  • Those OEM pipes just didn't cut it on the 1983 Yamaha RZ350 ...so it was time to install a pair of Jim Lomas exhaust pipes to give the bike the edge it deserves!

    As a young buck in the Air Force I bought a new one in 84. Was impressed with the quality of how everything was designed and performed, very low engine vibration. Changed the pipes only and it really made a difference, loved that power valve. I decided to let it go after sparing with a GSXR 1100 and crashing over a cliff in Sicily. Went back to off road only.

      Creaky, that sounds painful! Those cliffs are a real hazard around here, too. Lots of trees down below that don’t move when you hit them. Glad to hear you’re still riding, though! Thanks for your comment.

    Beautiful bike. Love the RD350LC & RZ350PV engines > My first 'big' bike was the RZ500. Guy I brought it off said it's either teach you to ride, make you swear never to ride again, or it'll kill ya! :D

    What a gorgeous bike. Those pipes just add to its already high desirability.

    It would love a pair of these!

    NIce. I have the same 83 (and a bunch of others) in the same condition. After running Toomeys on it for some time, I put it back to stock pipes and jetting because it looks like it just came off the showroom (like yours). I just put a set of those JL classics on a recent build. FZR front, FZ swinger, FZR wheels. Ported, forged pistons, VM30s. They work well but sound a bit tinny compared to Toomeys or Spec2.

    Nothing like a set of 'spannies on an RZ350. Take your time dialing in the jetting. Get it right, it takes time but it is well worth it. Enjoy.

    With new pipe I expect different improvements; here in order of importance (for me):
    1) More power! Without better performances the modification is useless. Depend on the pipe design, we can have more power at higher rpm or more torque at lower rpm
    Both improvement are impossible, but is possible to loose torque at low rpm without significat increase of power at high rpm (asianpipes, developped without test them on dyno)
    2) Weight. The standard pipes are heavy. The new pipes need to be lighter.
    3) Sound. There are those who prefer the metallic sound of the expansion pipers while those who prefer the sound of the originals mufflers. It's a matter of personal taste. The important thing is that they are not too noisy (so as not to have trouble with the police).
    4) Look. Very subjective. Who prefers the original cigar-shaped ones, who prefers black expansions, who prefers chromed. I prefer the black expansions, with the black silencers

  • @hondarorcanada2932
    @hondarorcanada2932 Před rokem +2

    Better than stock, but you need to get rid of the air box and use K&N pods and jet accordingly. You are running rich.

      Thanks for the tip. Safe riding.

    • @galaxion62
      @galaxion62 Před rokem +1

      I would not put K&N's on it at all, because it is REALLY difficult to get them to run correctly when you attempt jetting. I gave up after trying umpteen jet sizes & went back to the original airbox with no issues. Only a pro with a dyno would be able to get it spot on.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  Před rokem +2

      Very good point. One of the biggest mistakes of people modifying their machines is not understanding that the right “balance” was achieved at the factory. If you’re going to set it off balance with a change, you need to re-balance it with other mods. Thanks for your comment.

    • @galaxion62
      @galaxion62 Před rokem

      @@3ftDeepChannel Thanks.... & yes the correct 'balance' you mention is of course finding the correct fuel/air ratio, as changing the air filter element causes the volumetric efficiency of the engine to change. As you correctly pointed out, the manufactures spent hundreds of hours finding the best ratio that gives a consistent performance right throughout the rev range. I had flat spots at different rpm levels with different size jets, I could not replicate the same efficiency throughout the rev range using K&N's, that the standard air box produced. Cheers.
