupid shit. And I have always had a problem biting my tongue when I'm in the right. and that has cost me dearly. but knowing what I know now I'd do it again. I think I am a good human but don't try to do wrong by me because I don't get even...I'll get a head. you slap me I'll knock your teeth out. Treat me good and you'll find a friend that would take a bullet for you. Lie to me and I will never give you the time of day again. Yes they are a few of us " old souls" out there but our days are numbered and our traditions and beliefs are falling on deaf ears. So be it. They will reap what they sow. As far as computers go they are not the problem. Computers are like libraries that contain information. The problem is social media and the fake world it creates. And I've had it with this world. I spent my life looking for love. Thought I'd found it several times only to be blindsided by reality time after time after time after time after time. Now I accept the fact...I was made to love but not to be loved. That I came to accept after I ended a 10 year relationship with the woman that I still love with all my heart and soul, but could never take her back. I left her 14 years ago and have not even dated since. my family has stabbed me in the back. My sister took advantage of my father and got him to leave her everything. I've helped him build what he has for 40 years thinking that when he passes it would be mine. She took what was to be here and what was supposed to go to me. Now I'm out $500,000 and when Dad dies I'll be living on the streets. Right now I live with him and care for him because he has dementia and is blind. And my sister doesn't want anything to do with dad now that she has everything that he owns. Women are evil. I look forward to death,...

Absolutely spot on it was a song about how people lost the ability to meaningfully communicate, sadly this trend hes worsened over time.... Love how the tune was built through the first versus. And to think this was written before most people watching/listening to this were even born. Originally Paul Simon wrote this in 1963.

When Paul Simon wrote this song in 1964 it was the story of a dream he had. It was more of a beautiful folk song that people loved. Disturbed brought the song to current times with haunting beautiful vocals and it makes people think about every word, which you did an awesome interpretation. Disturbed made this song their own and Paul Simon loves this version. Amazing that a song written so long ago is totally relevant today! This was one of my favorite reactions to this song even though it seems you didn't realize it was a cover, at least you didn't mention that fact. Good job!

This song has so many different meanings... When schools, especially public schools from kindergarten through high school, run out of funding, the first programs they cut ✂️ are the art's, music, theater, etc. Also, ISOLATION, DIVISION, LONELINESS, NOT COMMUNICATING, NOT STANDING UP FOR OUR RIGHTS OR EXPRESSING OURSELVES AND WHAT WE BELIEVE IN. We no longer interact face to face with each other, but through technology, social media on our cell phones and computers. I could go on and on. 😢

You immediately got it. A dream was your interpretation. That is so close to the reality of what was happening to Paul Simon when he wrote the song. From the tale it was as if he was in a trance. It was 1963 (I was 7 yrs old) two weeks after JFK was assassinated. Paul was in the dark on the floor of his bathroom when he wrote hello darkness my old friend…. And in the naked light I saw. The neon light here was like you said…communications.. technology…nowadays in country music neon light means a dive bar or the such. This song was not received well in its time. People felt like Simon and Garfunkel were preaching to them. And here David drama is version (he was a cantor in the temple) he preaches this prophecy like a black Pentecostal preacher. I appreciate your interpretation and you catching what it was right away.. right at the start. A dream was very close when you heard the first few words. Many listeners nincluding voice coaches don’t interpret the song and I feel sorry for them that they only hear and see an emotional song. These are the deepest lyrics I’ve ever heard and simons best composition.

I see technology as just another language that is currently a barrier, but one we can overcome just as humans have overcome other language barriers, but we have to work at it. It requires effort and desire. Look at the community and interaction that CAN occur on even this platform, with people across the world from us. It is a barrier, but it can also be a conduit, if we make an effort for it to be so.

This song was written by Paul Simon and sung/released by Simon and Garfunkel in 1964! Their version is awesome, much more calm. Disturbed's version is awesome and much more powerful. You dissected the lyrics and you are so right about how technology has turned the younger generations into not so nice humans. When you go into a restaurant and there is a young couple sitting at a table and they both have their phones in front of their faces and not looking and talking to each other, that is sad. When you see a group of kids hanging out, each one with their phones in front of their faces instead of them talking, laughing, joking with each other that is horrible.

