The reference to the Devil is a play on an older Western European tradition of telling stories about men and women outsmarting the Biblical Devil, a tradition which followed settlers of the southeast through their storytelling and musical traditions. Also, the song you're thinking of might be Colter Wall's "The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie" which draws on the legend of Robert Johnson (awesome delta blues musician) selling his soul to the Devil to become a famous musician.
Also, Charlie and the band did a "sequel" to this song featuring Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, and Travis Tritt on vocals, with Charlie on the fiddle along with Mark O'Connor (who is worth checking out in his own right for some awesome fiddle playing, though not usually with accompanying vocals) which might be interesting for you to check out. It's very similar musically and with an expanded storytelling aspect, called "The Devil Comes Back to Georgia."
Much love from Alabama, my friend!

I love how people from other countries listen to country music with an open mind but city Americans act like it's the worst thing to happen to the human race bc its loved by southerners the hate for country people in america has gotten terrible quite sad actually bc we are some of the nicest people you will meet we are just very old fashioned
So thank you for listening and Sharing our music we appreciate it

Brother. I love country music because of the message, but also because of the people and the community. I've felt so much love from people commenting on the channel and I appreciate you all!

This is a crossover on both classic rock and classic country. To me it falls into Southern Rock which is a blend of rock, country and blues. Charlie Daniels and the band wrote this song

Oli this song was even a crossover hit in POP music, back around 1973 or 1974

I think you’re talking about Robert Johnson. He souled his soul to the Devil for musical success. He’s widely credited as the “Father of Blues”.
You ought to give the other live version a listen; it is when CDB is younger and at the height of their success. I ain’t seen a Randy Rogers Band done on your channel yet. Buy Myself A Chance is a classic two stepper that always gets the boots to the boards.

Nothing is more disappointing as when a reactor finally does one of your favorite songs and picks a version that is so disappointing those of us who knew the song before.

Such a legendary song. This is one of those that has a million renditions, any country music artist knows this one. Btw the devil in this song is the actual devil, it not a metaphor for a person. However, you may be remmebering Robert Johnson. He was a black guitar player in the 30’s and he was so good and so ahead of his time that it’s rumored that he sold his soul to learn to play.

The devil is actually Satan it's not a specific person that's why he says I'll bet this fiddle of gold to get your soul a regular person can't steal someone's soul

@@phillipsmith1657 The Devil wears a suit and tie is referring to how he grew up. His dad was a politician and colter realized from a young age that the political system in Canada was corrupt. That is what is referring to

Definitely not the best performance of this song. This version of the song lost some of the fire it had when he changes the lyrics from son of a "bitch" to son of a "gun". They probably had to change the lyrics because they were playing at the Grand Ol' Opry. I have loved this band since the 70's but this is not the best performance to showcase this song.

This is a pretty bad version actually, he was about to lively. The older versions he was more .... devilish, if that makes sense.