I have seen hundreds (yes...hundreds) of reactions and interpretations of this video. While you really didn't mention much about the AMAZING vocals...I feel like YOU got the meaning of every word Paul Simon wrote...in the sixties no less! I was a pop song I heard growing up. The melody and harmonizing with Art Garfunkel swam in my brain nicely. However, the visuals along with the deep passion and storytelling of David Draimon gave me tears. Now that I am more mature, it touched my heart deep inside. What a prophecy! More relevant today than ever before. I am not a big fan of "Disturbed" simply because super heavy metal is not my cup of tea. But...wow! 😮 WOW ! The entire arrangement and the very timbre of his voice and even the voice frying was highly appropriate, masterfully done. I have grown a better appreciation for the type of music Disturbed performs. Perhaps I need to listen to more of it. I will have to read the lyrics to bands who seem to "shout" the words instead of singing them. My mind has been opened...and I am deeply grateful to have experienced this whole entire production! ❤

Paul Simon's lyrics and Simon & Garfunkel 's original version of this song were a folky warning to the listening public. After decades of people ignoring the genius warning Simon wrote, Disturbed composed an epic and poignant cover. Disturbed used the diverse acumen of Draiman's voice, along with their symphonic composition to pelt the emotions of the listeners with the urgency of the lyrical message. The crescendo of the instrumentation used, in cadence with the ferocity applied by Draiman's vocals, really drives the meaning and its urgency into the senses of the listener. Disturbed has lent their name to the reaction people should get by their experiencing this masterful evolution of a genius tenet. Blackie Lawless wrote the song thinking about our military in the middle east. The lyrics are from St. Peter telling a military person that heaven is full because of the war. The chorus is from the miltary's person point of view. (Didn't use soldier, as a mom of a Devil Dog and they are insulted to be called soldiers).

I know other comments already told ya this was written by Paul Simon, I just wanted to add a few things that usually get lost in all the claims this song was prophetic, or some even saying that Garfunkel wrote it about a blind college buddy...lol. These guys were adored by my parents, so by proxy I grew up listening to them, and now that they're gone, this song especially, means a whole lot to me, ditto for Disturbed's truly heartfelt, passionate reincarnation of the song, I wish my parents could have heard it. So I like to post the full story behind the song when I can, and when I know a reactor will appreciate it, and/or has respect for old school song writing, so sorry if it's a bit long......
Paul wrote this in 1963, shortly after finishing college, he got the inspiration by accident, practicing as he often did in the downstairs bathroom of his parents house which was tiled and had great acoustics. He said he'd turn the lights out, turn the water on from the sink, and sit in the empty tub, one particular day sitting there with no lights he just strummed and sang "Hello darkness my old friend". Paul said he wrote the rest over the next couple days, and then told Garfunkel about it, and played it for him. He has said in many interviews....
"𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙖 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙮𝙧𝙞𝙘, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙖𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 21-𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧-𝙤𝙡𝙙. 𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙨𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙢𝙮 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙇𝙞𝙩. 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜. What's even more crazy is it was released on the album "Wednesday Morning 3AM", Simon & Garfunkel's debut album in 1964, and it was titled "Sounds of Silence" and was strictly Paul's guitar, and their two voices, no other instrumentation. Due to the Beatles blowing up that same year, and Bob Dylan making the jump from pure folk music, and picking up an electric guitar for the first time, Simon & Garfunkel's folk album was a flop, barely selling 2000 copies. They broke up soon after, Garfunkel going back to college and Paul going to Europe, almost two years later, the "Sounds of Silence" started getting some college radio play, so their former producer from Columbia Records, using the master copy, re-recorded the song adding some light drums and a little bass, and released it as a single called "The Sound of Silence". Paul didn't even know it was a hit until he picked up a copy of a U.S. paper in Denmark with the Billboard top 100 in it, and there it was in the top 60 but climbing fast. He flew home and hooked back up with Garfunkel and the rest is history.
There's many videos and interviews that tell parts of the story, I found this one to be the most complete, with more info than I provided above, that centers around the song itself, and not their whole career. Great reaction, take care!

First off, if I had recommended this cover or any cover of "The Sound of Silence" to you or any of these channels, I would have told you/them to first watch the original video by Simon and Garfunkel. Paul Simon wrote this classic song in 1964 and I think their first video was released in 1965.

I understand but this one is way better in my opinion. The original was terrible until they added more music to it. This cover was a masterpiece.

I definitely see where you’re going with this. But I feel the context is a bit different between the two. One bing something that man made that has replaced people’s ability to communicate. The other was a creation that was constructed for man to warship in place of God as Moses went to the mountains where he would get the Ten Commandments.

To me it's about the inability to communicate with a person face to face. Phones and computers have interrupted the ability to talk 1 on 1. I'd rather talk to someon in person than on a phone or computers, but I'm old school lol

Sorry, could not finish watching. You stopped at each verse, completely destroying the progression for yourself and anyone listening with you. You should have done some research to find out that this is a cover of a 1966 Simon and Garfunkel song rather than trying to analyze the lyrics verse by verse. Very frustrating. So sorry you couldn't just enjoy the song and then react. (I do understand copyright breaks, but yours were excessive, too lengthy and unnecessary)
